Those of you who are banded, do you exercise?
patty103 replied to sleepyjean's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I normally exercise 1 or 2 times a day 30 to 40 minutes each. I have lost 81 pounds in less than 7 months. A friend of mine had the bypass 2 days before I was banded and she has only lost 90 pounds and the bypass is suppose to be so much faster upfront than the band... I am just so thanksful that I feel like exercising. and I also work 12 hour shifts so some days I don't get to the gym but I try to be pretty faithful except this month with the holidays I haven't worked out and I can really tell a difference. My out of town relatives just left today so I will probably be hitting the gym later today, it is a lifestyle now and I can't quit.... My Dr told me my weight loss was so good because of the exercise. Also I am near 50 years old so my metabolism has slowed and the exercise helps it pick back up, the most important is do what you can live with for the rest of your life, so your weight loss will last that long also.Don't know that I can exercise 2 x a day for the rest of my life but I don't ever want to give up on it, that is when I started gaining years ago.. -

VSG revision to Gastric Bypass
SleeveandRNYchica replied to staceymaelofton's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am in the same process. My sleeve dilated during pregnancy (I was not overheating) it was a difficult pregnancy. The weight I gained I have not lost and my gerd is horrible. So I went in for a the upper gi and barium swallow a few weeks ago and he determined that I have severe gerd and a dialated sleeve, which he says he has seen in several post pregnancy sleeves. I am scheduled for an endoscopy the end of May. In the meantime, they are contacting my insurance regarding revision. I have BCBS Federal, I am not sure if I will have to go through all the requirements again. So just waiting. Good luck to u. -
1 Year Out An Its Not Good.
jetpilot replied to Skinnyagain's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is a lot of debate about carbonated beverages and the sleeve. Nothing will cause your sleeve to expand. Not even carbonation. The CO2 comes out of solution in your stomach and you burp and the pressure is relieved. There is no science I could find supporting the elimination of carbonated beverages. I believe it's probably a carry over rule from the bypass and the band procedure where the stomach can still stretch. I don't know if it's any comfort to you but your sleeve won't stretch. Your lack of weight loss is probably due to the sugar in the soda and other things you shouldn't have been eating. -
Hi Deanna and Kim, I am having this sort of thing done late January. When I went for the appointment he said to choose a 3 month gap in my diary. Not that I would be off work or anything all that time but really between long haul flights etc just to be sure. Flying after one month might be ok and probably definitely after 2 months but to reduce the stress and worry if there were problems 3 months might be better. So that is why I have chosen February because we are flying to Hawaii in January, and there is a symmetry to it because of course it will be 2 years after the bypass. Mine is more major than other people who I know who have had wls and are only staying a couple of nights. I think because my weight loss is more and the surgery is more extensive, also I need the umbilical hernia dealt with that they found at the bypass. I will be in 4-5 nights and it will be a 3.5-4 hour op. He described it as having 100% morbidity (not mortality!) because something will always go wrong. Infections -urinary, chest, wound etc, clots, hemorrhages etc, but they are looking for them and can sort them. I found that strangely reassuring. My friend who had her bypass at the same time as us was told she would be out after a couple of days and less about all that though and her operation is less extensive. So don't see that as what most people have been told. I know someone else who has had it done and his was more extensive too and he was in for 4 nights, had odd problems but is fine and delighted. I didn't think the costs were too bad, £8,000 (not dollars )including 2 surgeons (one for the hernia) and an anaesthetist, and everything covered for a year, including a longish hospital stay. I thought it would be worse than that. So Kim you are having it done in August, when do you think yours will be Deanna. Do stay in touch and we can support each other, as always!! Claire x

How Do You Explain Rapid Weight Loss, If You're Not Telling Coworkers About Wls
Shells_Almost_There replied to LSCLatina's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I have told almost no one about my surgery - by the advice of the psych doctor (who had gastric bypass himself). What's annoying is the very few people who know will monitor and comment on what I eat which drives me nuts. I'm so thankful he advised me not to make my private decision too public - it has worked out pretty well for me. I was on a strict diet pre-op to qualify for surgery and people at work probably noticed my change in eating habits. Since surgery (I was on "vacation" ) I have slowly lost another 30 pounds and no one has said a word - my weight loss has been slow and natural. Maybe 3 people have noticed some slimming down and been nice about it. So, if anyone asks, I tell them I am "working with my doctor and a nutritionist and I'm on a high Protein, low carb diet." That's all they need to know and it's 100% true. No one has questioned me about it. -

I have acid reflux since sleeve surgery in 2012 did the MGB take care of the reflux and if so is it still under control? I am looking to have the revision in Mexico I see you used Dr. Illan was it a good experience and is he someone you would recommend. I really don't know who to use for sure in Mexico I really want to get off PPI meds and have no more acid reflux. Thanks for your time. Peggy -
Sleeve to Mini Bypass Revision

I wish insurance covered the mini bypass....would rather have less resectioning of my intestines, honestly.... Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
It hasn't been hell and I didn't mean to come across that way. I don't dump daily. But I do vomit almost daily. They are not the same thing. I dump on very sweet food. It feels like death. All of my trouble is because I am stubborn. The bypass has been great and has kept me in check. I feel better than I did at the beginning.

As of 2/6/14 I will be at one year.. yahooo!!! Gastric Bypass Starting weight: 243lbs Current weight: 133 lbs This year has been a roller coaster with many ups and downs along the way. To say this journey was the "easy way out" would be so wrong. I've cried, vomited, stressed that I wasn't losing weight as quickly as others (which was way to harsh on myself). I have forced myself to eat then turn around a few days later and remind myself not to eat too much food. I have obsessed over drinking fluids or having bowel movements. ( sorry if that's too graphic for some of you). I have driven my dear sweet supportive husband crazy with my emotions. I'm not perfect with following the doctors schedule plan of eating, but I follow what my new pouch allows. I allowed myself a treat here and there and maybe I enjoyed it but most of the time I have paid the price for doing so. I have learned to celebrate the non surgery victories and stop focusing on that scale. I am happy and healthy for the first time in Twenty-five years. I have no regrets having this surgery other than not doing it sooner. My true journey is still to come as I approach the maintenance phase (I still need to lose another thirteen pounds) I know I will make mistakes, but that's ok as long as I learn from them. 1st picture is of me on the day of surgery. 2nd picture is a week ago

Hi Deanna, I am having the hernia that they found at the bypass sorted out when I have the apronectomy on 28th Jan so I will let you all know how it goes. Has anyone found that their weight has had a bit of a bounce back, because mine has? My dietician seems to think it is predictable and normal and I am not over stressing about it, I just want it to stabilise. It would be good to know whether it has happened to any of you though. Have a lovely Christmas Deanna and everyone else. Janette how are you doing? How is Kim doing after her surgery. How are you Erin? Sounds like everyone is great if they are not posting here and this has been such a great group and a massive support when we all needed it. It's a positive sign that we are all thriving. Have a lovely Christmas and Happy New Year Claire

Anyone have a revision from sleeve to bypass? If so how much more weight did you lose? I have lost another 30 pounds to date and my surgeon told me I should only lose about 10.... Worried I might keep losing and get myself in trouble.

How long does ACID Reflux or GERD last
SleeveDreamer replied to key12's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you are referring to insurance, I didn't have either surgery for weight loss so BMI was not even considered. I had some upper GI issues. I have lost weight, but really didn't need to. Had I not had this RNY, it would have been likely that in the future I may have gotten esophageal cancer because my acid was so out of control. Also I had an area on my esophagus that was so thin from acid damage, it would have probably ruptured in the near future, so he had to repair that when he got in there before he did the bypass. My pouch is smaller than normal because of the repair so the restiction is much greater than the sleeve restriction. But everything is going great. Never had any pain or any nausea, and I am on all food now and no issues. No regrets! -
I posted this on another thread... I had band to sleeve revision on 3/13. Here is what can tell you: food always got stuck on my band even when it was all the way open and even after I would chew, chew, chew. I would throw up at least 3 times per week from the feeling of food getting stuck. Since revised, I've only thrown up once and not because food got stuck, but because I took Vitamins that did not sit well with me. I've never had a stuck feeling since the revision and in fact can eat anything now, just very small amounts. The reason people throw up with a sleeve is from eating too much and/or too fast in one sitting, drink when they eat or too soon after they eat and/or something didn't sit well with their new tummy. Your tastes definitely change. If you just listen to your body and follow the Protein guidelines and liquid rules you will lose the weight pretty easily. I'm rarely hungry and actually struggle to get all of my calories in. Way different than the band when I always still felt hungry. My weight loss would be much higher if I could eat more each day (35lbs to date). For the actual surgery, I took off two weeks from work and should have gone 1/2 days on the 3rd. After the 1st week I had no pain, but the extreme weakness I felt week 2 made me feel as though I might had made a big mistake getting the surgery. I was worried it was going to last forever. It carried over into the 3rd week, though not as bad. It gradually improved every week and today I feel better than I have in a long time (prior to surgery even). One more thing to add...I wish I had chosen the sleeve over the band in 2009 because today I would be sitting at goal. I feel it works much better than the band. No complications and soooooo happy I had it done. I feel great!

Really good discussion on this topic... http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-ricki-lake-show-wrap-up.html I'm not sure exactly where I sit on this whole topic. There are days that I feel over-the-top excited over getting to live life in a smaller body, and then there are days that all I can see is the extra skin, sagginess, and I feel sad about my body. And then when I'm feeling sad that sort of mean, reproachful (not helpful) voice chimes in and says "well what did you expect spending most of your life either obese or morbidly obese, you get what you deserve..." Blah blah blah. And there are days that I feel like I'm in "touch" with my body now, and then I will realize that I have it all wrong. The other day we took the girls to see OneRepublic in concert, first concert for our pre-teen girls...how fun! And while we were all waiting in line to use the bathroom there was a large mirror to the side wall of where we were standing. I scan towards the back of the line and saw someone who I guessed to be about my size. Then later we both happened to be right up at the washroom mirror both washing our hands and I was shocked to realize that she had at least 60+lbs on me that I couldn't see until we were standing next to each other. And so then times like that I realize that no I really don't exactly "see" what other people see. Certainly a good topic for discussion...it's rather disheartening to hear that Michelle from Eggface (link above) had bypass AND plastic surgery and still isn't happy with what she sees in the mirror.

Post Op Diet Reminder
TijuanaPlication replied to Lmom1980's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
Didn't your doc send you home with enough pain meds? I'd try and continue with what he prescribed until you can eat normal foods. Like FatToPhat said, I'd act as though I'd had the full plication again foodwise. Long term NSAIDs are fine after plication. You can't have them after RNY ever. I had sublingual painkillers for the first few weeks post op, so I'd check with your surgeon if they're OK before you're allowed solids (you don't wanna mess up your revision). -
Why Did You Choose Your Specific Type of Weight Loss Surgery?
allielee replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm disappointed that there is only one response here. I have a band (slipped), and would love to know whether the sleeve or bypass would be better or has worked better and why. Once you leave the land of the Banded, you really only have a few choices. And they're not reversible, anymore input would be awesome ???? I was a successful bander until it eroded .. Last year I revised to bypass . Sleeve wasn't even an option for me. Reason being I wasn't going to have "another wls surgery again" I wanted this to be the last one and my doctor said the sleeve is sometimes the first step to bypass.. I wanted the gold standard.. It's so much easier than the band was and I am wayyy healthier now than I was then. I can eat chicken and veggies no problem!!!!! -

Why Did You Choose Your Specific Type of Weight Loss Surgery?
lclemur replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I chose the sleeve over bypass for three main reasons: 1) I was afraid of dumping 2) I wanted to be able to use Nsaids. I have had a lot of broken bones, and fear arthritis is in my future 3) I heard a rumor that those that do bypass have a higher rate of farting. I already fart a lot, didn't want to increase it Lol! Originally I was going to go lap-band. The high revision rate, low overall success rate, complications, all factored into changing my mind. Also, I was told that many insurances make it extremely difficult to do a revision. It is a "one surgery" chance!
