Was cleared to eat anything-but to avoid bread, at only 5 weeks post-op. I can only tolerate such a small amount of pureed food, when I eat chicken I feel like an elephant is sitting on my chest. Now I'm becoming afraid to eat! I'm still drinking 2 shakes a day (have to!) for 60 grams protein, but meals are not enjoyable! I can only tell when I'm full, when I'm too full. I don't get sick, but feel like I could. Even One egg is too much! I have to stop when I've eaten about 75% or risk the elephant feeling! I'm happy to be fading away, but I worry that it will be too fast and I'll also age faster, too! I do get all my vitamins in, plus the protein and about 32 oz. water so I'm ok nutrient-wise. Does this phase pass? Is this unusual?

Does drinking water make you hungry?
LookingForMe posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm having a problem with drinking the amount of Water that my doctor wants me to drink a day. I'm not drinking with meals or for 1 hour after a meal (as he directed). But 1 hr after the meal, as soon as I start sipping on water, I start to feel hungry. I know that it's probably because I'm washing all of my food through the band, but I don't know how else to get my liquids in! Does anyone else have this problem? Right now, I am getting around it by starting a bottle of water 1 hr before a meal, and telling myself that I have to drink the water and then wait about 10 more minutes before eating. I don't know if this is a good way or not, but it seems like the only way I can get in the fluids without being hungry. I am worried, though, about stretching my pouch by drinking the water so fast. BTW, I am 3 weeks post-op, and just starting on solids. -
You pouch has stretch sensors in it which signal the brain when you're full. Following surgery those sensors are temporarily ineffective during the initial healing process. Nothing to worry about and a blessing in helping you get your protein and water intake in. Within a few weeks you'll start getting full on much smaller quantities. Keep in mind that it's important to get ALL of your doctor's recommended protein in every day. Equally important to get as close to 64 oz of water a day as possible. Dehydration can land you back in the hospital in a heartbeat. You're doing great and you're gonna love the new you!!

Daily fluctuations in hormones, activity and water intake can all affect our band and how much we can eat. The type of food you're eating, stress levels, and who knows what else can affect it, too. If you are losing 1-2 lbs per week by following a protein/veggie/then carbs plan, not drinking with meals, exercising and drinking water, then I would say you are fine. However - if you are doing all of that and not losing, then you might need a fill. One of the hardest parts of banded life is putting into place the "just because I "CAN" eat it, doesn't mean I should" mentality---I follow a 20 minute meal rule. I stop at 20 minutes and leave my plate -- if I am still hungry 30 minutes later, then I know I need a fill. Remember -- as we lose weight, often times our band losens as we lose fat around our internal stomach -- it could be that you do need a fill for that alone...? Good luck!

High hopes to high
Barbiek replied to MADE IT 2 MY GOAL..OH YEAH's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on July 2 and have only lost 17 lbs as well, and I am getting a bit discouraged. I already had 2 fills, and have not lost any additional weight with the fills. I noticed that my food is getting stuck more often when I eat, however, I haven't lost any more weight. I have another fill scheduled for next week and I hope that one helps. I don't feel like I am overeating, but the scale just doesn't want to move. Everyone is different when it comes to weight loss, so try to not to get too discouraged (and I will try and take my own advice too!) Good luck! -

I am right there in the same boat with you. I been banded since July 24, 2008 and I have lost 17lbs. Since my last fill almost a month ago I haven't lost anymore. I actually think I was doing better before my last fill. I am so nervous to go back to the dr to weigh this time. I go a week from tomorrow. I can eat. I have to eat a little slower or i get a little choked sometimes but thats it. I know I eat from mentally telling myself I'm hungry. BUT...that was why I ate anyway. I'm really having to try. Purposely eating more slowly is helping me. Although I have bit my jaw more times than I care to count because of all the chewing. Good luck and please let me know if you come out of your slump. Our situations sound very similar and I went to this sight for some help! Thanks. -
8oz before or after mixing protein shake?
gnortenjones posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Got banded on Friday. I've been using Unjury's Protein powder, blended with 8oz of skim milk, per the dieticians instructions to drink three 8oz servings a day. However, after I run it through the blender, the final product is well more than 8oz due to it getting "fluffed up" in the blender. My question is this: So should I be drinking the entire amount I'm mixing, or only 8oz of the final fluffed up product? -
I had the same after a day or two . . . and I generally felt exhausted. However, within a week I was feeling pretty normal again with just a little soreness. It passes quickly . . . just make sure you get as much rest as you can, get in as much fluids and proteins as you can and take it easy.

To weigh or not weigh? Breaking scale obsession
California Guy replied to iseanu's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I weigh myself daily. It helps me identify trends and ensure I'm doing everything right. Just don't focus on daily data, try to compare by the week or by the month. -
To weigh or not weigh? Breaking scale obsession
GradyCat replied to iseanu's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am totally scale obsessed. I actually have to get my husband to hide it from me sometimes. I weigh every day but I'm trying to train myself to limit weighing to once a week, the same time on the same day of each week, but I'm so curious as to what's happening with my weight. Water fluctuations don't help! So, long story short, I'd advise you to weigh yourself periodically, maybe every two weeks, to keep yourself in check, but not too often to get obsessed about it. Like you said, there are many other Non-Scale Victories (NSV) to measure our progress. -
Hello everyone, I was banded on August 11 by Dr. Barry Greene in Rockville, Marlyand. Everything has been going along just fine and my current restriction is decent, even without a fill. That said, if I have to drink one more chocolate...banana...strawberry, vanilla ANYTHING I am going to lose my marbles! I figured out this week how to make things a bit more "interesting" by going to my favorite Thai restaurant and having her whip me up a nice and mild Lemongrass Soup; then I drink the broth of soup(which is very, very close to clear) and let my husband eat the chicken and veggies. It has saved me this week. My question to those of you who have done the two-week post-op liquid diet is how was it when you ate for the first time? I am actually a little scared about eating and having something get stuck. And was is a common "first meal?"

Two weeks post op. Out of habit I finished a Jello pudding cup . Sitting at my desk at work. Don't know what I was thinking. I feel fine. After the fact I looked up how many ounces (3.5) which equals 7 tbsp. EEEKKK! I am only supposed to have 2 tbsp per serving right now.

I am 6 weeks out. I can eat 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, 3/4 of a chobani yogurt and could definitely put down a cup of pudding (if I liked the stuff). I was taught in my program to eat until satieted and try to limit the day to 3 meals. If I feel hungry, I can have a snack and usually choose a wedge of laughing cow cheese, a bit of salad (mostly lettuce), a cooked shrimp (I say cooked because there are some who eat it raw - eww). I would love to hear about others who have these 2 ounce restrictions because it is a different approach than I have.

2 month Surgiversary update!

That's amazing. Good work. I'm going to schedule my vsg date this week. You're pics are inspiring -
MM, I do understand your frustration. No one has really noticed my weight loss either. Most people see me almost every day. I think it is harder to notice then. Even my mother hasn't said anything until last week, and her comment was, you finally look like you have lost weight. Granted I am not the most perfect bander but I have still lost some weight.

A few weeks ago we went to visit my FIL and his wife. They do not know anything about my surgery, only my DH. I have lost around 45 pounds, droped 6 sizes in my clothes, and they dont even say a word about it. My DH knows I dont like making a big deal about it so he didnt say anythig to them about it. A few days after we got back home we get a phone call from my SIL and she is talking to my DH and tell him "Dad told me that Laura has lost alot of weight and just looks great", now why couldnt he say something to me about it. OH well I do like the fact that he bragged to my SIL about it anyway...........LOL. I he thought I looked great then, just wait till they see me at Christmas. Motivation Baby, Motivation!!

To break a stall you may have to heat MORE. It's counter-intuitive, but your metabolism may have gone into "starvation mode" hanging on to as much as possible. You may still lose inches during a stall and your body will eventually catch up. To speed up the process, try increasing your daily calorie consumption to 1000-1200 for a couple of weeks and see what happens.

2.5 weeks post op - down 30lbs
ebert replied to Alatini21's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one shedding serious weight at this point. I'm 12 days out and this morning I went to the NUT for a weigh-in and consultation. The weigh-in revealed that I've lost 20 pounds since leaving the hospital, and 28 since the surgery. The NUT was considerably surprised and slightly concerned. He green-lit me for more sugar in the form of 100% fruit juice drinks each day (200 ml). I'm going back next week--if I lose another 20, he'll be officially worried, and me as well. Even though I might be shedding too fast, it's kind of hard not to feel excited. -
Restless monkey, thanks for the insight! We are the same age! How do you deal with the challenges of being banded over 50? I often times feel jealous of the yung uns that have all that energy to get out there and exercise for hours and hours. I am so exhausted working 6 days a week 50+ hours at my age (bad knees, arthritis) to have the energy. I know - EXCUSES -EXCUSES Baby steps. Getting in that exercise is my next goal.

Had my surgery on 10/17/12.... up until now was really wondering what the hell I was thinking. Well, really, I'm still thinking that. I'm just out of sorts. My Dr wants me to stay on Protein shakes, Water and yogurt for the first 21 days. That was making me feel so lethargic and yucky. Yesterday I ate three or four bites of egg and instantly felt better. Is it the different type of protein or is it just in my head? I'm still getting weak quicker than I expect. Still trying to find comfort zone. I started this process to be healthier for my granddaughter. To be able to be active and live longer with her. That is my prize, so each pound lost is more time with her, thus worth every minute of any discomfort I may have.

I just blew it on some barbecue chips my son had lying on the kitchen counter knowing chips are my weakness. I've been doing good all week but I feel so guilty now, like I shouldn't eat anything else for the rest of the day. What do you all do when you get off track?
