    protein shakes

I've tried.... 3 different brands from Walgreens Bariatric Advantage from online Pure Protein from Trader Joes And.... I've finally found my love. Blue Bonnet Protein!!! It mixes well, all natural, not gritty, doesn't separate when it sits, no artificial additives. Even mixes well with my yogurt. It comes in vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, blueberries and original. Super high in protein too. It's a little pricy. I pay about $50 every 2 weeks which consist of one container of vanilla with 14 servings for $33 and 8 single packages.. additional flavors @ $2.65 each. Its so yummie is rather drink my shake then eat actual food. ~Leticia **HW: 259**PreOp: 216**SURG: 3/21/13 **Discharged @: 221** 3 mons post op. CW: 164.0 lbs. --- Only 14 lbs to my goal ---

    Problem Drinking Protein Drinks

Hi, I'm not sleeved yet but have read on here that a lot of folks' tastes change after surgery. Have you considered buying an unflavored protein mix? I guess you can mix it with broth, juice, puddings, yogurt and other stuffs. I plan on buying some Unjury brand to use after my surgery. You can buy single serve packets to try before spending the big bucks on the canister. They have a website if you're interested. I'm sure there are other brands as well that may be cheaper. Good Luck!

    Java!

Today's Day 7. I'm allowed to start full liquids, hot cereal, yogurt & cream soups today. And skim milk. I can have a cup of coffee. I actually sang Lionel Richie's 'Hello' to my coffee pot a few minutes ago. I am way too excited over coffee. I had some cream of wheat (for the first time in my life, actually) earlier and I feel fine. I don't feel nauseous or anything. The port site is a little bit sore. I sneezed this morning and had an "OMGWTF" pain moment. I think that's normal. My main incision left some blood spots on my shirt that I slept in where the first steri strip fell off (I think it came off too early). It's not a ton of blood, so I'm going to hold off on calling. I have an appointment on Wednesday, anyways. Yesterday (Day 6) was pretty good, aside from the aforementioned port pain. I actually went to the grocery store and managed to buy what I needed, yet not make it weigh more than a gallon of milk (the most weight I can lift). I had a friend come and move my TV BACK to my living room from my bedroom -- I moved the rest of the stuff (cable box, dvd player), piece by piece so it wasn't too heavy. The ONE friend (who is more an acquaintance I go to happy hour with than anything) out of the six that I asked. Five people who had told me 'if you need anything after your surgery, call!'. Well I texted and called. Nobody answered. See who comes and hangs out with you after YOUR surgery next time. Or who is there when you need a ride to the store or to the laundromat. I'm doing everything my damn self; figure out a way to do things without me constantly driving you around. I'm sorry, but I'm currently super disgusted with the people who are supposed to be my friends. End angry rant. My laundry basket also currently weighs less than a gallon of milk, so I think I'm going to do that at some point this week, too. Maybe on Wednesday after my appointment. I figure I'll already be out, I can get an oil change and get some laundry done. I'm basically "resting" (sitting around) at each of those places except when the laundry needs moved from the washer to the dryer and folded, so it's not like it's "heavy housework". Also, since when is vacuuming "heavy housework"? You're walking around, pushing something that pretty much moves on its own. And now that I've rambled on for 30 minutes, I'm going to drink my coffee.
  6. I try to go to the gym for an hour 5 - 6 days a week. (We have a new wellness center that opened just this week - is is simply AMAZING. Left me speachless when I walked in.) Anyway I vary between and hour of Zumba or Body Pump and if I can't make it to the gym for one of these class' I usually do 45 minutes on the elliptical machine. The first time I got on the elliptical I went 6 minutes and just about died. I can do 45 easy now. Amazing what exercise will do for you. Lots of my aches and pains have gone away and when I have those stints where I don't exercise (sshhhhh) I usually don't lose. As far as food, I'm a calorie counter. Altho, I do only eat about 1 cup of food at a meal. Typical Breakfast : Greek Yogurt Lunch: salad with leftover protien from night before or I like chicen salad on a piece of toast or with crackers. Once in a while Soup or chili or a lean cusine. Supper: 3 oz of protien, I don't have problems eating any meat so I eat everything from fish, pork, steak, hamburger, chicken. I always have about 1/2 cup of veggies with my protien and once in a while I will throw in a potato but not always. I also like just my protiens with a really yummy salad loaded with fresh veggies. mmmmmm When I snack I try to eat a yogurt or cheese sometimes a 100 calorie pack of Cookies or a snackwell protien bar. I also enjoy an occassional 45 cal fudgesicle or a weight watchers dark chocolate raspberry ice cream bar. I only buy them occassionally because when they are in the house i eat one every night till they are gone. But, like I said, I am a calorie counter. If it fits in my 1200 limit, it's ok. Best of Luck!
  7. I would also like to know. I've tried solid foods now and then, only to throw it up and feel sick for hours afterwards. I mainly have 2 protein shakes a day, in one if them I pour a huge capful of the liquid vitamins- just to get them down. I can eat Greek yogurt, refried beans, cottage cheese &eggs make me gag.
  8. I am 4 weeks post op. I have somewhat gotten a little appetite. I have been eating a very small about of mushies like grits, mashed potatoes, and yogurt. I have also been drinking my protein shakes and eating well done squash and zucchini ( that I have really been enjoying). Question is what is this feeling that I am experiencing? Its not hunger but it like a gurgling bubbly feeling in between meals.

    Soft food ideas?

I went the pre-packaged way .. Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, taco bell pintos and cheese.
  10. Stacey, Sounds like you are keeping a good plan going. I am 8 weeks post op. I measure nothing because I do not get hungry. Every doctor is different. Ours said "Eat Healthy". No guidelines after 4 weeks. So we are content to have a shake or 1 egg for Breakfast, a yogurt for lunch, and maybe some refried Beans for dinner with a wedge of Laughing Cow cheese melted on it. Makes my life simple. Sometimes I felt like I was not even sleeved, because I could drink so much without a problem. I personally feel the more I eat the more I will want to eat, so while I don't have these nagging stomach/hunger pains like I used to I am taking it easy. I still grab a SF popsicle when I feel it is head hunger. I had a bad experience with a small piece of chicken, so I did find out the hard way I was sleeved. We are all so different. Your plan sounds good and is working for you! Best of luck!

    pureed ground beef

I am the same way. I don't care for pureed foods. I just started this stage on Monday and I usually stick with foods such as cottage cheese, greek yogurt, oatmeal, and peanut butter. However, for dinner, I have been eating grilled chicken and veggies, but I don't blend them. I just take tiny bites and I chew, chew, chew until it's like applesauce in my mouth before I swallow. This has worked fine for me. I have had no problems so far. My dietician also told me I could have tuna, egg salad, and other foods like that. So, just because it's a puree diet, doesn't mean everything has to be blended. I am looking forward to Nov. 7th when I start my soft foods diet and get to incorporate more variety of foods.

1st trip to Costco ... what should i get?

I have learned not to buy a lot. Taste changes and you are unable to eat a lot, so I found I was wasting money I do keep a good supply of: Shrimp, tilapia fish, Protein shakes and Protein Bars, dannon light and fit yogurts, cheese sticks, cottage cheese and fruit cocktail light (no syrup) flavor packets for Water. I also stocked up canned soup like progress heart healthy, of light Soups with 80-100 calorie per serving. Always remember to focus on the items that are the highest in protein. I hope this helps. It was a big trial and error for me. I'm almost 3 months out. I didn't gain this weight overnight, ad will not lose overnight You will have some good weeks of weight loss, some bad weeks and some weeks with no loss. Just keep going.

    Queston?

Yep, even after all this time (more than 18 months), I still am more careful of what I eat at breakfast. My tummy is still a little grumpy, so not to much grease or anything heavy. I have a couple of soy lattes, some greek yogurt, and a piece of toast or 1/2 cup of oatmeal. No, not all at once :-) I have coffee first, then breakfast about an hour later, then another coffee around 10 a.m. Lynda

    4 Days

Agree with Igotheband, do not eat grilled cheese frankly you should not be eating anything solid. In the beginning they want you to eat slider food. Protein shakes, with at least 15 gms of protein and they should be low in sugars. Greek yogurt is good source of protein, mashed potatos, cream soups. You can buy unflavored protein and add it to almost anything. If you are hungry than take some liguids or something every couple of hours. It takes several days, sometimes up to a week for the swelling to go down after the band is placed. You will not fill any restriction in the beginning and you may not start really losing any weight until after your first fill. Some fill restriction from the beginning. If you go to main Lapband web site there is a diet to follow and you need to stick to it as closely as you can, but really your physicians office should have provided you with all of that. Good luck to you and do a little internet searching on what to eat in the early days. This all takes time and yes in the beginning you may be hungry, I am sorry but the band can not change all of that as quickly as we would like sometimes. Banded since OCTOBER 2010 and down 94 lbs.

    Are you hungry?

@@lucy0911 - People are usually surprised to find that Protein is in most things, particularly dark, green leafy veg and whole grains. I was already keeping a food journal prior to WLS. I averaged about 50 gms of protein a day. When I met with the nutritionist we discussed how to increase that to 60+gms a day. The key for me was finding a Protein powder I could live with. I've finally found that I prefer Isopure unflavored. I just add it to my morning Breakfast smoothie. I use a lot of FAGE 0% greek yogurt. I also eat a lot of bean, grains like farro & quinoa, cheese and the occasional egg. Occasionally I use meat substitutes like Beyond Meat, Gardein, tofu, tempeh and seitain. My protein average for the past week is 72gm. Here's a helpful chart on protein sources.

    New Yogurt that is WONDERFUL!!

As far a carbs go - there are 19 g of carbs of which 14g are sugar but it is from the natural milk sugar - straight from my nut: "Keep in mind that is no such thing as sugar free dairy or fruit and the sugar content may go up to 15 grams of sugar per serving. " So its natural sugar opposed to refined sugar and according to the yoplait package "The only yogurt clinically shown to help you burn more fat than just cutting calories alone" Sounds good to me and the taste makes it all worth it!
  22. I was just banded 01/15 and just started on solids. Since I haven't had any fills yet, I have very little restriction. but since my stomach seemed to shrink a lot from the 3 week liquid diet I was on, I am able to keep to a low calorie diet through sheer self control! But I still log everything into Free Calorie Counter, Diet & Exercise Journal | MyFitnessPal.com. Here's my diet for the past week: Breakfast: Whole Wheat English muffin with low fat Peanut Butter and sliced banana on top- THIS IS SOOO YUMMY! (300 cal) Lunch: Homemade Turkey Chili- I made a ton in the crockpot and portioned it out and froze it- (300 cal) Dinner: Turkey Burger with avacado and green salad with spray dressing- (485 cal) My Snacks are yogurts, cottage cheese, string cheese, or raw veggies. I try to stay around 1200 calories daily.

    Pain

I never hear anyone talk about the pain you feel when you eat solid food. I'm wondering I am the only one experiencing this? The pain is excruciating, it'll take me to my knees! I'm unable to function, barely able to handle it at all and it will last for 2-4 hours. When I was able to eat solid food, the first thing I tried was soup with veggies so soft they melted in your mouth. I had two teaspoonfuls and before I took my third I felt this really hard knot forming from my stomach to my throat, my back teeth started ringing and shooting pain. It hurt so bad I could barely get to my bed to lay down! It lasted 3 hrs. I figured I ate to fast. The next day, I tried again, the same thing I figured I ate to much this time. It took me awhile to try again, it really is something I am afraid of now! The next time was on the day of my 1st check up, 10 days later. I had a scrabbled egg, chewed the crap out of, took 20 minutes to eat it and didn't actually eat the whole egg! It didn't hurt but it was alittle uncomfortable. My doc app was fine! So from the time I ate it to the time my doctors appointment was over was 3 hrs. I got into my truck and took a sip of water (first sip since before breakfast) and almost instantly I was doubled over in pain. I sat in the parking lot for about 40 minutes before I could drive, I still wasn't ok but better. When I got home I went right to bed. An hour later I tried water again and same thing, pain. At this point it was 5 hr since breakfast, and by now I'm behind on my water consumption. It was a total of 8 hrs of pain. Thankfully it goes away and I'm able to drink water again! Doctor told me to goto liquids only again for a while. It's about 7 weeks since surgery and I can't do solid food unless it puréed. I've hurt myself a couple more times trying to salmon and spaghetti O's. Now I'm just to afraid to eat. I stick with the protein drinks, yogurt and broth. If it doesn't have protein in it then I don't bother. My family and friend keep telling me that I have to eat at some point but I'm to afraid and plus no appetite. Doctor says that with the supplement and protein drink I can live fine. Does anyone else experience this pain?
  24. This is what I packed for Breakfast and lunch today: Protein shake with 6 oz milk, vanilla protein and SF orange flavoring 2 oz ahi tuna steak 2 oz cottage cheese 5 slices of cucumber 1 oz Greek yogurt with blue cheese stirred in 5 high protein crackers I got at Cost Plus The tuna is great protein. I cooked it fresh, but you can get it out of a can if you can't find ahi. The cottage cheese is 2% fat from the store Peel and slice a cumcumber Mix 3 oz. Fage Greek yogurt with 2 oz of blue or gorganzola cheese. Take only 1 oz as a dip for the cucumber I would skip the crackers if you can't find low carb, high protein ones. Tomorrow I am having a Protein Shake, shrimp with cocktail sauce, cottage cheese, low carb crackers, cucumber and greek yogurt dip. Next day: Protein shake, 2 oz pan seared filet mignon, greek yogurt dip, cucumber and dip Day after: Protein shake, Slice of turkey wrapped around a slice of avocado, 1 oz cheese, roasted chick peas. It's not that you are going too fast. Most of us would not be eating fast food and if so, the bun would not be eaten. I would definetely suggest nutrition classes and cooking classes. To me it's second nature. I forget that some folks just don't cook. Like the ahi. I went to Trader Joes and got sashimi grade ahi. I marinated in in soy, lemon juice, garlic and cayenne pepper. I heated up a cast Iron pan with a tiny bit of oil. I like mine really rare so I seared each side for 1 minute. Barbecuing is a GREAT way to make healthy food. Get a lean piece of skinless chicken, pork or lean beed like fillet, london broil or even sirloin. Marinate the meat in your favorite herbs and spices. Grill. You can grill vegetables as well. It looks like yor weight loss is fine, but I guaratee you will feel better eating good food that you make.
  25. Pureed meats sound really gross to me! Yuck! I just sipped on my protein drink (Premier). Ate low fat light yogurt, sf jello, sf pudding. It will work out! CONGRATS!
