    New Lap Band

I have had my Band sicne 2007 my weightloss was wonderful and then in mid 2008 it just stopped, no matter what I do it does not go down it goes up. I have been filled and un filled as we call it here. I have suffered three different times from a dilated esophagus, my band gets very tight weeks after the fill, I vomit so hard that I sob afterwards. I have developed all over again GERD, night reflux and a bit of a cough. I have re gained 20 pounds and all I get from my Dr. is well maybe this is where your supposed to be with your weight, well no I don't think so. I requested a revision with the same Surgeon last year and I was refused twice by my health plan due to new guiodelines and such. I exercise daily and walk and yes I even still watch my diet and no matter what I am regaining and not losing. My question is can the lap band become defective after so many adjustments in the port and a few times the nurse could not find the right area in the port and I would get stuck several times. would a new Lap Band help resolve these issues I don't know and the last time I seen the Dr. he was in such a hurry that he rushed me through the appointment due to his office being over booked. I eat very little due to the pain with swallowing and the vomiting. I contacted the Dr. on Thursday and well no one even gets bak withme. Maybe I need a different Bariatric Dr. This surgery is supposed to help the patient not make them get worse.
  2. That's who will be doing my revision have you had your procedure done yet ?? Sent from my Z981 using the BariatricPal App

    5 days post op PAIN

I am 5 days post op revision VBG to bypass. I am really sore on my left side and have zero energy to walk but I am going back to work tomorrow! I'm ready to add protein drinks next week! My dr is telling me after three weeks of liquids then I have four weeks of soups before soft foods! Ugh this is my post op pic
  5. HI everyone. I had a Lap band to a Mini Bypass revision on July 5th. So far. I have lost 23 pounds, but somehow I keep feeling that it should be a bit more. after some difficulty in the first two months with my eating. With a lot of food rejection, I now feel that I can eat quite well. I can eat a small size of fish, or one whole very well cooked and soft chicken thigh. I avoid carbohydrates to maybe one dry diet cracker in the morning with cottage and s bit at lunch (at the most have half a potato or a spoonful of carrots or zucchini with the protein) and concentrate on the protein. I walk a lot on my job (I am a tour guide) sometimes for two whole hours.. I try to drink enough ( I usually mix water with sugarless ice tea powder, as flavoured water goes down easier for me ) I completely avoid sweets, pasta, bread, and eat very little fruit. Also I am not experiencing any cravings really, and because I am eating protein 3 times a day I think that I am getting enough protein and still the weight loss seems to stall. Or am I being unrealistic?? Or maybe I am doing something wrong? Last week. I was at 24 pounds less, this week it came back to 23., I am starting to feel frustrated with this up and down effect!! I would really appreciate some feedback from those of you who went through this before, and how you managed to overcome this! For the record, as this might be an important detail, I am 61. Thanks a lot for taking the time to read and answer. All the best to everyone. Sent from my D6603 using BariatricPal mobile app Sent from my D6603 using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. I'm just shy of being two years out. I do not have diarrhea or any other complications, but occasionally do experience nausea when I eat too fast, foods that are too heavy, or too many carbs. I did manage to get down to 145 pounds, but felt unhealthy. My sweet spot is 152 (150 was pushing it). I'm hoovering 156-58 right now and need to lose and stabilize again as I can see bad habits creeping back in. As for regain, that will depend on your habits; what you're eating, how much, and exercise. My husband was sleeved a month before me and was doing great the first 6 months. He was physically active riding his bike and watching what he ate. Then he accepted a new job and we moved out of state. He became less active and his new employer provided a buffet style lunch daily. This did him in. He had put back on 60+ pounds of the 100 pounds lost in 1.5 years. For a long time he blamed it primarily on what I cooked for dinner (the meal we eat together), as I haven;t changed all of our eating habits. But has instead come to realize that he eats too much socially at lunch because he has everything available to him. He doesn't bring his lunch like I do. Plus portion sizes are too big, as opposed to my dessert plate with tiny portions. He's also less physically active due to a longer commute among other reasons. Now he has always been able to consume everything and anything since starting on solids. We joked then that he had the sleeve of steel, where nothing bothered him. His doctor did comment at one point that his sleeve is larger than some of the others, meaning he removed less stomach; but I'm not sure if that's true. He is currently looking at a revision to his sleeve as his is considered to have been a failure.
  7. Well, I am home from the hospital after a successful band to sleeve revision. I had to be at the hospital by 6:45 am, and I was taken back to the pre-op area in about 30 minutes. After having a brief convo with my surgeon and anesthesiologist, I was put into my hospital smock and off I went to the ER. They moved me onto the table and that's pretty much all I remember. I woke up in the recovery room. I remember having a hard time keeping my eyelids open. Anyway, my blood pressure was really high, so I ended up staying in the recovery room for about three hours. My mother was going crazy, etc. My surgery itself was only an hour and a half. After my BP came down somewhat, they took me up to my hospital room/suite. It was really nice. Private, with a recliner and sofa that your loved ones could sleep on if they want to. I was fixed with a pain pump, and I slept a lot that first night. I was, however, up and ambulating down the halls within four hours of hitting the room. Overall my pain was well-controlled and I only felt pain when I had to get myself out of bed, etc. The worst part was not being able to have any type of Water. My throat was soooooo dry. The next morning I had a barium swallow to check for leaks and I was fine. That night I began running a low-grade fever (99.6), but my doctor nor my nurses were concerned about that. I was told it was due to the gunk in my lungs due to being put under. My temp was down later on my second day, and I do have a small low-grade fever now, but we'll see how it goes. My catheter was removed in the middle of Day 2 because I was getting up out of bed really well. This morning I was told I could go home. I have a stack of prescriptions and I"ve managed to get down one Protein shake. I still don't know how to drink those (how fast?), but I'm figuring it out. I'm a wee more sore today, but I'm sure it'll get better.
  8. Apparently dilation, once it occurs once, is of a much higher risk in replaced bands. If I had suffered a slip instead of a leak, I would have revised to a sleeve. But to get back to your question about not gaining: I gained with my leak but turned that around and starting losing again just before it was replaced. To do that I had to become super strict with cals and exercise. I never had to do that with the band (count calories) but without the band it was crucial. You only have to do it for 3 months, and that's so completely do-able. Good luck!

    Gerd

First, let me explain that I have no experience with bands, so whatever I say take with a grain of salt. This problem may not be GERD related. If it continues you might want to seek the professional help from your doctor. You indicated that your band is currently empty because of some erosion. There was one individual in our bariatric support group meeting that went from a band to a RNY revision because his band was eroding though his stomach. The band had to be removed. The erosion was very serious.

Hiatal hernia 4 years post op -help

I'm not sure if you're still looking for info as I see you posted about this in March. I can relate to your situation. I had the sleeve almost two years ago. I have PCOS, which didn't present symptoms until after a pregnancy. I was very fit prior to the pregnancy. After pregnancy, I just couldn't lose the weight regardless of my clean meal plan and 5 day per week exercise routine. I actually just started gaining without changing anything! Doctors did blood work and other tests, said it was PCOS and my best hope for losing was wls. I had a consult, was recommended to go with the sleeve. July 15, 2015 I was sleeved. I quickly lost down to 195 but it stalled by month 4!! I was working out, eating correctly, nada! It was very depressing. In June of 2016 I started slowly gaining, again without having changed anything. By January 2017, I was up to 216. I went back to my surgeon who sent me for tests and to the medical weight loss doctor. Tests revealed that I had become Insulin Resistant AND I had developed a Hiatal Hernia. I followed a Keto diet from January-April. I lost 16 pounds the first two weeks putting me back to 200 BUT my weight would not budge. I also had severe reflux during this entire time. So, my surgeon suggested that we fix the hernia and revise to a bypass because that is the only way to resolve the gerd. He also stated that with the malabsorption and my endocrine issues, he hopes I will lose another 40-50 pounds. He had to do a peer to peer with my insurance but got it approved!! I had my revision surgery June 14th and am doing very well...it was easier and less painful than the sleeve!! I'm almost 2 weeks out and down 12 pounds. The weight loss may be slower this time but the scale is moving! I'm praying it continues to move because I can't imagine going through this entire process and not getting to a healthy weight. I wish I had gone with the bypass originally but there's no way we could have known I would be one of the few that the sleeve wouldn't be successful for.

    Scared mom

Im not sure i can tell you which surgery to opt for but I will tell you that I was banded in 2007 and had a nice weight loss woth it BUT the band slipped about a year or so after it was in, no idea why. I had a revision surgery and new band put in with the risk it could slip again one day. about a year after that one slipped too. i decided to have my band removed and i didnt go do the sleeve at that time because i had enough of surgeries over the past 3 years. i hoped i could keep my weight off or at least the majority of it (75lbs). anyway, here i am 5 yrs later, all the weight is back and Im looking at the sleeve. I am high risk now because I was banded and that scares me. Please research these operations, and it might help to bring you mother to all your consults because this way she can hear what the doctors are explaining to you and she can ask questions as well. it will help her so much, I did that with my mom this time around. good luck

    Need advice

But I just had revision surgery from the sleeve surgery to bypass surgery 3 weeks ago and my surgeon says 40 g.of protein and 64 oz.of fluids a day . Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. You should be given one at the Hospital post surgery, and I do believe everyone gets one. I got one back in 2011 when I had the Band installed and I got another one in March when I was revised to the Bypass.

    Left side pain

Yes - I had a revision too and when I woke up from surgery I honestly thought the surgeon had ripped out my left ovary because it was SO painful. The pain lasted a good 2-3 weeks afterwards. It does go though. Hang in there.

    Lad band vs sleeve

I'm about three years out from my band surgery and I've had a baby in that time as well. I was one of the lucky ones that actually found my sweet spot with a bit of trial and error, however my band has slipped, it has a leak, and it looks as though it has come unbuckled. I go to the doctor on the 9th to set up a surgery date to have my busted band taken out. I was somewhat successful with my band but I was constantly uncomfortable with my port pain. It's like a Cyborg alien under the skin.... Haha. For me, I wouldn't do the band again and I'm looking into revising to the Sleeve. WLS is a very personal decision and one that you have to weigh out all the pros and cons and decide which one best fits your current health and lifestyle. Good luck to you.

    I was approved!!

My doctors office just called to tell me that my insurance approved my revision surgery to gastric bypass. I'm so happy and extremely nervous at the same time. My surgery is set for March 15th. I can't believe it's finally gonna happen. I've been waiting so long to be rid of this horrible band and feel relief pain wise. Anyone else having surgery in March?? Strictures post sleeve!!

Yes, I had the same problem. I was a band to sleeve revision as well and had a lot of problems with the band. I failed the emptying test twice post sleeve with that nasty liquid they made you drink. It turned out there was just a lot of inflammation from the lap band. I spent five days in the hospital and had to slowly heal. I couldn't tolerate liquids for three days. It will all work out. Just give it time.

    Vacation after surgery.

It would have been fine for me 6/7 weeks out but I think it has a lot to do with where you are fitness wise going into the surgery. I had a sleeve three years ago and then a bypass revision due to GERD four weeks ago, and for both surgeries I would have been able to do a walking heavy trip by that point. That being said, if you already don't walk a lot and the weeks following surgery are your first to really up your exercise, I can see why that would present a big challenge. I don't think pain will be an issue as much as fatigue. Take lots of breaks, drink lots of water, and go at a pace that works for you!
  21. So I didn’t have a good experience with communication with my surgical team. And I thought I was getting “resleeved” when I had my SIPs revision but my stomach wasn’t touched just the malabsorption piece was done. I’m kind of bummed because I really wanted a do-over and I’m not sure how successful just the malabsorption piece is. so back story I had sleeve done in 2014 day of surgery weight 265 I got down to 170 but it didn’t last long I started gaining weight and once covid hit I gained about 45lb in 2020 alone. I got up to 268 on the day of my revision (went all the way to 280 before I started liquid diet presurgery.) I’m about 2 weeks post and yes I’ve lost 11 lbs but I feel it has to do with the fact I’m still on liquid. What happens when I start eating solids again? Has anyone had experience with SIPs malabsorption piece only so many years post sleeve? Is it still successful? preop liquid diet 4/21 280lbs Revision surgery 4/26 268lbs Two weeks post 5/10 258 lbs

    Couldny get my sleeve today

Trust me it's for pure ood. Sorry you have to wait, but I've seen nothing but complications arrise from revision too soon. I had to wait 18 months.. Hopefully ou won't. You've got a smart doc
  23. I'm a revision from band to bypass, and I don't know what happened after surgery, (2 weeks ago today,) but I CANNOT stomach artificial sweeteners anymore. It hits my palate like poisonous metal. And what are all the Protein supplements made of? Artificial sweeteners... I am in this dangerous situation where I am seriously subsiding off Water and soy milk. I've been taking swallowed Vitamins instead of chewed, because I can't take the sweetners. Honestly, I can't. Would you continue to drink or chew something that tasted like bleach? I know taste buds change after surgery, but this is ridiculous. Argh!!! Sorry for my rant. Just one more week, then I can go to mushies... even then, how do I get the protein in before the solids aka meat stage? Sigh...
  24. It will depend on your surgeon's schedule. When I got my lap band in 2012 it was 2 months from the time insurance approved me. For my sleeve revision last month it was 2 weeks from the time insurance approved it. Total difference.

    Telling Co-Workers

I totally understand. I am a teacher, too. Luckily I was sleeved over the holiday so I used that time for much of my recovery. I think your letter looks good. I have already been questioned by many of my co-workers. They don't really understand the surgery, much less a revision I went through from the lapband. I think it is a good way to explain the situation without having to repeat yourself over and over again like me.
