  1. Yes, you can't control what goes in your food when you eat in restaurants, but you can still GUESTIMATE your calories and track them in MyFitnessPal. No, it won't be as accurate as if you cook at home, but this has to be for the rest of our lives! It's not reasonable to expect us to never go out with friends, on dates, travel, etc. Stalls are a b***h. Drink your water, count calories so you know you're getting enough/not too much, and be patient!
  2. My doc told me the same thing. Don't eat out, cook at home. I think so I could control what goes in it?? How cute. I am alone, I work 40 hours a week, and do NOT feel like cooking and cleanup after. And often I get nauseous at smells, so the crock pot does not cut it. I do the best I can and right now, I am in a stall.....

How funny that you say that, Holly! I'm getting ready to go on vacation/trip, next week, and of course I had to go buy some new clothes and YES....I'm wearing XL now instead of XXL in Old Navy's shirts (I'm a fan of Old Navy). It's such a great feeling! Thank you for your kind words! ♥

    Post op necessities

I bought a ton of stuff, most of which I didn't use. I bought those little 2 oz disposable cups and didn't use a single one. Here is what I found helpful: 1. Use a salad plate instead of a huge dinner plate 2. I have some small (like 1 cup) freezer/dishwasher/microwave safe containers for portioning food into - many people swear by Souper cubes, but those are really expensive and don't seem very flexible when you have just one or two servings of something to freeze. 3. I sometimes use the toddler silverware, but it doesn't matter much 4. I use a regular glass, but I found that keeping a bottle of water with me on the couch right after surgery (right in my hand) really helped me drink more. I switched the bottles out every few hours so they would stay ice cold (some people prefer room temp liquids after surgery, but I needed iced cold) 5. Many people love sugar free ice pops, but it wasn't for me 6. Before you go in for surgery, clean your home, do your laundry and dishes, and get some protein drinks in the fridge. You won't be able to do these things easily for the first few days after surgery. Best of luck!
  5. humm I don't eat bread very often, and they do advise us to stay away from rice as it will fill you very quickly and has very little nutritional value. Try to eat more protein for example eat your chicken thigh first if you still have room veggies or salad next and rice last. processed foods are very easy to eat and I found don't fill me at all for example the other day I had a hotdog on 2 slices of toasted bread with grilled cheese I was able to eat all of it the pace I could pre surgery and felt I could have eaten more, but I didn't . Pasta is the same with me it doesn't always sit well. Don't listen to the people around you. I had a work mate say to me "oh for god sake will you eat something you are getting to skinny" well I still have a belly and have another 10kg to loose so don't listen. I did notice your BMI is low but you are a small build to going by your height. increase your protein that will help reduce muscle loss and help build it back up. Get in touch with your dietian if you had one if you don't have one look one up that has bariatric experience they should be able to help you with food choices etc . My Appetite was like yours at the start but once I hit 6 months my snacking urges kicked back in and I am currently having a hard time keeping that under check and I have put on a kilo this week and I have also been in a 6 week stall so that's dishearten for me. someone posted a youtube video from a bariatric dr advising against exercise in the first year of surgery but each to his own I guess depending on how much you exercise maybe give it a break until you feel better. Hope you do feel better soon.
  6. So, I see a lot of people and nutritionists and surgeons saying you must cook all your food at home and restaurant meals are terrible etc. Well, sure, in an ideal world you would be a gourmet health cook and have an extra three hours a day for meal prep and exercise, but that's just not reality. I travel 4-7 days a week for work, so I eat out almost every meal. I'm down 110 lbs total and 60 since surgery. Here are some suggestions for traveling/eating out: 1. Get a protein drink for breakfast, like Core Power, which can be bought at drug stores, supermarkets, convenience stores, and even some airports. This gets you a good chunk of your protein for not too many calories 2. Go to the grocery store when you can to buy things like deli meat, sugar free Greek yogurt, washed/chopped veggies and fruit, etc. 3. Watch those coffee drinks! I love me some Starbucks/Dunkin' but I limit it to just iced coffee with milk (2% if possible) and Splenda. No syrup, whipped cream, sugar, etc. I actually find that coffee and hot tea help keep me full. 4. Protein first: I've heard from lots of bariatric people that even years after surgery, if they start with low fat protein, their restriction kicks in and they can't eat too much. I try to order a protein forward meal, like grilled fish or shrimp. Sometimes I eat other kinds of meat, but I find I can't eat as much and I am more likely to get hungry later 5. Fill up on veggies. I have been hungry since right after surgery, but even if you lost your hunger, it will come back. Then, eat veggies with your protein. The fiber will keep you full. Salad is hard for me, but I still eat it because it just tastes so darn good 6. Figure out what your go-to restaurant meals are. These are things that you can get easily, like at chain restaurants. I like Chipotle bowls (no rice, beans, barbacoa, cheese, sour cream, and lettuce, with a bit of hot sauce), chili from just about anywhere, cheese burgers with no bun (I don't like the lettuce wraps; I just eat them with a fork and knife), etc. Ask for what you need. Want double veggies/no rice? Ask for it. You might get charged a dollar. If you feel like you will eat the carb if it's put on your plate, ask for them not to bring it. You're the customer. Be nice, but you're allowed to have the meal work for you. And tip well! 7. Don't try to be perfect. Just aim for doing a good job 80-90% of the time. I eat occasional sweets, but small amounts and not every day. The other day I ate a biscuit with JAM!!!

    June 2022 surgery buddies

Yikes 3 weeks is a long time. That will be difficult I’m sure. Do they give you a discount for the prescription on your Optifast ? It sounds expensive ! I was curious.. lol… I went and read about the Optifast. That sounds like a really good product.

    Eating too much?

Thank you so much. I feel better reading this. I feel like it was from me eating too fast and too much. For two weeks, I’ve just “sipped”. My “meals” take about 2 hours to finish. I got carried away today.

Thank you🤗 I’m hoping that this is the week I hear something! I only started thinking about this is January so it hasn’t really been that long, but I am so ready to GO! You sound very disciplined! Good for you! The waiting is easier to handle during the week because I’m at school. I AM concerned that Cigna might ding me with 3 months of weight loss management BUT that would put recovery for me over the summer, and I think I can handle the disappointment. Good luck and thank you for the encouragement. ❤️

    Eating too much?

For ME, i discovered i was suddenly able to chug a bottle of water (400ml) by accident around the 2 week mark (i was thirsty and forgot i was supposed to be sipping) Prior to that i was sipping my liquids from a 2 fl oz shot glass, probably getting in maybe 250 ml a day. I dunno if this is “normal” but it happened. So long as you aren’t in pain or get any adverse effects from drinking liquids, i figure its all good. Your heart palpitations though. For ME, heart palpitations means i ate too fast or too much and is the first sign of an oncoming dumping episode. How about eating/drinking less at one sitting and see if you still get them? Then you could see if there is a co-relation for YOU.

You can do it! Maybe you’ll hear back tomorrow since it’s the weekend now. I scheduled my surgery 2 months out to save up money (self-pay) and it’s been a long wait but nothing compared to some people’s insurance requirements with 6 month weight-loss diet and nutrition, psych consults, etc. I try to look at it as I only have 3 weeks left to get things done around here before surgery puts me out 🙃
  13. I'm 11 months out. I can tell you that the amount of food I can eat has been that same since about month 6. If I go out to eat with hubby, I usually eat about 1/3 of the meal. I take it home and we split the remaining portion for lunch the next day. I am thankful I can't eat like I did. It does take time to eat. Friends and family eat so much faster, I understand what you are saying. Be sure you check in with your dietitian. That is important as you are worried about malnutrition. I can also tell you that I lost ALOT of hair up until about month 8? 9? But it has definitely started to regrow! That was devastating to me.... It will grow back

Less than month preop weight gain

You’re losing weight. The body takes awhile to adjust. Stick with it and you will see results. Weigh yourself as often as you need, but understand the body will resist at time - that doesn’t mean your composition isn’t changing. It is. I’m in it with you! Mine was 3/8.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi Goldengirl321, My surgery is scheduled for April 27. I am planning on taking a little over 2 weeks off. Hopefully that will be enough time. When do you start your pre-op diet? Is it liquid only?
  16. So I had the sleeve done 3/14 and so far I have no issues. My stomach tolerates everything I introduce. I can intake liquids with ease and i have restriction with food. The day I arrived my weight was 311. Day of surgery I asked to weigh again I was 306. After surgery I weighed myself (I know I wasn’t supposed to I was 295). Today I’m 299.8 and I’m scared to be back over 300 lbs but why am I gaining weight? I’m not even eating enough food to be gaining anything. Is this normal? I’m so afraid of messing this up or failing but seeing the scale go up is sending my anxiety through the roof.

    Pregnancy after sleeve UPDATE

Congratulations! I got pregnant while still overweight and the goal was to maintain weight, so don’t worry about stalls. Also my midwife said babies are like parasites and get what they need from our bodies whatever else we are doing. Sounds like you’re getting excellent care. I’m a teacher too and caught Covid right after the masks came off. It was brutal with double pneumonia even though I had had Covid in 2020 and had all my shots and boosters. Just an observation in my son’s pediatrician’s office and from my elementary school, this version of Covid is causing a lot of secondary bacterial infections and creating Diabetes I, Crohn’s disease, and PANDAS. If you’re not getting better from Covid at week 2 keep asking questions and ask for antibiotics. I’m not a doctor! My school has 200 kids and 4 brand new cases of Diabetes I, 3 Crohn’s, and 1 Pandas is a lot. Something’s going on, ask questions.
  19. At this point, I'm starting to think the pain in my side was not caused by what I ate or a stone. I was reminded by a family member that I did fall earlier this week, so maybe the position I slept in exacerbated the issue by Friday. I fall very often, so it never even crossed my mind as a possibility. Especially considering I wasn't in pain when the fall happened. Perhaps the timing just made me panic. I don't think it has artificial sweeteners, but here's a picture of the label in case I'm missing something. The diarrhea seemed like a direct reaction to how much I had drank, but it did appear to get the rest of that salsa out of my system so I guess drinking it helped in some way.
  20. 2 weeks of a liquid diet and Surgery on the 18th. need to stock up on a few more things that i have coming from bariatricpal, need to hit up a dispensary (high CBD to low THC stuff) and get some pain medication as well just incase.

    Weightloss stall during your period?

I'm still sorting out the pattern, but I think my weight loss stalls out/slows way down during my period. Mine isn't every 30 days but when your husband notices the pattern it is probably happening. LOL!

Thanks Nikki & Summerseeker 🙂 I'm also not great at waiting, so have had to give myself a bit of a talking to! I'm staying off instagram as it was making me do exactly what you said summerseeker - I was thinking, oh if my surgery had gone ahead, this or that would have happened by now! I'm giving myself a couple of weeks to chill out, then will get back into some good eating patterns for a couple of weeks and then it will be LRD diet time (again!!). Trying to stay positive, and hope for third time lucky😂.
  23. I am 8 months post surgery and have hit my ideal weight. But I still can't eat like a normal person. 2 spoons of anything and I feel full. I have to wait another 15 minutes to eat another 2 spoons. I'm losing more weight than expected and I'm worried that I might be underweight soon. I don't wish to eat like I did pre-surgery but I do wish I can eat at least half the portion I used to eat at half the time. A normal portion of food takes me an hour or two to finish. I'm worried that I'll be malnourished and losing a lot of hair because of it. I've seen that some people have gained back some weight after a year into their surgery. I just want to eat like a normal person again. Sort of regret getting the surgery because I did not anticipate the depression that comes with not being able to eat and the muscle loss I've experienced. Can anyone share their experience 1 year post surgery? I need to know if I can eat normally again. 2 3 bites of food and then being full and not wanting to eat anymore is torture and unhealthy for my body.

    Anyone have an Abcess drain?

What surgery did you get? if you can update your sidebar with all your information. It helps when answering questions. you can do this in your profile section and click on surgery and you can add all the information. Good luck to you on that. I have surgery in 2 weeks.
  25. Good morning everyone, Did anyone have an abcess drain and sleep on there tummy? Just curious it's been a week with this thing and I'm tired of laying on my back but afraid to risk anything as I've been paranoid due to the in and out of the hospital for the past month Update : last week of Feb - surgery First week of Mar - spasum 2nd week - found out i had a hematoma that would go away on its own ( admitted ) 3rd week - it turned to an abcess so they inserted a abdominal drain ( admitted ) 4th week - went to the clinic to remove it but the discharge was yellow and my wbc was high so back to being admitted we went God willing April is better. Anyone with experience please if possible share the details i would greatly appreciate it 😊
