    Pre-Op With Huge Concerns

Here's an example of a typical day for me, having been banded last November. What I eat has changed a lot over the months, but currently... I have a lot of restriction in the morning, so I was having a Protein shake for Breakfast (Slim Fast Carb Control). Now, I more often drink Water for a few hours and then have a later breakfast of scrambled Eggbeaters (about 1.5 eggs worth). That fills me up. For lunch I have around 4-6 ounces, a green salad with some kind of meat thrown in. Sometimes I still look at it and wonder if it's enough to fill me up...It is, but sometimes my head just doesn't grasp it. Mid afternoon, I sometimes want a snack, and I have a bite or two of a solid meat, and that fills me up. For dinner, I have around 6 ounces of the same thing as lunch. A sugar free popsicle for a snack later. If I go out to eat, I order whatever I want and usually eat a fourth of it. I savor my going out and eating anything. The reality is that at this point it doesn't feel claustrophobic...It feels freeing. I can honestly push away from the table and say "I couldn't eat another bite!" And then mostly not think about it until the next meal. That's freedom. I have found, though that that leaves me with some free time that used to go toward grazing and filling boredom. I'm working had at filling those holes with exercise. It's a process. A day in the life.....

    Devastated :(

@@jessdawn37 Don't give up hope! I actually went in for surgery in September 2012 and when I woke up I was told they couldn't do the surgery due to my liver. I thought that was a sign that I was meant to stay this way forever. I had gotten into a car accident in the parking lot of that clinic, and it seemed that whatever could go wrong always seemed to go wrong there. Fast forward to the end of 2013 and I decided to look into other doctors. I went to a surgeon who told me I should do bypass, but I know that wasn't the right decision for me, so I looked again and found Dr. Landerholm. I went in for a consult and told him how I gave up and he told me never to give up hope. He had me do a three week pre op diet and I had surgery last Monday (9/22). I also had a hiatal hernia repaired that the first surgeon said I didn't have, so I have to look at it as a blessing in disguise. If the first doc had done the sleeve, I'd still have a huge hole in my diaphragm where my stomach was stuck. If you would like to msg me please do: mkwhite1280@gmail.com

    Sleeve vs bypass

I have leaned toward the sleeve since I decided on surgery but that's because I was only researching the sleeve and also didnt like the rerouting of organs..... I'm just afraid because my doctor explains the staple line as quite long and a lot of area for leaks and the bypass has more reaearch

    help

I have two friends who also went bypass and did well. I researched everything but the sleeve and still came up with the band. For me, I felt like all I needed was something to help with the satiety and help me to eat less food. Also, I liked the idea that it was adjustable and if it didn't work out I could have it removed or revised to bypass or sleeve. Keeping my stomach intact was important to me. You have to decide what's important for you. WLS may be what you need but only you know what the right choice can be? tmf

    New and scared :-(

I had bypass, I was in the hospital for 2 1/2 days, I had no complications what so ever, the pain was minimal and I was back to work in a week !!! I am now 9 months post op and feel fantastic... it was the best thing I ever did. BTW.. you lose more weight with the RNY than the sleeve or band, that is why I chose the RNY, if I was going to do it I wanted the best bang for my buck.
  8. Greetings everyone. I have had a long journey, I've been overweight and obese most of my life. I was 6ft1 and over 300lbs in my late teens and successfully dropped down into the 190's. Eventually I got older, got married and started working night shifts...here I am again! No health issues, but I want it to stay that way, the funny thing is, I look down and move around and still feel that I'm thin, opposite of most, pictures tell another story, haha! I joined a paid, doctor lead weight loss program in 2019 that went alright, I didn't lose much though and easily gained it back. One of the recommendations coming out of that was surgery. Where I live there is a long process for that (but it is funded). Most people only are covered for bypass though, including me. Long story short I decided to go with the Sleeve out of my own pocket. I can afford it and the bypass seemed a little too extreme to me, for my personal situation. My family had been aware of my journey and supportive until my surgery was actually booked recently after doing orientation, reading (and sharing) materials, etc. Now I have literally all my immediate family telling not to do it. My wife is upset as we have two young children and I'll be out of commission for a bit and she's extremely anxious after reading something saying 80% of people end up divorced after this, she feels she doesn't know enough too and that ones understandable. One family member told me I'm being selfish, I still don't understand that one. Another said I don't understand what I'm getting and I should get more info and see a therapist. I get that therapy brings value, but I'm always legitimately happy and in both my weight loss program and the intake for surgery the doctors said I didn't need to see a therapist (and they had them on staff). It was a little disorienting as I first stated I was looking into this a year ago and decided to go ahead with it in October to universal support. I told one colleague only and they said they didn't see why I would need that. I'm really, really, really glad I'm not on the fence about this, otherwise I might be deterred, but is it common? Have others dealt with the people around them getting the cold feet? It's funny, because I'm getting surgery, but now I find myself wondering how I can support everyone else about it April 19 is my surgery day and that's not going to change unless I'm told so by the medical practice.

    Serious Second Thoughts

I think you're very smart to wonder, and I think discussing with your surgeon is good advice. Honestly, if you graze and snack, bypass may be the smarter choice. If you just eat large meals, or can handle "emotional" or head hunger, then the band is a good choice. Diet and exercise has dismally low success rates and you are young; to get a handle on your weight now is a gift you could give yourself, your fiance, and your life to come. Its your choice. It is big and scary. Ask your surgeon by all means.
  10. Today is my first day on the forum. My surgery is scheduled for Nov 3 2020 and I am looking for my surgery squad. Who out there has similar surgery dates and wants to support each other?
  11. So, I have a date set for March 5th to have VSG. I'm now feeling I should go for the Bypass....anyone else feeling this way? My surgeon says either are fine, but I just don't know. Anyone out there have any advice? Sleeved or those with bypass. I appreciate the help. I hope to make some friends on here, not many outside my family know about my upcoming surgery. Could use a suppo a system. [emoji4]

    Will I regain the weigth?

Well yes you could regain weight; the surgery only helps you eat smaller portions it does not chose the food you eat. As someone who has had the sleeve and now the bypass I suggest you go with bypass, personally I believe it has better weight keeping off abilities than the sleeve. You shouldn't be hungry in fact I have a hard time consuming my calories as I really don't feel like it. With the sleeve I was never really hungry and I had it for 3 years. If you research how the surgeries are performed the bypass has rerouting that has a major effect on the stomach hunger hormone(I can't explain it would be better to read about it). Good luck in your decision.

    Got My Surgery Date!

I'm also in week 9 out of 16 for my weight management program. I have another nutrition class in October and a pre-op orientation class. I have a pre-op appointments with my surgeon and bariatric PCP in November. In addition to those two appointments I have more labs to get. So things are really coming along. I am still shocked that I even have a date. I have gone through the process twice already and was completely denied so I am still gonna be waiting for the actual approval to come through. Ugh my nerves are wrecked. Lol.

    Liquid diet help

I’m doing the gastric bypass...I’m pretty sure the number of weeks was based on weight but I just thought 3 weeks was extra long! I’m really hoping my body gets used to this and the headaches and dizziness goes away. Not fun!!!

    Almost there

Hi Wendy, Welcome to the site and congratulations on your upcoming surgery. I was banded in November 2007 and am nine pounds short of my goal of 150 lbs, which would mean a 136 pound loss since then. The band has been an amazing intervention for me. It is not a magic wand, but a tool which you can use in order to change your behavior around food and your relationship towards eating. I guess the most relevent advice I have for you is to follow your doctor's instructions for the post op period to the letter, and to share here often. It's great that you have a supportive husband even though he is not "one of us". If he can't understand why this is so important to you, try this: climb up on his back and scream in his ear "FOOD! FOOOOD! I WANT FOOD! FEED ME! FEED ME NOW! FOOD!". Then climb down off his back and tell him that this is what your life is like now and you don't want to go on this way. Let me know if this works. All the best, keep reading and sharing here - this site has been an essential part of my progress. -Bandpal

    Sleeve vs bypass

This a decision that is ultimately up to you. I was originally going for the bypass but when I learned about the sleeve and also learned more about the potentially unpleasant side effects of the bypass (dumping syndrome) I opted for the sleeve. It has changed my life! The bypass is considered the gold standard of weight loss surgeries because there are ling term studies showing it has good results. Any surgery is a risk and all weight loss surgeries can be defeated if one doesn't embrace the life style changes necessary for long-term success. Get as much info as you can and make your decision based on both that and you gut feeling about what is best for you. (Pardon the pun!)
  17. Hi. I have asthma where I use supplimental oxygen 24/7. Just resting, I barely need it, but when I do anything I need it. I'm seeing my surgeons PA next month, after a long absence to see if I can get my band removed and go RNY. I'm 365, 5'4". BMI in the low sixties. My question...Can you have gastric bypass when you need to use oxygen?
  18. Use got the date and approval! Yayayayaya November 14 is the day I've worked so hard for!!
  19. Hi everyone. My name is Mandy and I had my band fitted on 16th November. I am so pleased to find your forum, there is a huge amount of information here and I am avidly ploughing my way through all the topics and learning a huge amount.
  20. Hi Everyone! No matter which surgery you had, we can always be proud and happy to share our progress. In the WLS Community we have something called the Transformation Tuesday where everyone will post there starting photo and compare it with their current photos side by side. Come back every Tuesday to share your progress and to view everyone else's! __________________________________________________ Attached is my current progress photo. Not all of you know this but I have been battling complications with my WLS since 2/2008 when I was first banded. I was revised to the VSG in 9/2010 and then again just recently to the Bypass on 7/9/2014. Today I am doing amazing. I think I'm FINALLY healed from everything and the going is good. I'm happy to share that I am only a few pounds from goal and my goal size. It's slow going but I think after so much one just realizes that being better than yesterday is really all that matters. <3

  22. My friend had the bypass back when it first came out... It was really dangerous back then... but she was life or death... Anyway - fast forward 10+ years and she's put on at least 60-80% of her weight... but her health is alot better. Also, when you have the bypass, you can't ever drink again! You need to research any surgery you are thinking of having. And ask alot of questions to your doctor.
  23. I went into the office to pay my program fee and receive orders for pre-op testing. My doctor then asked me why I won't consider bypass surgery instead and people don't usually lose but 50lbs with the band. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm not considering bypass but I'm curious to know if anyone else's doctor recommended bypass instead lap band. Thanks J right
  24. I can believe it Carrie Carrie. I just think bypass is too dangerous. I was just wondering if anyone else's doctor recommended bypass to them instead of the band. I know first hand experience (mom had bypass) how bypass works and I dont want to go that route. Jbright
  25. Hi, I'm new to this forum. I was banded in April of 2008 & after 14 fills I lost 75 lbs. I got to where I was able to eat more & more & I started gaining weight back. It was like I didn't even have weight loss surgery cause I was following the same pattern I did before the band. Recently I started having stomach pains & gerd. When I finally went to my Dr. he had an endoscopy done & found I had prolasped & my esophigus was inflamed so he did a biopsy. My wife & I met with him on Monday & he said the biopsy came back OK but we needed to select one of the 4 options he had for me. 1. He could empty the band & allow the stomah to go back in place & bigin fills again, 2. Remove the band & return to original stomach, 3.replace the band, 4. remove the band & revise to a sleeve or gastric bypass. We all agreed that the gastric sleeve would be the best option. I need to get another phyc. eval. & apply for approval from my insc. again. I'm feeling good about this because after this surgery I don't have to keep going back for fills & worrying about prolapsing again. This is where I'm at right now.
