5 years post op - pain, swelling and issues
TrueFlame posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello All, I had the lap band put in five years ago, and it hasn't been the best journey. I've had two revisions due to the band being punctured at fills, one in which it snapped and was poking me all over inside. We've never been able to find the sweet spot...it's either no restriction or so tight I can't get good Protein down. So in the past 5 months or so I have had unexplained swelling in my feet, ankles and calves. My regular physcian says it's due to sitting at work. Long story short, I had my band released a little bit (like .5 cc) and it was so loose that I had no restriction. She put more in, no restriction filled it back to where it was too tight at one point and still no restriction. I am now scheduled for an endoscopy to see if I have band erosion. Honestly, I feel like my body is rejecting the band. I'm holding Fluid everywhere...my belly feels like I have a bowling ball in it, my shoulders ache and my chiropractor today confirmed that he can tell my body has changed..he said my body is much tighter indicating to him I am full of fluids. My body hurts, my feet, ankles and knees are the worst...I can hardly stand to walk. I can't get comfortable when I try to sleep So I am wondering, have any of you been through this, and if you have, what did you do to help yourself? I cut out as much sodium in my diet to see if that was an issue, but it hasn't made a difference. TIA! -
I am 7 weeks post op and am having difficulty with vomiting after eating meat or fish. I will chew it for at least 60 seconds and even after a bite or two I will throw up everything and it tends to continue for a few hours. I grill my meat or broil it with no oils and I do not understand why I can't keep it down. I can't even do protein shakes as they make me sick so i'm living off of yogurt and i have oatmeal in the morning. My doctor put me on meds but it's making it worse. I'm not losing a ton of weight. I have to add that my surgery was a revision to 2 previous nissen fundoplications so I also had work on my esophagus . Can anyone recommend anything else I can eat to get my protein? Also, any suggestions on incorporating fish or chicken without getting sick. Ren

MoreNO replied to loridee11's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone, Lapband did not work for me, not only i didn't lose enough weight or got healthier but 1- I never got adjusted correctly, I would always throw up 2 - My body rejected the lapband after 5 years, it wanted to come out through my belly, it left me an ugly scar, doctor removed it and had to leave it open in order to heal months later got revision to sleeve, and currently revising to bypass. I have 1 more nut appt next month and then they will submit to insurance. i have a few comorbidities (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, GERD) so I really need to change my life around or I will not live to see my grandkids. -

I just got home yesterday from having sleve done with Aceves. I can't say enough good things. There was another lady there who had just had a revision and was doing amazingly well. I had the pleasure if talking with her and she is highly educated, spent a lot of time researching and was thrilled with her results. If you private message me I will see if she fill vontact you hirectly if interested. I know that during my research he has been praised for being the best at revisions. He's cautious and gives you extra home at thd hospital to recover. He has performed a lot of revisions and that's why you read so much, many doctors refuse to mess with it. Do your research and it will give you the piece of mind you need. -

Day 3 or 4, I felt really good with the exception of stomach muscular pain (like overworked ab muscles). After 7 years lap band, I had the band to sleeve revision which may be why for my speedy recovery. Decided to add this: I did have trouble feeling hungry and that bothered me, but after day 16 when my stomach swelling went down, the fake hunger feelings dropped off. I take flinstones complete. I had a revision and switched surgeons for second surgery. First surgeon had me buying 100 dollar bottles of vitamin. I threw them up all the time. Now I take one flinstone in morning and one at night and I feel so much better and it’s lighter on my stomach. Also much cheaper.

Band to Sleeve revision with a BMI of 31
bamagurl replied to beesam's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was just approved for a revision to a sleeve and my current BMI is 31. Of course, every patient and insurance is different. I have now had 2 slips, each a year apart, and my surgery is scheduled for 2 June. Wishing you the best of luck. -
Wow, that’s rough. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone being outright denied surgery because of the psychological evaluation (not that it’s never happened; I just haven’t heard about it). I have heard of people being required to get psychological treatment before getting approval for surgery. Did the psychologist say anything about that? Maybe you can wait until he sends the full report and see what it says, because it seems very strange that he would just say you’re a lost cause and will never be able to get the surgery. A lot of us have a bad relationship with food and issues with emotional eating and still get the surgery. Is it possible to get a second opinion From another psychologist? That said, you probably shouldn’t get the surgery until you’re mentally and emotionally ready for it. It’s a big commitment and a hard journey, and you pretty much only have one shot (ok, you can get a revision, but even that doesn’t usually work as well as the original surgery) and you don’t want to waste it. So it might be worth getting some treatment for your emotional eating before you get surgery.

Two days post opp - any advice would be appreciated
hypn posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Everybody, Quick introduction, my name is Andre, I reside in South Africa. Am I band to sleeve revision and I was sleeved 2 days ago on Monday 19th at 4pm. Tomorrow I need to go for a leak test as a safety check and then it's up to me to create my destiny. Since discharge from hospital I have stuck with only clear liqueds (mostly sports drinks) and today tried to sip down my second cup of tee this week. I am not aware of Isopure in South Africa and will look for a replacement to drink from next week. Only real pain I have is when ever I need to "burp" more like air escaping than burping. Has any of the more experienced sleevsters got a tip for this problem. Other than that I am incredibly tired, sleeping approx 22 hours out of 24 but I trust this will also dissapear pretty quickly. Any advice that members might have would be appreciated. Regards Andre -

Recover time after surgery
dbrar88 replied to Monday_thru_Friday's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ended up staying in the hospital for 2 nights...but I had a band to sleeve revision. The nausea was my worst part, but thanks to a great nurse/docs, it was kept under control. I then had to ride him 4 1/2 hours, so I was a bit sore from the ride. I spent the next two days sleeping off and on, but on the 3rd day I made myself get up and out and had no problems. I would give yourself a good 7 days from the time you leave the hospital to get used to your new stomach. Don't rush it!!! Debra Band to Sleeve Revision 9/27/10 Dr. David Kim -
Dr. Aceves :-)

Sara, I am not sure about the band revision cost of surgery. The website for Dr. Aceves is www.mexicalibariatric.com and they should have everything listed for price. You could also call or email them. Nina, who schedules all the surgeries, is wonderful and quick to get you any answers that you need. Information that I kept says: Lap Gastric Sleeve after lap band ( includes band removal) $12,500 Hope this helps. -
Hi guys! As I am preparing for my band to bypass revision, my doctor made it crystal clear I have to stop smoking. I have been smoking for about 5 years, which is terrible for me to even say, and I know I have to. if it came down to it I know I could just torture myself and do it cold turkey, but I am asking for advice or things that people have done that has helped them. I am considering the nicorette gum but again just asking for advice! Thank you!

Dr. Aceves :-)

Most times the erosion itself isn't painful but the fix is. :tongue_smilie:( Surgery to remove it and repair the stomach is an ouchy. Erosion can have painful symptoms but it usually does not. There was a person that went to Huacuz (gahhh) and she had nothing but one problem after another with fills. She could not get restriction. Everyone thought it was a faulty band with a leak in the diaphragm of the band. She wanted to revise to a sleeve and couldn't get her insurance to help. She finally went to Aceves for a revision and turns out it was an erosion. The reason fills were not working was that stomach acid ate through the plastic part of the band and there was a huge hole there. She said that Aceves said it was the worst erosion he's ever seen. Only the buckle of the band was not in her stomach. She had a rough recovery due to the damage and repairs to her stomach. She had no pain, just reflux and no restriction. She said that he told her it would take a good six months before her stomach was healed enough to revise to a sleeve. -
Well, my Insurance won't cover the sleeve for me. They will only cover gastric bypass, lapband, or stomach stapling. I am so bummed right now. I go to meet with the surgeon on June 12th to see what is best for me but I do NOT want gastric bypass. Looks like I may have to go with the band. The only way they will pay for the sleeve is if I need a revision after the band. Not cool!

Going for surgery but having erosive gastritis
ProudGrammy replied to Kawkab's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
i said the following statement up above post IMO i agree with surgeon - i would have the bypass over the sleeve any day of the week and twice on sundays!! ________________________________________________________________ @Kawkab i didn't say the above statement correctly even i got confused when i re-read it!! i meant to say i think bypass would be a better choice if you already have reflux many OP choose the gastric bypass over the sleeve to avoid acid reflux I hardly ever had heartburn in the past no revision for me from sleeve sleeve and have walked "arm and arm" almost 6 years"we" couldn't be happier 105 lbs down and maintaining (fluctuate a little) G O A L !!! good luck bud with your important decision kathy -
Keloid scars after surgery?
mercedes75 replied to MelissaRose24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I developed 3 keloid scars and and one of them kept getting irritated because it rubbed my bra. I had surgery 1 Dec 2015 and about 6 months later during my doctor follow up I asked him if he could remove them. I scheduled and outpatient minor surgery (scar revision) and everything went well. I was given a cream to put on the wounds for 5 days, I think it was some type of steroid to prevent another scar from forming. Two weeks later it was completely healed. I do have a bit of discoloration in that area but with time you can barely tell. By the way, I lost 100 lb 9 months after my surgery I used to weight 282 lb. In total I lost 127 lb and as of today I weight 156 lb. -

No weight loss weeks 5-9 post op
Introversion replied to Milindia's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Revision patients may lose weight a at a slightly slower rate than those who have virgin first-time sleeves. However, bariatric surgeons don't always inform prospective patients of this potential reality to avoid discouraging them. Slower weight loss often happens to revision patients because they've already experienced the metabolic shock of a previous bariatric surgical procedure. No weight loss weeks 5-9 post op
Berry78 replied to Milindia's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Revisions are notorious for not giving the same "bang" as the original surgery. It sounds like you are doing everything right, so use the tape measure every couple weeks and don't weigh as often, and just stay the course. As you get more energy, the gym will be your friend.
