4.5 Months – Eating Too Much?
Walter.Sobchak replied to ToughButFair's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 6 months out and for sure I can eat more than I could right after surgery. After surgery I could only consume about 6 ounces of food. Now I think it is closer to 10 ounces. I have also been making some poor dieting choices. Been trying to get back on track and get back to basics but it has been hard. I am down 100 pounds in 6 months, but have hit another stall and feeling sad about it. -
Cleaning your plate- advice?
Chris R replied to erp's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm only 3 weeks out myself, and I, too, can eat fast, and seem to be eating more than most on here. I eat 1 c of cottage cheese for lunch, and finish it in about 10 minutes without feeling overfull. The more solid the food, the less I am able to eat and the longer it takes me. I have been eating around 800 - 1000 calories a day, and getting way over my minimum Protein. I am able to drink pretty normally, I just don't chug like I did before surgery. Reading the experiences of most on here, it sometimes concerns me, but I have been losing about 5 lbs a week since surgery, not including the 10 lbs of Water weight I gained from the IVs in the hospital. (Including that would make it 8 lbs a week!) I'm happy with that. I also have not had any problems as far as throwing up, sliming, or anything like that. -

Just sleeved 6-17-19!!
Ninabnina77 replied to brittanyatwalsh's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's not bad statistics at all, very encouraging. When I started the pre OP diet I was 235 lbs, if I loose all the weight and only gain 5 to 10 lbs of the weight by 5 year or more I will be still so happy. To me that is still success. I am 5'9, my ideal weight to be is between 140-150 lbs. I hope I can make it to 140 lbs so I always have some room and dint freak out if I can a few pounds. I am very happy I met you on here, now we can compare our progress to one another. I wish us both lots of luck. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Well one thing I keep telling myself when I know I am not getting enough nutrition into me, is that I'm not going to waste away any time soon. I'm pretty sure I could sustain for quite some time. LOL I had a hard liquids day. I have to be more diligent in getting those liquids in. I am still about 10 oz. shy daily. I'm taking in about half the Protein I should be. I just keep working on it. I have no hunger, or nothing in me that triggers the need to eat anymore. I'm amazed at how this has changed my life already. No hunger. Do you know how cool that is? LOL I don't know how long this will last, I'd be happy if it were the rest of my life. I eat only because I am reminded I have to.

Anyone else out there OK with losing slowly with an unfilled or small filled band?
Cleo's Mom replied to coloradobanding's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
NO, NO, NO!!! You are not alone. I, like you, believe that you should be able to live a fairly normal life with the band. And a healthy life with the band. Isn't that what the band is all about? Those who suffer with daily PBing, vomiting, reflux, heartburn and pain in order to reach some number on the scale do so at their own peril. Having a too tight band and daily reflux could result in band erosion and/or esophageal cancer. Not to mention the quality of life is compromised. I was banded in September 2008 and have only lost about 25 pounds from the day of surgery (10 of those were from that 2 week post-op liquid diet). I might be losing about a pound a month now. My total weight loss from all the dieting I have done on my own and with the lapband journey is about 75 pounds. I am fine with that. What I was not fine with was when I was overfilled and developed reflux, heartburn and pain. When I had a slight unfill, those symptoms resolved. NEVER AGAIN - even if I don't lose another ounce. I count calories, eat healthy, low fat foods, exercise every day, keep a food journal, don't drink with meals and basically follow the lapband rules. I so agree with everything you said. And I'm glad you said it. Take care and good luck. -
Being denied due to weight gain...
Sajijoma replied to achappex3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all, don't stress. Stress raises your cortisol level which then makes more weight pile on. Stay calm. Most programs have a no net gain policy so if you gain 3lbs you gotta lose those 3 lbs to qualify. They just want to see that you can lose weight and maintain it. I too had trouble losing weight pre op. I would lose 10-15lbs and then like them back on without changing a thing. It was frustrating! I kept upping my exercise and water to make it through mine each time I'd gain 1lb, I'd add 5 more minutes of walking or 15 more sit-ups or whatever just to get through. In the end, I did lose quite a bit of weight before the actual surgery, but it was a fight to keep it off. Now that I'm on the other side, I haven't had those problems anymore and my weightloss has been just amazing! My recommendation is to try to do a low carb high protein diet with lots and lots and I can't say it enough lots of water! It will prepare you for life after surgery and help with the weight gain. -
Being denied due to weight gain...

Being denied due to weight gain...
achappex3 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Has this happened to anyone? I still have 3 months (October) until I will be done with my supervised diet. However, when I had my last visit I had gained 3 pounds. My Nut made me scared and told me that if I keep gaining, they'd deny my surgery. That of course terrified me. My reason for getting this surgery is because no matter how hard I try, I cannot lose more than 10-15 pounds before gaining them all back. I have been like this my whole life. It's gotten to the point where even my PCP thinks this is the best route for me. I cannot afford to not be able to have this surgery. Now before someone tells me what to do to help lose... I've literally tried everything. -I've cut out all sodas. -no sugary foods -limited carb intake. -weight watchers -slim 4 life. -etc. Idk what to do. I'm scared. And just stressing over stuff I may not be able to control. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Considering weight loss surgery, need feedback from those who've had it.
bewell replied to zackly's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Glad you are asking questions and checking weight loss surgery (WLS) out. This is a great place to get a lot of opinions! Here is one more opinion---I had continual complications with my lap band for 10 yrs and just had a revision to sleeve in jan. Short story of lap-band-I hurt every minute of those 10 yrs. Now for the 1st time in 10 yrs my stomach and belly does not hurt. And that is after major sleeve surgery. I just heard this and wish I had heard it 10 yrs before........when you look at the statistics for complications after 3 months after WLS surgery, the lap-band has the most ongoing complications and problems. Yes, the others sleeve, bypass etc have more in the first 3 months but the band by far has the most after. A foreign body in your belly that can slip, erode, get covered in scar tissue...a port that turns and hurts.....well just had to say that. As for cooking----I never cooked before my sleeve and now I am! I'm always looking for receipts that are healthy and taste good, easy to make, and can be made in small batches. It's still early in my sleeve life but I think cooking will be fun Zakly, I bet as a chief you can cook up an amazing book of receipts for us WLS folks. -

1 week out, down 9 lbs., Very weak!
JessaK replied to Ladyhawkhere's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
In my experience this is typical. I felt good but week for a couple of weeks. I have low blood pressure and heart rate so my body forced me horizontal a lot. I’m 20 days out and just now feeling stronger. Make sure you’re hitting your fluid goal every day and then your protein. I had to work up to my protein a bit. Protein water helped me because I have a hard time drinking shakes. You’re healing from surgery. It takes a lot of energy for your body to do that. I had rapid weight loss in the first 10 days because of it. -
Anyone denied AND they meet ALL criteria/co-morbidities
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Mariann812's topic in Insurance & Financing
Before my company switched to BCBS of Illinois I had Cigna. They are FANTASTIC about approving things as long as it's medically necessary. For example, I have MS. I take 4 medications for it. ONE of them (Tecfidera) is $8,900 per MONTH. As soon as they had the docs on file that I have MS, they covered it no questions asked with just a $10 copay. My other 3 meds total $3300 per month. Same thing. They also covered my 6 x-rays (3 with and 3 without contrast) every 6 months, no questions asked, because they are needed for my MS. So if your surgeon submits everything to them and lets them know it's medically necessary, I can almost guarantee it'll be covered no problem. -
I had my surgery on 10/12 and also am a big baby. I took pain meds for only the first 2 days after surgery. It was mainly for muscle soreness. I still can not lay on my side or tummy.. so sleep is not great! I also am getting tired of liquids! I would like to have a little more assortment. Anyway.. Regardless of sleeve or rny they still cut your tummy muscles and fill ya full of air. I researched and researched on the sleeve and rny. I really liked the sleeve too! Until I talked to my surgeon. I had a hernia with TERRIBLE gerd (acid reflux) and he said that the sleeve wouldn't have been option. However I would think recovery from either surgery is probably about the same. good luck in your decision! Only you know what's best for your own body.

I am doing everything I am supposed to do but sometimes I have restriction and can't eat and sometimes I don't so I may eat a little too much but overall not eating near what I was and I am not losing - it is weird to say but I feel like if I had eaten as few calories as I am now without the band I would have lost at least as much or maybe more - I was banded on June 27 and I think I am down about 10 lbs. I went in for one fill but had a sinus infection so I only got 1 cc and should have gotten another .5 so I am getting it next Monday maybe that will help. I get depressed about how slow it is coming off and I feel guilty if I eat because I want to lose weight so badly. This is just a venting post more than anything. Thanks.

Give me A typical day of eating!!!!!
To Be Thin 2011 replied to Dud2Stud's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Interesting replies for sure! I am almost 7 months out... my diet has been the same since March... I am totally focused on counting protien and carbs.. I drink an EAS Carb Control Protein shake every single day and would be lost without it... 110 calories, 17 grams of protien and 6 carbs.. I would not know how to start my day without one! You can purchase this brand at any Wal-Mart, or Wal-Greens...even Sams Club sells them. Mid Morning snack - Atkins brand Protien bar, you have to really read the box on each as there are different levels of Protein Bars in the Atkins plan.... I buy the choc chip granola that are 17 grams and the Peanut Butter ones that are 17 or 19 grams. For me,,, in the morning all I can do is the EAS shake,, then hour - two hours later a protien bar... it is like my tummy has to wake up. I eat Fat Free Cottage cheese everyday, and I only eat chicken, turkey, fish or lean beef... will not waste any effort on uping my carbs...no potato, Pasta, breads, etc.... In the last 7 months I have taken 3 bites of a bun from Red Lobster cause I just could not resisit! It takes so much will power! I found beef jerkey that has 22 grms of protien in only 1.5 oz packet! It is only 120 Calories - so between my shake, protien bar, 1/2 cup of cottage cheese and 1 bag of beef jerkey I can hit my protien goal very easily and with just this I have my calories under 600, carbs around 30 --for the day! I will eat 4 0z of quality meat for dinner, usually chicken breast or a couple slices of deli turkey breast... I drink a ton of crystal light and Water and am good to go!!! It works for me, no complaints! -
What is your definition of feeling full?
Strangefruit replied to taffyscorner76's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 10/22... I still don't have a good understanding of FULL...but know exactly the feeling of OVER full... With me, it's a feeling as though something is stuck in my chest, not my throat... and the difference between full and this horrible feeling can be as little as one more bite. My NUT jokingly says, "Eat until you are full, but stop two bites before..." That is exactly what I have to do... I am getting better at eyeballing the amount I should eat... and I stop before I feel "full" because I don't exactly have this feeling. But I know if I eat ONE BITE past this ... non feeling, then I was have the uncomfortable pain feeling in the chest that is only alleviated by throwing up. I also get this feeling if I eat too fast or don't chew well enough. Such is the life of a sleever. -
Would you get breast implant.....??
Michee replied to gg2007BandSTAR's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Breast Lift Here I come I have a tentative date for Dec 09. It is tentative until I pay the $1500.00 deposit. I started out wearing a 38 G (yes that does exist). After losing about 47 pounds I went out to buy a new bra. That was a 36 E. I have since lost 19 more pounds. I will be very happy as a D cup. It will mean buying bras at regular stores instead of paying over $150.00 at specialty stores. Once I get my breast lift, I am hoping that I will not need the industrial style bras, to hold the girls up in the rightful place. -
Hey Its Been 3 Yrs Of My Lap Band !!

I agree.... Ms. Jean is my favorite Guru..... on the lapband. She also has a wonderful newsletter that she writes. Local support groups are another great place to go. I was lucky to have a very great friend be my mentor. She had the surg a year before me. I would still be 223lb or more if not for her. I have had a great experience with my band so far. I was 223lb 5'2", banded 11/10/09. My doctor implanted the 14cc band. Stayed over night in hospital. Was up and walking within hours. Gas was about the worse part. But with experience from multiple surg before (2 c-sections, gallbladder, hysterectomy) i knew that the faster you get up and moving the better you are. liquids that week and mush the next which was Thanksgiving... ... But i made it through. In my opinion the first few month after the band was the worse for me. Little to no fill and i was starving all the time. And i could eat anything. This, i think, is when your self discipline will come in. You will have to say no and stick to the amount your doctor says to eat.... I bought a small kids plate, you know the cute ones with cartoons on them. Well they have the portion sections... i put only my amount of food and nothing more. Ate my Protein, then veggie, then starch. Most of the time i could eat the starch... No tv, reading, talking...etc while eating. No distraction from concentrating on chewing and chewing and more chewing. Take one bite, put the fork/spoon down. I would close my eyes and think about what i was eating and how good it taste. Did i cheat at anytime.... yes. But, as time goes by the things you thought you could never live with out, you find out you can. Bread was my biggest thing.... i LOVVEEE bread. But the first time you get stuck on bread you will never want to touch it again. Over the next 6 months i learned i could no longer eat.... Bread, pizza, rice, grits, anything over cooked (steak, chicken, pork) it had to be cook med. rare or med. I really started to fill restriction around 7cc in my band...... This is also when my husband said.... stop complaining about not losing enough weight. You have to start exercising more than twice a week.... so i got my lazy butt up and starting doing zumba 3x a week and weights 2x a week and i walk everyday. And he was right... i hated to admit it, but he was. When i weighed in May 6 i was at 177..... at one year i was 160, two years 146... today i weighed in at 143. couple other things i did that helped me.... i stopped ordering buffets, if we went to a buffet, i asked to order off menu. If not, i left. Also when eating out, as much as possible i ask if i could get a Half order, if not as asked for the waitress/waiter to bring a go box when the meal was brought out. I portioned out my meal and put the rest in the box.... closed it and gave it to my husband so i would not be tempted to go back in.... Never never never order anything to drink.... not even Water.... at this point the waitress will look at you like your an alien..... she will say... are you sure, not even water.... no, not even water. Until you can control you and your band... not even water. Out of habit you will take a bite and not even thinking... you will pick up the glass and drink.... and you will be sorry. My worse stick were from doing that very thing. Now you have to get up and run to the bathroom and .... well get rid of your meal you just ate. The only time i order drink before a meal is coffee at Breakfast.... I found that i never noticed my weight loss, but others did. You will need to be prepared to answer question like, how are you losing the weight.... what are you doing? To tell or not to tell... that's the question.... its a personal choice. I chose not to tell at first. Only my husband, two boy, daughter in law and My mentor Paula... knew. I didn't tell my mom and other family until my mom thought i was dieing because of the weight loss.....lol.. but true. I would tell people.. im watching what i eat and exercise... which was true. About 9 months into it i started telling people and got the "oh you had WLS" look..... the "you took the easy way out" look. Be prepared for that if you chose to tell. Also, be prepared for men to start really taking notice of you again and your husband (if you have one) to get jealous...... We also had a significant increase in "private time". Men will start to notice you and you will feel empowered and sometimes the increase in attention from other men tend to make some people stray.... Lots of divorce in couple that had WLS... 19 weeks ago i had my first plastic surgery..... a Tummy Tuck.... OMG. This was the second best thing i ever did for myself. I can now shave "down below" with out lifting a fat roll...... i can see straight down....lol. I have now changed my addiction from food to panties..lol... i know, i can't go shopping with out buying them. Threw out all the granny panties and replaced them with VS. Can't buy the bras yet..... but maybe in a year from now i'll have a reduction. We shall see. Take lots of pictures.... i wish i would have done that. More progress pictures in the same outfit. I hope this helped a little.... But know that EVERY bandster is different and my experience and yours will not be the same Good luck

I have extremely oily skin and my acne has never stopped, although it was better than my teenage years pre-op. Post-op, I've had a few of the cystic acne places I remember from high school, so I've been carefully treating those places. It's nowhere near as bad at 10 months out as it was at 3 months out, so I think it's finally calming down. I'll take some acne over the 100 pounds of fat any day, though!
