  1. Hello everyone, I am 6 weeks post op and I'm a bit discouraged by the amount of weight I have lost and my surgeons reactions. The first week after surgery I could not get anything but 12 oz of apple juice and water down. I experienced protein aversion and would spit out any protein drink or shake that I tried to take. To my surprise, at my 1 week visit I gained 2 pounds (I was also experiencing my first bout of constipation post op). For reference Surgery day: 317; Week 1: 319. After that I moved to the puree stage and found that I can only eat a limited amount of food varieties without feeling sick, and for the most part that will only last for a few days. The only thing I can consistently eat is yogurt or a yogurt drink (8-12 oz per day) for breakfast and water. Most days I force myself to eat different low fat pureed things like burrito-less burritos, buffalo chicken dip, tuna, chicken salad, crust-less quiche ect. I tend to make them in cupcake or muffin molds so it's easy to pack for work. Usually, I can only eat one at lunch and have half of something else for dinner. Last week I had my 1 month visit with a different surgeon (mine was out for personal reasons) and I lost 17 pounds since surgery day, but the surgeon seemed disappointed that it wasn't more. They asked what I was eating, and then I was chastised for the amount of sugar in the yogurt drinks. I tried explaining that most things make me feel sick or that I have to force myself to eat. I guess my question is how do you no feel discouraged by the speed you are losing weight? Or the expectation of your medical team?
  2. Ohh no I'm so sorry! That sucks Jess! I have read in different blogs that if you are not getting your liquids in you could mistake it for hunger?? You only know how you feel though. Hopefully it will get better. Have you called your Dr.? Losing 1.7 is better than gaining! I still have not weighed myself because I know the water weight is still here - it might piss me off & cause me to eat my feelings if I were to actually see a gain on the scale after the crazy pain I had on days 1 & 2.. I'm trying to retrain myself! I think this is fatty war & I'm going to win this damn battle once & for all!! I find that I am not necessarily hungry but I am managing to easily get down my full liquids! I am not feeling stuffed full but I am not hungry. I was surprised how quick I could wolf up a protein shake or soup! I have been taking Dannon zero fat 80 cal 12 proteins Greek flavored yogurt adding 6 oz of skim milk (60 cal & 6 more proteins & blending w/ ice cubes! It is so yummy & so filling! I tried the Carmel Machaitto (spelling) anyway it was great! I stopped all pain meds after leaving the Hosp & had to push/ roll my fat self out of the bed - I was pretty active today! I did the dishes, a load of laundry & drove to Super Target! I was tuckered out by days end! I'm still pretty sore & ohhh crazy weak! I chalked it up to my malnourishment of 450 calories today! I hope your "buyers remorse" goes away soon! I have read so many boards/blogs & there are so many emotions early on so hopefully for you This too shall pass. Hang in there!
  3. 6 months out tomorrow and I am very restricted with solid proteins. I would say a little less than a 1/2 a cup of solid food is what I can manage. Smooth textures like yogurt, velvety mashed potatoes, pureed fruits and cooked veggies give me more volume. I miss my salad greens and chicken. I can literally eat 3 small bites of a salad. If so much as a piece of lettuce goes down without being totally chewed to oblivion-it makes me feel too full and I can't eat another bite of anything. Its funny, when you learn all you can post-op (I watched hours of videos on U-Tube of sleevers cooking, eating, explaining and describing a post-op diet) but it still doesn't hit you until you are experiencing it yourself, you just can't eat a lot. Period. I look forward to my stomach stretching a bit so I can eat more at mealtime (especially when dining out and you're finished eating when everyone is still on appies!) But I fit into a size 14 today, from a 24, so.....bye-bye salad and chicken (for now at least!).
  4. I am with you. I can't believe I'm not losing more. I had my surgery 5/4 and was then 245 (256 before the pre-op diet) and now I'm at 230. I am filled to 7.5 and eating very little. I'm having reflux at night so I will have a unfill on Monday when I see my doctor. I am at the gym 6 days a week. Zumba, strength training, etc. I can believe it's so slow. I had them do a metabolic test on me and mine is slow. Well no surprise there. The doctor suggested adding flax seed and flax seed oil and strength training. All of which I've done. I eat fish and more fish. I am having 60 grams of protein a day. Morning-greek yogurt with flax seed (20) lunch- fish (10) dinner fish (10) Finish eating by 6 then I have a shake (14) and a zone bar (14) I follow all the rules and stop eating and drinking by 8:00 Any thoughts out there.

    Protein question

Do you use Greek yogurt with the peanut butter?

    Cereal ????

I add a little hi fiber hi protein cereal to my yogurt. I don't like Greek yogurt, I eat Fiber One lite peach. Only 50 calories and great with a little crunchy cereal in it.

    Honey

Thanks!! I was wanting to try the Fage Greek yogurt with honey, and just wasn't sure. I'll try a small bit and see how it goes.

    What Diet Do You Follow?

I do a low-ish carb diet. I have meat and/or eggs and green vegetables at virtually every meal. I do moderate dairy: yogurt, whey protein powder, grass-fed butter, and occasionally small amounts of cheese. I eat fruit and nuts as snacks (in addition to jerky and more green veggies). Excluded: grains, starchy veggies, dairy milk, alcohol, beans and legumes, and sweets. I make rare exceptions on special occasions, but they really are rare. This particular plan works well for me because if I eat sweets or other carby foods my cravings go absolutely insane. This diet keeps them in check.
  9. I was banded in May 2011 by Dr.Ortiz in TJ Mexico. I can't believe it's been 9 months since surgery. I have only kept the first 10 pounds off since surgery. I have had 2 fills & I'm at 8cc in a 10cc band. I know what I'm doing to sabotage my success...I don't exercise, I eat foods that are "easy" to eat (ice cream, yogurt, pudding, and i have found that if you smother things with ranch dressing & butter & it goes down easier, and chocolate!) I get VERY discouraged but I've realized it's not the band, it's ME! I thought it would be a quick fix, I yo-yo with my weight & I wanted something that would regulate my food, which the band does, but I have gotten used to the loop-hole way of eating around the band. At least I can say I haven't gained. I started to go to the gym about 3 weeks ago & that has helped a lot, now I need to work on the food side. I would like to lose the last 30 pounds by my 1 year anniversary date in May....so I've got 14 weeks...and I hope with the support of this site, and my new found resolution to be rid of the control I let food have over me & realize I'M WORTH THE EFFORT, I will achieve my goal!! Thanks for reading my rant, I hope you all have success on your lap-band journey, cause it ain't easy!!!

    Edema

Thanks - you know it could be my blood pressure meds. I was on one that had a Water pill built into it. My blood pressure was going too low for me (90/60) and they stopped the one that had the water pill in it. That is about the time that the water weight started to come back. I was told by my pulmonary doc that I may need to go to a lymphology clinic, but won't do anything until I see my surgeon on 1/3. I'm at the end of my soft diet stage and haven't had any problems with food thus far. I even had a small piece of beef tenderloin, thoroughly chewed, and I had no issues. I've been eating low sodium Soup, scrambled eggs, plain greek yogurt, a bit of mashed potatoes, a slice or two of Canadian bacon and still using Protein drinks. I'll post if there is something further the doc says I should do.
  11. is that normal? i went into the hospital at 348lbs. after surgery, and the IV's, i was up to 353. this morning i weighed in at 328. I know that at least 5lbs of that is Water weight from the IV's...but is that normal? i don't feel run down. i've been pretty good with my Protein drinks (at least 1 a day - i hate the things). other than that - days 2-5 were broth, water, Jello and protein. days 6 and 7 i introduced cottage cheese and yogurt and iced tea. i have my post opp meeting in two days, i'll ask them then. just kinda concerned that my body is eating muscle as well as fat. any thoughts?

    Tried Unjury!

My surgery was Nov 12, 2012 and now I put unjury chocolate Protein in my coffee, with either almond milk or 1% milk to cool it down. I add frozen strawberries, milk, and frozen banana to the Unjury strawberry shake instead of ice cubes. I like to have that at night. I also like the Unjury chicken Soup, and the cheddar cheese powder. They don't have the cheese year round though so I bought it ahead. The unflavored can be added to things like sugar free puddings, yogurt, etc. Just watch the temperature so it doesn't glob up.

    Hungry?

I was not hungry the first 5-6days post op. I had to make myself get in liquids. Nothing tasted right either, I think a side effect of anesthesia? I called my dr on day 4, asking if I could have a TBL or 2 of cottage cheese. I had serious nausea and energy drain. He agreed and once I ate a small amount of cottage cheese I felt 1000% better. Today is Day 10, I'm still not physically hungry. My stomach will rumble when its empty though and eat something like a slice of lowfat cheese, yogurt, cott. cheese. But I just don't have cravings or uncontrollable hunger. I can eat 1C of tomato soup or 1C milk/CIB and feel satisfied for at least 2-3hr. I am fighting head hunger though. I thought eating meals with my family would be ok, but it makes me sad. I really miss a big plate of foods that I love. Until I can eat some regular foods (small plate) I don't think I will eat at the dinner table. I still love food and miss it dearly. So far tho, sticking under 1000 cals a day, getting in at least 50-60g protein.

    Mushy Ideas....

HI there I understand what you mean about getting bored with mushies. I was the same way. Something that I tried was the blenderized tuna or chicken. I was really apprehensive about it but it wasnt bad and still kept the same flavor. Also try cream of wheat or mashed potatoes. If you like yogurt that can also go down well too. hope that helps and congrats on your recent banding =) Lach
  15. No surprises during yesterday's appointment. Everything was logical and straightforward. Got some samples of Protein shakes and a ton of great information and ways of approaching the next six months and beyond. Two of my fears were allieviated: giving up cafinated coffee and my Diet Mtn, Dews. The coffee will just be for a limited period bracketed around the surgery date. Carbonated diet drinks will be dictated by what I can tolerate post-op. So...not having to give then up entirely.....just avoid for a while. Sounds like I'll naturally lose interest in the carbonated stuff on my own. She's started me on an 1,800 calorie per day "budget" with 3 meals and 3 Snacks. I've got some well layer out meal plans that are super convenient with Healty Choice meals, yogurt, 100 calorie snack packs as well as lots of good stuff to cook. Work days and days off will be easy to cover. Today was day one...no problem staying under 1,800 calories. The snacks kept me from getting overly hungry why mealtimes. Chewing things up really, really well.....much different than my normal way of rushing through meals.....was a good way of slowing down and enjoying everything. Using myfitnesspal to track. I'm pleased that nothing is really off limits like it was with my stint on the Atkins diet. I don't feel like I'm caged in. This is going to be easier than I thought, in terms of planning, cooking & convenience. Optimistic and glad to getting the pounds off by whatever means are available.

    No change after multiple fills?

What is restriction? Or what is it that people believe restriction to be? Restriction with a band should be about eating smaller portions of healthy food and feeling satisfied afterwards . This can be a hard concept to understand. It is not about feeling full like preband. It is not about the band stopping you eating unhealthy fattening foods because conversely the more fills you have and the tighter your band gets the easier it becomes to choose those unhealthy , non satisfying foods(sliders). When I got banded back in 2009 everyone used to talk about the sweet spot. That magical point where you would be eating tiny portions of healthy food , losing weight and never be hungry. Well that is like unicorns, it's nice to dream about but it doesn't exist. Unfortunately the reality with the band is not the same as the marketing. I was told that I wouldn't be hungry, may only want 2 meals a day, would get sick if I ate too much etc. Well I have never only wanted 2 meals a day and would still wake up hungry . As for the throwing up if you eat too much it's more likely to be throwing up if you eat 1 bite of something that today your band decides it doesnt like that it was quite happy with yesterday. BUT ITS NOT ALL NEGATIVE. I lost all my excess weight plus more within 6 months of getting my band with very little really effort on my part. I didn't focus on protein first as in Aus that wasn't a thing. I just tried to eat small portions of healthy foods. Poached egg on toast was a good breakfast option although most days I could only manage half a slice. My go to food when I wanted something quick and easy was untoasted muesli with greek yogurt - that was a great substitute for lunch or dinner. So don't go chasing rainbows. Work with your band and don't have it too tight. Realise that the sensations that you get now are your new normal and that the fullness or lack of hunger may be different to what you are expecting them to be. And don't forget weight loss isn't a race. Slow and steady loss is fine.
  18. Omg.. Just choked on my Greek yogurt. That will be me I'm sure
  19. how much water do you all use and how much protein when you make fuzzy navel? i put a scoop in with my yogurt but want to try drinking it with water, don't want to waste it by experimenting either lol
  20. Hi. I just got banded yesterday by Dr. Bessler at Columbia Hospital in NYC. Procedure went well - I also had a hiatal hernia fixed. The pain is minimal -actually just the bloating (gas from the procedure) that is bothersome at this point. Feels good to move around as opposed to lying down. I start mushies today - do not have to do a "liquid only" phase. I'll keep you posted on how the eating goes. Its funny, I have not had anything to eat in over 36 hours but at this point have no hunger or desire to eat. I've line up my high Protein shake (smartforme - 35g protein), a bottle of gerber 2nd stage turkey and a light yogurt. I know I have to eat them today, just not that interested. Best wishes to all Starting BMI: 40.4 Goal BMI: 24.9

    Banded yesterday in NYC

beebee - My doctor does not require Clear Liquids - in fact did not require them before the surgery either. I do strictly follow all directions. It is mushies day after surgery. I had a shake yesterday (took all day to consume) and half a little bottle of baby food. tasted some yogurt. Was very satisfied. Kevin & Alfie - thanks and glad to see some NYC support. kevin - how long after surgery until you were completely pain free ? I still am a bit sore and cant sleep on my side yet.

    Wow Best Protein Concoction Ever

I ordered it online from www.netrition.com. A lot of the SF syrups taste fake, but the salted caramel tastes spot-on. Oh I forgot to list Almond Roca. My local Marhall's had a bottle of it in SF (Torani) for $3.99. Yum, I add it to my plain Greek yogurt.

    Last Meal...lol.

I'm 5 months out and I just had 2 eggs scrambled and two slices of a 6 oz sirloin, with leftovers for later. I didn't order a veggie because I had (gasp) a yogurt parfait instead! So, 2 oz of yogurt with a few crumbles, 2 eggs scrambled with cheese and about an ounce and a half of steak (it was kind of tough, so wasn't able to chew up the whole 2 oz portion).
