7 days post op VSG - Right side abdominal cramping
southernspice posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey everyone, This is my first post on the forum. Looking to see if anyone has had a similar experience to mine. I had my VSG operation on 4/17, spent one night in the hospital and was home the next day. Side note: I also had a hiatal hernia repair and my gallbladder removed. Waking up after surgery was a bit shocking at the amount of gas pain I felt, but like everyone has mentioned on here, walking really helped alleviate it quickly. I've had the usual pain in the incision left of my belly button where my stomach was removed, so it's been a bit difficult bending and getting up/down without my husband's assistance, but nothing major. I've also had some difficulty swallowing liquids (water, protein shakes, creamy soups, greek yogurt), I get a sharp cramping for a split second when it hits my stomach, but then it goes away after a few seconds. I've read that other people have had this too, and it usually goes away if you take smaller sips or it may be swelling from my hernia repair. So all in all no major concerns. Today I've had something new appear though- I have a cramp on the right side of my abdomen at the base of my ribs. I feel it when I'm up and moving around or when I take a deep breath. It's not sharp, just a dull cramp that isn't going away. I've been getting in my 64 oz of water and 60g of protein, so not sure why this new cramp appeared today (actually last night before bed- I thought it would go away when I slept). Lastly (sorry this is super long), I have read about the phrenic nerve being irritated for some patients when the hiatal hernia is repaired, and I didn't think I had that issue, but now I'm not sure. For the last 3 to 4 days I've had the worst neck pain on my right side. It feels like a pulled muscle but it's constant and isn't getting better. I thought at first that it was probably due to the fact that I'm not able to sleep in my normal position and I must have slept funny and pulled a muscle, but does this sound like the phrenic nerve irritation that others have had? I honestly don't know. After reading this over it sounds like I'm having a horrible recovery but honestly it's not that bad haha My pain level is very low, I'm just reaching out to see if anyone has had similar pains or experiences. I'm grateful for any advice. -

since the day after my surgery which was on the 21st i was allowed what my doctor called full liquids which includes yogurt pudding creme soups and of course all the real liquid foods but i have been more than satisfied with a small bowl of tomato soup and a yogurt or pudding.. i would call and ask your doctor if these things are ok.. they are much more filling than just clear broth

2nd fill ~ Too Tight ~ Less than 24 hours.
tiff75 replied to want2beme's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Well, a little better--not pb'ing as much as I was..as long as I really watch what I drink and eat.. yesterday, i had a 1/2 cup of yogurt for lunch and it made me vomit and i felt horrible the rest of the day..the pain I had was so bad... I would liketo know what causes this pain???? What does it come from so I can try to avoid it!!!!! Maybe it was too thick and irritated the stoma as it was trying to slide down?? So, this morning, I tried to drink a carnation instant breakfast and it hurt me so bad..for about 4 hours to be exact! I always hurt so bad in the morning if i drink anything. I got some coffee because I was told warm liquids can help loosen the band and it did help a little. I am still doing liquids and mushies for the most part because I am scared to even try anything else. I am still debating whether to get a small unfill or not.. I tell myself I am when I am in the pain but when it goes away, i tell myself..ok.. i can deal with this.. the good thing is i have dropped about 10 pounds this week! So, can anyone answer my questions out there? Thanks to everyone who has so far... i need the tips and advice... -
Calling all October Sleevers
gaudjosl replied to sleevechic8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Surgery was October 16th so almost 4 days later now. Was in hospital until yesterday. Acid reflux and nausea was bad first 2 days and I could only do a few spoonfuls but I was even able to get cream soup and yogurt down day 2 and 3. Today is my first day "hungry" and I've had a full jello, pudding and 1 cup of soup. I had my gallbladder out at same time. I walked the block. I'm feeling great. I don't mind sipping. My prepop diet I lost 29 pounds. Haven't weighed in yet since. All I know is I am on the right track and I feel great! -
Wow! Real food already? How long ago was your surgery? I am on Clear liquids for two days post op, the full liquids (which includes Protein enriched skim milk, yogurt, and non fat pudding made with protein enriched skim milk) for TWO weeks. I don't get to "mashable" foods until in the second post op week! I know every doc does it differently, but......

I was banded 5/16 and I am suppose to b on liquids for 2 weeks (shakes, pudding, yogurt puréed soup). I can't start mushy food until 5/30. I am so hungry, getting depressed and angry I just want to eat something with a fork. I can't take another shake or puréed soup. Do u think it's ok to go to mushy food?? I know every doc is different. I just feel I would feel better Im weak with no energy. Help!!!

Calling all October Sleevers
Lucy Lu replied to sleevechic8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 10/2. I had a 2 night stay in the hospital. no gas, heartburn, nausea. I was able to drink (sip) very next day. I am still on liquid diet per my doctor. I will see him and dietitian on Thursday, 3 weeks post op. hoping they will all pureed food to diet as I am getting very bored with the liquid Protein shakes, broth and Water although I have also been having yogurt. as of this morning, 17 days post op, I have lost 23.2 lbs. I am walking a mile every other day. I have been sleeping really well, through the night. I am not snoring. I have more energy. I am staying awake later than usual. last night my husband grilled a boneless leg of lamb. I cut a piece, chewed it to death and then spit it out. the taste was enough to satisfy the hunger in my head and mouth. -
I add unflavored Protein powder to soups and broths and chili. You have to be careful to temper the protein when you do this so it doesn't get all clumpy and gross. To do this, you first mix it with cool to tepid Water to form a paste. Then, you very slowly stir in the heated liquid. You can't reheat, or the protein denatures (gets clumpy)---so you have to do this in single servings. I also add unflavored protein to yogurt and fat-free cottage cheese to bump up the protein. My favorite way to use it, currently, is to mix it with warm almond milk, good-quality vanilla extract (Nielsen-Massey or Penzey's), and a bit of Splenda. I really, really like this. I also use it in other smoothies---I like to blend together Protein Powder, kefir (kind of like pourable yogurt), inulin Fiber (such as FiberSure--it contains prebiotics that help the Probiotics in the kefir happily populate the intestine), a little Splenda, a little vanilla, about a quarter cup canned pumpkin (not the pie filling, just the plain pumpkin) and a good dash or four of pumpkin pie spice. This is a VERY filling--and really tasty--smoothie that does the trick for me when I really want something dessert-like. Delicious. And pumpkin is so good for you.

Full Liquids...but Some Hurt!
Paola replied to Joiebean's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Liquids were really hard for me for about 1 week, then on the 8th day it was like magic, I could drink and drink. My diet is a little different from yours, my first week was juice and broth diluted with Water, this is my second week and its the same but without diluting + Protein shakes, and next week its blended Soups and creams things with the consistency of yogurt. Even though I find that I miss chewing I think my diet is giving my tummy the chance to heal really well and the gases are not bothering me. I find that sometimes I forget to sip and I gulp, and boy does that hurt! keep up the good work! -
Getting vitamins down
Eli Alexander replied to Diane Grimm's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told that vitamins could wait one week. As far as medication that couldn't, make sure they are broken up to be smaller than an mm candy and I would have them with yogurt. It will be easy in a couple days, just take the necessary ones till then. -
Same here, protein shake in the morning. Usually a salad with grilled chicken. I found whole wheat high fiber tortillas at Costco, so usually have one of those with something on it... often it's ground turkey, but have also used chicken salad. Sometimes I'll have an apple for a snack (and extra fiber) or a frozen greek yogurt bar.

Dietician Meeting -- What questions would you ask?
BLERDgirl replied to heel5man's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@naenae85 - Thankfully I didn't have a liquid pre -op diet. I only had to make it through 2 weeks of full liquids so I could be a little more flexible. I mixed the plain powder with diluted apple juice or almond milk. I also used my nutra bullet and added cacao powder or almond butter. I found I could tolerate sucralose in small doses so I occasionally used CVS vanilla flavored whey Protein. I ate a LOT of FAGE 0% greek yogurt that I would blend with fruit in the nutra bullet. I drank loads of Kefir and I made bean Soup with pureed black Beans and veg broth strained to make sure all the skins were removed. -
For those craving snack foods, I have found Kay's Naturals Protein chips help. For the salty craving, my favorite flavor is Lemon Herb (they also have Crispy Parmesan, and Chili Nacho, and pretzels). There is also Krucheese chips, kind of a cheesy flavor. They are high protein, gluten free. The nut label is for 1oz but the bag is 1.5 oz so I do the math, because I eat the whole bag. They come in larger boxes, but I do better with the small bags, because I will stop when the bag is done. I can't always guage in a bigger bag or box and I eat too much. For the sweet cravers, they have Almond Delight and Hazelnut Delight (chips) and sweet/salty Sweet BBQ(pretzel and chip combo). They also have a new Cinnamon pretzel, and if you like wasabe there is a wasabe pretzel(I didn't care for that flavor). They also make Cereal in 1oz 100 cal bags in three flavors (Apple Cinnamond, French vanilla, and Honey Almond). I am a grab and go type person, so during the week they work for Breakfast because I keep them at work so I don't have to pack one each day. I drink a Protein shake first, wait an hour or so and then have cereal (I don't even bother with milk, I eat it like a snack) sometimes by itself, sometimes with my yogurt. I get Greek yogurt from Trader Joe's. They have a plain fat free there that has 22g protein per cup! Comes in a 2 cup container, and at home I split it into half cup servings (11g protein and only 3g sugar each) and stir in sugar free Smuckers preserves for flavoring (plus some cinnamon). I can't say every day is perfect, but I have probably eaten no more than 5 potato chips and a handful of regular pretzels since my sugery over a year ago. Kay's has a sampler you can order to try different flavors. They sell the bags in a carton of 12, and they frequently have sales. Find them at kaysnaturals.com. I don't know if this solves the snacking problem for anyone, but I hope it helps. Good luck on your respective journeys.

Greek yogurt with cinnamon and Splenda, smoked almonds, dill pickles, chocolate Protein drink, small amount of Pop chips, a few Triscuits with bleu cheese, beef Jerky. I'll occasionally splurge with a small amount of expensive top quality dark chocolate, eaten as slowly as I can possibly manage.

1st day on purée food
Carolina Rose replied to Carolina Rose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I tried ricotta bake today. I think I could only manage 1.5 Oz it felt heavy. I did eat a soft scrambled egg for breakfast very very slowly but I didn’t really like the texture. It felt odd. Finished my day out with Greek yogurt and protein shakes -
I had my surgery nine days ago and it went great. No pain or discomfort from day one I could tolerate clear liquids and even an ounce of yogurt several times a day. I am getting in 64 ounces of water in a day and 90/120 grams of protein. I use paleo egg protein mixed into my drinks. I average 700-900 calories a day. I have only lost two pounds since the surgery as good as I feel I am actually afraid that I will put weight on as I don't feel any restriction. It worries me has any one else experienced this?

Hi everyone. I had a gastric sleeve on September 12th 2017. In 9 days I lost 12 lbs and was ecstatic. Since my weigh in at the dr on 9.21.17 i have not lost 1lb! I am the exact same weight. I was put on soft foods on 9.22 and have been eating yogurt, eggs, chicken. Trying my hardest to get all my fluids, but averaging about 40 oz of fluid a day. Has anyone else experienced weight loss Plateau this close to the surgery date? It seems awfully soon to not be losing weight. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thank you. Thanks that makes me feel better. . . today is not too bad, I'm managing the 4oz of "food" but of course that "stuck" feeling is always there, except if i'm drinking the protein shakes or having cottage cheese, yogurt, and string cheese, but give me an egg or refried beans, and my goodness. . . next week i'm supposed to start on tuna! Lord, i'm having a problem with mushie refried beans, and now tuna? How do you all suggest i fix the tuna to make it go down better???????

2 weeks 3 days post op. I'm hungry, just can't eat much..... the things I manage to get down aren't the healthiest but I have to eat something. I'm still drinking protein shakes 1-2 per day. Today I had 2-1/2oz mashed potatoes thinned with beef broth, approx 2-3 oz yogurt, strained hot/sour soup, crystal light decaf ice tea and water. Tomorrow I'm going to try puréed hot/sour soup, seems to be my craving. I've only lost 10 lb since surgery but my clothes are falling off. My total weight loss to date is 43 lbs.

So I'm new to this but I had a hernia repair and a lap band revision to gastric sleeve on July 19th! I'm pretty excited with this new choice of life but confused at the same time. I never know if I'm eating enough I always have a rumble in my stomach. I'm not able to drink anymore than one bottle of Water a day. I sip on it all day but never exceeded one bottle. I know that's not good and I'm probably dehydrated but I feel stuffed after a few swallows but my stomach sounds like it needs food. I eat sf Jello, broth, Greek yogurt, and strained Soups but I'm not sure how much it too much. After two spoons of something I'm done. Is this normal?? My doctor has now allowed mushy foods. What should I eat and how much is normal? On the bright side I've lost a total of 19lbs but it sounds so unhealthy.

Post Op Lactose Intolerance...why?
ocean_ophelia replied to OilSooner's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm almost four weeks post op and going through the same thing. Yogurt doesn't bother me, but milk does. I NEVER had an issue with lactose either, so it sucks that I do now. From what I understand, it's because lactose can be hard to digest, and your stomach just went through a major upheavel. Most people a few months out don't seem to have an issue, and I hope the same is true for us -
Post Op Lactose Intolerance...why?
Mandy1 replied to OilSooner's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was searching for this topic and came across this thread. After my surgery, I'm now lactose intolerant. I'm four months out and I can tolerate a tiny bit of cheese or yogurt, but too much of either or any amount of milk and I get stomach pain and diarrhea. I hope this is a temporary effect and goes away eventually!
