  1. I have not been able to tolerate protein shakes since surgery, I couldn't even handle mixing powder in with smoothies so I totally get it. My go-to has always been string cheese. I buy huge packs of it from Costco. You can try Greek Yogurt too.

Non Fat, Low In Sugar Yogurt

Unflavored, non-fat, Greek Yogurt is best. Depending on your doctor's guidelines, you can add your own level of sweetness later with 4-6 blueberries OR raspberries.

Two Weeks Out And Need Help

Caution! Just because you feel good doesn't mean you are completely healed inside. That takes time. Talk to your nutritionist. I am two week out 3 weeks tomorrow and I'm eating sugar free pudding, sugar free yogurt, cottage cheese, cream of wheat, pureed Soups and occassionally mashed potatoes and baby food. Still doing sugar free Jello and ice pops. 78 grams of Protein a day Minimum 48 ounces of fluids Either 1/2 cup or 1 cup depending on what it is. Talk to your doctor or nutritionist

    What was your pre-op diet?

I just started mine yesterday. I was down .5 lbs this morning. I got my pre-op diet on Wednesday and was told to start as soon as I could get to the store. My surgery is June 26th so it'll be about 2.5 weeks on the diet. Meal 1 - 8oz skim or 1% milk with 1/2 scoop whey protein powder isolate and 4 oz fruit Meal 2- RTD protein shake or 8oz skim or 1% with whole scoop protein powder Meal 3- 6-8oz low fat, light yogurt (preferably Greek) with no fruit chunks <7g sugars and 4oz fruit or veggie Meal 4 - 1oz nuts or 2TBSP peanut butter or 1/2 c beans or hummus and 4oz fruit or veggie Meal 5 - 4 oz protein, 4 oz veggie with 1TBSP raw olive oil and 1/2 c whole grain starch or 1 slice whole grain bread or 1/2 potato Meal 6 (optional) - 8oz skim or 1% milk with 1/2scoop whey protein powder isolate and 4 oz fruit 3 Hours between each meal and drink 100oz of water or fluids So far not too bad. The hardest part is the 100oz of fluid. While I'm happy that there is some food on my plan, there's a convenience element to just shakes rather than measuring out a bunch of stuff and reading labels, but I guess the point is to get into the habit for after surgery. So the blender, scale, and 4oz containers are my new best friends. =)

    Sleeved Almost A Week Ago!

I walked every 2 hours for the first couple of days. Then we hit a heat wave here and I walked 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon. I got bored with that and snuck back to the gym (was supposed to wait until a month out). I only do the treadmill for an hour. The liquid diet does get boring. I did broth with unjury chicken soup flavor, protein jello, sf popscicles, water, crystal light. About a week out I was okayed for yogurt, so I had that as well. I'm on purees now and loving the variety.
  8. Call your nutritionist. She can tell you if you are actually getting any protein from the bean juice. She can also give you other ideas. Maybe you will be allowed to make a Greek yogurt smoothie diluted with fat free milk. Personally the nectar chocolate truffle saved me. I mixed with only 6 oz milk and one scoop. That is 30g protein. I had two per day and got my liquids in. That is all I could tolerate.
  9. My band was placed on Dec. 29 2010. I wasn't told how much to eat, only to eat full liqiuds. Now I'm seeing other sites( and this one) talk about only 1/2 cup at each meal. Is this right? I've been able to take down more than 1/2 cup with no problems. If I have 1/3 of my protein shake, a cup of soup or a cuo of yogurt and maybe some jello at one meal, I'm fine. I'm full at that point. Then I eat the same at the other 2 meals. But maybe I'm full and eating more than I should. I can't tell. The first four days, I was full and not experiencing any hunger,. Now I'm beginning to be hungry in between meals. I think.. I'm finding it hard to know if I'm really humgry or not. Should I be eating less? Is the 1/2 cup a meal I'm reading about just for when I get to solid foods? I've been losing 2 lbs a day since surgery, but today I had gained 1 lb. I don't have my follow-up appt. until Jan. 7th. I'm afraid of being hungry in between meals. Leigh
  10. I am taking Nexium 40 mg by opening the capsule into a spoon of yogurt (applesauce is too acidic). I tried sipping water today whenever I felt the cramp coming on and sometimes it headed it off, other times it made me hiccup painfully. I tried to just let it be to see if it was just a burp but it hasn't been so far. Do you think I need to change from my Nexium to something different? How do I know what I'm feeling (hunger, acid, or gas)? Stupid question I know but I don't know how to tell the difference at this point.
  11. 22 pounds gone is that to slow? eating nothing buts protien, yogurt, meat, beans, eggs etc...
  12. Eat Proteins Egg salad, cottage cheese, Protein shakes, etc.... But go easy, you don't want to hurt your stomach you don't want to overload, and hurt something. Look on line for protein foods, and find whats soft like yogurt, and enjoy it. It will help tame the Hunger Beast. If they gave you a diet of calories a day, then don't forget to count all that in. Shirley.
  13. I'm 6 days post op, and I was allowed to go to purees upon release from the hospital. I didn't then as I had zero interest in putting anything in my mouth! But now I'm feeling that gnawing hunger that you feel in the pit of your stomach. I didn't expect to feel it, and I don't really know what to do about it. Here is what I have eaten today: 6 oz 99% ff yogurt (in this I mix my PPI and my gallstone prevention med) 1/2 low carb slim fast 1/4 cup of oatmeal made with 1/2 cup of milk Water, ice chips, and a sf popsicle When I enter this in fitness pal, it says I have eaten 410 calories...and it's only 1 pm here! That is more calories than I feel I should be having, but at the same time I feel hungry. I'm so confused, and I don't really understand any of it! oh and I've lost 10 lbs in 1 week.
  14. I'm doing fairly well. It's still hard to swallow. I can eat three spoons of clear Soup and get pain up my throat and chest area. Doctor thinks its just swelling and advises a go slow approach. Strangely enough I can eat yogurt fine and my Protein shakes go down well enough if not too cold. I do seem to be sensitive to both hot and cold. Fudge sickles are yummy but painful. So is hot soup i was sleeved on the 4th and went back to work a week later. I have an office job so it's not bad. I go to bed early though. I'm off pain meds except to sleep. I find that I wake up every two hours without the assistance and I know my body desperately needs sleep so I'll do what I need to to get it. I'm eating almost nothing - maybe 300 calories a day and I feel like I'm eating nonstop to get that much in. I'm also having a terrible reaction to aspartame. That's new. Yuck. I advance to puréed foods this weekend and I can't wait. I'm not at all hungry but my mouth is bored. I've lost 21 pounds so far. The first 15 were pre-op. I know I'm still swollen so I'm delighted with the progress. My pants are really loose. It's annoying but good because otherwise my incisions would be bothersome.
  15. I'm starving! I was sleeved on April 4th, it'll be a week come Monday since my surgery, and I feel like I could eat a sandwich! I don't have any of the symptoms I've been reading about on here. I've been staying on the liquids, tea, yogurt, broth, and I pureed some lite vegetable Soup yesterday and got 2 meals out of it, but I feel more bloated then I do full. The only discomfort I have is from my outside stitches tugging and feeling itchy, but they are due to come out on Wed., and walking, I walk slow because of all the liquids, I get a cramp in my side if I don't. My stomach is not bothering me at all, even after I pureed the soup, I don't know if I can last another week on just this type of diet. I'm beginning to wonder if they took out half my stomach or missed and took something else? lol.. Is anyone else feeling like this? Has anyone started adding soft foods to their diet, like soup, in the second week without having to puree everything? What foods can I eat without causing any damage to my stomach? I don?t understand my band!

I do have days like that. On the days that I am tight, I will try to stick to softer foods (yogurt, eggs, chili, etc). Mornings everyday is not good for me. I am so tight that sometimes liquid takes time to go down. With that I just stick with Protein shakes. You will learn to know the band, it just takes time.

Need a buddy that can help me

Here's something I just posted in another forum. You're not quite ready for this yet, but maybe you'll get some ideas about how to get your fluids and Protein in once you get a few more weeks down the road... I keep a 2-quart jug and a 24-oz cup both at home and at work. I count my morning Protein shake as a meal, not as Fluid. (30 grams of protein) 30-60 minutes later, I have a cup of coffee. (Count it as a fluid if you like.) After that, I drink a 24-oz. cup of decaf, sugar-free iced tea, like Crystal Light. (Lots of frequent sips) Then I walk for 40+ minutes. Then it's lunchtime - tuna or chicken salad, or leftover protein from dinner. (16-22 grams of protein) About 45 minutes after lunch, I fill another 24-oz cup of iced tea and work on that throughout the afternoon, finishing by 30 minutes before my afternoon snack. Afternoon snack is usually a Greek yogurt (12 grams of protein) or V-8, or some leftovers. (This is also a good time to get in some veggies if you're getting enough protein at other times.) Maybe a cup of hot tea in the later afternoon. (Count it as a fluid you like.) Then dinner - again, getting 20-25 grams of protein and maybe a bite or two of veggies. Finally, another 25-oz cup of iced tea or Water 30-45 minutes after dinner that I sip throughout the evening. If I'm hungry later, sugar-free Jello or popsicles are good. So that's 70+ grams of protein and more than 64 ounces of fluid, with some exercise thrown in. Lately I'm finding that the fluid is taking away my need for Snacks, so I have to make sure I don't miss out on some protein! If you have a regular enough schedule, you can follow it every day. If not, maybe a modified version will work. The big trick is in pre-planning your meals and your fluids. Good luck!
  18. Thanks, Ladies! I just got moved to phase 2 of the liquid diet which includes yogurt, pudding, & cream Soups. I feel like I've just won the lottery!!!!! I still get extremely hungry, but these seem to help curb it for an hour or so. Good luck to both of you...I wish you continued success!
  19. I can’t take it. I can’t consume one more chemical food-like substance! Protein shakes... blah! The thought of them make me nauseous. Creamed soup? Gross, SF pudding? Why? There is no nutritional value. I’m 11 days post op. Feel fantastic! I’m getting in my water, and I can drink normally. I’m on full liquids but all I really want is plain water. I have had some Greek yogurt, but two bites and I’m full. I’m lucky to finish the single serving container in a day. Just frustrated I guess... I just want some cheese, chicken salad, and green beans, lol
  20. Are you weighing your protein? My doctor says 3 oz. I understand you are following orders. How many days post op are you. I was not allowed mushies until day 15 and that was yogurt. Canned meat not until day 21. Everyones body is different so even if your doctor okayed canned meat your body may not be ready.
  21. Feeling pretty good today. Maybe about 65% better! Visited the doc today. Everything is looking good. I learned that I have the "standard band" placed not a large one. He gave me an RX for my thrush (from antibiotics and dehydration after surgery). I can start FULL liquids on Thursday. This is BIG for me as I have been on a clear liquid and Protein shake diet since January 23rd!! Adding in runny oatmeal for Breakfast and drinkable yogurt will be huge for me!! I started the pre-op diet on Jan 23 at 236 Today I weighed in at 216 I know.....wow! Hope everyone is having a great day?
  22. They're great ideas Actually last night I cooked up a bunch of healthy stuff and stocked up on the greek yogurt hoping that I'll run for the Protein if I get weak

the band to the sleeve ?!?!?

A few ideas/suggestions: Make sure your meat is not dry...or if it is, use something to moisten it to help it slide down. BBQ sauce, ketchup, greek yogurt, mustard.. whatever you like. It's not going to matter all that much on the calorie content of the "food lube" because you're not going to eat all that much of it. I find that having 1 bite of Protein and a bite of a juicy veggie (cucumber, tomato) often works as a food lube too. Double check that you really are taking small bites and chewing well. You could get toddler utensils or a cocktail fork and demitasse spoon. Some suggest chopsticks. Try drinking a cup of hot coffee, tea, or a cup of hot thin soup/broth right before your meal. The warmth can relax the band and make eating denser foods easier. You don't have to wait 30 minutes after drinking the warm liquids to eat.. maybe 2 or 5 minutes...but I've not waited at all and still had good appetite control. Avoid reheating meat in the microwave. Or if you have no other choice, try wrapping or covering the meat in a damp towel (paper or cloth). The reason to avoid the MW is that microwave cooking tends to remove moisture. The damp towel will help prevent some moisture loss. If you decide on an unfill and other than the meat issue you're doing well.. I'd ask for a tiny unfill. .2cc's would be my suggestion, but this is just based on my experience of tiny fills. Your bariatric team will know your case and if they suggest more.. well.. your call. Hope you get some relief.. it's no fun getting stuck so often. And not good for the band if you're having to bring the stuck substance back up frequently.

    Does Vsg=Lactose Intolerance?

I used lactose free milk and still had an issue. Yogurt and cheese though are fine for me.
