    Other Protein Alternatives

I found early on that shakes were not going to be a staple for me. After 2 weeks of having 5 a day preop, followed by 4 weeks of having them multiple times a day post op I was more than done with them. I am not someone that likes to eat sweet things that often, plus, I developed some dairy issues after surgery. I tried the protein waters, but, did not like how my mouth felt afterwards. After talking with my surgeon, he is totally fine with these not being a staple in my diet. I focus on getting my protein in via food I chew. The things I turn to most often are - egg whites (I have an intolerance to whole eggs), all types of meats and seafood in all different forms cooked in a variety of ways, Quest chips, protein bars (occasionally), cheese, magic spoon cereal, beans, unflavored protein powder added to soups or fat free refried beans. I easily hit my goal of 60-80 grams a day. I do have some non dairy shakes I keep in the house for the rare times I don't have any time to grab a non shake options, but, I honestly try to avoid doing this as much as possible.
  2. I just learned about protein water this week! What kinds have you tried? I start my strict pre-op diet next week, and I'm thinking I'll give some protein water a try.
  3. I'm scheduled for December 29! I'm in the phase where I am cautiously excited and still sort of feeling like I can't believe it's happening. I'm getting nervous and also chomping at the bit. I'm all over the place! LOL. My doctor has a protocol of 2-week strict diet before surgery. I start that on the 14th. On the 21st it goes to full liquid diet. A little nervous about that, but I know I can do it.
  4. 13 days until surgery and my husband comes home sick last night he says it is just allergies from moving hay for our horses I was going to sleep in the couch but he assured me it was allergies. He just sent me a text he is really sick - he had Covid end of July I am hoping it isn’t that again he says cold either way I get sick I can’t get the surgery and I’ve been in liquid for over 2 weeks now I am beyond upset and frustrated today

    Sick all the time

strictures get progressively worse pretty quickly, to the point you can't even keep fluids down. At that point, it's an emergecy. I had two of them (at weeks 4 and 😎 eight (not sure why that emoji is there). It only took a few days before I couldn't keep water down.
  6. You look amazing! What great progress. Congrats! I second what you said about taking the photos. I have been in a stall, but finally took a new set of pics and wow I could tell the difference 4 months out, and in some unexpected places! For those who don't want to do near naked pics, wear something really form fitting (ideally in colors/patterns that don't distort things/distract the eye) and then take the pics in the same outfit until you can't anymore because they are falling off. I find it is easier to compare photos when I am in the same outfit. It was quite motivating even when struggling with that obnoxious month 3 stall...
  7. I had my husband take photos of all three sides of me once a month on my surgery date until I hit maintenance 20 months later. I'm SO glad I have those photos! GooseyGirl is correct - you don't always see the difference month to month, but you can by comparing photos to ones that were taken three or four months earlier. Plus I love having the photo documentation of my journey!

    Baristatic App?

If your surgeon participates, they can get a code and you can link your account to them so they have access to all your information directly. If not, there is a report function that will email you a .pdf of weight, steps, and some very detailed nutrition data, including about a week of daily logs.

    Bliss

I'm day 22 and this time last week I was eating just purees, about 1/4 - 1/3 cup 2 or 3 times a day. Mostly whatever my family was having for dinner (I cook everything from scratch here) really well blended with broth or gravy. And I was spitting out anything that didn't blend properly just to be on the safe side (gristle from meat etc.) Smooth oatmeal with apple sauce about 1/3 cup total for breakfast or supper. Chicken soup with added protein powder for lunch. About 4-5 small portions of something spread over the day. I still had a protein shake every morning and I was drinking loads of coffee with milk and added skimmed milk powder - that's about 4g protein per mug. I started soft foods yesterday and boy is it filling compared to purees! I'm actually going to have to time it carefully to make sure I get my fluids in too - couldn't face anything for about 2.5 hours after my fish pie filling last night (about two tablespoons, LOL). If anyone had told me this a few weeks ago I would have laughed at them. I know exactly what you mean about the sleeping position I almost cried with joy the first time I could lie on my side again. Sounds like you're doing really well! 👊
  10. I’m 2 months post op. Still not used to eating slow or knowing exactly when to stop.. as a result I have been throwing up a lot the past two weeks Last week I felt a lot of pain in my stomach but it was gone within two days This week I’m feeling a sharp pain on the left side of my stomach 😔 it feels like the wound is burning on the inside.. it really feels like fire.. I feel something sharp when I lie down in certain positions My skin on that part of my body hurts to the touch I can’t go see a doctor as I’m not insured right now I know it’s because I threw up a lot but what do you think I should do from home to relieve the pain

    Baristatic App?

I switched to baritastic after my old app (SparkPeople) shut down and switched to spark America and didn’t allow for tracking. I miss being able to track more vitamins and minerals, especially with a vitamin d deficiency. I’ve never like the MFP interface so I only used it for like a week, while I’ve used the baritastic app for several months at this point, even while on maintenance to keep track of what I can.
  12. So I just finished clear liquid phase for a week and now for the next 3 weeks I am on "full liquids" Though I have no hunger and most of the time I feel full and not wanting to eat. Do I still go on about eating my meals on regular intervals even if I feel kinda full? I have my dietician appointment in about 2 weeks. But till then I just have to follow the schedule.
  13. I love so called medical people who don’t understand what being a vegetarian (even quasi) is. 🤷🏻‍♀️😱. Try beans & lentils as a source of protein, like you probably often did. Add them to your soups & blend them up till super smooth (strain after to be super sure). Many find anything that’s not super smooth too harsh to swallow & tolerate at first so go slowly. As a quasi vegetarian do you eat meat stocks? If so bone broths & the broths in pho, wonton soups, etc are also good protein options but only drink the broth part of course. Generally you can purée most things if you add enough liquids (stock, broth, gravy, milk, water).. Just doesn’t always taste pleasant but it’s only two weeks.

One week post op and 1 day.

I’m 5 weeks post op. I’m dealing with acid reflux, nausea and gas pains. It really tough. The nausea is the worst one deal with cause I’m only able to drink water, Gatorade2, Pedialyte and chicken broth. Today I had wicked gas pains and nausea. My doctor called in a prescription for Zofran and I can take 1 Alka-Seltzer antacid Heartburn relief chews. I’m hoping this will help me. My doctor did remind me that some of the nausea is related to me recovering from the rectus sheath hematoma which happened around 7 to 12 days after my surgery.
  15. Sugar free ice pops, chicken broth helps too. There’s a clear protein drink that’s 20 grams of protein i had to water it down it’s super sweet to me. You can make your own broth with chicken and veggies too, just strain it. I’m better, but it wasn’t fun in the beginning. Things still don’t taste right to me but today I was so happy to finally drink a whole cup of coffee. I didn’t have to drink decaf after I went to full liquids. I actually like Peets decaf it helped me that week I had to. Once I started eating more food I wasn’t as tired anymore, thank goodness. I would sit and just fall asleep like I had narcolepsy. 😂😂. You can’t drink Premier Protein? I hated whey protein though and I used to like it. I want to try it in the blender with peanut butter powder and half a banana. Someone know said it’s good so I’ll give it a shot. Every day is better. Just remember sip sip sip and keep moving. I felt almost normal by The end of the fourth week. I had 16 here for Thanksgiving, too!
  16. My RNY to RNY revision surgery will be December 21, assuming COVID doesn't throw a monkey wrench into the plans. I've been on a high protein/low carb Liver Reduction Diet for 7 months. I started with a two week full liquid diet to see if I could do it. The joke is on me: this clinic doesn't prescribe it. I will have to do two days of clear liquids for two days prior to surgery,1 day post-surgery, then full liquids for7 days, followed by 2-3 weeks of soft food, then gradually introducing "real" food.
  17. You might check with Dr. Victor Gonzalez in Dallas. (Medical Center Dallas on Forrest) He's who I just used for revision surgery. If it is medically necessary, it just is. He's a good surgeon. I had a sleeve to RNY revision almost two weeks ago.

    Sick all the time

those are pretty rare after the first three months post-op, but I suppose .. The numbing part is weird, though - unless it's from malnutrition? Anyway, yes, you're right - not normal or healthy. I'm hoping the surgeon checked all this out.

Clear liquids post-Op for 7 days?

I had revision surgery due to severe reflux. I got RNY two weeks ago this Friday. Yes, the day after Thanksgiving is when I did it. Ugh! I haven't had ANY reflux since surgery. I've moved on to smashed refried beans with no problems, but I'm supposed to be on a clear liquid diet of protein and broth for two weeks. Full liquids (no bumps or lumps), cream soups, milk and everything on the clear liquid diet.
  20. 1st lap band, my surgeon came in and said all went well, you can go home, you’re eating soup for next 3 weeks and walk a lot. No take home meds. Review in a week. Yeah I think Doc not too interested. Sorted it out with my GP.
  21. I know that there are a million topics about this already but to be honest I was still having a hard time mixing my protein powder (isopure zero carb) into hot soups for the full liquid phase. If I mixed it first, getting out all the lumps, then microwaved it, it would curdle. If I mixed with water and added it after heating, it would thin out the soup too much and cool it down even faster. I tried blender bottles, a vitamix, and milk frothers and nothing was working. I am having much better luck mixing the powder with a tiny bit of broth (just water was diluting the soup flavor). Mix it up into a thick paste and there are still dry spots and lumps. Then just leave it for a few minutes and it finishes mixing all on its own. The consistency starts off as thick oatmeal and after sitting is like heavy cream without any lumps. I then add that to the heated soup and don’t get any lumps, thin out the soup or dilute the flavor! I’m just super happy to have finally figured out something that doesn’t totally suck after 2 weeks of liquids. 😅 I guess it also helps that I am adding salt to the soups. It’s just 3oz of soup, and more sat is the only thing making this doable.
  22. Wow, wow, wow! I have noticed changes in my gait as well as foot dropping. It has intensified over the last weeks. I am seeing a chiropractor and it is helping. He is also having me work on stretching my hips. But this is exactly it. And yes, I've been crossing my legs too much. I am now really working on not doing it. Although I don't fit the definition of really skinny as I encountered in the articles I read, I have lost a disproportionate amount of weight from my legs since surgery which may have impacted the fat pocket that @MandoGetsSleevedreferred to.

    Last Supper

My incredibly kind neighbors prepared my "last supper". It was unreal. Filet mignon. Lobster tail. Cheesy potatoes. Roasted Brussels sprouts. And for dessert? Spiced chocolate pot de creme. I'm still dreaming about that meal...today is Day 3 of my 2-week pre-op diet.
  24. Keep going. I guess I'm experiencing a stall almost 6 weeks out. Keep going.

So hungry 15 minutes after eating

Oh I hear you. I am 3 weeks out and I was ravenous for two and a half of those so don't give up hope (I was just about to!) Over the last few days as I have been eating more protein and more solid textures it has definitely reduced drastically and I am staying much fuller for much longer after my still very small meals (1/3 cup approx). And what vikingbeast said. ^^^^
