  1. As someone who is overweight I can tell you that you as a thin person who has been fortunate to never have dealt with a weight problem you don’t no how hard it is for your husband and you have an ignorant outlook on him just “doing a Keto diet “. Not every diet works for everyone and some people are not ready to make the commitment to change there life style . Pressuring like you are doing is not going to change things and actually you are more of a recipe for disaster than the lap band ever would be by trying to push weight loss on him. If he feels like he is ready for something like the band support him all the way. Food is an addiction which is over looked in our society. When a cocaine addict wants to go to rehab for addiction no one becomes unsupportive. Weight loss Surgery no matter which one is chosen should be supported and seen as a great tool. In all my opinion is support him or maybe you just are not right for each other anymore.

    Embarassing...smelly body odor?

Yeah getting that water is hard, kind of like a full time job! But I will help! The reason I asked about the all protein thing. Was because people that eat a very high protein diet with very little carbs will fall into ketosis. Atkins like diets can cause "keto-breath," its caused when excess ketones in the bloodstream. one chemical component of ketones, the odor is accompanied by a foul taste in the mouth. When the body is in ketosis, urine may also take on a peculiar smell. The body's capacity to store glucose is limited, so when its reserve has been exhausted by fasting, skipping meals or strenuous exercise, it switches into ketosis mode even when you aren't following a ketogenic diet. The presence of ketones in sweat may give it an acrid, ammonia-like odor. Upping your carbs a little bit might help.

    HELP! Cant stop eating!

I'm at about the same weeks out you are, I am probably 26 or 27. I have a lot of issues with head hunger at this point. I do not have physical hunger though, it is all in my head. Since I can eat more things with little to no discomfort, I just want to eat more. I wasn't going nuts or grazing but I realized head hunger was becoming an issue. So I restricted myself to get control. I log my food always but I log my food and I think about my goals. I think about summer every single time I want to eat something and I debate if it will help me meet my summer goal. Also drinking fluids all day will keep the hunger at bay and keep you satisfied l. I drink unsweetened hot tea in various varieties and flavors all day. It helps. Right now I am doing 2 shakes and one Protein meal a day (fish ). It has really helped me. I have a few low carb high protein Snacks. I have a chart that estimates what my weight loss will be if I stick to my plan, it is a keto calculator. I look at that and think about that goal when I think about giving in to head hunger. Not having physical hunger and being satisfied on very few calories is a luxury most people do not have. I'm not going to blow it by caving to my cravings. Think of your goals and focus on those. You can do it, you just have to decide what matters and find a way to work with yourself. Your way might not be my way, but you can do it.
  4. I don't tell anyone unless I absolutely have to. My s/o doesn't even know--we met post-op so I didn't feel the need to tell him. He's noticed the weight loss but figures it's just because I'm working hard to lose weight (which I am!). I say I'm doing the keto diet and exercising 3+ times a week... which isn't a lie, just omitting the part where I had surgery haha. I say I had acid reflux/hernia repair surgery if I need to explain that part--laparoscopic fundoplication leaves similar scars. Make sure if you tell a story that you're consistent with it though; I've had the same coworker ask me on 4 separate occasions what I did, I think she's trying to catch me in a lie Soooo nosy.

    Intermittent Fasting

Hi all!!! Im due to be sleeved on 8-21-17. Im excited and a lil nervous but am anticipating the out come. I just wanted to jump in on the IF...It was one of the the methods I used along with the Keto lifestyle and it worked very well. But then I developed heel spurs and had to have foot surgery and was in bandages and a cam boot for a while and was knocked out Ketosis. But it really works if your disciplined. I am considering the Ketogenic lifestyle along with IF again after surgery when im fully healed. I think it's great for those who hit a plateau in losing. mybariatricjourney

    First real foods

I'm very confused by both your post. They seem either irrelevent or that you have confused what the op is saying. This individual is not keto. He is a new bariatric paitent so what has that got to do with anything? Your point is don't be afraid of fat ? Why make that point that poster did not tell anyone to be afraid of fat. All she said to the guy is follow your plan as if we are meant to have protein first how is 60% of a meal being fat following the plan. She didn't say not to have healthy fat with healthy protein. But you definitely agree with the poster so what is your point then ? I am so confused your responses are like your responding to a post I can't see. 7. Although 800 cals isnt going to break the bank, you dont mention your protein intake. Getting too little protein can keep you feeling deprived/hungry all the time. I'd first start adding more protein (either with shakes or real food or combo of both) before worrying about upping calories/carbs. Other thing I'll say, and I'm sure to get flack over it, some interesting studies coming out suggesting a low calorie keto diet will preserve BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) better than a higher carb intake of equal calories.

    Feeling Deprived!

Congrats on your weight loss so far. Feeling hungry could be from diet boredom. Is it real hunger or head hunger? Now you’re on a regular diet, can you switch up some of your food choices? I added seafood (fresh fish, prawns, etc.) to my diet, tried different vegetables & new recipes through out the weight loss phase to keep things interesting. Try some plant based proteins if you’re open. I’d check your protein intake as @Pckeys suggested. Protein will keep you feeling full for longer. You can always add a little more even if you are meeting your goal. My pre surgical diet was keto too but now in maintenance my diet is way more balanced. For example, I still avoid most root vegetables, rice, bread & pasta but do eat small serves of whole or multi grains in other forms. I keep my fat intake low. I did eat rolled oats during weight loss but that was the only obvious carb I ate except for those that occur naturally in foods like in fruit. Some of the readings I’ve done about keto is that it should be for the short term not for life. However, I believe avoiding carbs during weight loss certainly helped me reach & exceed my weight loss goal so I'd be reluctant to add more at this stage but that’s my opinion. It does take time to work out what will work for you for weight loss then maintenance. Good luck.
  9. So I've been trying to get more Protein into my system and get closer to the surgery diet as I can while I wait to start the process. I'm on the keto diet but I'm having problems getting my protein in. Which one of these 3 would you guys choose? I know everyone loves the Premier Protein ones but it bothers me that they have more carbs in them than I've seen others contain. Nature's Best Perfect Zero Carb Isopure GNC Pro Performance 100% Whey Protein Premier Protein Whey Protein I'm probably making this harder than I need to but after being so unhealthy for so long I want to make sure I'm getting as many nutrients as I can the best way that I can.

    Altered Taste

I just googled Fairlife, and that might be an option for me. I'll look at soy milk and rice milk, too, but iirc they're a little too high in carbs for me right now. (I've voluntarily started a low-fat ketogenic diet, so that I can reach my doctor's 10% weight loss goal for before my surgery. After the procedure I plan to be a bit more moderate in my approach to things. The irony that I'm more restricted now than I will be a month after surgery has ... not escaped my notice.) They make peanut milk, now, too, which I know literally nothing about, except that it exists. I'll also have a look at that. I vaguely recall coconut milk won't work, but I might be mixing up keto and WeightWatchers in my head? I'll look. I'm only really invested in using up the Quest powders because I have them in my house right now, you know? When I replace them I'll try something else. People seem super into the Syntrax Nectar, so that's a possibility. And I liked Muscle Milk OK in the past. (I liked Premier Protein, too, but my team won't allow it because the first ingredient isn't protein isolate. Other kinds of protein are, in their minds, inferior. Since there are so many options out there, I'm not going to fight with them about this.) Anyway, thanks for the suggestions! And also, I'm with you on avoiding Amazon!

  12. Ok, so a preliminary google search HAS turned up several books that coorelate DS and stool/body odor. Also several Bariatric practices mention the same. So, I feel comfortable saying that malodor is a relatively common side effect of the DS. What to do about it.. there were several references to dietary control. Carbs can cause it (that's a new one on me! There must be a fine line between being in ketosis (keto breath!) and too many carbs...), as can too much fat intake. Other than controlling diet, there are internal deodorizers, such as chlorophyl and devrom, that can help remove the odors. James, if you haven't tried one of those internal deodorants, you may want to give them a try. Apparently they can help breath too. RNY doesn't result in odor issues as often as DS, but it can happen. It's the malabsorption component that causes it.
  13. I was sleeved 7/4/17, so I am a little over a year out. I was sleeved in Mx, so I haven't seen my bariatric team since my surgery (as far as post op checkups, etc.) . My weight loss has slowed down quite a bit and I have been between 173-178 for the past few months (30 years old, 5'8 and trying my best to exercise 3-5 times a week). I was hoping that some people who were about a year out could tell me how they are doing and what their approx. macros are. I have been trying to follow bariatric keto for a few months...but it really doesn't seem to be a good fit for me. I had the ketone strips and joined a special "bariatric keto" group on Facebook and they provided me with macros, but according to the strips I never got into ketosis Any advice or support would be greatly appreciated. I know I have come so far and made great progress, but I would like to continue this journey and get to a "normal" BMI before adding on to our family. Currently, I'm eating anywhere between 1,000 - 1,200 calories a day. Protein : 60-80 g Carbs: 0-50g (total, not net) Most days typically under 25g Fat: 25-65g Water: 80-100oz

  15. Hello! I am new to the forum but hoping to be more active. I have been considering a revision for quite some time now and would love people's opinions and possibly some experience with revisions. I am not sure if I want to have my gastric sleeve resized, have it converted into a DS or possibly have it converted into a RNY. For some backstory: I got the gastric sleeve almost 8 years ago and I feel like I did rather well, I lost roughly 100 lbs total. I maintained this weight loss for about 4 years doing extremely well. I then ended up getting pregnant with my daughter in 2017. I have medical conditions as well that makes weight loss extremely difficult too (I have PCOS and possibly hypothyroidism.) I ended up gaining back 60 lbs and for the life of me cannot lose it. I tried exercise, many different diets (low calorie/high protein, low carb, and keto with no luck. The only thing that seemed to work for me was the sleeve. I definitely want the surgery revised in some way but I am unsure how to proceed. Does anyone have any advice? It would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.
  16. I say I had acid reflux surgery & am doing keto Not super inaccurate. They addressed my reflux issues during the surgery and I am eating ketogenic foods.
  17. You probably can (always check with your doctors on such questions, rather than someone else's) but do you really want to be letting junk food back into your diet so soon? It may be keto, but it is still basically empty calories, and liquid calories tend to be the best way to eat around your WLS. Not good to be getting into such habits so soon.
  18. Ok so everyone has different thoughts of idiotic questions when I hear people talking about hair loss or saggy skin I think that’s idiotic but I stay hushed cause it’s like duh. You could a said hell no to the bullet proof coffee and said yeah to black coffee or give me options for hot drinks. I’ve see protein powder in coffee and stuff like that. Kfc on the way home from bariatric surgery equals Keto coffee. Riiiiiight.
  19. just another update… down to 374.4! thats 65 lbs this year so far! it’s been several years since i have seen my weight under 390!! Been doing some really hard emotional work and am pretty used to the keto… think that combo is bringing success

    Good eating Habits

I used to make lists for my nutritionist and email them before our meetings so I didn't forget anything. That helped me to get the most out of my visits. Your nut can be a great source of information. I went every month or two for the first year. Protein is very important of course and definitely learn and stick to the rules they give you. Start reading labels and reading nutrition information from reputable websites. There is a lot to learn and fine tuning your diet is going to take some time. Low carb high protein is just one step in the right direction. In the beginning weight loss is much easier. Once you can eat more the weight loss slows, you have to look at your diet in more detail. You are eventually going to want foods you ate before. Know that there are many low carb alternatives out there. I made low carb bagels this morning that weren't half bad. I am now transitioning to a Keto diet which is high in fat, moderate in protein and low carb. I don't suggest this for a while. But at one year out, I find the higher fat (healthy fats) help me with the cravings while still facilitating weigh loss. I agree with the previous posts, and would strongly recommend you stop sugar and processed carbohydrates. I have found so many improvements since removing them from my diet in addition to weight loss. I have found that most people on this site understand the struggle, are very helpful and full of great information. Wishing you the best and looking forward to your 1 year post op post sharing your success :-)
  21. I'm a 34 year old woman with a current weight of 260 height is 5'6. I have lost and gained over 60lbs at least 3 times. I was never able to maintain the weightloss for longer than 6-8 months at a time. I have done strict Keto, Fasting, and intense exercise routines multiple times in my life. I was successful in losing weight every time so it wasn't that I couldn't commit myself or apply weightloss techniques that work for me. I would just simply go back to overeating every time. I really don't know if fasting will work for me longterm if I add coaching. I certainly want it to work but I have small children and a husband who likes to eat big hearty meals so cooking and shopping for food are part of my regular daily activities. I find when I'm fasting it is really difficult to cook a hot delicious meal that I simply cannot even taste. So I end up cooking a quick meal for my family which is not the healthiest. I will keep exploring the surgery option. I really appreciate all of the feedback so far. The new ideas like searching for my own bariatric therapist and using my family doctor to do my bloodwork after surgery has given me some hope that I can do this. 😊

    Denied and Grieving

Are you sure it is a year before trying again? That doesn’t make sense. I honestly would try fighting it. Get measured again and don’t stand so tall, put on the couple pounds. Ask your insurance company to send you their requirements in writing so you know exactly what you need to do. If you do keto watch you cholesterols because mine went up. My dr said that is not something maintainable for the long term. Does your surgeon office have a coordinator there who can help guide you through this?

Ketosis - How safe is it?

Thank you! We do seem to have a similar journey. It's good to see another person who started at a higher weight, since it seems RNY is more common for people with as much to lose as us. My surgeon actually had to verify my starting weight when I met with him right before surgery. He thought it might have been a typo since it's pretty uncommon to lose that much before surgery lol. When I told him it was right, he was delighted and said it really bodes well for my post-surgery success. I also didn't have to do the 2-week liquid pre-op diet, he said with the weight I lost my liver was already smaller, so it wouldn't make much difference. I just had to increase to 2 Protein shakes a day, and only a light meal the day before surgery. I don't like cooking much, so I didn't do anything special. I mostly took meals I already ate and made them keto-friendly. I'm hispanic, and tacos/burritos were a common meal, so I make taco salad instead of having tortillas and skipped the rice completely. I also switched to hand seasoning instead of using those seasoning packets. They can be surprisingly carby (cornstarch added, sometimes sugar too). I saute Morningstar crumbles with ground chili powder, cumin, garlic and onion. Serve over some lettuce and top with cheese. We also enjoy a good Indian curry, so I just made sure to check the sauces for sugar. Quorn makes a great veggie-chicken and you can get it either in pieces or cutlets, just make sure it's not the breaded version. Paneer cheese, diced "chicken" and spinach simmered in curry sauce is really tasty and a one-pan dish. Now that I'm post surgery I don't have room for sides, but pre-surgery mashed cauliflower makes a decent substitution for mashed potatoes.
  24. I don't have any kind of official hormone dx except "jacked". Several years ago started having cripplingly heavy periods. Found awesome hormone doctor, discovered I had no testosterone, very low progesterone, and was swimming in estrogen. Started natural hormones and have been mostly functional since. I get tested every three months and we make micro-adjustments. I went off all hormones a couple of months ago and it was *horrible*. So, back on the hormones and it calmed down again. And then I started the pre-op diet. My surgeon just wanted low carb, so I decided to go straight into ketosis - I even started a week early to try and get the hang of it. Diet went well, but period hit like a ton of bricks. I was so anemic from blood loss I could barely walk up the stairs. I was tanking Iron like a crazy person trying to be ready for surgery. The Keto bloggers claim this is your body basically doing a giant fat related estrogen dump. (Some also call it "Shark Week" and claim it's not unusual when you first go into low carb ketosis.) Their theory is that fat is full of estrogen; you're now burning tons of fat; hence your body is now swimming in excess estrogen and messing everything up. Is there any truth to this? I have no idea. In my case, my estrogen levels had been falling off (I'm 45) and spiked right back up again last month. So my hormone doc is going to keep testing and adjusting to try and keep things reasonable. I was only sleeved a few days ago, so we'll see how it goes. Consider going to see your hormone doctor, if you have one, or discuss it with your surgical team. Everyone says your hormones will be crazy after surgery, but it's good to have a plan in case things don't settle down on their own. My niece was like you - heavy periods eventually turning into ruptured cysts - and they must have had her on four or five types of birth control before they found one that helped. Don't be afraid to push people to find something that works for you and your new body Good luck! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  25. My Dr., PA, NUT and nearly every other medical professional has recommended biotin and an increase in protein. I started biotin early this year with my Keto diet and my hair has never been more healthy. It is going to remain my go to until someone medically tells me not to.
