When Did You Start Soft / Pureed Foods?
Jb1176 replied to ssourgirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Puréed foods for 11 days after day 3 clear iquid post surgery. Am now on day 4 /11 of purée and am tolerating fish, chicken salad, hamburger with melted cheese, cottage cheese, plain Greek yogurt, and scrambled eggs made with a little water to fluff them up.. Will try chicken soup tomorrow - just avoid the noodles. Can just today get down 4 oz of puréed protein. After 11 days I transition to soft foods for two weeks, then regular diet. -
The discovery of antibiotics has been a major factor with our increased life expectancy. You have probably had an occasion to be on antibiotic therapy. Over the last couple of decades, misuse of antibiotics has led to bacteria that have become resistant to many of the current antibiotics. It is important to take your antibiotics as prescribed, not just until you feel better. Getting the best result from your antibiotic helps you get rid of a bacterial infection. There are a couple of nutrition related areas to be aware of regarding antibiotics. Some antibiotics will interact with certain minerals. These minerals include magnesium and aluminum, which are found in anti-acid medications. Other minerals that can interact with some antibiotics include iron, calcium and zinc. Check your supplements to see if these are included. Some ready to drink protein shakes can be fortified with these minerals. Calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and aluminum will interact with some antibiotics and make them less effective. You will need to take these minerals several hours apart from the antibiotic. Something else to be aware of is that antibiotics kill bacteria, both the good ones and the bad ones. Therefore, do not take an antibiotic at the same time you take something with probiotics in it like yogurt, kefir or a probiotic supplement. Your antibiotic can kill some of the good bacteria and not have enough left to kill all the bad bacteria. Take the time to read the insert that comes with your antibiotic. If you need further help, consult with your medical team, including your pharmacist. Taking your antibiotic correctly will allow your body to have the best chance to get rid of a bacterial infection.

I completely understand where you are coming from. I am doing all the right stuff - I am doing at least an hour in the gym 4-6 days a week. When I run / walk on the treadmill I do about 3.5-3.75 miles - The cal counter says 425-450. When I do the elliptical I burn about 700 cal. I am keeping my calories around 900-1000. I am eating mainly tuna and baked fish with green beans and greek yogurt. I do a sugar free jello pudding cup and a popsicle every day. I drink a ton crystal light (1/2 strength) ice tea and 2 cups of decaf coffee. I was banded Feb 3rd and I have lost about 5 lbs. I get your frustration. I finally quit getting on the scale because I was having hissy fit every morning after I got off the scale. I am going to keep doing what I am doing because I figure my body has to eventually let it go. I am really relieved to read that I am not the only one that wants to throw themselves on the ground like a f'n 3 year old when I don't see that scale move! I just added some weight training to my routine so I am hoping that will maybe help. I will let you know if it does. I have only been doing it for a week but I do notice my clothes finally are feeling a little looser. I also wanted to tell you that all of your blogs have been very entertaining. They totally crack me up. You have a way of venting that doesn't come across as whiny at all. My favorite was the "calories in vs calories out is bullshit". I could have written those exact words myself just not as well or entertaining as you did. Keep it up and stay strong!

I lived a big part of my life as if every day was a food funeral, so I think by the time I actually booked the surgery it was just relief, so I didn't do one. HOWEVER. My surgery was originally supposed to be at the end of October and on the day of surgery my flight was cancelled and I couldn't get to Mexico due to Sandy. On THAT day, after starving myself on yogurt for 3 days combined with the HUGE disappointment of not having surgery that day, I did say screw it and ate some bad stuff. And it wasn't even GOOD bad stuff, it was DENNY's people. UGH. It was the closest thing to the airport and I was huuungry.

Going back to the yogurt is the dietitians idea. The dr doesn't want me eating anything that will "slide through" my stomach. He wants stuff that will sit in there. Sent from my SM-G930T using BariatricPal mobile app

Eating and drinking
RoRoKitty replied to lorraine#11's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would suggest to try soft and puréed food... introduce fish, seafood, chicken, cottage cheese, yogurts etc slowly into your daily life... as soon as you see you can tolerate these, you can add one new thing every once in a while in minimum quantities. Every body is unique and there is no 100% right diet and wrong diet. Just focus on your proteins first and then you can worry about your greens, carbs are coming last. -
I Have A Hemorrhoid!
Dooter replied to missmachine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
An oz. of prevention- once this feels better-- start throwing a 1/4 cup of Fiber One in your yogurt every day. I can't live without that stuff. It's just enough to....well...... stay happy. -
Hey, more options for me! Aspartame tends to trigger my migraines, and I've had the same problem from Splenda. I'd love to find more monk fruit sweeteners, personally, but it looks like we're headed in the right direction. I also use cinnamon to sweeten some things, like plain yogurt. My palate has been adjusting after surgery, and I find lots of sweet things, especially artificial sweet to be cloying.

8 days after surgery and diarrhea
JewlzInFL replied to Bobcats's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 9 days post-op and was feeling great until last night, and had a couple "normal" BMs. Last night I took a turn and also have diarrhea now and feel pretty dehydrated and don't want to drink much. I haven't had anything thicker than thin yogurt, so people have been saying "liquid in - liquid out", so I'm assuming we're still adjusting. Try some Gass X for bloating! It helps me -
My doctor told me to try milk of magnesia and it helped within 1 or 2 hrs since I have been regular. Of course fluids and activity helps. But i think yogurt also helps. Hope u feel better. Ask your doctor for what to take.

Several powder and liquid forms of water flavors now use stevia. These are easily available in grocery stores. Stevia can be plain stevia or listed as Truvia, which is a combination of stevia and erythritol. Erythritol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol and will have a few calories. For powder forms of water flavors, look for the Crystal Light Pure and the Great Value version from Walmart. Crystal Light Pure does have four grams sugar per half-packet, so some patients may not be able to tolerate this product. In the liquid drop form, brands to look for include MIO with stevia, Great Value version, Skinny Girl, Sweet Leaf and Stur. Add enough of these products to taste right for you. Too much can get super sweet in a hurry. For protein powders, look for Jay Robb and Syntrax Nectar Naturals. Even yogurts are joining in the natural sweeteners trend. Look for the Greek style yogurts Chiobani Simply 100 (has stevia and monk fruit) and Oikos Triple Zero (has stevia, look for black label). Experiment with different stevia or monk fruit sweetened products to see what you like.

Started weight lifting and I'm now starving every 2/2.5 hours
GotProlactinoma replied to whitmac's topic in Fitness & Exercise
You need protein, clearly. I have the same hunger every 2-2.5 hrs. It’s real hunger, your body needs protein. I always give it fat with the protein. I take a kid’s lunchbox with me on the go, with a freezer pack in it and tiny metal containers with my unflavored, unsweetened whey protein powder mixed with full fat plain no flavor Greek yogurt. It doesn’t actually taste good so it is eaten for protein and satisfying the hunger ONLY. Breakfast and dinner at home I will choose tasty food. But mid days I only wish to shut up the hunger and keep on keeping on. i am losing slower than you, only 53 lbs in 9 mos. but that is ok. And I don’t walk nearly as much as you though I love weights too. -
How much are you able to eat?
Guest replied to Carol94303's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm starting my 8th week and I can eat 3-4 oz protein. Or I can eat 6 oz Okios yogurt or about 5 oz of cottage cheese. -
Tried Premier Protein Peaches and Cream and Cookies and Cream
Frustr8 replied to Creekimp13's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Well,i like Peaches &Cream P.P. , if the Enriched Protein Drink Fairy dropped a case off at my front, door I would do an Elvis "Thank,You Very Much ". Now,my second favorist, yummy flavorite one. Muscle Milk Blueberry Greek Yogurt Drink. Last time I mentioned MMBGY, the Dietary Mafia reminded me,i added calories, decreased protein count, and how dare I allow something less than 30 gram protein cross my,lips! Ok I am a fruitaholic , bland vanilla doesn't turn my crank ! In my badder younger days I characterised vanilla milkshakes as thick, white and tasteless like one of my daighters,ex-boyfriends, rather have a,sugar maple stump, at least every spring during sap run they turned sweet. He was just DENSE. My third favorite breaks my,vanilla hating rule. Svelte French Vanilla. Only 11 grams, Dietary Mafia would say that's merely a recreational drink, something not to taken seriously, true, but,it is soybased, sits well on my tummy, and my white trash soul enjoys,it. it actually is refreshing icy cold. One I was not thrilled with was Equate in Vanilla. I got seduced into it Because still 30 grams at $2 cheaper. No no no, it has that vile evaporated milk taste I have always loathed. Back, when I worked at Wally World I bought their imitation Ensure/Slimfast in Strawberry or Vanilla because chocolate is a no-go because of my allergy. Drimk, one of those cans for lunch and be sick all afternoon from that vile evaporator- baby vitamin, laced taste. Yucky-poo! Honorable mention certainly to caramel P P, do not stubsitute Equate here they are not equivalent, either straight or snuck into coffee, be it high test or decaf. Protein 20,water, ok but I would still, rather drink,Propel and make up protein with tofu. Strawberry and Cream P P , nutri. at OSU gave me some, well better than dying of thirst, but I prefer something more strawberry intensive, haven't tried Bananas and Cream , somebody must be drinking,it b ut,i haven't yet. What I like is unsweetened pineapple juice, banana and frozen unsweetened strawberries whipped up into a icy smoothie. Yes I should drop,in spinach or kale for nutrition but it would ruin thevtadt and pretty color. Anybody have any idea what to do with 2 2.5 pound bags of frozen blueberries.?? Back in the old days I would make deep dish blueberry pies and go to Dietary Hades with all the other sinners!🍝 -
Countdown to last adjustment-UNFILL
VegasGrace replied to VegasGrace's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Just though I'd update: I got the unfill .3ccs....and what a difference it made! I can drink w/o a straw! Before when I drank...too fast evidently...I'd spew. So I went to straws. Guys, tonight was chicken enchiladas - made myself w/ chicken breasts, salsa, cheese, onion, flour bread and POOF! lunch was hot dog burgers....but I slimed it up. Breakfast was a bananna split: banana, strawberry yogurt, grapenuts, fresh blueberries, strawberries, etc. I've learned a new way to eat without relying on McDonalds! food is better now than before I was banded. -
13 weeks sleeve post op. A little hair loss just began but that's ok. I am just not hungry. The thought of eating a meal makes me sick to my stomach (literally.) I'm losing 1-2 pounds a week. Sleeping well. Feel fine. But living on greek yogurt and protein shakes and applesauce with added collagen. Oh- some fruit and nuts too. Is this ok or am I developing some eating disorder? Anyone else in the same boat? Sent from my SM-G977U using BariatricPal mobile app

Thank you all. My Dr. has a very limitied number of shakes and I actually like the one that was given. So I got lactaid. I can mix the shake with water, but the dairy content was still killer, plus we had guidance to eat yogurt so that sent me over the top. I only had one shake yesterday and LOTS of clear liquids. I got the acidophilus and lactaid going. Felling much more norma today and no pain. Your thoughts were much appreciated.

sleevedjune, thanks for your response and actually answering my question. Your response is super helpful because i think i will more than likely eat similarly to you when i can eat again. I have already had the surgery and everyday i eat yogurt, beans and soup so this doesnt really apply to me right now too much. i have put cheese and sour cream in my beans though (less than a tsp of sour cream less than an oz of cheese) and i was wondering if i might be halting weight loss in some way as a result. i think i have done great with weight loss (i am down 22 lbs in 13 days) but want to be very conscious about food choices and planning for the future. i have done south beach a million times and so i am tempted to say low carbs work for me, but i can be honest about the fact that i am usually on or off. if i am dieting, i am eating nothing of plan. if i am not dieting, i am eating a whole pizza. thats the way it has always been. i have never ever really done moderation, its always been all or nothing so i am very curious about the effectiveness of eating things in moderation. i can tell you i love my little refried bean meal and i have never eaten the whole thing, i have never even eaten all the sour cream, i get full or tired of eating before that is an option. i am also not a big sweet eater i am fat from food much more than dessert, large volumes of food so i was mostly trying to determine if i have damned myself with real cheese and sour cream. also one day, when i can eat food again, i plan to cook and i am wondering how necessary it is to change meal ingredients i would usually use as opposed to the portions of the meal i consume.

Eating and exercise habits
SleevedJune62013 replied to angry's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved 6/6/13 & I'm down 40 lbs today from surgery weight (230). I may not be far enough out for what you're trying to gather but I figured I'd share. I eat cheese. I LOVE cheese & can't live without it. I eat Beans because they're a good source of Protein & I like them more than eggs. I put sour cream on my lettuce wrapped taco meat because its a good source of Calcium & we're only talking a tablespoon. I eat full on cream Soups & the real deal salad dressings & mayo but I DO NOT eat potato chips, Pasta, rice or crackers. I've had a couple pieces of low carb wheat bread, a tortilla to hold my wrap together (I tore off as much tortilla as I could get away with) a couple of times & protein enriched crisps. I've had no sugar added frozen yogurts, fudgsicles & ice creams. Never the real full on blue bell or Ben & Jerry's. I've also had 3 sugar free Cookies. I average 80 carbs a day. I go over & under often but the reason I stay away from full sugar cookies, cakes, Icecreams & stuff like potato chips & crackers & bread is because they are triggers for me. I used to eat a whole loaf of French bread smeared in butter. YUM-O! Now I aim for 800 calories, 80 grams of protein & try to exercise at least 5 days a week. I do a minimum of 30 mins cardio & 15 mins of strength training. My husband has told me my legs are getting very tone. I want to include exercise to tone my body. I have a friend that lost 130 lbs at her 1 year mark but she never exercised & has LOTS of loose skin. I lost 25 lbs my first month & only 7.5lbs each additional month after that. I imagine I will lose approx 7 lbs a month which will land me at a healthy BMI weight of approx 130 for 5'3.5" & hopefully I'll be nice & tone too. Fingers crossed. Good luck! -

If you must eat at a fast food place, these are some of my "go too" items: McD: order just the egg from the mcmuffin, yes you can do that. Or order the sandwich and throw away the muffin. Filet of fish with no bun, or throw it away. BK: jr bacon burger, no bun Wendy's: small chili with cheese tacobell: pinto's w/cheese & a side of meat. chick fil a: yogurt parfait, side egg, chicken sandwich and throw away the bun, kid 4 piece nugget w/fruit (not fries) Cane's: i order one strip with one sauce. Chili's: my go-to is the soup that's just a few i can think of -
Constipation is a common problem after weight loss surgery. My doctor talked about this yesterday. Was told that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Prevention: Drink 60+ ounce of fluids per day! Fiber supplements...fiber gummies, Benefiber, Wheat germ 4oz of apple or prune juice with 4oz of water. Probiotics like Greek Activia Yogurt 1 Tablespoon Allbran, 1 Tablespoon applesauce, 1 Tablespoon prune juice. Combine ingredients and refrigerate over night. Take 3 Tablespoons and repeat daily as necessary. Rescue: Milk of Magnesia Miralax Enema Suppositories Stool softener (Colace) All of this is from my doctor...you should check with YOUR OWN doctor before trying these....just putting them out there as things you could ask about. Good luck, and feel better:)

Hi Melanie, You are doing great and you need to stop beating yourself up. THe beauty of the band is that it is adjustable and there is no window of opportunity to lose the weight. You need a band adjustment. The general rule is that if you are not losing for 3 weeks or more at least 1-2 pounds a week and you are following the bandster rules you should get a fill. If you are not working the band and eating high caloric soft food instead of solid Protein, you need to work on this . Let me make some suggestions though because I know what it is like to have a busy life that involves full time work and kids. I found that when I sat down and ate dinner with my family that I would get stressed out and I had trouble with meat cause I couldnt concentrate on chewing because of the distractions of a 3 year old and 9 year old demanding my attention. So now, when I make dinner, I let my kids eat first, tend to their needs and then attempt to eat my food last. This way I can take my time, concentrate and chew my food thoroughly. Also, it sounds like you are eating lunch on the run. This is not a good thing because you will gravitate to softer foods that have lots of calories when you are in a hurry. Prepare your lunches in advance. Bring things that you can nibble on during the day like hard boiled eggs, tuna, pieces of chicken breast, string cheese, yogurt, ham or turkey rollups, turkey chili from the can. Regarding exercise, it is imperative that you find 1/2 hour a day to do something to improve your cardio health and develop muscle. Walk around the neighborhood, take a jazzercise class a couple times a week or invest in an elliptical trainer. The exercise should become a habit because this will be your saving grace when you have days where you make less intelligent food choices. Kids, jobs and other responsibilities are just excuses not to exercise. If there is a will, there is a way. I did exercise for the last 20 months and for the last month or so, I have been very slack with exercise and I feel more tired and run down as a result. You will have more energy, less sagging skin and a little more leeway occasionally to have a cookie or special treat. You can do this. Up your protein, drink lots of Water and exercise if you want a quicker result. And get a fill if you really need one. Babs in TX 334/180 -154 New goal: 170
