    Where You Ever A Naysayer?

I am that girl, I alwaysss said, "why would they take the easy way out, that's not for me, blah blah blah", now here I am thirty hours from my surgery thinking, why didn't I do this years ago? I couldnt even fast the two weeks before because of the hunger pains do for people to say," why don't you eat like you have the surgery"? I can now say, " well because I don't have a tiny stomach therefore I would suffer for Hunger pains daily"!!! People are ignorant as I was for too long, now I know this surgery is for me and I will be a happier and healthier person and I busted my ass to get there!!!! Keep in mind that when WLS became popular, many people who clearly weren't even obese did get surgery for cosmetic reasons and for fast results this is why most insurances are so strict now!!!
  2. My dad had his WLS 4 weeks ago and as I preceded him two months earlier he usually comes to me first with his questions. My doc told me that 1000 cals daily is a good amount to have and to shoot for 80 g of protein ( which I have no prob getting). My Dad is wondering what the typical amount of calories per day is for the men who have had this surgery. So far he is doing very well but I am sure he is still at the point where he is eating much fewer calories than he will once his stomach is healed up.

    I Got A Surgery Date, September 18Th!

Thanks! It has already started to blur together- sleep study, weight checks, psych visits, etc... Will be nice to get to go a few weeks with no doctors at all. After all, life keeps going on around me. Isn't that why I'm doing this? If all goes well, I should lose most of my weight by spring next year. I can't wait for swimming, fishing, hiking, and camping again!

    1 week pre op diet

I had to do a 2 week pre-op diet and by the 2nd week I was famished! Basically a starvation liquid diet without the appetite suppressing benefits of surgery, But it's important and will jump start your weight loss, shrink your liver, and get you used to what you will be doing for a couple of weeks post op. I am now 2 weeks post op and still on the same thing and I am hungry now! It's been 4 weeks of fluids and protein supplements. I see my doctor tomorrow and I will have my first soft protein food tomorrow for dinner !!!! Yippee! Can hardly wait. The pre-op diet is the first stage of your new lifestyle. Embrace it! You are on your way to becoming the new you!

Am I Able To Do This?

My surgeon and NUT told me to do liquid for 4 weeks following surgery. After reading this board, I know now that they were being conservative, but they really wanted my stomach to heal properly. Whatever...each surgeon seems different. Blah. But I did do it. I had only liquid for 4 weeks. I gritted my teeth the whole time and cursed a lot. I even threatened to rip out my husband's esophagus and strangle him with it if he had another hamburger in my presence. My first taste of "solid" food was a tablespoon of cottage cheese. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever tasted. I almost cried. Now I look at that hamburger and I don't miss it at all. I would have NEVER, NEVER thought that was possible. But I did it, and I'm not that strong of a person. It won't be easy. But if I can do it, so can you.
  8. Hi gang! I was suppose to start a pre diet 1 week ago, but am buying items tonight. Have not met with my surgeon and I do not have a date. I am done with pre program but my doctor thought I could start early on pre diet. I meet with surgeon next week to set a date. I did not make it today with liquids!! anyone at 300 pounds plus? What kind of protein drinks do you recommend?

    August 15Th

Get for after your surgery? Protein shake powders, egg beaters, greek yogurt, SF popsicles, SF pudding, anything your bariatric group or surgeon lists on their food list for your first week home.

    to all teachers

Hi, As I'm sure you know this week is teacher appreciation week. I was wondering if you could give me gift ideas for my daughter's teacher (3rd grade). I've done the usuals in the past - flowers, candy, etc. Is there something that teachers actually WANT to receive? I'm not talking a major investment, just something small but meaningful and/or useful. Thanks a bunch in advance, and God bless the teachers!! Robin
  11. Well it's day five i have to say i really go back and forth on the hunger scale some times i am thinking this isn't so bad other times i would do anything for some food. The sugar free popsicles actually do help. Not usually a big popsicle eater but it sure helps you get thru the hard times. I have read on here that the first three days are the hardest then it's gets easier. Still not the easiest thing i have ever done but definetly not the hardest either. I was scared to death about the pre-op diet more that i am about coming up surgery. I am having surgery Dec 30th. Anyone else out there with this date?
  12. I didn't see a February 2012 sub-folder in the "monthly" topics...I was approved Dec 13 and finally got a date yesterday of 2/22 !!. Boy was that a loooooong road. They are supposed to email my pre op diet instructions next week.
  13. Am I still swollen at four weeks, still trying get used to soft foods.

  15. IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO LIKE ME, IS JUST BANDED 3/28/11 WITH OUT THE FILL YET, ON THE liquid DIET AND HUNGRY ALL THE TIME? I KEPT WONDERING WHY I WAS STILL HUNGRY AND HAD THE BAND IN. THEN MY SURGEON TOLD ME THEY DON'T START TO FILL IT TILL 6 WEEKS. I WAS MORTIFIED!! HE SAID MY STOMACH AREA IS ADJUSTING TO THE INSERT AND VERY SWOLLEN STILL. SO WHY THE DIFFERENT DIET PHASES , LIKE YOU CAN CHOKE ON YOUR pills ETC. HELP! SOME ON EXPLAIN THANKS GUYGUYS1
  16. it's the infamous "three-week stall". If you do a search on this site for it, you will literally find over 15,000 posts on it. Almost everyone has that. Just stick to your plan and stay off the scale for a few days. It typically lasts 1-3 weeks. Your weight loss WILL start up again. And just so you know, you're likely to go through several of these on your journey.
  17. Have you noticed any non-scale victories? Are your clothes fitting better? My nutritionist said that the body fills empty cells with water, which weigh more than fat (or something like that) but you should see differences in your measurements (which is why she recommends taking measurements...which I did not do!). I found that during my stalls is when most people noticed my weight loss!
  18. Welcome to your first stall. They will happen FREQUENTLY (at least in my own experience). Your body has been through a lot and sometimes it needs to catch up with itself so it stalls you weight loss to do so. Your weight may even fluctuate back and forth from 1-3 pounds. It happens. stalls generally last between 1-3 weeks but can go on for longer (my longest two were 23 and 27 days respectively). Try not to stress about it because it's NORMAL (almost impossible not to do, I know). My first stall was at month 3 and it was the 23 day one. I questioned ever little thing I did and, yes, I thought 'am I doing something wrong?' but if you stick with your diet plan and just ride it out the weight loss will kick back up again naturally. In the 9.5 months since my surgery I've lost 110 pounds, so it DOES work. Some months you'll lose more than others, but you'll still lose.
  19. You’re likely in a stall. They’re very, very common. The first one usually occurs around week 3 but it can begin before or after that. I thought of them as my body needing a breath to catch up with all the changes - the surgery, the reduced & changed diet, the weight loss, etc. They can last one week or a couple of weeks & you’ll have a couple of them on your journey. You will start to lose weight again. Just relax & stick to your plan. Good luck & congrats on your surgery.

    Aggressive Fill

Mine is same as Kiz....can't get past mushies for two weeks, then need a slight unfill.

    Aggressive Fill

The most important thing is that you can get your fluids down. If you get to the point that you can't, you need to go in for an unfill. You can become dehydrated pretty quickly. This is according to my doctor, so yours may be different, but if you can't progress past mushies within two weeks, he says you should get some fluid taken out.

    Arthritus help

Will try to make this short. 57yrs old with best friend arthur. Tylenol does nothing. Have had knee replacement and now hip is hurtin horrible, sometmes can hardly walk. What does everyone due for pain? I broke down today and took 2 aleve which i know i am not supposed to do, just to get walking.i do take glucosimine every day. It is to the point i cannot exercise at all. Work 6 days a week so finding time to get to a pool is not an option. I know weight loss will help in the long run, but right now i am hurting constantly, any ideas?
  23. Congratulations on your successes! I agree that this has been the best thing I have ever done for myself! It's quite amazing how empowering it is when food no longer rules your life! Keep up the good job! I am 4 weeks out today and haven't been able to do too much walking yet (had a really tough recovery) but we went to see some friends to the LA Rock & Roll Marathon yesterday and had to walk probably a mile to get back to our car and I did ok, so I think I will start getting some walking in now :-) Keep posting your successes! It is such an inspiration to the rest of us and especially to those who haven't been sleeved yet!
