Is it just me or is this not as easy as it seems?

You need to walk, this helps the body function regain its activity and reduces the gas pains. Vitamins: Try liquid Multivitamin drinks to sip on with your other fluids. Very important!!. I got one at costco called EcoDrink. It comes in a box of 30 packets in orange and berry flavor. You mix one pkt with 16 oz of bottled or filtered Water. It comes with a bottle you can use to sip it with. They said I had to sip very slowly--you should make sure to be sipping your drinks and liquids slowly. I have had a bypass--similar prep 10 yrs ago. My sleeve will be revision surgery, so I am taking extra care in doing my preop diet, sipping, and getting my Proteins and liquids in each day. I hope this suggestion helps you feel better--it will get better!!! I was sleeved on Monday and omg!!! I hurt so bad and now the gas pains hurt really bad. I don't feel like myself, i am dizzy and i feel like i can't care for myself. I guess i thought that this surgery would not be as bad as having a gall bladder removed or something, but i was wrong. I can't hardly sleep and my stomach keeps turning into knots. Im not trying to be negative, i just want ppl to know that this surgery is serious and is not an easy answer. The gas pain hurts alot and i also had severe diarrhea. The diarrhea has calm down some but the gas hurts. I too am worried about getting in all these Vitamins and proteins. I felt as if i wasn't getting nutrients which was the reason why i feel so bad and lacking energy. However, taking these vitamins on an empty stomach seems to be too much. Can anyone help me or give me advice about feeling better and making this healing process go a little faster? I feel so miserable. How long is this going to last? What happens if i don't get all my vitamins or Protein in? Arrrr....Im so worried about everything. PLZ help!!! Love u each. Sheena -
Lap-Band with Gastric Plication in one surgery
aliamah1998 replied to aliamah1998's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi, is your consultation at NYU? I am going on the 28th for my consultation @ NYU and will let you know what they say. I have Oxford, which insurance do you have? Some previous lapbanders have had to have a revision because of slippage and the doctors have had to do the plication to hold it in place. This is what i gathered from gathering info from diff forums. Also because its a revision the insurance will cover it... im wondering if when the doctor puts the band in and feels the band might slip and he does the plication will it then be covered for first time banding, just a thought. -
MGB or RNY? Can't decide

What do you think will be hardest for you?
Matt Z replied to Love2Travel816's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The not eating and drinking is easier to overcome than you'd realize. Get yourself an 30 mins hourglass, having the physical item helps the process greatly! Start the exercise habit now, I didn't do this when I had the band installed and it really made things exponentially harder, with my revision to bypass, I joined a gym and started going every day while I was still out of work, now it's become an easy habit to continue as I've had time to ensure it becomes part of my life and it's been one of the best things I could have done. If you don't have a scale, get one that does body fat. Honestly, having this 1 extra measurement can save so much frustration and depression. It's almost every other day now that I either gain weight or just don't lose, *BUT* I'm dropping body fat. So even though I'm gaining *weight* I'm losing body fat, so I'm still on the right track and I know that what I'm doing is working, even if that weight number doesn't keep dropping. Inch for Inch, muscle weighs more than fat, so DO NOT obsess over 1 number! -
I would also check out the revision forums on the bypass and sleeve boards you will find more people who have already done the revision. In addition, you may want to also consider plication or the band with plication. Plication is similar to the sleeve but instead of removing your stomach it is folded in on itself and sewn. It is a new procedure but it initial studies have shown weight loss similar to the sleeve. Good Luck with everything Michelle

I had my revision (band to GB) on May 13th, stayed in the hospital until May 15th and have been recuperating at home since. The pain was awful immediately after the surgery, pretty bad the day after, bad the following days and it has been manageable today. I used the liquid hydrocone until yesterday but decided no more because... (TMI coming), I had no BM since the surgery and I was starting to get worried. Today I had my first BM and it felt like such a relief. I had to use Milk of Magnesia and Benefiber, but it was worth it (even just for the peace of mind). I'm constantly sipping in my 2 TBS cup so I hope I'm meeting my liquid requirements (I'm not tracking but sipping constantly). I'm having a hard time with drinking 2 Protein shakes each day. Yesterday, I managed 1 and a bit of another one. Today I'm still sipping through one. I'm not taking my Vitamins as of yet as my surgeon told me to wait for a few days until the stomach can tolerate it better; she did tell me not to miss my Omeprazole dose once daily for a month so I'm careful about that. I'm trying to walk around; though I live in a studio apartment so there's only so much space to walk around, but I have even dared to dance a little bit and it was okay. I have weighted myself a couple of times and I was a bit surprised to see that the scale went up since surgery. I have read a few posts of people freaking out about gaining a few pounds in the days after surgery and I can't seem to relate. I honestly do not care right now. This is surprising because my number one reason for having the GB was to look better (there, I said it). Yet, the scale not moving (or moving in the wrong direction) does not bother me at all now. I can only focus on making it through the recovery stage in one piece and as healthy as possible. I ventured over the "complications" forum and decided that it is not a healthy place for me right now. I'm glad people with complications have a place to post and get support and help but after reading a few posts, I got so paranoid and worried. I had to stop. I have had moments of regretting the surgery, especially when the pain was very pronounced. I still have these moments when I think that I could be full of energy right now and go to work and hang out with friends... but they pass quickly. So I hope I'm doing okay after all.

Revisions can happen with any type of surgery for many reasons. Many of us with the sleeve have lost the weight and kept it off with no revision. I'm almost five years out I maintain in the 130's. Understand not many vets stay. Life becomes normal they maintain their weight and have no need for this site. You will meet mostly new people and people that gain. What I wish people knew before choosing the sleeve: If you have issues keeping on a diet plan and changing behaviors, I would look into another type of surgery Sleeves usually can tolerate sugar no dumping syndrome because our intestines are not rerouted. If sugar is an weakness you may want to go for MGB When you get to maintaining phase don’t think the work is over. Not everyone will gain. But if you don’t monitor your weight and diet it can turn into a 20, 60 100 pound gain. This is what I see repeatedly with sleeve patient on this site: Frustrates me that they are not told this pre surgery. Sleeve restriction becomes less as you progress out from surgery (your stomach is not back to full size) Our pouches are banana shape the other surgeries are egg shape. Just because you can consume more food does not mean you need to over eat. You can fill the space without going over your calories and macros Many confuse less restriction with stretching (stretching is rare, have a surgeon diagnose it) Many eat around their surgery (you can eat around/graze any type of surgery ) Grazing is eating many smaller meals, healthy and unhealthy that total over your calories and macros. It’s the sensation of no restriction. It’s as if you never had surgery. You will gain weight. Bariatric surgery is not the easy way out. Its far more than restriction. Its work.

Please help my surgery is Monday and I am still unsure which procedure is better for me. I have a failed lapband, BMI of 33.2, CW 189. I read the forums how sleeve patients usually regain after years and go back for revision. However is MGB to invasive for my weight loss. I don’t want to lose to much. Please help me decide. More heads and opinions are better than one :)

I would look for a surgeon who has a better track record. I lost over 150# in 14 months after revising from band. I have been maintaining for over 3 years...

I'm having my revision done on Monday 1st May and I'm suppose to have it in 1 surgery, however I'm aware that sometimes it can't be done for one reason or another. How many people went to have it all done in 1 surgery but woke up to find out they couldn't? And why? I'm so so nervous they won't be able to and I'll be without the sleeve and the band [emoji30]

I've confirmed a surgery date of 10/3/2011 with Dr. Aceves for my revision. I know that's still a couple of months out, but if there is anybody else going that week, let me know. Even though I've been considering a revision for three months now, it all feels rather sudden. My band has been completely unfilled (sprung a leak) since May 2011. I've had a CT scan (no erosion) and an upper Endoscopy (slight erosion of my esophagus due to reflux) in an effort to get my revision approved by Insurance (HealthNet.) But no luck. Although HealthNet covers revisions, the Medical Group I belong to does not! Grrrrrrr. I've scheduled two weeks off work for recovery. I've never revealed that I had a lapband and I'm not telling work about the sleeve either. As close as I am to everyone, it's just not a part of my life I want to share. I don't want everybody's "encouragement" when I'm losing and I certainly don't want their scrutiny when I indulge a little! All they know is that my weight has fluctuated a lot in the past three years and they've all been very kind not to mention my current gain. I’m unhappy that I have to go through surgery again, but I’m relieved that I have a plan. I’ve been through recovery before, so I (think) I know what I’m in for ….. and I’ve done the fasting, mushies and Protein drinks before, so no surprises there. I’m glad I’ve got this board to read when I need support.

I have a Surgery Date!
Eddie Giddens (MsDad) replied to Mim's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Congrats on your surgery date Mim! I'm a band to sleeve revision as well, with my date looming on 9/6. I have been lucky that the only problem I've had with my band is just that it failed. My surgeon told me at my last appointment that they're finding up to 40-50% of bands are failing so at least I know now it wasn't just me. Feel free to check in any time you'd like with questions as I'll be about a month ahead of you. I can keep you in the loop as to what to expect. -
Well, it is Friday and I am faced with getting through the weekend without stressing out over my first appointment at MBS on Wednesday. I also have a dentist appointment just prior to the MBS appointment. Haven't been to the dentist in too long. I'm going now because I have insurance and because it is almost two year out since my last knee revision and I'm still infection free so I think we have it licked this time. It took four years and three reimplants but I think Dr Aggarwal was just what I needed. I've had two protein shakes today and a medifast bar. Tonight I'm make a taco salad minus the taco part and topping with salsa and guacamole. I've got some good books lined up to read this weekend. If I'm reading I'm not eating. I'm really counting on what I've read about RNY as far as very little hunger and feeling full. So I'm write Monday about how the weekend went.

I hear that! I'm a woman married to a woman, too. I wish I had more concrete wisdom to offer, but my situation isn't exactly like yours. I'm having Lap-Band-to-gastric bypass revision surgery sometime in 4-6 weeks and my wife isn't -- because she is not overweight. However, I've become aware of relationship problems that can arise when one spouse has a drastic lifestyle change and the other does not, and that's something my wife and I have discussed at length. My marriage is wonderful and extremely valuable to me. Re: smoking and surgery: my surgeon does not perform surgery on smokers, but I was one until just a few months ago. A 2- or 10-year period of cessation isn't universal, then, clearly. Is there another surgeon your wife could consult, if still interested in pursuing surgery? If it indeed happens, though, that you have surgery and she does not, you are wise to think now about what the future might look like and proactive in talking to the program psychologist about it. None of these things are beyond your (plural "your") control, but you probably will need to do some hard work and thinking. What will it be like if there's envy of what you're able to accomplish? What will it be like if you enjoy living in a more healthy manner and aren't able to maintain respect if your spouse, without this super helpful tool, isn't able to keep up? Will there be tension if you have more energy and want to do new and different things, going out more, trying new activities, etc.? Being able to be really honest about bad feelings can go a long way toward protecting against their effects. The best to you!

I've been too tight since my port revision when they filled me up. Since they are such a long drive, and I could get down liquids I was waiting till my appt (today) to get some taken out. I've been PBing an awful lot this past month and spent a lot of days on no solids.. But today I told him I needed a little unfill.. he said they put 1.5cc in there, and for the first time they got the needle in the port in the blink of an eye! No poking and prodding, and it was so easy to access. I was just beaming hah! He got drawback like he expected, and took .5cc out. He gave me crackers, but crackers never had a problem going down anyway so.. when I got home, I made chicken for dinner. The REAL test for me.. My little bite well-chewed went down just fine. It was horribly gross though(don't buy the Chili's do-it-yourself meal things.. blech), so I heated up 6 swedish meatballs instead (1 serving size). I ate 4 of them, pain free and "PB" free.. and satisfied. This could be my sweet spot, hooooray! :whoo:

My surgeon was Dr Alberto Aceves. He has done over 6,000 WLS procedures including the band. He has done more than 1500 sleeves. I did not have a band revision, but when I was in the hospital, there was a patient who had just had one by him. She looked great.

I was sleeved in Feb. 2018, revised to RnY Oct. 2018 for reflux. I was taking the max dose of prescription omeprazole twice a day plus Tums, as needed. Still woke up sometimes with acid in my nose. I had not had reflux prior to the sleeve surgery. The RnY did completely resolve the GERD issue, but I miss the restriction I had with my sleeve. It was really tight, which I considered a good thing. I do have restriction with the RnY, but nowhere near as much. Regardless, I am happy I had the revision before I destroyed my esophagus and teeth.
-
My surgeon said that an RnY on a "virgin" stomach is more restrictive than on a revision. However, adding the malabsorption is what would improve weight loss. This was why I chose the sleeve initially. I really didn't want to deal with malabsorption issues, but you gotta take it as it comes. Still no nsaids, though. Good luck with your surgeon appointment. Let us know how it goes.

How did you come up with a "goal weight" or have you?
heartfire replied to Laurinda's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I don't think you're crazy at all! Why not put 199 as your initial goal and then revise from there? I have seen people say they do that. As for myself, I fooled with the BMI calculator til I got into the healthy range and picked that as my goal (140, BMI 24.8) and then decided to drop it down to 130 since I really want to get as close to that as possible. I graduated HS in 1986 weighing around 120. At 40, I really don't expect to see that ever again but it'd be nice to get close. I may decide to change it back up to 140 but we'll see. My highest weight was, I think 260, documented is 250 but I'd lost weight before I'd gone to the Dr and saw the 250, so really, anything anywhere near a "normal BMI" is going to make me happy! And who knows maybe I will get back in to the 120's!! Wouldn't THAT be shocking!!!! -
Hi everyone I am new to this site and having revision surgery next week from band to bypass and would love some suggestions of food to buy before I go into to the hospital and some comments about what to expect. I am excited but very nervous at the same time. Looking forward to reading your comments.

Felt a little out of place at pre-op class, smallest person there
Youngun replied to Jenny12's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I sort of felt the same way. I only told one friend (a stick thin friend) about getting the surgery and she told me I wasn't big enough yet - I should wait. But I thought to myself why should I wait? Why should I wait till my blood pressure is trough the roof and highly medicated? why should I wait for wear and tear on my bones and joints? Why should I go on feeling tired and hungry ALL THE TIME! So at a BMI of 31 I decided to do it. One of the ladies in the hospital came in and chatted with me and said she was surprised at how small I was, but good for me for taking action! She wasn't that big either - I think her BMI was a 37 because she already had the lapband but was getting it revised to a sleeve. -
Welcome Lapband. I had a revision from band to RNY as well. Welcome to the boards!
