  1. My biggest issue with post-op diet was that it was so boring. I was thankful I was allowed to puree soups in addition to the protein drinks, yogurt, and SF pudding/jello. It is over before you know it, and then you are on to fretting about other food choices

I wish I had written this....

OMG! THis is the absolute truth for the majority of us here. I simply don't buy it except on rare occasions, I do buy greek yogurt though and put whipped cream on it.... So delicious with just a little bit of sugar. Love it. Thanks for sharing this John....
  3. sleevedjune, thanks for your response and actually answering my question. Your response is super helpful because i think i will more than likely eat similarly to you when i can eat again. I have already had the surgery and everyday i eat yogurt, beans and soup so this doesnt really apply to me right now too much. i have put cheese and sour cream in my beans though (less than a tsp of sour cream less than an oz of cheese) and i was wondering if i might be halting weight loss in some way as a result. i think i have done great with weight loss (i am down 22 lbs in 13 days) but want to be very conscious about food choices and planning for the future. i have done south beach a million times and so i am tempted to say low carbs work for me, but i can be honest about the fact that i am usually on or off. if i am dieting, i am eating nothing of plan. if i am not dieting, i am eating a whole pizza. thats the way it has always been. i have never ever really done moderation, its always been all or nothing so i am very curious about the effectiveness of eating things in moderation. i can tell you i love my little refried bean meal and i have never eaten the whole thing, i have never even eaten all the sour cream, i get full or tired of eating before that is an option. i am also not a big sweet eater i am fat from food much more than dessert, large volumes of food so i was mostly trying to determine if i have damned myself with real cheese and sour cream. also one day, when i can eat food again, i plan to cook and i am wondering how necessary it is to change meal ingredients i would usually use as opposed to the portions of the meal i consume.

    Eating and exercise habits

I was sleeved 6/6/13 & I'm down 40 lbs today from surgery weight (230). I may not be far enough out for what you're trying to gather but I figured I'd share. I eat cheese. I LOVE cheese & can't live without it. I eat Beans because they're a good source of Protein & I like them more than eggs. I put sour cream on my lettuce wrapped taco meat because its a good source of Calcium & we're only talking a tablespoon. I eat full on cream Soups & the real deal salad dressings & mayo but I DO NOT eat potato chips, Pasta, rice or crackers. I've had a couple pieces of low carb wheat bread, a tortilla to hold my wrap together (I tore off as much tortilla as I could get away with) a couple of times & protein enriched crisps. I've had no sugar added frozen yogurts, fudgsicles & ice creams. Never the real full on blue bell or Ben & Jerry's. I've also had 3 sugar free Cookies. I average 80 carbs a day. I go over & under often but the reason I stay away from full sugar cookies, cakes, Icecreams & stuff like potato chips & crackers & bread is because they are triggers for me. I used to eat a whole loaf of French bread smeared in butter. YUM-O! Now I aim for 800 calories, 80 grams of protein & try to exercise at least 5 days a week. I do a minimum of 30 mins cardio & 15 mins of strength training. My husband has told me my legs are getting very tone. I want to include exercise to tone my body. I have a friend that lost 130 lbs at her 1 year mark but she never exercised & has LOTS of loose skin. I lost 25 lbs my first month & only 7.5lbs each additional month after that. I imagine I will lose approx 7 lbs a month which will land me at a healthy BMI weight of approx 130 for 5'3.5" & hopefully I'll be nice & tone too. Fingers crossed. Good luck!

    Gluten Free, Dairy Free Recipe?

Someone posted this on Fb group: Homemade Ding Dongs. Original recipe is from The Diva Dish and I adapted it to be safe for our allergens. These are seriously amazing. My 12 yr old took a bite and said, it tastes like one you get in a bakery! :0) The recipe is long and can look like it takes forever at first but honestly it doesn't. It really didn't take long at all and it is super simple. Very messy though..and don't make these while on a diet because ummm..those scraps of cake left from cutting out and leftover whipped cream look sooooo mighty yummy Homemade Ding Dongs Adapted from The Diva Dish Blog Cake: 2 cups cake flour to make gluten free sub 2 cups all purpose gluten free flour (I use one consisting of brown & sweet rice flour + tapioca and arrowroot) + 1 tsp xanthan gum or guar gum 1/3 cup cocoa powder 1 1/2 tsp baking soda 2 tsp baking powder (or 1 tsp baking soda + 1 tsp cream of tartar for corn free 4 Tbsp arrowroot or potato starch (can use cornstarch if it is safe) 1/4 cup melted coconut oil 1 container coconut milk yogurt (I used Raspberry, it doesn't have to be but it sounded kinda decadent 1 1/2 cups coconut milk 3/4 cup maple syrup 3 tsp vanilla 1/2 cup honey (you can use 1/2 cup sugar if you want instead) Filling: 1 can of coconut milk, must be full fat. Place it in the fridge overnight or in the freezer for an hour 1/2 cup powdered sugar (blend sugar with arrowroot flour 1 cup of sugar & 2tbsp arrowroot for corn free) 1 tsp vanilla powder or extract Coating 1 bag enjoy life chocolate chips 1/4 cup coconut oil Directions Preheat oven to 350. Mix dry ingredients together, whisk until mixed. Then mix wet ingredients together until combined. Slowly add dry to wet just until combined. Spray 9x13 inch cake pan with coconut cooking spray or line with parchment. Bake 25-30 minutes until center is set. Cool & turn upside to release onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment For filling. Scoop out the solid cream from the can only into a glass bowl. Whisk coconut milk with an electric hand or stand mixer. Mix in sugar & vanilla. Keep whisking until it gets thickened and fluffy like whipped cream. Return to fridge until you are ready to use it. It will get liquidy if you let it stay at room temp. For coating: Place chips & coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl. Heat for 30 second intervals, stirring inbetween until it is melted and smooth. To Assemble: Use a small round cookie cutter to cut the cake into circles. Make sure it is cool. For best result place them in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes so they are cool to the touch. Use a small paring knife and cut out a circle in the middle of the cakes. Then I used my finger to press around the inside of the hole to make it bigger inside for more cream mixture. Fill each of the holes with the cream mixture. Flatten out the top that you cut out and place back over. Then carefully dip the cake into the chocolate. I found it worked best to sit it in there and spoon it over the top and sides. Place back in the fridge to cool. Store in the fridge!
  6. Aldo, I'm an RN in a day surgery area and went back to work on post op day 10, nobody at work knows I had surgery. I've never had a problem with food, fluids or physical demands. Early post op I ate yogurt every day for lunch and threw half of it out when nobody was looking!

Preop Diet And The Journey Begins!

OMG!!! Yesterday was so hard until i went to bed at 8pm just to keep from eating. Are we to be concerned about sugar as well? I have decided to track my fat, calories and protein to ensure my diet is low calories and low fat, but the sugar content is extremely high. However, I did manage to get at least 68 grams of protein. My bariatric coordinator wanted me to get between 40 and 80 grams since I am concern about losing my hair....I worked hard at it. This morning i am drinking a Yoplait Greek Yogurt Smoothie which has 14 grams of carbs but only 2.5 grams of fat with packed with 30 grams of protein especially since I added a scoop of vanilla whey protein. Sometime today i am going to call my coordinator because there is only so much oatmeal, salad, fruits and vegetables I can eat within two weeks. I wonder if I can have wheat bread just one slice.

    Is juicing ideal

I agree with the previous posters. Juicing waste so much of the fruit. It'd be better to make a smoothie with a blender if you're not big on eating fruits and vegetables. I like to use frozen berries, half of a frozen banana, Greek yogurt, kale or spinach, and chocolate protein powder. It taste like a chocolate shake!

    Please help me with protein!

My current Breakfast of choice is vanilla Greek non-fat yogurt (6 oz) mixed with a scoop of the Syntrax double stuffed cookie. I divide it in to 4 serving so 1.5 ounces was about 9 grams of Protein.....doesn't sound that impressive but it is only 1.5 ounces.... I also like the syntrax fuzzy navel, but it has to be over tons of ice and I sip slowly. I just do not care for the protein taste though, it's a struggle!!!!! HW 312, pre-op (lap-band) 294, pre-op (RNY) 255, surgery date 2/11/13, goal weight 154, current weight 238
  10. Don't think I've lost a ton in my 3 month supervised diet but I have been saying goodbye to my "friends" pizza, pastas, corndogs, fries, soda etc I wish I could say I've followed a strict diet but I know I'm going to do great after surgery... It's nice to "part" with these foods and go on with my life! I have to say I have fallen in love with Greek yogurt especially Fage and will eat that for dessert any day! Yum! I love watermelon and my Nut says its fine since its not junk and a great source of Water so I eat that for Snacks. I love tacos and have omitted the shell and just crumbled three tortilla chips on for crunch...I had jaw surgery last year and was on soft foods for over 6 months...I have to have crunch up until this surgery lol
  11. I am about 14.5 months post op and have been maintaining my goal weight (though of course I would love to lose "just another 5 pounds....lol"). Breakfast: Typically I have a sugar-free latte along with something small....either a fat-free cheese stick or hard boiled egg. Lunch: When I am working I have the same exact lunch every day. I'm a creature of habit. I have a small scoop of chicken salad (1/3-1/2 c.), with a small salad on the side (a little bit of spinach leaves (maybe 1/2 c.) a little shredded cheddar cheese on top, a couple cucumber slices, and a couple piece of broccoli. Topped with about 1/2 t. fat free italian dressing). I have a snack in the late afternoon - usually dannon light and fit greek yogurt Dinner: about 3-4 oz of a Protein (either chicken, fish, or beef), along with a veggie.... maybe a small starch last if I still have room. Snack - I have a snack in the evening but usually limit it to a protein hot chocolate or cheese stick. Protein shakes: I will usually switch out dinner with a Protein shake a couple of times a week, or switch out a weekend lunch with a protein shake. So I would say I'm doing probably 3 Protein shakes a week, and probably 3-4 Protein drinks (ie hot chocolate). Water - I drink tons of water.... between 80-100 oz. daily Exercise - SO important to maintaining the loss. I run 4 times a week and cross train on off days with 1 rest day.

    Java!

Today's Day 7. I'm allowed to start full liquids, hot cereal, yogurt & cream soups today. And skim milk. I can have a cup of coffee. I actually sang Lionel Richie's 'Hello' to my coffee pot a few minutes ago. I am way too excited over coffee. I had some cream of wheat (for the first time in my life, actually) earlier and I feel fine. I don't feel nauseous or anything. The port site is a little bit sore. I sneezed this morning and had an "OMGWTF" pain moment. I think that's normal. My main incision left some blood spots on my shirt that I slept in where the first steri strip fell off (I think it came off too early). It's not a ton of blood, so I'm going to hold off on calling. I have an appointment on Wednesday, anyways. Yesterday (Day 6) was pretty good, aside from the aforementioned port pain. I actually went to the grocery store and managed to buy what I needed, yet not make it weigh more than a gallon of milk (the most weight I can lift). I had a friend come and move my TV BACK to my living room from my bedroom -- I moved the rest of the stuff (cable box, dvd player), piece by piece so it wasn't too heavy. The ONE friend (who is more an acquaintance I go to happy hour with than anything) out of the six that I asked. Five people who had told me 'if you need anything after your surgery, call!'. Well I texted and called. Nobody answered. See who comes and hangs out with you after YOUR surgery next time. Or who is there when you need a ride to the store or to the laundromat. I'm doing everything my damn self; figure out a way to do things without me constantly driving you around. I'm sorry, but I'm currently super disgusted with the people who are supposed to be my friends. End angry rant. My laundry basket also currently weighs less than a gallon of milk, so I think I'm going to do that at some point this week, too. Maybe on Wednesday after my appointment. I figure I'll already be out, I can get an oil change and get some laundry done. I'm basically "resting" (sitting around) at each of those places except when the laundry needs moved from the washer to the dryer and folded, so it's not like it's "heavy housework". Also, since when is vacuuming "heavy housework"? You're walking around, pushing something that pretty much moves on its own. And now that I've rambled on for 30 minutes, I'm going to drink my coffee.

End of first week post surgery!

Tomorrow will be 1 week post surgery. Today I'm not just having protien shakes but have added yogurt, cream of wheat cereal, fat free ricotta cheese and creamed soups. I'm not a hot cereal lover so that didn't go over too well but everything else I had small portions of and liked it. I even had a small fat free pudding which was good too. I've got to remember to fit my protien shakes in there too inbetween but sometimes it is hard. Maybe once I get back to work tomorrow I'll have a better system and I won't be taking 2 naps during the day! That sort of messes things us too but I figured I needed the rest.
  15. At 8 months post RNY I've realized I need to keep better track of my nutrients. I've written all of my food in a journal since surgery but haven't tracked nutrients for several months. Started tracking on My Fitness Pal and found I'm over....way over, where I should be. I've always struggled with making satisfying low calorie, low fat meals, apparently I still do. Now that I have quantity under better (not perfect) control my next hurdle is meal planning for optimum health. I'd love to see how others do it. It being eating 60-100 grams of Protein and 60-100 grams of carbs while staying satisfied and eating whole, less processed foods. If you do it dairy free even better....yogurt, cottage cheese, milk and I have issues. Please, please, please share your daily menus with me! If you use MFP and have journaled your diet and are willing to share it please friend me, my username is Goodnuff there too. Thanks.

    Weak and Shakey

I was banded 9/26, 10 days ago. I have been on protein shakes and broth (and 1/2 cup low carb yogurt once) ever since. I am getting weaker and now feel even shakey. I know I am supposed to go on mushies Monday but I think I really need to eat something. I have to work and my students are not the easiest bunch (teens with emotional issues). Does anyone know if there are rules and guidelines to mushy foods? Anything that I can puree? or ??? Thanks.

At the risk of embarrassing myself....

I had a muscle milk on the 3rd day after my surgery...blasted it out after about an hour. Called the nutritionist on Mon. said that I couldn't have that at work when I went in Tues. She said my stomach just wasn't ready. Suggest yogurt smoothies. Still some of those issues but not so bad. I had 1/2 c skim milk with coffee, smoothie at luch. Had to GO at 2:00. But I must be healing cuz it hasn't happened since.
  20. GenaW828

    Must try!

My nutritionalist didn't give me any restriction on yogurt like that... I just have to eat certain kinds...Kroger's carb masters ...but this was before this came out
  21. I did. I had to start mixing mine with other things- like half a Protein Shake with a half cup of yogurt. I was told by my nutritionist that to much Protein at one time can cause nausea. It helped me to just cut mine with yogurt or milk (1%).
  22. Lynn B

    What's the mushie stage?

Pureen and strained sounds like it may be full liquid - are they requiring you to strain out any chunks? This is my full liquid menu: Beverages: Skim or 1% milk Low sugar, decaffeinated, non-carbonated Fluid (crystal light, Fruit2o, etc) Low sugar, low fat, high Protein supplements (CIB, Protein shakes) Dairy products Low fat, light yogurt SF, FF pudding & custard Low fat cottage cheese (blended) Soup Low fat cream Soups thinned down with 1 cup low fat milk (strained of chunks or blended) Low fat broth Miscellaneous Plain hot cream of wheat or otameal (must be pourable consistancy) SF popsicle unsweetened applesauce SF Gelatin I am on this diet until 3 weeks post op. Good luck,
  23. Lynn B

    Post Surgery Gear??!!

I stocked up on (enough for 2 weeks) Cream Soups, broth, SF Popsicles, 0 cal flavored water (this has been a life saver), yogurt, protien powder, carb countdown milk, SF Jello. Make sure you have liquid tylenol (I got adult strength at WalMart), a heating pad can also help with gas, Gas-x chewables. Set up a comfy place to sleep if you have a recliner bring your pillows and blankets down to it because it was really more comfortable during the first few days - especially if you wont have anyone home to help you out of bed when you finally wake up. I brought a book and magazine to the hospital but was to spacy to concentrate on it for long. When you get in your room if they don't provide you with mouth swabs ask for them - they were great to get rid of the dry mouth, lips and throat from the breathing tube. You might not be allowed to drink anything until day 2 (I wasn't). Good luck,
  24. Pianoman, I am assuming that you are on a modified (or full) liquid diet (stage 3) - this is what we are released from the hospital on. The following items fall into a full liquid diet: Beverages: Skim or 1% milk Low sugar, decaffeinated, non-carbonated Fluid Low sugar, low fat, high Protein supplements Dairy products Low fat, light yogurt SF, FF pudding & custard Low fat cottage cheese (blended) Soup Low fat cream Soups thinned down with 1 cup low fat milk (strained of chunks or blended) Low fat broth Miscellaneous Plain hot cream of wheat or otameal (must be pourable consistancy) SF popsicle unsweetened applesauce SF Gelatin The stiches on your stomach are still trying to heal and eating something as solid as eggs may not be a good idea. Although five weeks does seem a bit long. I will be on this eating plan until my 3 week post op appointment and then the nutritionist will evaluate me to move to stage 4. If you really need a change I would encourage you to try something above that you might not have thought of and then call your doctor on Tuesday and discuss your eating plan. It is better to be safe than sorry. Good luck,
  25. Hi Ramona - I just had the surgery August 3. I ate sugar-free pudding and Jello, chicken broth, and yogurt, mostly, and drank coffee, tea, and Water. Around day 3, I got really bad heartburn and gas problems that kept me from eating or drinking much of anything from day 4 through 7. Today, though, is day 8, and I'm feeling back to normal (thank goodness.) My energy is almost back, I have no more heartburn at all, and I'm able to eat solid foods again. And, by the way, I've lost 11 pounds already, so I guess that's the best news of all. Good luck to you!
