Protein, water vs calorie intake.
jess9395 replied to Pinkpeonies1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do some searches on here for favorite Protein shakes and do some taste tests! There are hundreds out there I'm sure you can find one you like. Took me a LONG time and I don't like most of the ones people on here rave about, but I just kept tying! Personally I like the Syntrax Matrix ones (mint cookie and Peanut Butter cookie are my favorite) and the BSN syntha 6 ones (Mochaccino, orange cream and vanilla milkshake). Keep trying! At your stage I was doing two most days and Greek yogurt to get my calorie and protein count up. -
Examples of pureed and soft food?
Creekwood replied to newskinnygal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For purée I liked chili a lot, refried beans with ff sour cream, cheese, salsa, I did meatballs with spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce/cheese of your choice, then there's easy things that are already purée consistency applesauce, mashed potatoes, Greek yogurt, ff pudding, protein shakes. Good luck!! You can purée almost anything. -
In My 9Th Day On My Pre-Op Liquid Diet
Phranquie replied to KayKay20's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I am on a two week liquid diet and I will have to say it has been hard only in that I have found I hate Protein shakes. I am not a big sweet eater so the sweet shakes and drinks are now making me nauseous. I am very worried about getting in my protein. I have been eating very little, mostly broths and sf ice pops or fudge pops and I can easily deal with that. I ordered some unjury unflavored Protein powder to try in broths. So the last couple of days I have supplemented my clear broths with a cup of cream of broccoli Soup and also a roasted rep pepper and tomato soup and I had a greek yogurt all of which are not on my doctors liquid diet (his says only broth) although I have seen them on others. I am keeping my carbs low which I know is the most important thing. I have another week to go and I wonder if the addition of the Soups for four days will really matter before I go on my clear liquids for three days. Even with the addition of the cream based soups I am only getting in 300 calories a day and under 30 grams of carbs. What carb levels are you at right now in the pre-op diet? -
Typical day of diet- is this right?

Looks good! You're getting the amount of Protein needed. Maybe have a higher calorie snack? A 100 calorie yogurt? -
What is your daily menu/meal plan
1poundatatime replied to chrissyliezl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved 2 days after you. I've been having: Breakfast: 6oz shake (18gm protein) Snack: 6oz shake (18 gm protein) Lunch: 8oz cream soup of some sort Snack: 5oz total greek yogurt thinned with almond milk (8-11 gm protein) Dinner: 8oz cream soup Snack: 6oz shake (18 gm protein) And sipping 48 oz of water throughout the day. Sometimes I splurge and have a popsicle or a little bit of kefir. -
I was taking miralax and MOM every day and adding benefiber and Metamucil to my Protein shakes. I still only had a BP every 3 days and it was so hard I would make myself bleed trying to go. I finally discovered what worked was INSOLUBLE fiber. Metamucil and benefiber are both soluble fiber and can actually make constipation worse. Since I started adding insoluble fiber (Now Foods Apple fiber and ground flax seed) to my smoothies and Greek Yogurt I've been able to stop the miralax and MOM and I have a soft formed poop every morning.

On my full liquids my biggest addition was cottage cheese and yogurt. I didn't really bother with 4 oz of creamy soup, the other addition. -
Food costs now vs post op...
Daveo replied to Allens Comedy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am lucky to eat most my meals at work and they usually have some type of meat that I can eat. If not there is soup and the good old favorite cottage cheese. If I buy any food for days off/snack it is usually Greek yogurt. I am bad about not getting in enough protein so I have to start buying drinks and bars to help. -
Struggling with head games
Darktowerdream replied to Starflower's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@Starflower i am the same. I fought my carb and sugar addiction for so long and even that didn’t prove enough until I had gastric bypass surgery. So I am terrified of falling backwards. I was in hospital for surgery and they kept wanting to serve me carbs laden foods! I had a small bowl of oatmeal when I had no choice and it was the only soft food I could stomach. But for me I feel carbs fuel my metabolic disorders and the addiction as well. You need to listen to yourself. Nutrition doesn’t need to come from traditional carbs. ive allowed myself a little low carb granola on my yogurt, a manzano banana, sometimes a pear. There’s ways to get nutrition and not lose more weight without adding carbs. I can’t add much you got great answers but I do understand how you feel. -
Uncomfortable stomach (post-gastric sleeve surgery)
Penguin733 replied to Penguin733's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, it's honestly getting to the point where it's making me feel nauseous after I eat. And I would think the portions are fine when I'm eating just a single serving of yogurt and one protein shake at a time (both separately), but I'm trying my absolute best in having my required amount of water and protein, but this has been inhibiting me from doing so. Like I can only do 55g of protein at most out of the recommended 80-90g. And I am going back to work tomorrow and I want to make sure I'm ready and have enough energy as I have very much on my feet walking a lot job, and because of this issue it is also stopping me from having my complete water/hydration amount to the point where I still get lightheaded if I get up too fast and the only way to stop it is drink more water which I can't do because I keep hitting that wall! It's so frustrating!! -
I've been off the boards a bit simply because I'm so busy. Surgery was 11-4-2014. Highest weight 348..surgery date 312--and today 245....... And now I've hit a brick wall. I have been stalled out here for months. I need to add I've had some issues... In Jan I was bitten by a dog and spent 4 days in the hospital with a bone infection after surgery, the. The bone didn't set so I was back in surgery 2-20... Shortly after I developed siatica and was unable to walk at all and only went to dr office and bed I was very depressed and unable to do anything, I recovered from siatica after about 3-4 weeks treatment. The arm however isn't yet healed. My concern is that I feel I've been lingering at this weight literally for months now. And it's depressing. Once I got back to walking I average a few miles up to 5 miles per day. I then found I have an abnormal curve to my neck which causes my arm to feel "asleep" most of the time. This has all played a huge part in my exercise plan. I took on a second job which included great physical demands. Today alone between 2-8 I got in my 10000 steps plus even more. I built myself up and took part in a 5k walk for obesity. My eating is minimal. I start with one cup of coffee in the am and then no more. I typically had about 2-3 oz of chicken or tuna salad about 9am. Then at 12 I might have yogurt or cheese. And the evenings I have a little less than 1/2 of a frozen meal such as Atkins or smart choice and focus in high Protein. If the meal has Pasta or bread I only have a small amount. I really don't do well with either so mostly I'm getting the protein and veggies. I am seeking advise on how to break a stall?? I go back to my dr in August and had hoped to loose another 50lbs before then but not sure if that is possible. Any advise?? Please I'm depressed that I'll be here forever and I certainly want to be a more healthy weight. Presurgery I wore 28--today I'm more 16-18 pants Thanks in advance!! I am not getting in 1000 calories per day. I also fight to get in my water!

Am i doing wrong or is it normal?
glitter eyes replied to jaysmm's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had pain eating and drinking post op and what worked for me was using toddler spoons and taking super tiny bites even if it was something as soft as yogurt. I also drank from a medicine cup the first few weeks and made each little cup last three tiny sips. Eating and drinking that small amounts and that slow got rid of my discomfort. If it makes you feel better it goes away for most of us. I am two years post op and can eat normal bites and eat at a normal speed. Hang in there and congrats on your surgery. The first weeks are rough. -
Tight band in the mornings....
Wondercup71 replied to Wondercup71's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Ok great, at least I dont feel alone in this. I thought it might have been too tight. But I actually got used to it, and like you guys, I start off tight so I can only have liquids....but by late afternoon I can eat few solids. For the rest of the day I snack up on yogurt, Ensure, or anything easy to digest so I keep that satiety feeling. Thanks all and good luck with yours!! -
Losing Fast Enough? & Other Questions
Andre Garcia posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone, This is my first post. I had surgery on 11/14/16 and have wondered if my weight is coming down fast enough, and if not, how I could increase the amount of weight loss or should have concerns. I know that losing weight more slowly could give my skin a better chance of keeping up with my changing body, but I can't help but wonder if I am doing something wrong. I already know I can increase my Water intake (getting 32-64oz water per day). I'm in my 3rd stall and noticed it happened when I started eating "regular" food again (after the puree phase). The stalls drive me nuts, especially since they seem to be lasting from 3-7 days. At six weeks post-op, I am at 303.2 pounds, down from a day-of-surgery weight of 334, or an average weight loss of 5.13 pounds per week. I have read using multiple sources that weight loss varies between 5 to 15 pounds per week. I am wondering: what is the difference between those that lose 5 pounds per week versus those that lose 15 pounds per week? If your rate of loss is faster than mine, what are you eating, how much water are you getting per day, how much are you really exercising per day/week, and do you have any other medical factors that might be contributing to your faster weight loss? Also, I have a few other questions: At this phase of my diet, I'm supposed to be eating 3 meals a day and not drinking Protein shakes anymore. Is anyone out there still relying on shakes to get the additional protein? I feel like 3 meals a day doesn't give me the minimum 60 grams of protein I'm supposed to have per day. Also, I have started weight lifting and believe I need more protein than my diet specifies. I noticed I had a tough time with ham, barbecue pork, and asparagus...I get a tight feeling in my pouch even if I chew these down to nothing. Is the pain I feel really the food trying to pass into my small intestine? Seems like some foods like greek yogurt go down really easily while others, no matter how much you chew, cause discomfort. Knock on wood: nothing has made me throw up yet, but at times I feel a little sick when I haven't eaten in a while. I have not experienced dumping syndrome yet. I am wondering if the daily probiotic I am taking is helping reduce the risk of adverse effects. Are you taking a probiotic? Have you noticed any benefits? Sorry everyone...I know this is a long post, but since it's my first, I have so much on my mind. Thank you, Andre- 6 replies

Stomache pain when eating
MimiFB replied to volsfan82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Volsfan2 - I was sleeved on 10/12 and I have not had any issues so far and I am keeping my fingers crossed that the trend continues. Refried Beans are not allowed on my plan. So far, I have only tried broth, yogurt and Soup and of course the Protein drinks with no issues. I drink/eat them all pretty slowly. Hope you get better soon. -
I Have A Question
OneWritersSoul replied to saddie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use the Old El Paso Fat-Free ones. Once I warm them (1/4c at a time since I'm the only one eating them) I top them with Sargento's Reduced-fat Colby Jack cheese then microwave until cheese begins to melt. After, I stir in either Pace Picante sauce or my own homemade salsa (thank you Jesus for making me Latina and for my Ninja!) and top with a teaspoon to a tablespoon of Fage 0% Greek yogurt- it's higher protein than sour cream and still gives me that creaminess. Oh and no gas! -
Puree Stage Baby Food Blues

Cottage cheese, yogurt, chicken salad pureed, refried Beans with cheese, etc... There are many tasty options for pureed and soft foods... Step away from the baby food! -
@@ErinMarie how much fill do you have in your band right now? I would start by taking a breath. You just had a baby my friend and congratulations on that! Being a new parent (even if this is not your first child) is an awesome task and breast feeding is demanding. I can understand why you may be having an issue with proper band eating mechanics. That said however, you really want to be sure that you are not hurting yourself by getting stuck to often. So the first thing I would want to do is to take some time if you are able to check on your band. To make sure that things are all sitting right and working well. Once you have done that, give yourself a few days of liquid diet to help "reset" things, and give your stomach a chance to heal. If you have gotten stuck even just once, your stomach could be swollen and the space in your stoma could be smaller than you think it is and this could be another reason you are getting stuck more often. Before taking that step to switch to Protein drinks for a few days, consult with a lactation specialist and get their advice. As well as the advice of your pediatrician to be sure that your not feeding the baby anything that could cause an issue. After all a cranky baby is not going to make you feel great If all is well go on a liquid diet as you did pre-op and/or post op and supplement with some non fat greek yogurt, make some sugar free fat free pudding etc. Give your band a break and let it heal and reset, you will start losing weight and most importantly you will feel better. As for your hubby, it's nice to see that he is concerned for your health and well being. Show him that you are concerned for yourself and your family as well by taking the time to check in with your band Dr. and baby Dr. and take the next steps to make you both happy and healthy!! Let us know how it goes!

Only 10 days post op and already getting discourged
criolelaie replied to m12345's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi m12345 are you on clear liquid or full liquids? If on full liquids you can have any kind of soup (blended and diluted to liquid consistency), strained yogurt, Protein shakes. If you are still on Clear Liquids and you are doing well you can maybe contact you surgeon and ask if you can progress a bit earlier. I did it with my surgeon and he was happy for me to. Clear liquids post-Op for 7 days?
JDLane replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My week 1 was clears plus protein shakes. Then full liquids which included yogurts, jello, soups, thinned oatmeal, etc. It gets much easier when you on to full liquids and then puree's feels like heaven when you reach that! -
Need some feedback about daily diet
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to szavala22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm no doctor or nutritionist but 400 calories a day is way too little. I see no veggies and no fruit in your daily menu. That would be the first place I'd try to start adding in some calories. I also see no dairy, which is another food group you definitely need for calcium (unless you're lactose intolerant). Adding a cup of skim milk or a Greek yogurt would be great. I would take your food logs into your nutritionist, they'd be the best person to help you adjust your daily routine. Best wishes. -
Need some feedback about daily diet

You should still be in the soft food stage. Try mashed potatoes, refried beans, yogurt, cottage cheese, apple sauce, soft cooked veggies, and oatmeal to name a few. -
What's really going on here
JackieBrown replied to athena3127's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Really. Crackers, veggies, and cheese are not going to make you feel better. Did your doctor give you that diet? You need Protein and Water, lots of both, as these will help to repair your stomach and whatever else was cut up. You have to realize that your body went through a major trauma (I admit, that's easy to forget as we heal), and it needs your help. Carbs fill you up too fast and curb your appetite for short periods of time. Instead of that, eat those soft cheeses (ricotta, cottage, string), sugar-free yogurt, kefir, soft eggs, and even pureed meats to up your protein. Plus, make sure your water tastes good. I drink bottled water because my tap water is really hard and tastes lousy, so I drink a couple of quarts a day. That flushes lots of the garbage out of your system and also helps with the healing process. Water also curbs my appetite. If you can't get to a gym right away, go out for a walk. Even a brisk trot through the mall is good when the weather is bad. Bring along your string cheese for a snack and always tote a big bottle of water. You'll feel better in no time. Keep us posted on your progress.
