  1. When i got banded, about 2-3 weeks in i was really sore around my biggest incision, there were days when i felt like i was gonna rip my stitches open if i stood up straight! I put bacatracin on them and around them to soften to skin and to subside to itchiness and it helped, dont be afraid to like put a glob of it over it if youre home just watchin tv. it passes!! i promise! good luck !
  2. Pilates reformer has given me the lean pipes & legs i have dreamed off. I do 2 classes a week for an hour.
  3. Hi folks! So I've been posting for a little while, but I kept forgetting to come over there and actually introduce myself. (How rude! lol) Now I'm doing some heavy-duty law school paper procrastination, which makes this the perfect time to post. I'm Rachel. I'm 30 years old. I live in the Washington, DC, area right now, though I've lived in a lot of other places. I'm originally from the Deep (Fried) South and come from a family of people with weight issues. I had my surgery on 12/28/11 with Dr. Kelly in TJ. I was really nervous about it at first, but the process went fairly smoothly. The company that handled the logistics, nutritionist, etc. wasn't that great (no big problems--just a lot of little ones), but Dr. Kelly was AWESOME. At the end of the day, that's all that mattered. I'm just starting to get over my "leak anxiety," which had me pretty freaked out for a couple of weeks, especially for a few days after an episode of overeating hummus. I was really uncomfortable, and I started having some weird sensations--of course my anxious brain dreamed up the worst scenarios, fueled by the worst things I had read about on the boards. Besides time, the thing that has been helping me get over the anxiety was buying a good digital thermometer and checking my temperature twice a day--that has helped convince me that I don't have a bad infection and am therefore not currently dying of leak-induced sepsis. (Lesson learned: Don't belittle or deny the anxiety--acknowledge it and figure out a way to address its needs while getting on with life.) I'm also starting to feel a lot stronger now that I can eat more. It's just been a few days ago that the swelling in my stomach went down substantially. Now instead of just a couple of teaspoons of mushy food, I can handle 1/4 to 1/2 cup of mushy and some solid foods. Life's a lot better when you don't feel like you could pass out at any moment! I don't yet feel up to exercising--I started back to work and school a week after surgery, and I've felt really wiped out most of the time since then--but I'm planning to start walking on a treadmill this weekend. So that's my story up to this point. Best of luck to all of you on your journeys!

    I am freaking out

There is a pad of fat around the outside of your stomach and it is inbetween your stomach and the band when it is fitted. The pad reduces in size as you loose weight but you don't really notice it until you get some restriction. You get restriction and then lose some weight and the fat pad shrinks a little and the band get looser, I did this a few times in a regular 4 week cycle and then the last fill I had in December made it hard to eat anything. It took 3 weeks to loosen this time and I've not had one since as I don't want to be as tight again. I can pretty much eat whatever I want now but I don't usually feel hungry until after midday and I can stop sooner than before I was banded. It's good you'll get to check with your doc tomorrow.
  5. So to start, I'm not freaking out but I'm really just curious. I lost 18lbs first week after surgery but now I'm kinda stuck. I assume this is no big deal but I'm looking for a little assurance from some veteran sleevers
  6. I am still preparing for surgery and I'm on metformin not for diabetes but because it's thought to help in weight loss from certain medications. I had stopped it for a while because the mail order pharmacy got it messed up but then it got straightened out and I started again last week. I'm not hungry now but when I look up the side effects for metformin it doesn't list lack of appetite. I notice I've been a lot less hungry the whole time I've been preparing for surgery (5 months) because I've been eating high protein low carb, but the last week it's been ridiculous. Anyone else have this issue? Might not be the metformin. Might be just anxious/frustration from not getting surgery scheduled, could be just a virus.

    Starting real food

There are a few on here who have had very different plans, that have allowed regular food much sooner than most. My surgeon's plan is pretty traditional. But I progressed much faster than it allowed for, because of work travel. I realized that the "wining and dining" I have to do for my job was not compatible with a puree diet, and keeping my surgery private. So I moved into real food in week three, and had no issues then or since. I don't recommend people go outside of their Dr's plan, but it worked for me.
  8. Unfortunately, I am just one week out today. The problem I am having is I have no desire to eat or drink. Which is causing me to feel light headed and drained. I have started making myself eat cottage cheese and more Water. At this point I have no idea what my limit is. No matter how I am feeling about food right now I make myself drink at least 2 Protein shakes. If the calorie intake is too much for you decrease it. Only eat as much as you can and making it the right choices of food. Hopefully I helped a little and good luck. Darnella

Disappointed Seems Surgery Will Be Delayed

Ty guys for the encouragement. Ladybug I keep telling myself that it must be when God wishes me to have the band but even though in my heart i know that I cant stop feeling disappointed. I sit all the time and think to myself I will be such and such lbs smaller by my birthday etc.. And 2 or 3 weeks is alot of time i could be loosing. I know it will happen cause i am not going to give up till it does but feel sad that its not going to be as fast as i wish.

    Helppp Me Plsss!!

You are only four days post-op. Don't regret it yet! You need to heal. The shoulder pain is the gas they use to fill the abdomen so they can see what they are doing inside. Gas-x will help it to dissipate, as will walking. Gas-x sounds odd, as the gas is in your shoulder, not your digestive tract...but it will help. It will also help the burp issue. A heating pad did wonders for me. It was my best friend for a week. Keep taking your pain meds, don't let the pain get ahead of you. When you get to level 3 of 10 take another dose. That is what it's for. You should start "turning the corner" and feeling better tomorrow or the next day. If you had a hiatal hernia repair with your banding, a bit longer.

    slow weight loss...fill?

I'm sorry you feel like you are stalling out right now. I would look at your diet and see exactly what you are eating & start a journal for it. food calories add up quicker than you realize. Make sure you are getting the right amount of Protein, eat your veggies and minimal carbs or none depending on your choice. Don't forget lots of Water but no drinks with your meals. Maybe mix up your exercise routine a bit, or throw one in if you haven't started that yet. They say the band will help with limiting your intake. I can't speak for that because with my 2 fills, i haven't felt full yet or found any foods i can't eat except a few raw veggies. However, i've lost 50lbs since being banded in late October so it has to be my diet control & exercise that's doing it for me right now & i'm loving it! It's hard on some days but i keep pushing through. I'm also on my scale every morning, same clothes, same time. I just can't seem to stay off it...LOL I know it will vary day by day, but it keeps me in check. Good luck, i'm sure you'll get on track in not time!
  12. Congratulations!!! I am almost 4 weeks post op and I feel out of this world. The best advice I can give is start practicing your life style now, start weighing your foods, practice eating very slow and drinking often and KEEP POSITIVE. You will do awesome!
  13. Today marks three weeks since my sleeve surgery. I have been on "Full Liquids" for two weeks and move to mushies on Sunday. I have to say I have not been getting my Protein in and the past two days I've missed my Water mark as well. I've felt horrible especially at night for some reason. I catch the chills, and am just dead beat tired. I've really focused on my Fluids today and I think I'm close to 64 oz's. I haven't been hungry at all either which kind of worries me.....I hope moving to mushies is a smooth transition. Otherwise, the weight is still coming off. My Stats are: Starting Weight Pre-op Diet - 267 Surgery Date - 249 Today - 221 Stay strong and positive fellow sleevers!!!

    soooo frustrated!!!!

Yeah, I freaked out the first three months. I had really high expectations. I see my aunt who has been out 2+ years and she still loses a little here and there. I just take a moment to realize I eat way better than I ever did. I eat way less than I ever did. and I exercise way more than I ever did. I feel better than I have in years and look better too. I will be satisfied that this is where I am at this moment. And for the first time I will look forward to the future. chin up!

    Is Blending Cheating?

L.L., It definitely depends upon what stage you are in at this moment. IF you are past any of the stages that actually require mushy or liquefied foods, then yes you are circumventing the purpose of your band. Your doctor does not want you to simply blend foods and drink your meals. The idea is to slowly work yourself up to the point you can safely and comfortably eat three small meals per day. While many believe it is acceptable to drink your Protein, my doctor stresses that I eat my Proteins and not rely on the liquid versions. I hope this answers your question, but please let us know if you need more clarification. Dennis
  17. I know how much myself and everyone else love comarison pictures. I hit 50 pound loss a couple days ago (HW 230 CW 180) so I thought I would take update pics. Also have bare belly and arm pics for those that are curious about loose skin along our journeys. So far with just 50 my skin is good, arms are flabby but still alot of fat hangin in there and I've always had very large arms, also skin on abd is good so far, I can tell a little more give in skin on upper abd but I'm hoping over more time that it will keep tightening and I can avoid the plastics in the future. 30 pounds til goal now Hope these help those that are very newbies and those considering surgery

    Bear In My Stomach?

I'm for weeks out and my stomach still growls at me everyday! I guess that's its way of letting me know to send down some food since I don't have the "Hunger Hormone" in there anymore. Rught after I eat something, it stops for about 3 hours, then it starts up again and I also have a slight hiccup as well, but I can live with all of this because I'm feeling and looking better every day!
  19. My pre-op weight was 258 I now at 241, down 17lbs in 3 weeks. I'm able to tolerate soft foods, how's everyone else doing?

Here is my Grandson (14yr old)

The weight loss is stalled right now. I haven't and WON'T weigh myself till this coming Monday. I feel like I have lost but don't wanna jinx it in case I am way wrong. LOL!!! I am just looking forward to some time to just chill. My grandson played in my art studio today and he produced two really cool paintings. If I can get a pic of them before he leaves I will do that and post them. Paula, I am pretty proud of both of these guys. They actually wanted me to ride stuff with them and when I tried to bow out and let them just do it alone they both pulled my arms and said "OH NO YOU ARE COMING TOO!" Isn't that sweet?

My Plan and looking for input.

Don't worry about the post-op diet at all. I know you can't truly understand this, but believe us when we tell you, you're simply not hungry for a while after surgery. The problem will be getting in enough fluids, not how to stay on fluids. As for the pre-op diet, it's just 2 weeks of your life. Bribe yourself through it if you have to. Plan out what you get (like a present) every day you stay on the horrible pre-op diet. Write yourself notes about how the ONLY thing you're in control of, in terms of the safety of your surgery, is the pre-op diet. It's the only thing you can control, so you can do it. It's just 14 days. You WILL eat again. There's no reason to feel you have to during those 14 days. As for your husband, you will still be his eating buddy. Just, rather than you both ordering an appetizer and an entree and sharing, he'll order both, you'll order an appetizer, and you'll have a bite or two of all 3 and he'll have the rest. You'll still enjoy the food and the variety just as much, if not more. Since, for your husband, it's not about quantity eating, or commiserating in being heavy, I don't see this as a problem. It's when we "betray" our eating buddies -- the ones we overeat with who are also heavy -- by getting thinner and wanting to eat healthier, that the social issues arise in full force. I think you'll do great and your husband will be your biggest supporter. Good luck!
