My port site was sore for the first 2-3 weeks. That is totally normal. It is also normal to have "buyers remorse", to not know if this was the right decision. But you have to look at the pros. I'm a month out and down 30lbs!!!! I have NEVER been able to loose weight well and now look!!!! WOW!!! The first few days to a week are tough, but you can get through it!!! We are all here for you. It really does get better at about day 3 or 4 post op. Keep us up to date on your progress! Congrats and welcome to band land!!! Kelli

The great question... how much to fill?
kll724 replied to nurseAMY11's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks Indiogirl and Jachut, You ladies are both my hero. I am 14 months out, and have reached goal after loosing 100 lbs. But, I still need to remind myself that this is a life style change. And, skinny people don't eat like fatty people. (Well, unless you have the motabolism of my d-i-l)! Anyway, I, also, eat of dessert plates. And, my husband is reminding me, now, that I have changed eating patterns. I am getting another 1/2cc unfill next week. I am down to 3cc now, but I am dropping too much weight for my face. I think that everyone is different, but, 8cc in a 10cc band is a lot, and you sound like you have good restriction, just that you are not sure of yourself, yet. Good luck, and have alittle self confidence, you are doing great in your weight loss journey. Karen (kll724) -

Post surgery weight gain
vlp1968 replied to Martha78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, the fluids for sure. I think they put saline in the iv, going to make you retain fluids. I wouldn't get on the scale everyday if I were you. When I was loosing I weighed in once a week and recorded it. I felt like the natural flucuations would drive me crazy. -
Thanks for the encouragement and support...I definitely needed it today, and it means a lot. It's most certainly a very frustrating setback, but it's one of the risks so what can ya do? I don't think the actual port gets anchored down, from what I understood they anchor the band to the stomach, but the port just sits under the skin. I was a little surprised too when he starting attempting to do the fill without anything to numb the area! It wouldn't have been too bad if it had been quick like it's supposed to be...but I will definitely remember to ask for it from now on! The whole situation sucks, but I'm trying not to let myself get too upset about it...I figure being upset won't change the situation or make it go away so what would the point be? Better to just accept it as one of those things that happen sometimes, even though it REALLY sucks, and just do what needs to be done to fix it and move forward. (These are the truths that I know, today I'm just focusing on making my mind believe them! I refuse to let myself throw a "why me" pity party...even though there have been moments today where that has been very tempting lol!) I believe the procedure is going to be done under general anesthesia, he said it's quick and even less invasive than the first surgery. Supposedly less pain, and maybe only out of work for that day. *fingers crossed* My surgeon DID say that while he is doing the procedure to flip the port back the right way, he WILL do a fill at the same time. At least that's one thing to look forward to about it!

Noticing A Change...
mnbsleeve replied to Reddi4change's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me it took almost 35 pounds before I started to really get comments.... but now! Even a 1 or 2 lbs loss and people ask: "are you losing weight? you look great" LOL I guess proportionally the weight loss is greater closer to goal... which is great because the loss slows down and we need the encouragement LOL But I remember going to my hair salon, after loosing close to 70 lbs (I see this gal every three weeks mind you) and one week I come in and she asks, "are you losing weight?" I cracked up! I had lost about 2 lbs. since I saw her last but like 70 overall. I though, yeah just a little bit! Funny how she noticed those two but not the other 68! :-) -

I am a weirdo.. every time they measure my height i am either 5'7 or 5'8 ... i am currently 8 weeks post op from the sleeve, but i had the band for years prior... so i have gotten to goal in the past ... I haven't weighed myself in a while, but i was last 209, but buildwise.... a size 14 (Australian) is loose fitting on me... i think in around 11lbs i should be able to squeeze into a 12. Yay me! -
big hugs to you sweetie, I can totally relate to you! I'm 1/2 native american indian and 1/2 german (go figure???) anyhow that makes me a really big boned, tall (6'0") person. . .my dad was 6'8 and weighed nearly 400 lbs and my german mom is 5'8 tall and about 200 lbs. . . at 12 years old i weighed 222 lbs (always the biggest girl anywhere) and at my heaviest i weighed 350 lbs and after i had my surgery and lost 150 lbs i don't have that much loose skin. I actually look 10 - 15 years younger . . . no wrinkles at all (and i'm 50) my daughter's friends asked her if I was her sister????? my daughter is 21. . . what a compliment that was. . . the only really loose skin i have is my apron, ahhhhh but it's nothing that a little duck tape couldn't help out! . . . you'll be ok hon, don't worry about it now. . just get your exercise in and do what your told to do and you'll be ok. . . the plastic surgeon told me that what is to be expected is to loose all your weight first, then maintain for about 1 year and then think about plastics because the skin usually shrinks back up some and what doesn't is then taken off. . . . good luck! Your going to do just fine!

Okay, now I have some questions and some concerns. I know very little about weight watchers. You mentioned being on a new programm that is carb based. Already that seems like a problem. I am not a carb hater and there are people on this forum who would faint at the idea of having yoghurt for Breakfast like I do. If WW is truely carb based then it needs to go. I find it odd that it is however; unless you are confusing their theory that veggies are almost a non food and are'nt considered calories at all (I'm simplifying I know) with being carb based. You mentioned having frozen diet meals. Again, not intrinsicly bad but yes they are high in carbs usually potato, Pasta, rice. You must focus on 3-4 Oz of Protein and then eat have say 3/4 cup of veggies. You mentioned meat being trigger for weight gain for you. Meat is not a intrinsically bad either (not looking to discuss the ethics of eating meat). 3 oz of grilled chicken no skin is a world away from boneless Buffalo chicken wings (fried, and the sauce's main ingredient is butter). It also sounds like you need to stop the 100 pack stuff. It's called the halo effect "It's only 100 calories so I can have dessert", or "It's 100 calories so I can have 2". If you have 1 a day for 35 days and don't burn off those calories it's still a 1 pound gain.

The first thing you need to do is establish what exactly you want. If you just want to flatten your chest and get rid of the "moobs", stick to cardio. Just run your ass off. Losing the fat will flatten the chest. If you want to try an back fill the left over skin with muscle, you are going to need to focus on building muscle. And not just the pectorals, your shoulders too. And that means using free weights. I know the machines are more comfortable and easier, but there is a price for that. Effectiveness. The king of chest building training is the bench. Ugh. I hate the bench but it has to be done. Whether you start with dumbells or the barbell doesn't matter really. I prefer dumbells, but there is little disputing that the barbell is better because if forces the arms to work in synchronicity. Just be conservative with the weights. Even now I start ever chest day with just the bar to warm up and establish my bar path in my head. Any training that involves the chest press requires that the shoulders be strong as well. So you are going to need to start training them as well. I have a post on here with some examples of shoulder exercises. Again, be conservative. This isn't a race, it's the rest of your life. Once your shoulders and chest are starting to show progress, then you can add dips into the mix. They are good for the lower part of the chest. Forget declines. Dips is what you want. Inclines are OK, I do them too, but it is because I enjoy them, not because they are a magic movement that causes huge growth. A better lift for the shoulders and upper chest at the same time is the standing press. That causes some growth! And one real quick note about the reverse grip bench. That is not a chest exercise, rather it is a triceps lift and the chest is ancillary at best. I don't care for it, but there is nothing wrong with it. I just want to make sure people know what it is really working. Oh, and the EZ-Curlbar Skullcrushers are great for the triceps and lats. Look that one up too. All of this is of course optional, you may do whatever works best for you. This is just what I have I researched and experienced. And I would say these are things you shouldn't attempt until you are hitting 100 grams of protein on a somewhat regular basis.

I Am So Beyond Frustrated...
disappointed29 replied to MandiMand's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am with you on that. I was banded on January 14. The first 2 weeks I lost 15lbs. Since then I have lost 1 lbs. I am so disappointed. I had a fill of 2cc on 2/18 and on 3/3. I am still feeling hungry. Why does it seem like this is working for everyone exept me. I expected to loose at least a pound a week. -
Do you have any problems with extra skin yet? My friends are freaking me out about it. I'm exercising and plan on continuing after my surgery

I have done my seminair my 18 mo supervised diet and all the other hoops. My insurance I called 5 times to verify coverage and read it in my handbook. I had my pre op with the dr and they told me they were sending stuff in that day and that was the 14th I think. I called my insurance a week later they didnt have I called Dr they said oh we are sending it today. I called a week later again insurance didnt have it. SO I called the Dr they said we sent it today-- I was getting a little frustrated but I thought "just be patient" So I called yesterday to find out if I am approved and they said I am denied that dh work put an exclusion on it as of NOV 1 they day they received my paper work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to appeal but I know it wont do any good I dont know who to be mad at the DR office or my dh work! I was so helpful that this was the tool to help me get healthy and be around to raise my kids-- I cant believe I was one day too late!!!!!!!!!! Anyone else have approval even though their was exclusions. I had 4 dr's write in saying I need this surgery. I think I will start a web site for self pays and we will all send 5 people $5. for the surg-- like a pyramid scam! Coarse you would have to have 3000 people do it for 5 people to get the surgery!!! Any ideas-- I tried everything and I cant loose weight! Jill PS I know I saw an appeal letter on some web site it was very good any idea where it is?? Jill

Seeing after losing over 100 lbs what I'm going to have to have done - My skin is actually bouncing back pretty good so far, but it won't after I lose another 100 lbs, I'm quite sure of that. So...my list for what's going to be done (hopefully all at the same time) 1. Put the "girls" back where they belong 2. Arms 3. Tummy tuck 4. Lower body lift I think all this combined is a "full" body lift. My insurance that i have now will pay for at least some of it - i know they pay for the "removal of excess skin after weight loss" and I know they pay for breast reductions, which I'll have along with the surgery (I don't ever gain or lose there - I've always had sizable boobs) So I'm saving now for the rest of the cost. Looking for an exceptional plastic surgeon here in Denver - don't really want to travel for this one, but I will if i can't find a doc I like

A 2 yr lapband and left with a fat bulge at waist
luluc replied to nkotowicz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i wouldn't suggest lipodisolve. my bf had this done last yr after her 4th kid, and the injections caused hard knotts under the skin - that still remain. after paying 5k for 10 treatments (she only had 2) , they were shut down (dallas, tx) - and there is an ongoing class action suit. i would try the medical necessity route first. check the plastic surgery forum - there have been a few that have had PS paid for by insurance. good luck!! -
The Girl Next Door has been banded..
bandelle replied to Thegirlnextdoor's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all, Congrats! I was banded on 10/6, so I'm a little ahead of you. I was not hungry for the first three or four days. After that, I got a little bit of an appetite, but a little Protein shake would satisfy me. I added a little Fiber powder to my shakes to avoid the constipation thing. As for being a bit loose, you have to remember, you're only taking in liquids and most likely have been for a week or more. You may also have a lactose issue, especially if you are making your shakes with milk. A lactose enzyme pill can help with that. Your appetite does come back, I am in bandster h-e-double toothpicks right now. I can't wait for my first fill. I was hoping to delay it until after the Thanksgiving holiday, but if my surgeon says I can have a fill tomorrow when I see her, I just may do that. -
The Girl Next Door has been banded..
sharnut replied to Thegirlnextdoor's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello - you almost are the girl next door, as I'm in Maine. I'm Sharon and was banded on 6/24/08 - it's been a wonderful experience and so glad that I've made this decision. When I started the pre-op diet I was 250.6 - this morning I was 210.6 - It's been a very slow process - that has become a journey. I've had 3 or 4 fills - my band holds 10cc's and I have 61/4 cc's in my band now. I could probably use some more restriction, but as long as I'm loosing and eating small amounts....I might hold off, as I don't want to overfill the band. Good luck!!!! -
I noticed the days I drop alot of weight I kind of feel washed out and tired. I had to up the carbs just a little. I was not eating barely any at first and that helped the energy level a little. What week after surgery are you at? If it is 4 or less give yourself a break - you just had MAJOR surgery. If you are tired it might be your body's way of saying slow down and rest a little. Just stay hydrated is the main goal of the first month. Good luck! The energy level does get MUCH better the more weight you loose. I am not out of breath and don't get the sugar drop tired feelings that I had when I was 50 lbs heavier.

I'm I Getting Good Restriction With My Gastric Sleeve?
jhope replied to CT Fats's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Hi there, I was intrigued about your progress, as I was once a merchant marine myself, Whew! Thats over. but along the lines of your protein thing...I would take a tiny food processor with me on the ship, slip in your pocket size, and when you can, process any lean meets at meals as a spread for dry toast. Lots of protein and healty and taste great. Kellogs makes protein Water, a little pricey, but beats loosing your hair. They come in 6 packs, and could be good in a pinch. You can get tempeh shrink wrapped and flavored in chinese food stores and some at the fresh food area of the grocery stores, and it has a mazillion times more protein than any meat. I like it. -
Questions for Post Ops who are willing to share
shedo82773 replied to ARCarnes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes A MILLON times over I would go for it all!! The Panni is the lower skin on the stomach. I was told by my Plastic surgeon that he would cut me down the center and pull everything around and get rid of the excess skin there also. He didn't do anything except remove my lower stomach skin made me a new belly button and the amazing thing was years before this I had my gallbladder removed and I had this large scar cut down the whole length of my side tummy. right under my breast. After my skin surgery the scar is WAY down almost to the top of my well I'm sure you get the picture. My skin is super tight thatn if I eat even a few bites after the full mark it hurts like the Dickins. Mainly if I lie down it feels like the skin is stretching. So if I was you I would get it all done. If only my Dr. had been truthful I would have paid for the rest. DANG HIM BTW he offered to do Lipo and a breast lift for $6,000. It made me think he was making more business for himself!! I guess we all have got to make a living!! -
I dont have pics sorry but I need the brachioplasty (surgery) each arm has about7-10 inces of loose skin- my docs think it is at least 5-15 lbs that I will/would loose- just saving money at this time for the procedure- then I will have before and after pics.... My arms don't really bother me- they bother others though- I am not afraid to go sleeveless or tank top etc... I am comfortable in my skin-

I finally called and made my first appointment with Dr. Singh. I attended his seminar late last summer, and I finally made the call. I kept thinking when it would be the right time, since the Dr. said its important to go through with the surgery when you don't have a lot of stress in your life. Probably and impossible thing, but I've made some changes to get rid of the stresses that I can. I'm totally nervous to go through with this. It's those little things....the "what if"s. That and I really hate throwing up, so I hope that I don't have that much of a problem post-op. My appointment is March 31, 2010. I want to loose at least 100 lbs. with this surgery. Hopefully the loss will help me gain my confidence and start to live again!

I love the weight loss, but between the wrinkles on my face, the hanging skin and my boobs looking like what I image a 90 year old's boob would look like this is getting a little gross! I have lost a cup size and that does not make me happy! Hubby liked the fun bags! (he is banded also so he is very understanding even though no excess skin on him...urrrrrrrrrrrrrrr:angry:) How is everyone else doing with this! I have about 100 pounds to go so I can't even image how much worse this is going to get and I never realized how the excess weight kept my face unwrinkled... What are you all doing to fight back! One thing I realize is I now understand why people have plastic surgery... I figure I will need about 30K worth to make me happy when this is all done:thumbup: Chime in... I would love to hear all my sista's stories so I no I am not alone in this irony of losing weight feeling great and the flip side of what the hell is happening to my body!

Hi there, I am 4 weeks 3 days out from surgery and I am on mushies at the moment, but am able to tolerate a fair bit which has me a little concerned! I am able to eat scrambled eggs no problem at all, and what I think, quite an amount, probably over half cup, and I am also eating mince o.k, and last night tried some chicken and mashed potato. I have eaten a peach (with no skin) and that was fine, and also when we were out and I was hungry, tolerated fine about 5 french fries. I am starting to worry that I am eating too much!.. Oh I can also drink quite a bit!! I have had soda with no problems, and juice but mainly stick to water!. Am I am going too fast, but it is causing me no problems!! Do I worry, is this eating pattern normal at this stage? I am still losing weight which is great though :-) !!
