I am almost 3 weeks out and still trying to figure out this eating thing. I am currently on soft foods (baked fish, PB, yogurt, cottage cheese, banana, etc) but I am not sure if I really know how to eat all this different things. I try and have something every 2 hrs. with protein drinks in-between. I am getting my 70+gms of protein a day in addition to my 64oz of water… Does anyone else out there have a schedule to how and what to eat? Will I ever be able to have more than 3-4 oz at a time? I can't imagine ever getting to have a plate a food (even it small in portion) with my family. No regrets, but just trying to figure it out.

Protein Shakes VS. Real Food
SKCUNNINGHAM replied to Ellenenchanted's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My response is only my opinion - I am not a doctor or a nutritionist. I am 2 years and 7 months out from surgery. For the first 2-3 weeks, I primarily drank Protein drinks, then my doctor started moving me into real foods. There is no agreed upon "one best way" for VST post op care - so doctors do what they think is best. I think the doctors who work with dieticians in their practice are probably better informed. But I am the kind of person I did a bunch of reading on my own outside of what my doctor provided. Also a lot of it is personal preference and how much an individual wants to have to think / plan / prepare their food. Protein Bars and drinks can give you a balanced diet (except for fiber) with very little effort and can keep you out of the kitchen. I use to make a Protein shake (with powdered protein, fruit and yogurt) every morning since Breakfast food isn't my favorite. I use protein bars and drinks when it is convenient (flying on a plane, etc). I don't get as much satisfaction from them as I do with "real" food. I think the important things are to make sure you get sufficient protein, liquids, Vitamins and Fiber during the first year after surgery. Making sure you get quality protein in is more important than what the protein is. BEWARE - all Protein shakes / powders are not the same quality of protein. As you move into year two, you will find the things that work for you and it will become more routine. Best of luck to you Sharon -
Constipation is a common problem after weight loss surgery. My doctor talked about this yesterday. Was told that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Prevention: Drink 60+ ounce of fluids per day! Fiber supplements...fiber gummies, Benefiber, Wheat germ 4oz of apple or prune juice with 4oz of water. Probiotics like Greek Activia Yogurt 1 Tablespoon Allbran, 1 Tablespoon applesauce, 1 Tablespoon prune juice. Combine ingredients and refrigerate over night. Take 3 Tablespoons and repeat daily as necessary. Rescue: Milk of Magnesia Miralax Enema Suppositories Stool softener (Colace) All of this is from my doctor...you should check with YOUR OWN doctor before trying these....just putting them out there as things you could ask about. Good luck, and feel better:)

Also yesterday I mixed a quarter cup of sugar free jello vanilla pudding with a quarter cup greek plain yogurt. Gave it a little extra flavor from the pudding. I liked it, and got some protein in.

Tachycardia, anyone experienced this?
sunkissed replied to sunkissed's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have been taking those meds for a year, but I figured it out, it was me putting sugar in my plain yogurt lol something as small as that makes a difference -
Im choosing the right foods. Sometimes I wonder if I'm chewing good enough. It doesn't matter if I eat or not I still suffer with indigestion. I have history of an ulcer. I take back about the amount. If it's soft like yogurt I can eat most of it. It's weird how my stomach tolerates edamame or a rice cake but not a lot of other foods.

Kaiser Fremont, where I had my surgery, uses a 40 bougie. As you can see from my stats, I have had good weight loss. Not sure where the sleeve will top out for food consumption. Right now, I eat a max of 3 oz. of firm Protein with about 1/2 cup of veggies and a bite or two of a starch. At Breakfast, I eat 1 cup of greek yogurt, a slice of toast, and a little fruit. I am hungrier lately, but I think it's due to some bad snack choices I've made in the last few weeks. I find eating empty carbs makes me hungrier. Lynda

Hey all- My surgery date is 2-7-18 and i start my liver diet tomorrow which will consist of 2 premier protein shakes and 4oz of meat and veggie for dinner. I can also have unlimited non starchy veggies throughout the day (like spinach, cabbage, ect) along with 1/2 cup of fruit with a shake and a nonfat greek yogurt as a snack. One thing i have been striving to work hard on is my mental. Im sure i will be able to do it and i need to stop letting food fill different voids in my life. Is anyone else starting tomorrow with me?

Hi guys I have been having a really difficult time keeping most foods down. I usually have my protein shake for breakfast and lunch and maybe a 1/2 cup of greek yogurt. I have been making a vegetable soup with chicken stock and I can keep it down some days. I'm afraid that something may be wrong with the band but I have't gone to the Doctor for fear that I may not continue to lose weight. I'm down 60 lbs since 4/24/2012. I'm getting so tired of not being able to eat food, and I mean healthy foods, fish, salad etc. I know this isn't normal but has anyone else experience this?

THE LIQUID DIET COMPLAINING/SUPPORT LOUNGE
Jz0917 replied to V.V.V.'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is hard. I'm on day five and had to endure sitting in a car for 20 mins with the smell of checkers. I do gel yogurt. I added sugar free chocolate syrup and sugar free chocolate pudding. It was actually doable. You could add ranch seasoning to greek yogurt for the salty taste. Add jello powder to vanilla protein powder. So you can have like a key lime pie shake or orange Creamsicle shake, or even a blue raspberry and vanilla shake. The possibilities are endless. Also creamed soups with no chunks work. Minestrone, minus the veggies, works. I hope that helps. -
"I think my biggest problem will be when I go back to work next week. What will I eat for lunch? In the past, I would just hit a fast food place or Subway." I was in the same boat as you. KFC 6 piece dinner, Subway Cold Cut Combo: foot long of course (with chips and bucket of soda), a whole Papa John's medium pizza with pepperoni, extra-cheese, and some onions and peppers for being healthy. Oh, and I could always go for Mickey D's. Now, I pack Breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack and bring it to work every day, and I rarely deviate. Here is a typical sample: Breakfast (may take a couple of hours to eat all of this): 1 Yogurt 1 Hard Boiled Egg 1 coffee 1 Bottle of Water with Crystal Light 1 small can Diet Red Bull Lunch: Protein shake sugar free pudding 1 bottle of water with crystal light Afternoon Snack: Muscle Milk - Protein Pudding Bottle of water with Crystal light 1 coffee (long ride home) Dinner can be Soup or tuna or any of a myriad of other protein rich foods. I hope this helps.

The yogurt is the Dannon Light & Fit. The fruit is blended, so you do not have to worry about being stuck. However, once you are optimally filled, you cannot eat it too quickly, or you will get that uncomfortable, "Oh this is going to take a while to get down" feel.

Getting Back On Track And Restriction

This is such a popular question on here that I have decided to share my own Protein shake recipes with fellow Bandsters. Jay Robb's whey Protein (vanilla) from Whole Foods Market (seems to be the absolute best tasting and I heard one of the most popular. It also has 25 grams of protein per scoop! It's the only kind I ever use now. Not only for the taste, but because he uses what I feel to be a better alternative sweeter called Stevia in it, instead of Aspartame. ENJOY!!! J’s High Protein Full liquid Recipes PHASE 2: Full liquid diet This starts 1 day after surgery NOTE: On the Full Liquid Diet, up to 6-8oz per meal is OK for 3-6 meals a day with lots of Water and mini 2-4oz Snacks in between (snacks are optional, but can create slower weight loss). Make sure to drink LOTS of water. The bulk of your fullness should be water. Stop before feeling full. I am consistently losing weight with these measurements. Remember to drink or eat very slowly. You can train yourself by using tiny baby spoons. The point of this 6 week plan, I am told is partly to shrink your stomach and get you prepared for the first band tightening where you will be limited to very tiny amounts. The doc wants you to get bored of these foods, because after the 6 weeks, you go strictly to solids and water. No more mushy or liquids. All of my recipes include ingredients that can be found at most Whole Foods Markets, Trader Joes or Meijers Grocery. Organic products are all optional, but I (from recent experience) highly recommend for those wanting a more rapid weight loss or healthier system in general. Using skim milk over cream or any other dairy milk will speed it up as well. The nut milks are a great way to sneak in even more nutrients. Most grocery stores carry these organic products now, but you have to look for them. *All my high fat recipes include only healthy or beneficial fats that have not been processed and do not include any hydrogenated oils. Please check the nutrition labels before purchasing any ingredients.* My Personal Tips for More Rapid Weight Loss Using the Liquid Recipes: 1. Use my snack recipes only once a day 2. Choose only my low fat options from my recipe list 3. Stay under 1000 calories. 4. Minimize the amount of sweetener used 5. Choose a Superfoods recipe at least once per day 6. 2 weeks out there was no way I could have traveled. I was sleeved on March 1, 2016 and up until a few weeks ago at 9 months out, I was still puking my guts out. Nearly. Every. Day. When I would travel for a weekend I made sure to take things with me that were "friendly." Greek yogurt and Jello have been the two things that consistently stay down. Best of luck to you on your birthday adventure, and do use your friends for support, whatever that might entail. Sent from my iPhone

Waiting to start the Gastric Bypass nutrition program
jhb724 replied to teedsg's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am new here too. I am taking a 50+ multi vitamin, 1000mg of vitamin c (500 twice a day), Pepcid twice a day and biotin 1000mg once a day, all required by the surgeon prior to surgery coming up in may. I am eating a lot of veggies and have cut out bread, crackers, chips, popcorn and no sugar. I have lost 11 pounds in about 8 weeks. I can only exercise a little due to two previous back surgeries but I have a good outlook on the program. yogurt is an acceptable form of protein, I use oikos triple 0 and it is great. it does have some sugar but no added sugar. good luck and enjoy the journey. -
I! I am in the first week post op, and on full liquids. I bought some vanilla Greek yogurt for protein. However, I think they taste nasty. Any suggestions on how I can make them taste better?

Bored with the clear liquids - 2 days to go
BumbleBree replied to thughes113's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hmm thats strange..my clear liquids were all that plus milk and yogurt..but then again that really isnt clear..I think My Dr. is crazy... -
I was going to say something about the fake Yoplait Greek yogurt, but someone beat me to it. I like Chobani best. My daughter hates Greek yogurt too, but she still eats sugar. I don't and have always liked the tartness. That's okay. This way she won't eat my yogurt. The pineapple and lemon are my favorite. I know about the carbs in the flavored ones, but I still am under 45 for the day so I don't sweat it.

There's a lot going on with you. No wonder you need help. It seems you should call the doctor about the nausea and vomiting. Perhaps he/she will be able to prescribe a different medication. You should also talk to the doctor about your thigh. As far as actions you can take (1) Really push the fluids. In addition to the water and broth, try sugar free popsicles, jello, nonfat no sugar or fruit added Greek yogurt, no sugar added hot chocolate (Swiss Miss makes some). (2) Don't worry too much about protein right now. You can try putting some, maybe half a scoop, of chocolate or vanilla protein powder in the hot chocolate. Do the best you can do on it, but don't stress. In a few days it will be easier to get the protein in. Check in with an update.

Washington Dc Challenge At 2 Weeks Out
mrsteacher posted a blog entry in Sleeved by Dr. Kelly in Mexico
I was given the opportunity to escort a group of fifth graders to Washington, DC this past week. I almost turned it down because I was only 2 weeks postop and I wasn't sure how I could mange the eating on the trip. My husband convinced me to go (it is not everyday I get an opportunity like that...I was replacing a sick teacher who couldn't make it.). My diet at this point is only clear liquids and protein. Dr. Kelly recommends not adding mushies until day 20. Lots of other people report eating food earlier so I wasn't hyper stressed. I was trying to keeping the operation quiet so I was trying to not draw too much attention to myself! I brought protein powder to add to OJ every morning and that is what I had for breakfast each morning. Lunch and dinner was a little tricky. Lunch the first day was provided by the bus company and I just took the turkey off the sandwich and chewed that up into mush and ate it. That went down fine but the cheese stick did not (harder to chew into mush). Our first dinner stop was a buffet. . I ate barely anything (enough to make it look like I was eating). My stomach did not do well with that. It just felt uncomfortably tight. Luckily we did a lot of walking that night through some monuments and it loosed up. The second lunch was really late (2 p.m.) and I ordered hummus at a greek place. It came with warm flat bread (red light food!). The hummus went down fine the bread not so much so. Dinner was at Medieval Times. I did the soup (and attempted a couple bites of the bread) and ate maybe a tablespoon of chicken (did pretty good with that). The next day we did lunch at the Smithsonian and I was really disappointed at my options. In hindsight I probably should have eaten a McD's smoothy. I ordered chicken nugget happy meal. When I say "ate it" I had four french fries and peeled the breading off the chicken nuggets (4 of them) and attempted to eat it. Those did not sit well in my tummy. Turns out that upstairs in the dining area I could have had a yogurt parfait (not advertised downstairs). Dinner that night was a the Pentagon Mall. I had wild mushroom soup (outstanding) and a bit of frozen yogert. Lunch on our last day was at the Golden Corral. Barely ate anything and stopped before feeling uncomfortable. I'd give myself a grade of "C" on my eating on the trip. I don't think anyone thought I was too odd for not eating more. Most people know that I have been trying to lose weight since the beginning of the year. We walked a ton on the trip. I am going to weigh myself tomorrow morning to see if there was any weight loss on the trip due to the exercise. I am happy to report that I barely felt hungry at all!!!! I'm going to back to liquids until my 20th day and then I'll stay with mushies. -

GMO free AND organic protein-no chemicals
giggleblue replied to MoMo12onTheGo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try Pacific Bone Broth or make your own. Try Pacific Organic Soups and strain them. Make your own apple sauce for post-op. Organic Greek yogurt. Flavor water with pieces of organic citrus. Try organic protein shakes - Muscle Milk makes one but I found it too sweet from Stevia. Get organic protein powder from Whole Foods. Try organic baby food for the purée soft foods. Organic chickpeas and make hummus. Organic eggs. I think there are tons of options - think out the box! Add organic protein powder unflavored to everything if you aren't going to drink the shakes with chemicals. -
What are the first foods to try in week 4
ShelterDog64 replied to CVanPelt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Is your week 4 purees or soft foods? Every plan is different, I was on full food by the end of week 4. Good soft foods: refried Beans with cheese, ricotta with sauce, cottage cheese with pureed fruit, soft scrambled eggs (for most people, not for me), yogurt, softer cheeses. I mixed unflavored Protein into most everything I ate. Like @@amandastearns said, shakes are a good option still at that point, especially if the food choices are complicated and you don't have a lot of time to spend worrying about food. -
Hi everyone. I am almost exactly 3 months post op. I am worried a little tho. Currently I can eat maybe 2 bites of anything, soft cheese, yogurt, banana, but I get so much pain when I eat. It's like that's all my body will allow me to eat. It is so frustrating and annoying. I am hungry. I feel hungry but yet I do not want to eat anything at all because I don't feel like suffering for the next 30mins while my stomach tries to digest. So my question is... Will this pain every go away? When will I get to eat more than 2 bites of food without suffering? Thank you all so much!
