    Sandwiches and chips

I'm on day 7 of my pre-op diet, and that is exactly what got me through day 5 -- which was the first Friday when I couldn't order a pizza/look forward to eating in front of the TV after a week of work. It really helped to remind myself that in just three more weeks I can start having yogurt again, in four more weeks I can go back to having (sf) pudding and applesauce and tuna and steamed veggies (etc.), and by February all dietary restrictions should be lifted. There may well be many foods that I never have again, but that will be by choice.

    no more dairy...ugh! Breakfast?

I have seen Skyr yogurt that is lactose free...Skyr is delicious. Other than that I would recommend hard boiled eggs, or Cream of wheat (with a splash of caramel sugar free syrup) is so tasty like pancakes. I always make oatmeal in the am with protein powder, and Peanut Butter powder. Most ultrafiltered milk is lactose free (Fairlife)...maybe you can try some lactose free products? If not, oatmeal made with water vs milk works just as well too. Chia seed pudding with coconut milk would be pretty tasty too....and you can leave that overnight and grab some in the am. I have a slenderized version of the recipe if you'd like it
  3. When at your stage I was having only 1 protein shake in the morning with an egg that I could not finish. For lunch I had tuna or chopped chicken with a little Mayo and yogurt mixed in to keep wet. I barely got in 3 ounces. Dinner very similar. Force water all day between meals. I am 2 and 1/2 months out and I am still 800-900 calories and feel satisfied.

    no more dairy...ugh! Breakfast?

You can also fry a week's worth of eggs in advance and keep them in the refrigerator. Warm them in the microwave along with a slice of Canadian bacon or pre-cooked bacon and a bit of cheese in the time it takes to toast an English muffin. Then assemble and eat in the car. (Sorry for being unresponsive to your actual question. I don't use yogurt of any kind, including plant-based.)

    no more dairy...ugh! Breakfast?

There are nut and coconut yogurts especially for vegans. I like coconut milk best of all the alternate milks.

    no more dairy...ugh! Breakfast?

Can't help on the yogurt, but one of my favorite grab-and-go breakfasts is hard-boiled eggs.
  7. Hey folks... So after feeling like garbage for over a month when I started soft foods, it turns out I am really, really sensitive to dairy since my surgery so anything like that is a no-go. My whole diet has basically been cheese milk and yogurt since my surgery and while I'm happy to know now why I was having so many issues (they were so bad I was worried I had a stricture or had developed a hiatal hernia), I'm not sure what to eat now! I'm on soft foods for another month. Does anyone have any good recommendations of a plant-based yogurt that doesn't taste like liquid oatmeal? I tried the soy-based Silk ones and they're just so gross. Any other ideas for quick grab-and-go breakfasts? (I start work ridiculously early, I don't want to be frying eggs at 5 AM).

    Food Before and After Photos

Went to a Turkish restaurant by myself for lunch today. The haydari (strained yogurt dip) and the vegetable stew were delicious but the Star of the show was definitely the keskul (rice and almond pudding) for dessert. I ended up eating most of it even though I was pretty full already. I did not take the leftover flatbreads or the rice home.

    Post op day 2

Day 10 A couple things have changed since my last update. I have a superficial thrombophlebitis in my arm above where my IV was. I did notice a couple days after being home that my upper arm was a bit sore and tender, mostly when I was using the arm. But then I noticed it was a little bit pink. Only then did I think “oh this could be a blood clot”. Now this isn’t a deep vein thrombosis, but really the only way to know is through ultrasound, and since i wasn’t willing to risk a PE, I went to the ER. No treatment, just warm compress. The other thing that has developed is that my diaphragm feels really sensitive/tender. Kinda like when you get bumped (or hit) in you belly. So I feel slightly nauseous. Even my bra resting on the diaphragm area is irritating. My muscles definitely feel weak. I’ve mostly been surviving on water, a couple ounces Greek yogurt, sugar free jello, and sugar free pudding. I’m going to try another protein shake today. My dietitian said to basically stay hydrated and take my vitamins. I’m doing normal daily things, taking my kid to the playground (though i’m not playing), driving, Grocery shopping, and house work. one more day until purées! Wahoo!

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I started puréed at the one week mark. So many doctors require different things. I followed my friends plan (i was allowed to start puréed on week 2 for me). I lost so much weight (not healthily) bc I couldn’t drink anything anymore I wanted to chew so I preferred not to eat and was starving. Nothing has felt bad so that’s good. I was on yogurt and stuff when I got home from hospital. My follow up is tomorrow so hopefully all is well. listen to your body. If something feels like it’s not setting then remove it and try again at another time.
  11. Dalila you are doing great! You’ve reached your goal and you need to be a bit kinder to yourself. It sounds like you’re making very sensible food choices. Everyone stretches their pouches - you would not be able to sustain enough nutrition for a normal life if you didn’t. You are a success story! Enjoy your yogurt with strawberries and peanut butter - it must slip down very easily and sounds nutritious, tasty and highly digestible. Brilliant!
  12. Hi there. Please help. I’m 1.5 year post op and I’m so worried. I’m able to eat 170grams of yogurt with 30g protein granola and 50grams strawberries with 15grams of peanut butter. So worried and anxious that it’s not normal. Am I stretching my sleeve? 😭😭😭 is this normal. I make sure to keep my dinner portions to 170grams. Please help guys.. I’d love to hear.. I’m struggling so much mentally.
  13. I liked refried beans a lot. I ate them with cheese and/or ff greek yogurt. You could try the vegan versions of these, or just eat the refried beans by themselves. Also, tofu would be okay, because it's soft and is high in protein. Maybe hot and sour soup just eating the broth and the tofu, not the woody vegetables? Or tom yum soup with tofu? Or a tofu scramble? Hummus is something I've eat a lot of, although I've eaten it with meat or egg, but you could try it with tofurkey or something similar. It must be really hard to find things to eat that are high in protein that are vegan! Good luck!

How to Stop Grazing? Please Help!

Grazing has become my normal way of eating. I rarely sit down for a full meal. Instead I eat around six mini-meals throughout the day. It's the same number of calories because I am not grazing AND eating meals. I'm spreading the day's calories across a longer time period. And of course, I'm eating on plan, nutrient dense, protein-rich food and not junk. I start with protein coffee in the morning and generally finish up with a Dannon Light & Fit yogurt before bed, eating something about every two hours. So far it works for me.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I find it pretty interesting as well... The pre-op diets really vary from doctor to doctor. I was instructed to do a strict 10 day liquid diet (protein shakes, broth, tea, sugar free jello) and the day before surgery I had to switch to a clear liquid diet (apple juice, tea, protein water) along with a colon cleanse laxative... Now post-op, I'm on day 6 of the post-op clear liquid diet. Tuesday (after my 1 week checkup appointment) I'll be able to go back to drinking protein shakes, coffee, tea, as well as adding 2 tablespoons of grits, mal-to-meal, and yogurt! This diet lasts for 2 weeks. I'm really looking forward to this next phase! 🤗

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I didn’t experience that at all. I guess I’ve been super lucky. All liquids have gone down pretty well. I’ve had protein shakes, broth, jello, yogurt and some black bean soup today. One more week of the full liquids. How are you doing now?

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I started my pre-op on 10/26 and I'm down 15 so far. I've been having mostly protein shakes, protein water, a few meals with a protein and vegetables, fage 0% plain greek yogurt with tajin seasoning, protein powder with bone broth, and 1/2 cup of oatmeal a few times. I've also been mixing the protein shakes with hot decaf tea or decaf coffee to change things up now and then. My plan also allows sugar free pudding, apple sauce and sugar free jello as snacks, but so far I haven't had them. I'm counting down to Tuesday 11/9.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hi everyone, I had my VSG surgery on Monday, came home on Wednesday. My pre-op diet was two weeks prior to surgery - I was living on blended Greek Yogurt (as low sugar as possible) and Atkins protein shakes. The first couple of days weren't terrible I did a gradual transition with the pre-op diet in the week prior to officially starting.
  21. I developed a couple aversions that are noteworthy. The first is yogurt. I used to eat lots of yogurt, specifically a Kroger artificially sweetened one they call Carbmaster. In preparation for surgery, I bought 40 or 50 cartons. Almost 6 months after surgery, I have forced one or two down. The rest are in the garage refrigerator waiting to be thrown out. I also used to drink protein shakes from an outfit called Diet Direct. They cost about $11 for a box of 7, powder in envelopes. (They have to be mixed up in a blender.) The Premier Protein shakes taste better to me and they have more protein. But I own 50 or 60 boxes of the kind I don't like any more. My recommendation to anybody who hasn't had surgery yet: don't stock up on anything, even things that are mainstays of your diet. You might be wasting your money.

Regrets for a Food & Wine Lover?

This is true hunger. My bariatric therapist said about 20% of her patients have no loss of hunger after surgery. It feels exactly like if I had gone all day without eating prior to surgery, but I have it all the time, even right after a meal. I don't have specific cravings for food, although my mom served my favorite cake last night (there were guests besides me there) and I definitely wanted some, but decided the risk of starting back on eating cake wasn't worth what I remembered the cake tasting like. I had a ff greek yogurt instead. It was a little sad, but I'm glad I made that choice. Of course, I've lost 25 lb in the 8 weeks since surgery and I'm down 75 since I started preparing for surgery in February, so I'm trying to focus on the positive. It's just that I too thought everyone looses their hunger and starts craving healthy foods. It's just not true (although MOST people do lose their hunger for about 6 months).

Regrets for a Food & Wine Lover?

I don't drink (never liked the taste) but I've definitely been enjoying food a lot since surgery. I eat a lot less (I am less than 2 months out, so I eat about 2 oz of meat/protein at a time), so that is definitely hard, but I still enjoy the food. Is this process easy. NO WAY! You have to change your relationship with food or it won't work. You can still enjoy food, but if you eat the same crap food you ate that made you obese, you will lose weight then gain it right back, or you will not lose much to begin with. This has been the hardest part for me. I am resisting changing WHAT I eat, because I enjoy rich, sweet, restaurant foods. I don't want to eat simply seasoned, fresh, healthy foods. But I want this process to work, so I'm doing my best. I travel every week for work so some days I buy food from the grocery store and eat roast beef, hummus, prechopped veggies, ff greek yogurt, protein shakes, etc in my hotel room, and yes, it's a bit sad. Sometimes I do go out to restaurants and order something, enjoy my few oz of protein and a tiny bit of veggies, but I feel like it's not healthy enough... If you think you can live your old life eating five course restaurant meals after surgery, sure, you can do that after a few years, but you will gain your weight back. Just like any other weight loss scheme, you have to eat less. Right now, I physically can't eat much at one time, but if I were to graze or eat junk food, my weight loss would slow. And I was counting on not being hungry and I'm starving all the time. And I was counting on my tastes to change so I wouldn't like unhealthy food. Nope! This is hard. Think carefully. I don't regret doing it, but it's the hardest thing I've ever done, and I lost 100 lbs through diet and exercise. This is way harder in many ways.
  24. Hi All I am a chef by profession and feel that though I am going through the same as most (currently in puree stage) I refuse to give up my desire to eat well and be creative. My weight loss is going great and I have been keeping the diet prescribed to me by my physician. I have, however, stretched my creative muscles to incorporate flavors I like into my day. This is one of my more successful ones. I am also trying to eat more vegetarian and vegan and this was a good place for that as I use Just egg and vegetarian sausage. If I had cashew yogurt I would have used that instead. 208 calories / 15 carbs / 12g protein (vegetarian) should yield 1/4 cup. If more only eat what you are prescribed. 1 Morning Star Farm vegetarian Sausage Link 1/2 cup Oat Milk 1 ts Low-fat Greek Yogurt (plain) 1/4 ts rubbed sage 1/4 ts garlic powder 1/4 ts dried chives (optional) Ground black pepper 1 ts corn starch disolved in 1 ts of water 1 egg or 3Tbl. Just Egg Over medium heat. Cut up one sausage link and, in a small pan sprayed with cooking spray, sauté until lightly browned. Add Oat Milk, yogurt, sage, garlic powder and chives if you are using and stir until the yogurt dissolves and the gravy starts to simmer. Let it start to cook down a bit. Stir the cornstarch and water slurry well to make sure it is fully dissolved and add it to the gravy. Bring up the heat and stir till thickened to the consistency you wish. If too thick, add some water. Remove from the pan and put the gravy into a small food processor. Blitz until smooth and the sausage is well incorporated. Make your egg or egg substitute scrambled fine so it meets puree standards and serve with the gravy on top. Though you are using about 1/2 cup of milk and such, out leaving you with approximately 1/4 cup of sausage gravy. This is decadent, has the flavors you want, has a good amount of protein and meets the requirements. Cheers J
  25. I was hoping that my tastes would change after surgery, but they really did not, with the exception of french fries/fried potatoes (tried two different types out of curiosity and they just tasted mealy and gross). I enjoy the protein shakes and artificially sweetened yogurt. I haven't had any real sweets yet, so I guess I'm hoping to break up with those. I'm at my parents' house right now and there are some other guests so my mom bought my favorite cake from the fancy French bakery and I didn't try it. I am afraid that I will like it and I won't stop eating sweets. Also, I had a bit of fear of dumping, even though I had the sleeve. I ate a light and fit greek yogurt watching them eat the cake... it was a little sad.
