No hunger after surgery...how to I know the right amount to eat?
abrow218 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I am about 10 days post-surgery and I have not regained my hunger back. I understand it depends on the person on when or if it will return. However, without the feeling of hunger I do not have the need to eat. I have to keep track my the clock or eat when other people are around and schedule with there meals. But I am having some troubles knowing the right about to eat. It kind of depends on what the item is but if I always have the feeling of fullness, when do you know to eat or how much to eat at a time? -
Things I didn't think of after sleeve.
JTHmom replied to Ginie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is where i struggle i don't think i want to give up certain foods forever . I have done great with my band and would still have a small piece of cake or an ice cream with my grand baby just not eat it like i use too. I don't want to lose my band i meet with my band doctor tomorrow to see what he thinks and with people removing their band they have the same issues as i do and are at 10 yrs like me and with the ulcers my primary doc said i need my band out. I'm online trying to get as much info as I can before i make a choice -
Thinking Of Getting Rid Of My Band For The Sleeve.....advice?
CamarilloCA replied to Sarah35's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I also had the band in 2008 and had revision surgery a month ago. I hated the band. I threw up blocked food at nearly every meal, and I was hungry all the time with the band. I chose food that would stay down, which was usually unhealthy food that I wouldn't have normally chosen just so I wouldn't be hungry anymore. There were so many things that I couldn't eat with the band -- healthy foods, high Fiber foods. I looked at my band as surgically induced bulimia. I did lose some weight with it but just about 10% of the weight that I needed to lose, and it eventually came back. I know that there are some people that have been successful with the band, especially people who normally eat large portions, but I wasn't one of them. Like others have said, I am only sorry that I didn't do the revision surgery sooner. Edited to add: I have the sleeve now, and I have not thrown up once since the surgery. I can eat healthy foods now, and the weight is coming off. -
Hello all, Been a long time since I was here. Lots going on. on 20 Oct 2019 it will be 3 years since my RNY surgery. I have a checkup with my bariatric surgeon today. It is supposed to be every year, but since the emergency surgery last year it has been every six months. I have stopped going to support group (I think it is great but I am not getting anything out of it). I am still about 155 lbs and am pretty happy. Still have sugar issues, but everything else is ok (per blood tests). I get to go next month for the MRCP on my pancreas (I am hoping the IPMN hasn't grown). I flew from Detroit to Pharr, TX a couple of weeks ago to pick up a Mazda MX5 (my dad gave it to me, he can't drive it anymore), and drove it 1700 miles back to Detroit. Then a little over a week later my wife's brother was killed in an automobile accident. I drove about 500 miles (from Detroit to Carthage, NY) last Thursday (so I could be at his service) and got up the next morning and drove about 500 miles back to Detroit. Not really feeling it anymore, this is probably going to be my last time seeing my surgeon. I don't need to pay him $40 to have him tell me I am doing fine. I know how I am doing. I hope everyone is doing well.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate all the input. I think I'll probably be feeling much more up to singing on Christmas Eve ... maybe not the Sunday before, so we'll see what happens with that. I've never had surgery, so I'm not sure how my body will react, but for some reason I feel pretty confident. I guess I'll find out December 19 All my pre-op tests came back with really good numbers, so I'm hoping my good health (besides obesity, of course) will help me out with my recovery.

Scar Tissue With The Band?! :(
Kirstyn1226 replied to alwayseating2012's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I just had my band removed on Thursday, July 19 and will be having VSG done but I was only told that I had to wait until I finished all the requirements of my insurance as I would if I did not have the band at all. For me that involves 12 weekly classes, two bariatrician appointments, one Psych appointment and another appointment with my surgeon after the other requirements are met. I already completed 7 of those classes and my surgeon was guessing that I would be seeing him again for the sleeve in November-ish. I was under for three hours for the removal and, according the my surgeon, the first 30 minutes was removing the band and the last 2 and a half hours was cleaning up scar tissue in preparation for the VSG. Now, I had my band for 9 and a half years so I completely expected a ton of scar tissue. And YMMV. I will be crossing my fingers for you that you don't have to wait a year. I'm going to guess that each surgeon has their own preferences and experiences with doing a revision. -
I would love to know if insurance covers revisions and what circumstances, if any, this is the case...I have searched my heart out and can’t find any answers in forums-feel I may need an evaluation to consider revision or *something* to address my October 13th ‘19 sleeve with current weight loss(3/24) of only 15lbs post surgery...I am devastated

I wasn't hungry for about 10 days after surgery, but as I continued to heal, I did get hungry. By the time my 1st fill appointment came, I was ready for it. Now I'm definitely ready for my 2nd one which is next week. Right now, I don't feel like I have much restriction at all. My advice to you is to still follow the rules even when you are on solid foods and are hungry. I have really tried to limit my food to the portion sizes my doctor and nutritionist recommended. Good luck! You will do great! -
Scar Tissue With The Band?! :(
CowgirlJane replied to alwayseating2012's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was given the choice of whether to do in one or do in two. My surgeon preferred separate surgeries to at theoretically reduce risk so i opted to go that route. Everything worked great, but don't know, it might have been fine to do in a single surgery. He said only needed about 2 months separation though. I had the lapband for 10 years and it was slipped and totally encased in scar tissue. -

hi!! i am doing really well. My biggest struggle is getting enough protein and water everyday. I'm also having a really hard time remembering to take my vitamins everyday. Do you guys ever stand up too quickly and black out? That's been happening to me lately! I am 10 days shy of 4 months out from surgery and have lost a total of 105 lbs. (I lost 40 lbs in preparation for surgery). I am hoping to lose 30-40 more lbs. I am hoping I can do it but a little in disbelief that it could be possible. Then again if you had asked me 4 months ago if I thought I would be down 100 lbs I would of said heck no!

kandi165 replied to Moosewife's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Wow! I'm really worried now. My surgery date is Feb 5, 2014. I know, not even 2 weeks. My BMI 32. I'm worried my surgeon didn't make my sleeve small enough. I never get nauseated are as full like other people that had it. My stomach is supposed to be 3 ounces, but I just drank a 11oz protein shake in 10 minutes. Sure I'm full, but give me a hour. My stomach will feel empty agin -
Need Advice?moving From Clear Liquids To Full Liquids
DustyRider replied to RaleighGal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded two days ago. Have been on clear liquids, and am slowly introducing a bit of other liquids today. I took some watermelon and apple juice and blended it for about 2 minutes. Poured through a strainer and let sit for about 10 minutes. Skimmed off all the 'thickness' that I could get out and am drinking it now. I found that it took MUCH less of this to help me hit full than just clear liquids. -

Congratulations on starting your journey! I had a 6 month required pre-op, and I am completing my last requirement on Monday 4/10, so then it will all be submitted to insurance. Don't get discouraged by all the requirements, just do one step at a time and you will be there before you know it. This is a great board, lots of info and really awesome people! -
Revision from sleeve to bypass

Ready for my own Throckmorton story? I live in a smallish Ohio city, Mount Vernon, known for 3 things, Daniel Decatur Emmett, who wrote " Dixie", Paul Lynde the late actor, and population 20,000. My late Mama grew up near a small village, Centerburg, the Geographic Center of Ohio, population maybe. a thousand if you count people, dogs, cats, and the people in the cemetery. Downtown 2- 3 blocks at the most. Well I happen to. be walking along minding my own business, when up sails a highly dressed older woman. Proceeds to grill me about my relatives, Mama had 6 sinlings, my Daddy 10 or 12, depends on whether you count the uncle who committed suicide 30 years after shooting little sister with Grandpa's loaded squirrel rifle. Well back to my story, How was uncle Merlin, How was my mama and finally How. is my dear friend Grace? Aunt Grace would have choked at THAT. Finally I had enough, I said sweetly "May I ask who wishes to be remembered to these members of my extended Family?. She drew herself to her considerable bulk and snapped out "Mrs Kenneth Throckmorton" Oh Genevieve, I am so sorry, I did not recognize you, it has been a while ,you know. Eating for the first time did NOT go well!
kimberlymi replied to Jezzabelle360's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My surgery was 2/12. I am in the soft food stage. I tried an egg on the first day I started soft foods ( I wanted to die). My main protein sources are ground chicken, ground turkey, fish and yogurt plus my every day 4 oz protein shake. When I started the soft food stage I was so excited to eat something not liquid and purée, but I still have days I would not mind it again. I can eat 1/4 c of what ever I’m eating. I am cleared to start eating raw fruit and veggies. I had a slice of seedless cucumber yesterday and it went well. Today I will have a cherry tomato with my lunch. Just keep trying. My nutritionist has a great rule that I have used. When you eat something and it upsets you or causes the day long “ I want to die “ feeling the next day go back to a few protein shakes and full liquids. I’ve used it now 2 times in 2 weeks it helped. Everyday is a new lesson we learn with our new stomach. RNY. 2/12/19 HW: 474 (5/16) ST: 412(4/18) SW:308 (2/19) CW: 272 (3/27) -

Hey Guys; My sleeve is scheduled for Monday 10/20 @ noon. Great to see guys (no disrespect meant to the girls). I look forward to following you and allowing you to follow me. I'll have to remember to check-in and report out regularly. Super excited about Monday. I'm a "surgery" expert, so this procedure doesn't worry me at all. At 51 and now single....YAY! Oh; sorry....lol....I feel this procedure is the start of my very lengthy "bucket list", of which, I am now completely in control of.....YaY! This is all about me....finally! Not the kids, not the Ex....just little old me....well, not little... I've been living the lifestyle since June 2014 and have lost a bundle of weight and feel great. I just might make it to my goal weight....as defined by the experts....of 155. I think I was last 155 in Kindergarten....lol. I'm spending this weekend getting my business in order.....cleaning my apartment, shopping for stage 2 foods, walking the dogs, listening to meditation/relaxation recordings, etc. Trying to decide what to pack for the hospital. But being a guy - I may just wear out - what I wear in....and take some essentials in a shaving bag sorta thing. Hey dtill1147 where did you get that scale thingy above? I'd like to have that for tracking/posting. -

Is there any reason not to start heavily dieting now?
GoingRogue replied to Tina4heath4ever's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do it. I'm currently pushing myself and I am still about 3 months from surgery. I'm afraid the drastic change will be hard for me so I'm trying to change it now so it's not such a shock after surgery. I've lost 15 lbs but I had gained 10 since my first appt with my doctor so I'm only down about 5 but still going! High Protein, low carb! It's also a great time to find out what Protein shakes and stuff you really like. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Hi everyone, so last year August I spoke with my primary care doctor about getting weight loss surgery. We both agree its the best choice for me.I did all my classes with my nutritionist & got approved for gastric bypass surgery. My surgery date is April 19 but for some reason I'm scared. I read a few entries about people regretting doing surgery & some horror stories. I read stories about people gaining back weight & others in n out of hospitals for various things.I'm scared. I'm terrified and honestly don't know if I should continue this journey. I'm 5'7 273lbs. I try so much different weight loss pills/diets and none work. I want to get the surgery so bad to save my life but at the same time I'm scared it's going to make it worse. I'm having mix feelings about this, anyone ever felt this was before surgery? Please help!!!! Sent from my SM-G925T using BariatricPal mobile app

How to explain this to my kids??
ms.sss replied to saramelie's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
this is very thought provoking for me! you know, it never even occurred to me that getting wls would/could have re-inforced negative body issue ideas to my daughter at the time i had it. like the other poster above, i just told her point blank (she was 12 or 13 at the time). i think it was along the lines of "i'm having surgery to reduce the size of my stomach to help me lose weight". and i remember her asking me why i wanted to lose weight and me saying that i am fat and i'm getting old and being fat and old will probably stop me from getting older....AND i just wanted to not be fat anymore and surgery will help me alot in achieving this. and that was that. now, my daughter is familiar with the concept of surgeries so maybe that is why she presented as aloof when i told her. when she was 5 or 6 she asked about my breast reduction scar and i told her i had surgery to make my boobs smaller because they were too big before and hurting my back, and now my back doesn't hurt anymore. also when she was younger she asked why she doesn't have younger brothers or sisters and we explained Mr.'s vasectomy. she was 10 when my mom had double bypass surgery and she knew that the doctors took a vein from grandmas leg to put in her chest to help her heart work better. she is also like her father, slim and naturally active and fit, so i dunno if me doing something to my body to "fix" weight would trigger her in any way... BUT i totally see now how WLS in particular may touch on self-image issues and ideas that we may perpetuate or even create about our kids bodies. i'm gonna go ask her about her thoughts later. -
Article - Importance of Vitamins/Supplements post-op VSG
Tiffykins replied to Tiffykins's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's my understanding that some Vitamins can interfere with the absorption of calcium. In addition to other meds/vitamins, Calcium needs an acidic stomach to fully breakdown for absorption in the intestines. Since most of us are taking a PPI, our stomach acid is decreased. I found contradicting articles on Prilosec interfering with calcium citrate absoprtion, one article said yes it can/does, the other said no it doesn't. So, I take my calcium mid-afternoon and right before bed. I take my Prilosec first thing in the morning. Iron and zinc are listed in this article: How to Best Absorb Calcium Supplements | eHow.com Step 1 Take Vitamin C at the same time you take a calcium supplement. Or eat a food rich in Vitamin C, such as an orange. This helps with the absorption of calcium.
Step 2 Eat foods high in the amino acid lysine, which is needed for calcium absorption. These include eggs, fish, lima Beans and soy products.
Step 3 Take a sunbath without sunscreen for 15 minutes, three times a week. Sunshine is the easiest way to get Vitamin D, which is essential for proper absorption of calcium. Stay out of the sun when the rays are strongest, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Step 4 Divide up your doses of calcium. It appears to work more effectively if taken in smaller doses spread out over the day, rather than a large dose all at once.
Step 5 Combine calcium with magnesium in a 2-1 ratio - two parts calcium to one part magnesium.
Step 6 Avoid taking iron and calcium together. It reduces the efficacy of both minerals.
Step 7 Avoid taking large doses of zinc with calcium. At high doses, zinc can interfere with calcium absorption.
Step 8 Decrease or eliminate soft drinks from your diet. They are high in phosphorus, which can cause you to lose calcium. High phosphorus intake can lead to calcium excretion in your urine.
Step 9 Decrease or eliminate animal-based products in your diet. High intake of animal-based Proteins causes increased amounts of calcium to be excreted in your urine. A high intake of sodium is another culprit.
Step 10 Cut down on junk foods, alcohol, caffeine and white flour. All of these lead to an excessive loss of calcium from your body and a decreased rate of absorption.
Step 11 Eat foods containing oxalic acid in moderation. Oxalic acid interferes with calcium absorption. Foods containing oxalic acid include almonds, beet greens, cashews, chard, kale, rhubarb and spinach.
Step 12 Use wheat bran in moderation. Excessive amounts can interfere with calcium absorption.
Step 13 Check your prescription medications. Some, such as glucocorticoids, can interfere with calcium absorption. Discuss supplementation with your doctor.
