How do you get your protein in? I am just started my 4th week post op.
JamieLogical replied to LisaLou30's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I was on soft foods, it was a lot of eggs and dairy. I was allowed Protein shakes, but I was supposed to be getting 100g of protein in so I was definitely getting 60 or so from real food. I had scrambled eggs with cheese melted on top, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, Shelly's Baked Ricotta, string cheese.... Once I was allowed some meat, I would do shredded chicken (big fan of Jack Daniel's shredded chicken!) or tuna salad. When I was allowed ground meats and legumes, I would do chili or turkey meatballs. Hope that helps some! -
How do you get your protein in? I am just started my 4th week post op.

I'm at six weeks and still have at least one protein shake w 24g each morning. Helps me reach goal. Most of what I eat is strictly protein. Eggs, cheese, greek yogurt etc. Today I tried Atkins frozen dinner and it has another 28g. -
Yes and No. I think the answer totally depends on how you ate before. If you ate a lot of fast food and junk, then the answer would be no, you need to change. If you ate healthy foods before, but way to much, then yes, you could eat the same things. For me, I still eat many of the same things, but with modifications. Like if I want a hamburger or hot dog at a cook out, I eat it, but without the bun. I tend to get stuck on the bun. I don't eat french fries anymore, one because they aren't to healthy and two because they get stuck. I still eat baked and bbq chicken. We do eat a lot more fish now, it's yummy. I don't eat steak anymore due to getting stuck. I've never been a big sandwich eater, so I don't eat those. While I use to make a lot of Desserts, I don't now, so that is a change. If I do make something I eat one small piece and bring the remainder to my work for co-workers or send it to the hubby's office. In the place of Pasta I often use spagetti squash or if in a pinch I will use whole grain angel hair pasta. I still eat my veggie pizza- but one slice instead of a whole or half of a pizza. Breakfast use to be a biscuit or two from McDonalds- now it's a cup of light and fit 2x Protein yogurt with fresh berries. My weight has been a slow steady decline, which my doc is happy with. Of course I would like it to be better. I will be meeting with my nutritionist next month with lots of questions and my food diary. So, basically I think the answer to your question is totally subjective.

WLS on 10/15 and i still get so full after just a few bites
Savedbyamazinggrace replied to Sweetcarol238's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery on November of 2013.....I can eat a cup of greek yogurt. I asked for a larger bougie though. I would think that you should be able to eat more than that now. Your new tummy will stretch some. hows the weight loss coming? Are you healthy and able to get enough water in ? These things are a must.....you have to be able to get enough protein, nutrition and water in to live a healthy life. I would call your Dr. and see what he as to say. You shouldnt have to spend the whole day working on getting food in a t this point ; / -
About to enter the puree stage and need help.
Stewness posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all!!! I'm about to enter the puree stage of my post op diet on Friday and was looking for some help/advice. In the liquid stage, I'm able to get down about 8-11 oz of liquid for my "meals" no problem. I have a feeling that will change when I switch to purées. Any suggestions how much food I should be eating per meal? Also, any suggestions for recipes and or shopping staples? I already stocked up on Greek yogurt but would love some suggestions on other staples. Plus I have only been able to find a handful of recipes online. Any help or suggestions are appreciated. -
Looking for Breakfast Ideas

Thanks for all the great ideas. @@Cervidae I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I can't stand even frozen yogurt. Too much yogurt taste. Greek is the worst! It smells almost as bad as it tastes. I've tried fried eggs, poached, mayo and custard all were a no go. It's frustrating because I love eggs and my baked custard recipe is high protein/low carb and yummy. @@Cape Crooner. I'll try that. Maybe egg beaters will agree with my tummy. @@2goldengirl I haven't tried boiled. Here's hoping! @@Sophie74656 I've seen protein pancakes as well but I wonder what to put on them. I can't imagine maple syrup is allowed. -

Can we talk about food aversion
nomorefattypatty replied to newmebithebypass's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Cottage cheese and peaches and greek yogurt are my rescue foods also. There are days when I eat food, but there are days that every time I think about food I get nauseous. Dont be afraid to stay on a lighter diet when this happens. Sometimes you have to go back to lighter diet and slowly add things back to your diet. I'm on my 3rd year after having the sleeve and I've learned to pay attention to my stomach more. I was 238, surgery at 209, The smallest I got was 142, I gained back about 25 pounds but when I'm strict with my snacking I can now easily lose weight like when I was 40 but I'm 57 and the sleeve is a good surgery but I have to revise to bypass surgery due to acid reflux. ISOPURE aka ISOPUKE
Rev Me Up! replied to Sunny702's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I may not be very popular in saying this, but I never was able to meet my Protein requirements during liquids for this reason. All protein liquids made me sick. I couldn't even smell them. I spent the first 2 weeks drinking full sugar gatorade (diluted), Water, iced tea (unsweetened), and some Soup broth - no protein. As soon as I was cleared for full liquids I started drinking liquid yogurt, kefir, and milk. I didn't really come close to my protein requirement until I was able to eat chicken and cottage cheeese, and even then it was a small amount. Really focus on your hydration right now - that is the most important thing. Get liquids in and then do your best with the protein. You might want to dilute the Isopure 50/50 with water and see if that helps. Don't worry about the weight, it will come off either way. -
I'm 9 days post op band to sleeve revision. I have been on liquids such as Atkins shake, Jello, ice pops and yogurt and broth.. Tonight I attended a friends party and I ate very little guacamole and some fresh mozzarella cheese.i had no discomfort and chewed it well.. ? My doctor has me on liquids for first three weeks before moving onto purée or scramble egg, mash potato. Was this a mistake?

I am extinguished about 6 oz of food and 800 calories a day. This is what I had yesterday to give u an example I am 3 months out. Breakfast. 1 whole egg plus one egg white- over medium, 1 slice 40 calorie whole wheat bread, 1 t raw honey on bread Snack..8 oz skim milk with one oz. coffee with a sweet in low. (Coffee milk) lunch.. 6 oz boiled shrimp, 2 t catsup with 1 T of light mayo (for a dip) dinner : shake. 1 cup skim milk, 1/2 cüp Greek yogurt nonfat, 1 whole banana , 1cup of diced fresh strawberry ..I add vanilla and a sweet in low with a little ice. It was. Delish Evening. 1 chicken leg..cooked without the skin Tomato and cucumber salad. That totaled up to 842 calories and 89 grams Protein. This was a high protein day for me. I like yo get in at least 70 -75 If eat weight watchers mozzarella sticks if I need to get more protein at the end of the day. Ps. I also had a sugar free Popsicle in the evening. At the beginning u won't be able to eat hardly anything..Stick to exactly to what doc tell u to eat after surgery ..by week 6 ..I was ok to eat most things. But prior to that it was a hit or miss. I also had to stay on liquids one more week than suggested since the purée foods was tough on meet.

Huberm, I'm almost 4 months out, so not exactly a veteran. I can tolerate anything, but portion size definitely varies by food type. I just came back from lunch out where I had a bowls of chili that was completely satisfying. Last night, I had 3 meatballs for dinner with some Greek yogurt for dessert. For most mornings, I have some cottage cheese and then an hour later a Protein bar. I know this sounds like a ridiculously small amount of food, which might be anxiety inducing. But being on the other side it feels completely normal. I've yet to "wish" that I could eat a larger meal. In fact, it's kind of liberating being satisfied with the new normal quantities. As for drinking: On an empty stomach I can pretty much drink as fast as I used to. No, that doesn't mean chugging a full beer. But at the gym, I bring a bottle of G2 or Vitamin Water Zero and in between exercise take a few big gulps and then a few minutes later can gulp some more. The only thing I can't do is drink while eating -- there just isn't enough room. So, if I go out and want to have a drink, I get it and drink it BEFORE the food comes. Then I eat with no liquids and then ~30 minutes later, I can start sipping on something. This takes a little getting used to, but is a minuscule inconvenience compared to going through life as a fat person. Good luck!

So I'm 6 days post op and I've definitely lost weight. I can feel it and my clothes are starting droop in different ways. I still have a pretty good amount of gas in me and it's been difficult to drink or eat. Eating is actually the hardest. I can maybe get through a few bits of yogurt and a few bits of apple sauce before the pain comes. I've come to realize it's not that somethings wrong but that the gas they pumped into me during surgery is desperately trying to get out, believe me, I want it out!!!! It does hurt and makes it really hard to get fluids in. Walking is also somewhat painful but I keep doing it in small intervals. Will keep you updated. So far so good.

Hi, I'm scheduled for my surgery this Monday. Having a terrible time with the protein shakes. I have tried Unjury and GNC I get them down then they come right back up! Tonight I decided to go through my paperwork for day before surgery list of what I am allowed to eat. As I looked I notices that the 2 week liquid diet does not have yogurt or oatmeal on it BUT the day before surgery it's on the list?? Does that make sense to anyone? I would be doing fine with my protein if I could be eating Greek yogurt!!! I called my doctors office but they are closed until tomorrow.

11 days out 14.5lbs down but having some problems
The redhead posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello everything has been going well except.... I am starving like many still, I know it will go away soon, but I don't get to really eat anything for about 2 weeks more. I absolutely cannot swallow another bit of Jello. I would go as far to say jello can go F*** itself ;)I drink broth about once a day, thats all I can handle anymore. I drink Crystal light and have SF popsicles alot as well as hot tea. My main issue is protien. I bought many many many kinds there is not one named on this site I feel I have not tried $$$$. I fell in love with isoflex. The issue is today I took 3 drinks of it and all of it came up. i waited a while and tried again and the taste and smell of the Protein make me sick..... it also found its way painfully out not only my mouth if you catch me...(this is humiliating). I am not yet suppose to have yogurt or anything to mix it with. My stomach would not stop felling like I was dying so I broke down and had some (three spoons) of almond milk ice cream that were in my fridge and my stomach settled almost immediately. I can't continue to use that as A.) I am not to that stage yet and B.) there is a smidgen of sugar and I am on the SF part still. I take all my Vitamins and prevacid 2x daily. I will be asking the fill in Dr. at my surgeons office (mines on vaca for a month). I would love any suggestions. I am worried they will move me up to puree or mushies early to make sure I get my protein in, but as nice as that sounds I want the benefit of the jumpstart weight loss that comes with the liquid diet. I have done an embarrassing amount of research and there seems to be a pattern with those losing a higher amount the first month and the diet they were told to follow. I know it all evens out at the end, but it feels like at this moment the weight will never come off and the finish-line is too far to see. I know thats not true but thats what feels like reality. Thank you in advanced. -
How's all my 10-11-12ers doing today? Hard to believe 2 weeks ago today I came home from hospital! Weight-wise, I'm doing good-total loss from DOS to today -15.5 lbs.! However, my cals. are staying pretty low (600) since I can't yet tolerate yogurt or pudding (forget Farina-never a fan, can't get mire than tsp. down!) so that's been a bummer. I was only taking Tylenol but after going to work last Monday, 10/22, too soon, the burning came back and now I'm taking Vicodin! I'm Ok-saw my surgeon Tuesday-just overworked the muscles that are trying to heal by too much movement. Ouch!!! The burn is getting less and less every day, but I truly felt better a week ago than I do today. Don't push yourselves too hard! Take it from me, itsnot worth it! I think I was trying to prove to everyone and myself that the WLS was no big deal- wrong! It's a life changing event-it's a verrrrrry big deal!!

March 7th Sleeved - High Protein Liquid diet ideas
acummins73 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello every one, I had my surgery on March 7th and I'm looking for some recipe ideas for my high protein liquid diet. I was on clear liquids for a week after my surgery and then moved to the high protein liquid diet and will be on that until April 11th. I found out that my stomach can no longer tolerate milk at this point so I'm left with broth, veggie and bean soups (pureed) and mashed sweet potatos. I can also do oatmeal and cream of wheat. Yogurt and pudding upset my stomach due to the dairy. Just looking for any ideas. I have a couple more weeks left on this diet and I'm kind of getting tired of drinking Unjury chicken broth protein shakes all of the time. Thanks. -
Sugar Free Junk
gohelpyourself replied to gohelpyourself's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I rarely add sugar to anything... I was mainly referring to the Jello and puddings which have been sitting in the fridge since before surgery. I been getting in my Protein shakes, greek yogurt and some cream Soups. All going down very well minus the gurgling and sensation that I need to belch. -
I struggled before surgery and still do now...wasnt sure if exactly what Activa was supposed to do.. So thank you for posting this. are Acidophilus Pearls the same thing that is added to the yogurt and cottage cheese? Where can I buy this?

I use Musclegen Research GENEPRO Molecular Tri Protein Peptide. I put one scoop in 3/4 cup of 2% Braum's milk, along with half a packet of Carnation Breakfast Essentials No Sugar. The Genepro dissolves completely with very little taste and the Carnation Breakfast Essential favors the milk nicely. You get 30 grams of protein with each tablespoon scoop. You can also mix the Genepro with anything...yogurt, oatmeal, milk poured over Cereal, etc. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Heading to full liquids
ruaamy replied to ortega07's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started yesterday. I ate 2 tsp of Greek yogurt and 1tsp of SF pudding and did fine. So today I ate 2 oz of cream of broccoli soup but it took me 45 minutes and my stomach made every noise possible. I am only one week post op -
I start the purée stage this week, and I have prepared and frozen two weeks worth of meals so it will be easy for me, since I start back to work tomorrow too. I used MyFitnessPal to assess the nutritional values for each recipe. My plan is to use these recipes plus porridge, yogurt, and puréed fruit to get me through it. They all have the sign-off of my dietitian, but may or may not be on your plan. I tasted the smallest amount of each one so I can say that in my opinion, they all taste good and offer some variety. I shared the recipes, including how to purée chicken, to the Recipe Sharing section of the food and Nutrition forum. I hope it is helpful!

I always tried to find ways to sneak extra Protein into everything, even normally carby dishes. ...add vanilla Protein Powder to the egg batter of French toast ...add Garden of Life Raw Fit, an extra egg and unflavored powder to Bob's Red Mill whole grain pancake mix. Tastes even better than regular. I make a big batch, freeze em and have 30 second microwave protein pancakes anytime I Want! ....mix my whole grain Cereal (Kashi Golean or bran nuts) into Greek yogurt watered down with a little milk. ...use Premier Protein vanilla as my coffee creamer. Or even the chocolate when I'm in the mood for a mocha. ....muscle milk cake batter protein powder, milk and cottage cheese tastes like cheesecake! ....OJ and vanilla protein powder frozen makes a great dreamsicle It's crazy how many new things I've discovered that are so yummy, and still good for me.
