Food Question
iwannabslim replied to latinmami0511's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For the yogurt, I purchased plain greek yogurt. That has only 9 g sugar compared to the kind with fruit. I was actually told to avoid the kind with fruit in it because of the skins, seeds, and fruit chunks. I put a couple of splenda packets in the plain along with a splash of some flavor extract (I've been using almond extract and cherry flavored extract). -
surgery 1 week from today. question on post-op drinks/sugar
barrbdoll replied to rxkid2384's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I'm a lil over 9 months out and I have lost 120 lbs.... I drink coffee with creamer and splenda usually every day and enjoy a glass of red wine at least once per week. I've enjoyed fresh full sugar lemonade and iced tea on occasion but don't make it a habit. I've never been one to have a sweet tooth either but if I want something sweet I eat it! The difference is now I have CONTROL!!! Before I was sleeved I would eat 8 or 9 Oreos and today... maybe 1 or 2... The same with chocolate.. I have miniatures from Halloween still laying around and I will have a couple and there but nothing like before. Ice cream is the same.. Before my sleeve I could eat a large bowl. Now?? maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup and am completely satisfied. But usually if I am craving something sweet I will eat a few slices of an apple with Peanut Butter or some yogurt. In general... I can eat everything that I ate before my sleeve... except bananas.... they make me puke for whatever reason... LOL Hope this helps! -
No I thought scrambled eggs was for the third stage. I thought stage two was just pudding and yogurt, and creamed soups, stuff like that. But I think every surgeon has a diff diet.

I bring cheese sticks, diced chicken, a side salad, Greek yogurt, lots of bottled water, carrots and hummus, protein bars and a protein drink. I'm a nurse and I also work 7a-7p 3-4x's a week. I try to pack at least 3 meals and a few snacks when I go to work. -
It's the end of the world as we know it....and I feel fine!

I'm anxious for Wednesday morning to come, I'll be banded first thing, so I'm hoping to go home same day. I have a wonderful friend who is taking my boys overnight tomorrow and keeping them all day on Wednesday. I went shopping today, stocked up on soups, yogurts, shakes and jello. I don't have to do a clear liquid diet after, just 3 shakes and 2 blended meals. I'm not sure why everyone has different rules on what they can eat post op. I understand we are all on a different path to weight loss, but you would think there would be some consistentcy with what we can eat and when we can eat it. My doctor just says blended, no chunks. I think I'll just stick to liquids, I'm big on texture and I don't think I could eat blended chicken! -
Had a second fill today and I'm feeling serious restriction eating yogurt. I wonder if this will pass after a day or so or if I'm just too tight? Water goes down (I feel it go) but I'm surprised that I'm feeling yogurt just hang around in my chest. Thoughts?

Pre-op diet? What is allowed?

Hi everyone, I know the shakes, jello, and broth are allowed. My doctor ever allows veggies I've heard. Is yogurt allowed? Anything else? -

How do you calculate your protein intake?
Bufflehead replied to leliwhoaoh's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I weigh all my food -- except the stuff that comes in single servings like yogurt cups -- on a digital scale, and track everything on myfitnesspal. I know kicking carbs is hard, I struggle with it too! I have found it very useful to go extremely low carb -- under 30 grams of carbs -- for three days to kick the cravings. Those first two days especially are awful but after that it gets easier and the cravings go away. Good luck to you! -
Foods for best weight loss
reverie replied to Yetta2u's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It really is all about calories in calories out; you need to burn more calories than you eat or eat less calories than you burn. No specific list of foods is going to guarantee weight loss. I'd suggest sticking to eating your Protein first, especially chicken, turkey, and fish. Try to get 3-4oz each meal. Eat vegetables and fruits as well, and if you're still hungry eat a little bit of starch. (ie. corn, Beans, rice) On a daily basis I am eating eggs, turkey bacon, oatmeal, chicken, beans, rice, mixed vegetables, fruit, cheese, protein (on weight-lifting days), cottage cheese, Protein Bar, greek yogurt, broccoli, carrots, etc. I believe variety is important. Find what works for you.. Good luck. -
Foods for best weight loss
Jachut replied to Yetta2u's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just eat less! But I think the easiest way to keep calories low is to cut out the starchy part of a meal - the breads, pastas, rices, noodles, those are the calorie dense foods that add up - as does fat. I dont believ in low carbing it, but I did greatly reduce the carb and fat portion of my diet. So dinner might be a small piece of steak on the barbecue and a big salad, I dont feel the need to for a potato to go along with that, although we do have sometihng like spaghetti bolognaise once a week or so. I choose salads, yogurt and fruit and Soup for lunch, might have some crispbreads or crackers with that but would rarely choose a sandwich with 2 slices of bread in one meal. Breakfast is when I indulge most in carby foods - I love my Peanut Butter toast, or bowl of Cereal - but its ONE piece of toast, a small bowl of cereal and I round it out with fruit or yogurt instead of large servings. An hour's running a day burns up a lot of energy too, so that I never have had to give up anything totally. -
Hey Chelley, mary s here - I just saw your post...girl are you eating enough calories - yeah i know you can't put it in when you are having a day of pbing But your memu looked really teeny - it looked like 600 calories to me. Do you think you might not be eating enough - maybe your body is in that starvation mode and holding onto your weight? Also, it didn't look like enough Protein - i'm sure dr. miranda can address that better than me... do you like cottage cheese and milk - they are easy to eat and i like mixing yogurt with cottage cheese (approx 28grams of protein/1 cup) - it makes it more substantial. Best of all - good protein sources. Also fish and Beans are good protein sources - i cook black beans until really soft and the blend them - healthier refried beans and pretty easy to get down (though don't go crazy they are still thick). i know others have addressed the hair loss before and I'm sorry abbout that - i'm sure that sucks. I hope you get some good advice/relief with that. lastly my favorite protein shakes are EAS myoplex lite - they ae a bit higher in protein than slimfast and you can mix with milk or Water. The premixed ones are not as good so less convenient than slimfast - you need the blender but the choc and vanilla - killer and tropical flavors really good too. Take care, mary

Well, there are many phases post-op: Clear liquids Protein drinks Purees Soft foods Real foods Early weight loss Later weight loss Maintenance And surgeons' eating programs for their patients vary more than you would believe. Some people are on liquids for a week, others are on liquids for four weeks. It's crrrrrazy! FYI, I averaged 800 calories (and at least 60 grams of protein) for months 1-4. After the first month I ate a lot of chicken, green, red and yellow veggies, skim milk, Greek yogurt and cheeses. I gradually added some non-starchy fruit (berries, oranges, mangoes) and the occasional low-cal, high-Fiber, high-protein piece of toast. In months 5-6 I bumped up to an average daily calorie count of 1,000 and 75-80 grams of protein. Ate more of the above-listed foods and started adding whole grains (brown rice, a little more bread, quinoa). In months 7-8 I raised my daily cals to 1,200 and protein grams to 100. I was able to eat more colored veggies and ate a little more whole grains. I started drinking 4 ounces of wine at night many nights. During all this time I avoided like hell the "slider foods" -- highly processed, high-carb foods that have little nutrition value and just make you crave more of them -- foods like chips, Cookies, crackers, ice cream, cake, etc. I also never drank juices or sweetened drinks of any kind. Now that I'm on maintenance, I average 1700 calories/day -- mostly quite nutritious food (see above). But on the weekends I eat some dark chocolate, low-calorie ice cream and extra wine. But not all at the same time and moderate amounts. That's how I am making maintenance work for me. Others have other plans that work for them. I've lost 95 pounds. I reached goal (150 pounds) 8.5 pounds post-op. I'm now 10 pounds below that and holding steady.

Wanting a chewy chocolate protein bar
Maggie1955 replied to BINABINA25's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At 12 days out my plan allowed me to have low-fat cottage cheese, yogurt, unsweetened applesauce, low sugar oatmeal, low fat string cheese or Babybel cheese, tuna salad, and chili. Surely one of these foods will satisfy your food craving. -
Is it normal to be hungry? (5 days post-op) I admit physically I feel better than I have been. Yesterday was the first day I was able to consume 78g of protien (24oz liquid) and nothing else but about 32oz of H20. Today is the same, except I know I'm taking larger sips at a time (maybe a 1/2 tsp?) and I was able to finish the 8 oz protei:confused:n drink in less than a 1/2 hour. Oh yeah, I even had a lowfat yogurt! I think I'm ready for the "mushies" but don't know what to start with. Any suggestions???:scared:

Eating Hurts - Any Tips?
omrhsn replied to TheLosingGame's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with the others. The best advice that my sister (who had her surgery three weeks before mine) gave me was to chew, chew and chew some more. Take your time and stop eating if it starts to hurt. You will learn your limits as you go. I found that black pepper was the culprit in my case and I stopped adding it to my food until 3 months after the surgery. Chicken, meat and eggs were particularly difficult for me. Yogurt (low fat) was my go to food. Also try to avoid drinking water for at least half an hour after you eat. It will be difficult at first but it will get better. Hang in there! -
I've tried chobanni plain Greek yogurt it has 6 grams of sugar and it has 18 gram of protein ... It's kinda of tart ... So I add I Splenda and sprinkle some cinnamon and it's delicious to me ...❤️

Greek Yogurt
deedadumble replied to TheRealMeIsHere!'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yoplait has a new apple pie flavor Greek yogurt. It is yummy! 100 cal, 8g sugar, and 12g protein. -
I've slowly added carbs like brown rice, wheat pasta, 1/2 sandwiches for lunch with wheat bread or pita's instead of just deli meat with cheese. I add a couple of tablespoons of low sugar/organic granola to my greek yogurt. LKIttle things like that. I've never done no fat, low fat so that isn't an option for me, but if you've eliminated that, you may want to increase that a bit.

For me nothing is any different... same protein shake, yogurt, salad with grilled chicken etc

New Month, and new goals! This month, I WILL get back to the gym, not tomorrow, but TODAY. I have got to get back to exercising!!!!! On a good note, we had our District Convention (religion) this weekend - three day, and I ate great! I packed my lunch everyday and had hummus and carrot sticks, very filling. I would also throw in a yogurt or piece of fruit. Dinner consited of grilled, or smoked chicken. yum. When I left (Thursday I was at 159, this morning I am at 161). But my body bounces around until it decides what weight it wants to stay at. Also, traveling always makes me hold more fluid. I am upping my water today, and we'll see how tonights weigh in at weight watchers goes. I can't believe I'm getting so close to goal!!!!

Oh yeah, its on! I was up at 5 am and working out at the gym by 5:20 am this morning. Now, let me tell you, I was sooooo tired and didn't want to get up, after all I was at the gym until after 10:00 pm last night. But I knew that I would not be able to go tonight - so I forced myself up. I'm glad I did it! First of all, I had a great workout last night, it lasted 2 hours, I did 60 min on elliptical and 60 min with weights, working my lower body. This morning was pure cardio - did 45 min on the elliptical. Tomorrow, I'm planning on another 2 hours at the gym, planning on doing 60 min of cardio and 60 min of weights (working the upper body) Today's menu: 8:00 am - coffee w/cream 2 boiled eggs & 2 slices of thin bacon (290 cal) 11:00 - protein shake made with skim milk (200 cal) 2:00 - Tuna & broccoli (180 cal) 4:30 - yogurt, banana (160 cal) 6:00 - carrots & hummus (100 cal) 9:00 - Weight watchers snack - (140 cal) As you can see, I'm eating quite often, just small meals. Trying to blast my matabolism by eating every 2 to 3 hours. I also retook my measurements last night, and I did not weigh this morning. I put the scales up. I am avoiding the scales until 12/14/09. A two week progress check. I will re-measure and weigh at that time to see how I'm doing. Okay, I'm off to work..............
