Why Did You Choose The Sleeve Over The Others?
4ALongerLife replied to Amie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lapband is not as effective as the other two surgeries. Lapbanders generally don't keep the weight off. To that effect, sleeve and bypass keep it off if you use the tool as it's intended. But there is nothing foreign stuck inside my body (as is the case with lapband), there is no open port (as is lapband) and there is not upkeep at a dr's office x amount of time to get a fill (yes we have general health follow ups, but IDK that seems better to me). Lapband you are sticking a foreign object into your body and it can slip, erode, scar the tummy, have issues. Just wasn't for me. I will say for sleeve, it's scary as your tummy is split in half (or less rather) and then shut up and can come undone. But I liked that idea better than having my guts rearranged and I don't have to worry on malabsorption (as RNY, aka bypass). Dumping syndrome scares me to be honest, which is more likely to occur with RNY as you have less area to travel through your body if you eat that sugar filled snack. I understand that you can still encounter it with sleeve, but sleeve just seemed less hard on the body in my opinion. (then there is my experience but..... I did this to accompany my workouts, I did those daily previously so I view the sleeve as a tool to help me overcome my issues with food - it MAKES me eat less and so far, it's working - too well - I'm still going through the food progressions to solids but I'm not eating enough which is stalling my weight loss) I had crappy insurance too btw, so any of the procedures was an out of pocket expense for me. I've had complications, possibly having another one now, but you know what? I'm 50+ lbs down and I don't regret it. I'm excited to go to the gym and now I have to make myself DO LESS in there. Who knew? Now if I can get my head hunger/emotional eating and triggers figured out, this lil mama will be more and more of a loser. Yeah! I love being a loser! Good luck on your decision! -
Hi everyone, today I am going to have my first fill. I have been very hugry up untill today and I hope that this will help. Any suggestions on how I should get through the next week....I know that there is a chance of sliming. I have never slimed and I hope to keep it that way. Should I expect to lose more weight soon after the fill? I really hope so because I have been stuck at the same weight for about 3 weeks!

Patlong, how long were you on them? I don't think for 1 month that there would be any long term effects - I read they are supposed to be used for no more than 8-12 weeks. Can the side-efects you speak of be for long term use or short term also? With any type of medication, prescription or otherwise there are risks and side effects. I always try to do research to begin with, and then make an informed decision. Im in a vicious cycle - eating right and exercising but exercising makes me starve - to lose weight before my banding I have to exercise and around and around I go lol Thanks for the info

Need to vent about weight and habits
Lilypop posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am about a year and two months in and I’m scared to death about gaining. My food intake in a sitting with a chicken breast and salad is about 6 ounces and rice yes I said rice but never everyday about once or twice a week at max I intake about 2 ounces if not 3 and the meat is about 3 ounces at max. Other days I’ll take in about 7 ounces and I’m scared I’m stretching my stomach with these ounces. I do walk my 11-15k steps in the day but I catch myself snacking on a piece of toast or pickles as my meal with nothing else for hours on end. Maybe I have to take it back a bit and control it but even tho my weight has been between 158-161 lb I feel like imma stretch it and that 6-7 ounces will kill me. How has your struggles been? Anyone else have some venting. It’s just what’s on my mind. -
I have had lot of hair fall before my VSG surgery due to PCOS and hair fall is said to happen more from the 6th week onwards and I am freaking out. Any good Biotin shampoos out there that can help in restoring the lost hair and make my hair regrow?

Honestly, today is just one week post op and I haven't found much of anything to help me. The emotions are still all over the place. Ive been told it's typically 2 weeks or so before you're back to normal. I hope I didn't scare you. Some people have zero problems with the hormones causing emotional issues, some people have only a slight problem and then others like me have a pretty hard time. There's really no way to know how each of us will react, but I think it's better to be prepared for this one just in case. The most important thing is to have your support person understand that this is a possibility. That way they are prepared and they understand it is only temporary. I was truly, legitimately ANGRY about having lost only 1 pound in the 5 days post op. I was crying and yelling and wanting to call my surgeon and scream at him. Of course I now see how absolutely illogical and ridiculous that was but in the moment it was very real and the fury I was feeling was real. That's just an example. Most of my emotions have leaned more to very sad and crying as opposed to anger. I was crying because I felt hungry and I thought that meant I was too fat and disgusting to succeed at WLS because I kept telling myself I shouldn't feel hungry. Just things like that... completely illogical things. But, as we know, emotions aren't always logical. So, just have your support person be there for you and show you kindness and compassion no matter how utterly ridiculous your mood swings may appear to them. And if things really do get too bad, your surgical team is familiar with this happening to patients and will be able to help you. Perhaps maybe even prescribing a mood stabilizer or anxiety medication for a couple of weeks if needed. June 12, 2017 I had my lap-band removed, my gallbladder removed and received an RNY. I'm just four weeks out and I can drink water easily. It's not forever for some of us. It was a huge concern for me. I used to be able to drink a half of a bottle at once and while I can't do that I can take three huge swallows with no pain as long as my stomach is empty. Can't wait to hear your journey!

I had my band "installed" in 2007 & lost 125 pounds. Like everyone I said "I'll never put it on again. In the meantime my husband of 48 years died..but I still held my own. Some weight came back but I stayed under 200 for several years. A year & a half ago my sister convinced me to go on match.com and I met a wonderful man to whom I been engaged for a year & a half- and then I was so happy that I started to eat again & gain weight! Just about six weeks ago I got enough nerve up to make an appt to see my surgeon - after 2 plus years. I thought he would be furious with me but I was wrong. I took the first steps of seeing the nutritionist and the psychologist and last Friday I got the first fill in over two years. 2 days of liquids then 2 days of soft and tomorrow regular food - but carefully measuring. My fiance is wonderfully encouraging and I have 9 lbs off already. I know it's only fluid but gone is gone and I'm on my way to 50 or 60 lbs - down from 230. I'm 75 years old - work full time - have a man who loves me for what I am - not what I look like and soon will have the body I want again. Wish me luck!

The very best advice is the same thing that drove me crazy in the first couple of weeks... Stay hydrated! And walk (I had that one down). :) Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Hang in there and keep doing what you are supposed to be doing. I am almost 7 months out and I have hit a stall 4 times so far. Stalls suck but they are a normal part of the process :-)

I took my one month photos today. Hard to believe it's been just over 4 weeks already. I'm feeling good and seem to be having more energy. I was working on purging my closet before I finish unpacking (we moved just before my surgery). I managed to get the living room/kitchen pretty much done before surgery, then I was recovering and couldn't lift or move much, then Christmas so I'm finally getting to my bedroom. How are all the other first weekers doing? I can't wait to see the changes another month will bring....

I am about 4 weeks post op fro Gastric Bypsss. I still can not hold down chicken, turkey, eggs, cauliflower rice, and some cheeses like a mozerrella in extra virgin olive oil. I am throwing up like every single day within 3-4 bites of my small meal. Thank God I am able to hold down the portein shakes and most cheeses otherwise I would be sunk. Anyone else experience this? Was there Anything that made it easier to hold food down? Any tips or tricks? All advice would be greatly appreciated!

I gained 8lbs in the hospital. It comes off fast. I've lost 25lbs since I've been home (2 weeks tomorrow).

I had three bites of prime rib at my in-laws. Chewed really well, went down fine. But I don't eat pork at all.

Need exercise inspiration- 35 lbs from goal!
rharriet62 replied to juliegeraci's topic in Fitness & Exercise
WOW. The end is in sight for you! 35 lbs! That is KILLER! You sound like me ... 5'8, size 18, but I weight a lot more than you. I'm many, many pounds away from my goal! I work out 5-6 days a week, running, elliptical, lifting, etc. Now, here's an idea: go buy a CUTE pair of size 16 jeans, shorts, whatever, since that is when you are getting PS. Make yourself a deal that when they fit, you'll set up the consultation (or some other reward). Try them on 3 days a week and work out! You might have to just gut it out and start exercising...maybe you need to change your focus since you are "comfortable" at a size 18 (it's not good enough for me yet). Work out for your heart, your lung capacity, to lower your cholesterol...take the next step to health ... the weight is almost all off, so now work on the stuff you can't see that will really cause you to be the most healthy you can be. Good luck! You should be so proud of your accomplishment! I'm totally envious!!! -
i was sleeved 8/6 and i had the same issue for the first 2 weeks. a couple of times i took a small mouthful, chewed and spit. i just wanted to feel texture in my mouth and have some flavor. it actually worked and i felt satisfied. now i have started with the mushy foods...yogurt, cottage cheese, creamed soups. it is very hard to eat. you eat so little and feel so full. this will pass too and soon we will all find our own "normal" routine. don't listen to your brain, tell it your body is in charge now.

I am on Seasonale, so I only get my period every three months anyway. When I was due for my first post-op period, it didn't come. I was terrified I was pregnant, because I'd read about how the surgery can make you more fertile and a lot of women get pregnant unexpectedly post-op. My husband and I even used back-up birth control for the first month or so post-op to be on the safe side. I ended up taking three pregnancy tests, all negative. I continued taking my pill and the next time I was due for my period, it came like normal.

Scared it's going to slip/stretch...
TeganRheana replied to TeganRheana's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thankyou! :frown: I haven't actually felt hungry yet which is amazing but is annoying at the same time because I am basically eating when I know I need to and it makes it hard becuase I can't tell if I'm more full then what I was before I ate....lol...confusing I know! That is great to know about upto 1 cup of food per 2hrs...currently I have been having about 1/2cup of food every 2.5-3hrs...and I still haven't been hungry - so I might stick with that until the 2 weeks post op is up. I was banded on 7 May - 4days ago. Thanks again for your suggestions  -
I'm really struggling this week to get calories in and with heartburn. I'm sooooooo tired! I'll be 3 weeks out tomorrow. I have my post op appt Tuesday. I've thrown up a couple times bc I've eaten too fast. That's definitely not fun.

Hi All, I see I'm not the only one MIA. I've somewhat become busy in the evening that I don't remember to log on much less log in. Haven't had too much success this week or the last few weeks. I'm not losing weight but I'm losing inches. I sometimes spend so much energy on the weight I forget about the inches. I'm in a size 16 pants. I think those whitepants of mine are a size 12. My daughter is a size 10 and they are too big on her. Boy, to think I was once that size. Yesterday, someone asked me "what's next after I reach my goal weight?" I looked at her and said "I don't know." I really haven't thought that far ahead. I really don't know and it kind of scares me. I don't have a plan. Other than trying to maintain the goal weight, I don't know. So I ask you, "what's next after you reach your goal weight." w.
