  1. Hey everyone everyday is a Win..in the baratric world we know everyday we have to either get fluids in, eat enough protein etc, ...what is your win for today? My Win is being consistent on my bariatric journey and movement, I have made it a goal to move almost daily!
  2. Maybe look into the GLP-1. I bet you still have your restriction. You just need something to curb your appetite. My friend is on them and she has lost a lot. Actually too much too fast I think. I told her she should go back to the lower dose because it was working at a steady reasonable rate. Now she struggles everyday to get in much of anything. Anyways, at the appropriate dose they are a good option for many people. Dr Matthew Weiner talks about them quite a bit on his podcasts. He has some you tube videos too. Insurance coverage for them varies drastically from one company to the next but if they are covered and affordable you may want to ask your doctor if they are a good option for you.

    January 2025 Surgery Buddies!

That's a very different pre-op diet than I had. I was on three protein shakes a day, pureed (non-starchy) vegetable soups, and as for fruit I could only have apple or berries. The berries I mixed with vanilla protein shake in my Magic Bullet for a smoothie. I never felt dizzy. Are you getting enough protein? Not sure how much is in one pint of skim milk...

    Maintenance Preperation

Hiya Sweetie, You could try adding an extra protein shake to your day, you could sip it in between meals. Or how about a cappuccino or latte at around 100 calories. xx

  6. I tried tagging my surgeon Dr Pablo Fok Russell. He's not in the list. Im currently waiting to be wheeled to surgery. I'm so far extremely impressed. I lost a lot more weight then expected on my pre-op diet. I was allowed salad with a protein choice, 13 almonds and protein shakes. Everyone is very friendly. I had an EKG, bloodwork & xray done as soon as I arrived. The bloodwork was back in an hour! I met everyone. I like everyone. Two women on my flight rode with me here. They are getting some sort of plastic surgery. One already had a facelift already. Looked good too! I liked riding with people who were familiar. The driver was really informative. Now I'm waiting to be wheeled back!
  7. Hey all! I’m new here. I’ve been doing my two protein shakes per day and one lean cuisine with 2 cups of broccoli but I’m still so starving!!! I have my date for January 22,2025! Help!

    Hitting my first stall?

Yes, eggs are pretty pricey, I have decided to rework my budget this weekend, I know I can make it work if I do some changes, I will try not to rely on the protein drinks too much and hopefully with a few reworks, I can get more solid foods in me

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

You may have to reduce your caloric intake more. I’ve run into this problem myself. There have been times when I gained up to 20 pounds. I had to eat less regular foods and more protein shakes and protein in general. I’m not quite back to where I was, but I’m trying. Good luck!

    Still High Anxiety!!

^ This. Post bariatric surgery eating is really hard! Never let anyone tell you that bariatric surgery is "the easy way out"! Regarding your protein intake, let's start with an understanding of why a protein-first diet is recommended post-surgery: Primarily, we are hoping to stave off something called muscle catabolism. This is when your body basically breaks down your own muscles. This happens mostly but not entirely to meet your daily essential amino acid needs. If we eat enough protein, this significantly reduces the amount of muscle mass your body will burn. That's important because the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism, meaning you'll burn more calories even at rest. Most scientific literature suggests that 60 grams per day of protein is sufficient to meet your essential amino acid needs and thus hold off the bulk of the muscle catabolism that happens while on a weight loss diet. Note that some muscle catabolism is inevitable and no amount of protein intake is going to prevent that. The second reason protein is important is because protein is filling and relatively slow to digest. Studies have shown that eating more protein than the 60 grams per day minimum can help you feel more full. That basically will result in reduced overall calorie consumption. For this, amounts between 1.6 grams to 2.2 grams per day per kilogram of ideal body weight have been shown to be effective. For example, if 60 kg was your ideal body weight. protein intake between 96 and 132 grams would be suggested. I'm not sure what your surgical team told you, but since you're already getting over the 60 grams per day minimum, I'd say you're doing fantastic! As you get further out from surgery, you'll probably want to consume more, but keep in mind that all it's really doing is keeping you full longer. It's not going to sabotage your weight loss due to excess muscle loss. TL;DR: You're going fine on protein, don't sweat it.
  12. Please ignore. It was misinformation online. I was concerned if they had a lot of iron that the calcium chew I was taking with them wouldn’t absorb as well but I checked the actual shake and it doesn’t have iron. It does have 650mg of calcium though so if I don’t take the multi with it I may be able to save some money on calcium chews. It’s calcium casenite. Just need to figure out if that is a form of calcium that we absorb post surgery.
  13. I admittedly switched to protein water! I find that the shakes are just odd tasting 🤣🤣 As others have said, they aren't really necessary unless you are struggling to hit your protein goals (which happens!). I mostly only drink my protein water when I am working out, or if I have forgotten breakfast (which unfortunately happens more than I care to admit).
  14. I was sleeved in 2016. Lost weight, but no where near goal. Gained it all back. I just had a revision to a bypass this week (Jan 13). Things are going fine, almost too fine. Minimal discomfort, I have no problem keeping fluids or protein down. I am eating about 600 calories per day with 80 grams of protein. I’m not hungry. (I am on a 3 week liquid diet post op at the moment.) I also haven’t lost any weight. Does this sound normal?

    Best protein water

My sleeve surgery was a few years ago and apparently some things have changed. I got some of the premiere vanilla shakes that I drank immediately pre and post op and I couldn’t even get a whole one down. I remembered that I did get sick of them and I switched to their clear protein drinks but apparently they are not as popular because they aren’t as readily available. I was thinking something from the grocery store makes more sense so I can get it if I’m out and about plus I don’t have to buy it by the case. Does Anyone have any favorites. I don’t like peach or orange.

    August Surgery buddies

You will be able to eat more. As long as you stick to healthy options you will be fine. There isn’t a huge calorie difference between a half a cup of broccoli and even two cups of it. Now if it’s rice or pasta you’re gonna be eating more. Stick to eating extra veggies with your meal or a dry salad (if you like them) before your meal to fill your belly. Also, we don’t have to eat until we are stuffed. We can instead just eat until we are satisfied. Like if you stopped now, would you be full until your next meal or snack? If not you need a low calorie filler.

At some point we all plateau in our weight loss. The thing to do is hit the protein shakes more than you used to. Pretend it’s the earlier stage, where you were limited to protein shakes and almost no carbs. I’ve had to do that myself when I gain weight or plateau. It’s not what we want, it’s what we need to do.

Report Your WINS ..What is your today's win??🥇

I would wait until you are sure but maybe do the research and know where you want to go or what you want to order so you can start trying them on asap. You will definitely be able to find one you just may have to pay more than you are used to if you are particular on pattern and cut. I had a real hard time when the options were so limited. When I gained weight I said that was one plus was the cups fit in the larger sizes so swimsuits worked. Ironically because I didn’t want to wear them then 😂. Anyways, if you do a search for 34DD and 34DDD swim (just in case) you will see that they are certainly available just not in every brand and style and not always so cheap. Some will come up and when you click on it they are actually sized S, M, L and don’t let them fool you they will not work for you anymore unless its a tie back in which case a too large band won’t be an issue. I just think you deserve the absolute cutest suit (or suits 😉) that you feel like a million bucks in so just don’t put it off until too close to summer and be upset that they are a little harder to find. The one thing you do have going for you is that you shouldn’t need much support so you can wear more styles than I could. That will increase your options some. If you go in person just plan a day you won’t be rushed or a couple shorter trips, Im sure it will actually be fun so long as your not rushed. 🛍️👙🛍️

    Meal REPLACEMENT shakes

The meal replacement shakes I liked the best were Bariatric Fusion brand in the cappuccino flavor for breakfast and the chicken soup flavor (made with warm water) for lunch and dinner. A caveat is that I hated both of these when I tasted them the first time. I almost got rid of them. Especially the chicken soup. But after about 3 days on the liquid diet, the soup was the best thing I ever tasted. I was so tired of artifical sweetness. I also can't say enough nice things about Syntrax Nectar Naturals orange flavor protein shake (but this is not a meal replacement shake, just a protein supplement). I quickly tired of the meal replacement shakes within the first month post-op, but I drank an orange protein shake every morning for about 6 months. I had very little appetite in the mornings but specifically the lightness of the orange texture/flavor made me feel like I was having a glass of juice. It's similar to drinking Tang, if you ever had that back in the day. Or maybe like Sunny-D. Not quite orange juice, but kind of a treat. I tried the other flavors and they weren't as good in my opinion, but I would probably still drink the orange one if I needed a supplement.

When to stop drinking protein shakes?

I still drink them at 17 months post-op - 1 a day. That being said you can give them up at anytime as long as you can get your protein in other ways. I personally find it easier to assure I'm getting my daily protein in by including Fairlife, but I'm still only eating 800 calories a day which makes it difficult getting 80grams of protein so they help. Yes, they're a pain to get and $$. I finally just decided Amazon auto ship subscription works best for me. You can just add protein powder to every thing you eat if you want.. 😁

    Food Before and After Photos

Well, I finally decided to join the fun here in this thread: I pretty typical breakfast for me: This is ~3/4 cups of 2% Greek Yogurt, some thawed frozen cherries and some protein boosted granola. I don't really log my food, so I'm just guessing as to nutrition, but I'd think this is ~250 cals and ~22 grams of protein. Why 2% Greek Yogurt? Because that's what my wife prefers, so that's what we buy. I don't have a strong preference, but personally would probably buy full fat if I were buying it just for me. Note that I often change out the fruit based on what we have and what's fresh in the store.

    Hey Everyone!

I and on my pre op diet right now. I drink a shake in the morning and a snack in the afternoon and a pure protein meal for dinner. After surgery, it’s pure liquid for 3 weeks, which doesn’t seem too bad. The Premier shakes keep me pretty good for a while. It’s honestly not been too bad.
  25. I need to get back into the swing of taking my vitamins and I’m thinking it was easiest to remember at mealtimes. Exactly how many hours do we need to wait between calcium and the iron in the multivitamin for it to absorb properly? What about calcium and calcium? I’m thinking calcium at breakfast and lunch and multivitamin at dinner but I don’t ALWAYS wake up super early so there may be less time between the two calcium’s on occasion. I used to do the multivitamin with breakfast and calcium at dinner and bedtime BUT now I make my protein shake into a Proffee (protein shake and iced coffee) and my tummy doesn’t like the vitamin with it diluted that way.i suppose I could try taking the multi with my evening snack which is a Greek yogurt? What do you guys do??
