Dietician Stuff...help me not be a jerk...

Keto was very successful for me pre-op last year. But low fat, low carb is the new life. Your body and metabolism will completely change post-op. Give it a chance. Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app -
February 2019 weight loss buds
EmzBee replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I guess I shouldn't call it 'liquid', but 'pre-op' instead. Over here we follow the intense level of Optifast, which does allow for 2 cups of veg and any 3 optifast products (shakes, soups, bars, desserts). First two days were hard -- mainly due to headaches in the early evenings -- but I'm on day 3 now and I think I'm over the 'keto flu' stage, thank goodness! 2.2kgs (close to 5 pounds) gone in 2 days. Gotta be happy with that! =D Hope everyone's getting excited! I think my next prep step is to start timing water consumption, taking small sips instead of chugging like I usually do. So nervous I'll muck something up by downing a glass of water too quick after surgery... -
nutrition requirements for g-sleeve pts
RickM replied to vjs's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Initially, it is the typical bariatric diet that's protein first and then whatever else fits and fits with whatever specific diet a patient may be on or prefer. Many do one of the popular commercial type diets like Atkins, paleo or keto, but that's a preference for them rather than a physiological necessity. I'm 7-8 years out and just eat a fairly basic balanced diet - some meat and dairy, whole grains, lots of fruits and veggies and the occasional junky no-no; in short, a little bit of everything, not too much of anything. My wife is fairly similar being 13-14 years out on a DS, though she also puts in a daily smoothie that incorporates a lot of her supplementary potassium and calcium. -
Jan. 12th: How I eat now: Sugar. Nah. Stevia Cereal and milk. Nope. Yogurt and granola is bae. Sandwiches. Ha! Lettuce wraps or ryvita crispbread open-face sandwich Salads galore, vegetables abound, tea love, coffee plays (on repeat with protein shakes as creamer or half and half sometimes) Most animal protein consumption still rare, mostly fish I β€ legumes and nuts I β€ spring waters, the better... The better lol. Sometimes I add stur or true lemon water enhancers to tolerate low class water... The struggle is real y'all Splurging when I feel like but honestly if it's says diabetic, Keto or protein in the label lol

2 Years Post OP and struggling
Nayro827 replied to Nayro827's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you Steve! I think you're right. I know what I have to do, I just need to get my a$$ in gear and do it. I'm going to try the pouch reset thing first to get my head back in that mindset and then move onto keto from there. Good luck on your journey! It seems like you're already doing great!! -
2 Years Post OP and struggling

Start today! Procrastination, giving up and excuses will not burn calories or help you lose weight. Give yourself some tough. Love you don't want a small gain to turn into a large gain. Join a weight loss challenge to keep you on track. Some on this site or google them. If your not logging your food. Get back in the habit again. You have lost the weight before you can do it again. Years out, we can get a bit complacent or slip back into old behaviors. I'm four years out I've also had to lose a regain. It's work. It's the same work we put in our first year. It may mean overcoming some mental battles to get back into your weight loss mojo. Pouch reset or real food? Some people can go back to liquids and progress in food stages. Shakes never make me feel satisfied. If liquids are too restrictive for you, Choose a whole/real food diet that you can be consistent with. If you can't consume your weight loss calorie/macro goals, spread them out to five to six small meals. Log your food. Accept the you will feel crappy for a bit as you detox. Get temptations out of your house. Keep health sweet and salty options on hand. (IDK much about keto. I'm sure others can give you better options) Examples that I use Sweet: fruit, can dip it in sugar free chocolate or caramel syrup. Salty: I make chicken fajitas without a tortilla or eat jerky. The best workout is the one you will be consistent with. A trainer or on your own with a gym membership. Whatever works for you. -
2 Years Post OP and struggling

I think you already know many of the answers to your questions. You got out of your healthy rhythm and need to find the motivation to get back on track. I would suggest you make an appointment with the nutritionist at your surgeon's practice to discuss what's going on with your weight loss. You don't want to let it go for too long. If you think working with a personal trainer will get you motivated, go for it! Weight is lost in the kitchen, not the gym--but, working out can be a good motivator for eating healthy. Also, you can definitely do Keto after bariatric surgery. I am only 3 weeks out and I am essentially doing keto. Obviously, I am eating more protein and my macro doesn't look exactly like the ideal Keto macro, but I cut my carb intake to less than 20g of net carbs per day. I am getting my 100g + of protein a day and the rest of my calories are from healthy fats like avocado. It's been enough to put me into a state of ketosis and I think it's helping me along the way. Plus, I am very happy with the foods I am eating. For me, this is a sustainable lifestyle. If you're a carb addict, it can be hard to give up those carbs--it takes about 4 days to get through the "withdrawal" and even a little longer with keto, but it's totally doable. You can definitely do it... think about how you were able to handle the pre-op liquid diet. Keto is way easier than that!!! -
Hello everyone! Hope you are all well on your weight loss journey. I had VSG in September 2016 and it was the best thing I have ever done in my life. I went from 300 lbs to 199 a year later. After my surgery I was very committed to working out 4-5 times a week, and eating the appropriate amounts thanks to the restriction and not feeling the hunger. However, I am now 2 years post surgery and I am struggling. I stopped weighing myself regularly and was shocked to see I am at 217 lbs. My clothes feel tighter, my body looks a little looser (since I am not working out regularly as I used to) and although my restriction is still there, I am having trouble telling myself to stop when I should, while eating. I did not have surgery just to gain weight and go back to the eating habits that put me here in the first place. Eating has always made me really happy and although I have changed my relationship with food, I feel some of those unhealthy behaviors creeping back up, like: -Eating when Im already full -craving sweets and carbs - emotional eating/ eating as a reward I still do not eat anywhere close to what I used to, but I am struggling to get back on track. I am not sure how to go about it. I've thought about starting keto, which is similar to what I was doing post op anyway, but Im not even sure Id be able to eat all that food in one sitting. Im not really sure how to move forward. I've read about the pouch reset- is that tried and true? And, I would really like to get the sugar and carb cravings under control and not indulge whatsoever. I feel like i have been craving sweets and indulging more than I ever have in my life. I know 15 lbs may not seem like a lot to some people, but it is a huge deal to me. I've also looked at pictures from last year vs this year, and my body is definitely not as small, or toned or cut. I was lucky enough not to have any loose skin and actually toned up when working out so...do i just go back to protein shakes, cut my meals in half and work out 4-5 times a week like post op? How do I kick the carb/sugar cravings? Is there a replacement that would fulfill the craving without the fat etc? Do I invest in a personal trainer so I can commit to this and get my ass in gear? I am really at a loss- I feel like I don't know where to start. And for someone who has been overweight most of their life, this is really getting me down. Any advice or words of wisdom you can send my way, would be so greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

Weight loss stall, holiday gain - KETO?
miss_smiles posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know there are a bunch of posts already about Keto from last year, however they are really all over the place. Has anyone done Keto, OR a low carb diet that made them get out of a stall, and lose weight after that? I had gastric bypass in May, and only lost 40 pounds total. I am in desperate need of a jump start. I was thinking of doing the protein shake liquid diet to jump start weight loss for 3 days, and then start a low carb/keto diet. Anyone have suggestions, or any experience with this? Thanks in advance! -
I see my doctor today and yes it's I'm in ketosis he said this is normal it's a water retention there's something called a keto whoosh but he said here in another couple weeks if that doesn't work then I can try and do a reset

Keto works great with the sleeve, but there are different ways of doing the keto diet and a lot of them are not good for us. The theory in keto is to have a high fat, low carb and moderate protein diet. The typical keto macro doesn't work for sleevers since we need a higher protein diet. Also, you do keto without adding in all the silly stuff like bacon and other stuff loaded with saturated fats and processed through factories. Stick to things like avocado, fish, lentils, beans (high in protein and fiber), green veggies etc. You can definitely achieve ketosis with a high protein, low carb, moderate fat diet and reap all the health benefits.

Need Advice for My Family

Yessss! Now that you mention that I remember her telling me once before..."Well, you're not 600 lbs, you don't need that kind of surgery, do you?" I'm the most overweight person in my entire family. Everyone else is naturally skin and bones. I'm approaching 40, never known what "skinny"/healthy weight feels like and I know that if I don't make an impactful change now, it'll progressively get more difficult to manage as I get older and approach menopause. When I was 28-29, I dropped about 100lbs on my own in about 9mo. by just eating like a person that had Lap-Band. Gained it all back after a pregnancy. Tried the same approach at my current a few years ago and got fatter! I'm like whoa...ok...this is nuts. Tried keto for 2 years, lost 45lb then got stuck. Then boom, my employer changes insurance plans that covers bariatric...things happen for a reason! There's no way I'm turning back now. You said "They have a hard time untethering their view from the individual in front of them who might be fat, but is coping."...that really makes sense. Thanks so much for your help with perspective. -
1 week to go and feeling slightly lost
FluffyChix replied to elcee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats on your surgery. It will be here before you know it!! Wooot!! So clean eating...I'd TOTALLY drop all white things (sugar, rice, potatoes, pasta, carby breads) and caffeine/diet drinks. I would rather have a week of misery now before I deal with pain than doing it all at the same time. I'd do keto/low carb. I probably would have started that 3 weeks ago, but you can still make a difference in 1 week. Good luck girl!!! -

1 week to go and feeling slightly lost
ummyasmin replied to elcee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds pretty good - I'd go completely keto (no sugar, carbs) a couple of days before the surgery because depleting the liver of sugar stores is what makes it flexible and easier for the surgeon. But other than that sounds good. Good luck hon!! -
Doreen0716, I completely understand. I will be a year out on the 19th of this month and I've been at a stall for 3 months as well. I try not to let it get the better of me because praise God we've come a long way from where we were. I'm down 70 pounds trying to loose the last 10 but it's a serious challenge. I workout and I try not to consume over 1000 calories. I'm going to try to reset my sleeve/body by starting over on the liquid diet and go from there. So maybe that could be a start for you also. I see alot people are doing the keto diet that had the sleeve, so maybe try a diet plan that's fit for you. But whatever the case dont get frustrated re evaluate and keep pressing. I think the process has just slowed for us all after so many months, to me it seems like when i hit the 9 month mark it slowed big time. But keep us posted on your progress.

UPDATE: Yep, I was definitely overthinking things The dietician was so nice and very helpful. We talked for a good hour and a half and the best part is, she's down with keto! She said her main focus right now is to get me prepared for life after surgery like working on weaning off caffeine and mindful eating. Also, these dietician visits are free and unlimited even after surgery which is flippin' great! My mind is at ease now -
The holidays were hard but back at it on 1/2. Getting ready to hit the one year mark and would like to hit onderland. I started at 314 and currently sitting at 219. A Keto approach always gets me going I just hope I continue going down

I donβt feel much different!
DG725 replied to KatiT47's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Okay so you and I are having a similar experience and I have to say I have been feeling super frustrated because I see people losing 40 pounds in a month and I am closer to 20 3 months out....but, I recently saw my nutritionist and she said I am drinking too much water (which I didnt even know was a possibility?) But she told me to me very strict about not xri king before or after eating for an hour....the other thing she mentioned was super important...I had been doing a keto diet pre-surgery and it was really helpful and working! But, with my new tummy, I can't stay eating the same level of fat....so, I need to watch calories, cut out that cheese I had been ingesting....I have been working out, eating healthy....taking my vitamins....but, I am taking what she said into consideration and trying my best to lower my fat, increase my protein and not drink before or after meals...and I lost 5 pounds since seeing her....but, and I know this is just supposed to be a tool and not a miracle...I have worked really hard to lose each and every pound...oh and I am going bald, not very happy about that...sigh... Keto Diet with weight loss surgery - What are your thoughts about it?

I'm not "hard core". LOL, see? I said so in that statement. I don't claim "keto". I am LC. We just got one for Christmas but I haven't wanted to blow into it until I'm sure I'm over my cold. Those levels are very hard to maintain. -

Do you use a blood meter to check your ketone level by chance? I'm curious what hardcore ketosis looks like post-op vs. pre-op just eating keto. Currently I keep my ketones at about 1.7 - 2.0 mmol and it is VERY hard to keep this up. To measure blood ketones I have a KetoMojo meter. -

I am not in Ketosis. All my Jell-O and popsicles have sugar in them and I was eating cream of potato soup just to make sure I stayed out of it. I drink a strawberry Snapple everyday as well and have since surgery. Also I should say I have left over Keto Strip that you pee on just to make sure!
