I was banded five days ago, this morning as per my surgeons directions I had some thinned yogurt with protein sprinkled on tops. Since then I've had a thick slimy feeling at the back of my throat, What did I do? How do I fix it? Thoughts are most appreciated/

neenz, uh no I've never heard that and I have done just fine with being on nights, (I could never work days anyways since I HATE getting up early) you just find a way to make it work for you. Here's my meals: 6pm egg with salsa and some refried beans. 1030pm: either chicken and veggies or maybe some soup and almonds or a piece of ezikial bread toasted with almond butter. 5am: greek yogurt, strawberries and kashi. 9am: usually some fruit or beans again, although sometimes I do go for breakfast with my peeps, rarely, then I usually have some kind of egg. My drinks at work are a soy caramel triple shot machitto and lemon water. It's worked well for me: I am currently in a size 10 comfortable and medium scrubs, I can fit in the smalls but would like to lose another 15 or so lbs before I venture out in them. I started out in a really tight 16, I should have been in an 18 or probably 20 and my scrubs were xl's. Maybe my loss rate has been a bit slower than others but part of that is my choice since I do not think it is really healthy to drop loads so quickly, also I prefer to keep my band on the looser end of things, less risk of slippage etc, I don't think it's healthy when people say I ate 3 teensy bites and a french fry and then I was pb'ing, that's not a normal way to eat to sustain life in the long term (don't attack me everyone for saying that) I eat about 1/2cup at a time and I've lost just fine. Hope that helps!

How should I prepare?
54Shirley replied to BaileyRose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Get a Pill splitter/crusher for your pain meds, or if you take meds, ask your Doc can you get them in liquid form. Mine did that for me. Jell -o, Sugar Free Pudding, Light Yogurt, Soups (NOTHING HEAVY ! LOOK FOR SOUPS IN A BOX, I FOUND IT IN THE ORGANIC AREA BUT EVERY PLACE IS DIFFERENT. IF YOU FIND A "RED PEPPER SOUP", YOU FOUND THE RITE SOUPS. ALSO THAT IS FANTASTIC ! ! ! I bought the Mushroom, and Red Pepper Soup., Protein Drinks, Pop cycles, and what ever is in liquid form, that you like. -
"I think my biggest problem will be when I go back to work next week. What will I eat for lunch? In the past, I would just hit a fast food place or Subway." I was in the same boat as you. KFC 6 piece dinner, Subway Cold Cut Combo: foot long of course (with chips and bucket of soda), a whole Papa John's medium pizza with pepperoni, extra-cheese, and some onions and peppers for being healthy. Oh, and I could always go for Mickey D's. Now, I pack Breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack and bring it to work every day, and I rarely deviate. Here is a typical sample: Breakfast (may take a couple of hours to eat all of this): 1 Yogurt 1 Hard Boiled Egg 1 coffee 1 Bottle of Water with Crystal Light 1 small can Diet Red Bull Lunch: Protein shake sugar free pudding 1 bottle of water with crystal light Afternoon Snack: Muscle Milk - Protein Pudding Bottle of water with Crystal light 1 coffee (long ride home) Dinner can be Soup or tuna or any of a myriad of other protein rich foods. I hope this helps.

The yogurt is the Dannon Light & Fit. The fruit is blended, so you do not have to worry about being stuck. However, once you are optimally filled, you cannot eat it too quickly, or you will get that uncomfortable, "Oh this is going to take a while to get down" feel.

I really liked Unjury protein. (google it) It doesn't have the additives the others have. You can add it to stuff you can tolerate. Like chicken broth, fruit juice, yogurt smoothies. They have an unflavored version. I think that would be your best bet. You need to have good communication with your Dr and his support staff. Let your Dr know about the problems. Maybe he has suggestions. Hang in there. Amanda : )

Non Fat, Low In Sugar Yogurt
AliveAgain replied to 1footinfrontoftheother's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Unflavored, non-fat, Greek Yogurt is best. Depending on your doctor's guidelines, you can add your own level of sweetness later with 4-6 blueberries OR raspberries. -
@Monikareigh - You are about where I was 13 months ago. At the end of March/beginning of April 2016, I was 271.5 and 5'3". Today, I'm 190 and headed to 150. I feel like a new person. I'm going to offer some tips from my journey: Protein - is what is going to keep you from getting hungry. Try to eat 90-100 grams of protein a day. Carbs - limit your carbs, but don't cut them completely. While you are "waiting" for your appointment, do something like Atkins. I start each day with a protein shake - 1 cup coconut milk, 1 scoop protein powder and about 1 cup of frozen fruit. Throw it in the blender. Its under 200 calories about 25 grams of protein and keeps me full til lunch. Oikos Triple Zero yogurt is a life saver -- about 120 calories in a cup and 15 grams of protein. If you do have pasta - use the Barilla high protein pasta - it's in the yellow box and tastes really good. And start moving -- walk for 1/2 hour a day (around the block, at the mall, at a gym) - and track all your food. I like My Fitness Pal, but there are plenty of other trackers out there. You've got this girl. Best of Luck!

Professional Pics Of Me At Goal! A Present To Myself!
Forensikchic replied to Forensikchic's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Thanks everyone! Advise for newbies.....Follow the instructions from your surgeon. You have a certain window of opportunity and you can fall off the wagon (slightly) later...Now is the time to seize the moment. Remeber to keep your carbs low and your protein high! It pays off! When you get to mainenance, you can up your carbs some then so you will settle out. You will always have to keep protein high though so might was well get used to that and find high protein things you LIKE> I dont like some things like yogurt and eggs. I wont eat it and the beauty is I dont have too. I can find things that I like and tailor it to me! You can too! Focus on Protein! That doughnut can wait til maintenance! I do eat a cookie about 5 nights a week with a little milk to satisfy my craving for sweets. It works for me and its a cookie, not a bag of cookies, like before. Thats my secret to being satisfied. If we have cake or doughnuts at work, its rare, so I will partake a little and thats okay because its not weekly or even monthly.. its a rare occasion and sweets are ok as long as its not overboard. I am carb sensitive so I have to build the cookie into my plan for the day, so I dont go over my carbs.. I use the 70/70 rule.. no more than 70 carbs and no less than 70 protein. HTH. -
Help........slime
♥LovetheNewMe♥ replied to Isaacsmomma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know it may sound weird but the yogurt may have been to thick, I had trouble with textures in the beginning and even though I had no fluid in my band I had some trouble swallowing some thicker foods. There is swelling in the beginning and some people it tales a little longer to tolerate foods that are thicker than clear, maybe back down to protein shakes and some cream soups with a little unflavored protein in them. In the beginning I did about 1 -2 oz of liquids every 1-2 hours for a few days. It does get easier, if you keep having the same problem call your surgeon and let them know. Hope you feel better, good luck. -

Anyone Else In The 350+ Pre-Op Weight Range?
Chicago1962 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I weighted 397 when I finally got approved for surgery. I lost 30 pounds pre-op eating two shakes, some lite yogurt, and a McDonald’s southwest grilled chicken salad a day. I had my surgery on 6/12/12. It has now been just over three months and I have lost an additional 56 pounds - so 86 in all. I had various goals that meant a lot to me over the past three months. One was getting under 350. One was getting under 340 which is what I weighed when my mom died 19 years ago. Then it was getting under 320. Now it's getting to 307 which will mean 90 pounds lost. My other goals have revolved around movement. When I started this process I had to illegally park in the visitor parking at work each day. I simply could not walk from the parking lot - and could barely walk from the close-up visitor spots. I now park as far out in the parking lot as possible and even walk around the parameter of the very large parking lot several days per week at lunch. This has been HUGE for me. I cannot really see much difference in my body yet. 311 is still a very heavy body. But I can sit in a booth now. I have moved my car seat up several times. I no longer need my seatbelt extender. I can sit in outdoor plastic chairs with arms. My clothes are falling off me. My rings are too big. My bangle bracelets fit again. And my feet don't hurt nearly as much as they used to. I think I am craving some connections with people who are over 350+ because so many of the stories I read here are about people who weigh so much less. I realize we are all on the same journey - but those of us in the "super morbidly obese" category have a much longer road ahead - and I for one want to walk that road with some of you who know just what I'm facing. I'd like to hear your stories - support you - cry and laugh with you - and seriously do this journey together!!! Amy in Chicago -
I mix Isopure protein powder (alpine punch flavored) with unflavored greek yogurt. I tried the Isopure with water or milk and I didn't like it. The greek yogurt ads enough tartness to make in taste OK.

I started mushies on Friday and this weekend I ate canned venison, pizza, broiled cod, cheese and venison sausage. I don't think of these as mushies. Had no problems eating them though. I drank 5 glasses of wine on Saturday night at party with past co-workers. I know that wasn't smart. Also cals are way up to about 1400 day. Is this acceptable? What are mushies? Could I have damaged anything? I don't think so, and feel good. What should one be consuming 2 weeks after surgery? As far as streghting my pouch shouldn't I have thrown up because of over stuffing? Did I over stuff? Any advice please Bearbelly

The amount of food after lap-band
Chickie replied to christi217's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was about 6 months post op when I gave up meat. No, I don't eat any fish, but I do eat eggs, cheese and drink milk (I would be a real sad panda if I had to give up cheese and milk! let me tell you!) You might be onto something there. I think the lifestyle is different out here. I like to think we are more focused on health, but I don't know how true that is anymore. We seem to be developing a real McCulture down here. While the obesity epidemic is becoming just that, and epidemic and not just a scare tactic, our nation as a whole isn't quite as overweight as some other western countries (we come in as the 21st fattest country in the world according to Forbes). Personally, when I use the word diet, I use it to describe the way I eat. "My diet consists of" type thing Vs "I am going on a diet to shift 5lbs" It doesn't mean the same thing to me as it does to the majority of people. I can eat 3 fairly large meals a day, and be totally satisfied with what I am eating. I elect to eat 2 or 3 Snacks during the day. Today, I was super busy with my MIL and what I ate today probably isn't the best example of how I eat normally, but here it is; Breakky was a yogurt, a lady finger banana and a granola bar (Crunchola, Blueberry for the Aussies, they really are very yummy) Snack was a short black, handful of nuts and a half an apple (When I packed DS lunch, I packed this for myself, knowing I would be out for morning tea). Lunch was a (brought) roasted pumpkin, baby spinach and chickpea salad, again a short black and a small bit of MIL's banana bread (she tries to feed me, although I eat more than she does LOL) Snack was a skinny latte, about 6 good sized carrot sticks dipped in some cream cheese and hummus. dinner was spinach and fetta cannelloni with home made Pasta sauce, and veggies. Like I said, less than stellar today, and likely a lot more than the average bandster eats. -
The amount of food after lap-band
IndioGirl55 replied to christi217's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doc allows healthy Snacks - low fat string cheese - sf yogurt - sf fudgecicles - fruit - sf popcicles - Hasn't your doc given you a meal plan with food to eat and avoid - I met with a nutristionist prior to being banded - the gave me list of allt he foods I should eat and foods to stay away from... I am too tired - it's 9:12 and 5 comes early - I am going to bed - so check out the food thread you will find healthy food choices there... Sorry - but worked out with trainer today and i am beat... -
I'd check with my doc. It's each clinics differing opinion on whats right. For me it was NO sugar for 10 days (only sugar free yogurt and cottage cheese), others have Protein drinks for 2 weeks..etc. Check with your clinic theyll tell you whats right

Are all post op diets different?
theantichick replied to Mnicole's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Different surgeons have different protocols, and I'll second and third what other people have said: if you trust your doc to operate, follow their protocols. It's unlikely your doc is going to have you eating purees the day of or after surgery, so even if you go through the phases faster than others, you still kinda do them. For instance. My doc had me on clear liquids the afternoon of the surgery. If I tolerated them (which I did) she wanted Protein Shakes tested the day after (day 2). She doesn't like to send people home until she knows they're able to keep fluids and protein shakes down. So I was technically on clear liquids for about 14 hours, then advanced to full liquids in the form of protein shakes. Interesting note: medically speaking, "full liquids" includes a bunch of things that aren't actually liquid. Yogurt, puddings, jellos, etc. are frequently included in a "full liquid" diet. Which makes it seem like "full liquids" isn't a good term, but it's the one used medically. My doc keeps us on full liquids (including sf pudding, yogurt, sf Jello, etc.) until our 14 day checkup, then moves us to the "soft foods" phase. Which seems to skip purees, mushies, what have you. But her instructions are to start with pureed type foods and advance as tolerated up to anything that's considered "soft" and moist (she had a list, included eggs, shredded chicken, tuna, etc.). So she's not really "skipping" those phases, just allowing the patient to advance as tolerated. Then at the 1 month checkup, I was cleared for pretty much anything, using the same "advance as tolerated" process. Start with the easier to chew/digest food and work up. So the answer to your question is yes, but... -
What do you eat on the 3rd week after surgery ?
TiredOfMyself replied to amber.bgoya's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm still on full liquids. Cottage cheese, cream soups, applesauce, I am so tired of it all. I hate yogurt and Protein shakes so I don't do them. -
It sounds like you really need to step back and actually track what you are eating. You may be eating far more (or less) than you should. How do you get enough Protein, well for Breakfast there is always eggs, Greek Yogurt, Protein Drink, etc. For lunch some chicken salad (w/ ff or lowfat mayo), tuna salad, salad with chicken, ham or some meat/protein in it, grilled chicken, etc. dinner, a piece of grilled salmon, chicken or other meat. Make sure you are eating your protein first. Snack during the day of a lowfat cheese stick or cottage cheese (I like it with a peach slice). I know you have been banded for a while but I have heard from others that sometimes after a while you kind of forget what the guidelines are so I would try to stick w/ 1000-1200 calories, no more than a cup of food per meal, and 60+ grams of protein per day. You may be surprised where protein hides. Even a piece of toast has protein. Good luck!

Second Stage of Post-Op Diet...Weightloss Journey
JazzyJess20 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey all! Last Tuesday, I reached the beginning of the Phase 2 diet. I've been told that I can eat eggs (boiled, scrambled), non-fat yogurt, non-fat jello (I'm honestly not sure if that includes the gelatin and pudding...any suggestions?); cottage cheese; pureed Lentil soup; cooked and canned vegetables and fruit; applesauce; mashed avocado; squash soup; and mashed bananas. I don't eat Squash and Bananas as I've always hated the taste. Did anyone else find this phase a bit, well, confusing? I legitimately can only eat a few spoonfuls of any of this at any one time. For instance today, I have had about 3 or 4 mini-spoonfuls of yogurt, a cup of mandarin oranges in 100% juice, cottage cheese, and a few pieces of warmed sourdough bread. Yesterday, I attempted to eat scrambled eggs with a cauliflower thin and it did not go well I'm also having a very difficult time keeping up with the correct fluid intake. Quite frankly, I'm sick of water. And the sweetness of Crystal Light can become overwhelming after a while. Next week I can begin eating (or trying to eat) shrimp and crab legs. I'm actually really excited. Despite these little obstacles, I have lost 29 pounds since my surgery date on 3/23 I really was just looking for a place to vent and accept any suggestions/positive feedback if possible. -
Yogurt pretty much slides right through me these days. I consider it more liquid than food for my sleeve. However, you probably have a couple of factors that affect how full you feel. First, you're early post-op, so your sleeve is still numb and may not feel "full" yet. That early post-op, I knew I was full when my shoulder hurt, not because my sleeve said to quit eating. Because of that numbness, my nut said to always measure my food and to try to under-eat the sleeve. Second, you're still dealing with head hunger and acid issues. Talk to your doctor about taking some kind of acid reducer. I still take Tums daily (for calcium) because it works better with other meds I'm on. I also started taking an acid reducer at about 2-3 months post op and both help with the hunger urges. I was going to call it a hungry feeling, but it's not really a feeling anymore. Third, you're on liquids, even if it's full liquids. They do not give you the same restriction that you'll experience when you get to eat denser Protein. chicken, beef and fish will all fill you up faster than anything you're allowed right now. Good luck! This will be over soon!
