I had GERD pre-surgery. No way would I get the sleeve. GERD doesn't get worse for *everyone* who gets the sleeve, but it does for a sizable minority. There are several people on bariatric internet forums who've revised to bypass because of it. I would definitely get the bypass. I suspect this surgeon is just more familiar with the sleeve - and it's also a quicker, easier surgery, so less complicated for him. I'd be really tempted to get a second opinion. You're the one who'll have to leave with the potential GERD problem, not him.

ette16 replied to bvenegas's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Looking like May 11th for me. Revision from a lap band to the sleeve. Today is my pre op medical clearance. Tomorrow I meet with the doctor to go over all the details. Then Thursday I meet with the dietician to go over pre op and post op eating guidelines. Holy crap! I can't believe it's only 2 weeks away! -
May Sleevers...where are you?
marybear1965 replied to bvenegas's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats to all of you that have gotten your surgery date! That is so exciting! It is nice to have this support group to share the journey. We can share our fears, our experiences and thoughts as we go along the journey. Matthew282, here in Delaware, we are required to be on the 2-week liquid diet for some reason. They say that the insurance companies are now requiring it. I am having a revision from band to sleeve. I was banded in 2008 and wasn't required to do any type of pre-surgery diet, so it's all new for me too. I start tomorrow. I'm sure I'll be on here looking for support!! =) We can do this! Here's to a healthier, more active life! -
Not telling anyone. What do you say?
Babbs replied to Ssze1109's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved March 2013. Got down to 142 at 5'5" and stayed there for over 2 years. Then I would gain 5 pounds, the take it off, then gain 10 pounds and take it off, but over the past year my weight has steadily crept back up again to 167. I was drinking iced lattes, but no juices, sodas, not eating sweets. But I have lost pretty much all the appetite suppression I enjoyed for such a long time. And now I'm having issues again with reflux, joint and back pain. I haven't discussed it yet with my surgeon, so I don't know if it will be a sleeve redo or a DS. Wait, what? You're not even CLOSE to being heavy enough for a DS at 167 pounds! And you do realize that there is a certain % of normal 'bounce' weight that happens years out. @@Fredbear is right, the appetite suppression isn't permanent, and neither is the amazing restriction. This surgery isn't necessarily meant to be permanent. You did great getting your weight off and then getting the small regain off a couple of times, so you did well taking advantage of the effects of the surgery. But after those wear off, it's really all on us. I mean, your weight right now is a lot of people's goal weight. I know regain sucks, but I don't feel you need any kind of revision at all. My opinion, of course. -
Need encouragement that not everybody gains back all of the weight they lost after gastric sleeve
Bryn910 replied to hopeful333's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am a sleeve to bypass revision. When I had my sleeve I went from 260 to 220 within 6 months. I followed my program to a tee. I then developed extreme GERD. At the time I had no idea what it was but it got so bad that about 2 years ago I was burping up water and feeling gross from the GERD that I asked for a revision and got it almost a month ago. i honestly don’t know why I regained my weight back. No one knew I had the sleeve but everyone knew me as the dieter: I did Atkins, Keto, you name it. You would think I would feel full from Keto cause of the heavy protein, but nope. I felt no restriction. But I felt myself slowly losing the restriction as time went on. I had my sleeve for 7 years before revising. I have also seen where some sleevers develop GERD and the only food that seems to settle is the bad food. That didn’t happen for me but I have read it on some forums. -
Trying to decide bypass vs sleeve
IncredibleShrinkingMan replied to Nicki24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As a sleever (9 months out), I give the procedure my highest recommendation. I have lost 85% of what I want to lose, and I am confident the rest will come off. The sleeve is not just safer, but it does not force you to give up as many things forever. The main difference is carbs/sweets. While you will not want to have too much of these foods at any point in the future, the consequences of having some will not be as drastic. That said, an option for you would be to go have the sleeve, see what it does for you, and then if you are not satisfied with the progress after a year or two, you can go back and have a revision. It depends what your weaknesses are...mine weren't sweets, so the consensus was that sleeve would produce the same benefits as bypass. Your analysis may be very different. Congratulations on getting started! -
Bypass versus sleeve
PatientEleventyBillion replied to nicki125's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Initially I was 100% for RNY. But after talking to my surgeon, and two second opinions, I fully understood the reasoning why VSG was better for me. Bearing in mind many factors should be in play for you individually as to why you might need one over another. Each person's body is different. In my case, if I don't like the way the VSG went after a year I can talk to surgeon and revise to RNY. -
Aetna has updated their site: This CPB has been revised to state that sleeve gastrectomy is considered medically necessary when criteria are met.

Why don't you start attending those support groups before you have your surgery? Get yourself around like minded people that can help you stay on track, when those times comes that you wanna get off track? I would say start hitting up those groups, meetings sooner rather than later. Good luck to you on your upcoming revision, and remember that change isn't immediate. Change is an ongoing battle won, one day at a time.

Hoping you got good news about your revision. What did you find out? I’m still moving through all the prerequisites.

I just had tons of bloodwork done in anticipation of revision and found out that I am severely anemic and my D's are low. B's were through the roof. So strange. I went to a chewable vitamin and prescription Iron and D. Follow up blood work in a couple of weeks to see if treatment is working.

what offensive things have people said to you while on you weightloss journey?
babbs3772 replied to Brandy~'s topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have a nasty woman who works in my department who when she heard I was having surgery again (for my port revision mind you) said "oh are you having surgery again because it isn't working for you?" I kid you not!!! My weightloss is slow but I have lost 32 pounds since the beginning of June! I started to explain that I was a have port revision due to pain but then I thought "screw it, the woman is an idiot this much I know" and walked away from her. -
is Vertical Sleeve FDA approved?
RickM replied to Mariposa Bella's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Medicare approval of a procedure is a major milestone toward general acceptance - when Medicare started covering the DS a few years ago, that created a cascade of policy revisions on the part of the insurance companies, as they could no longer claim that a procedure covered by Medicare was "investigational" or "experimental". Currently with the VSG, more insurance companies seem to be covering it so that should be a tweak toward Medicare covering it - eventually. How long that could be is anybody's guess, given the pace of government action on such things. -

Has anyone heard of or used Dr Niazy Selim?
gen_ant_us replied to drcollier's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hey Fran, Gennifer from Higginsville, MO here! I was banded by Dr. Selim at the weight loss surgical center in Overland Park, KS. He is very nice and he does a good job. I have not had any problems so far (knock wood)! I did have to have a port revision because it had flipped over. But that is just something that happens sometimes, not really a reflection on the surgeon. He was good to me and I would recommend him to anyone. Go for it! and Good luck!!! --Genn -
Got my lapband removed
Skywalker replied to GordiSexy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I got my lapband remove 3 days ago. I will be having my revision surgery in about 2months. My doctor wants me to get the sleeve and at the beginning I was up to it, but asked some friends that had the gastric bypass and are doing great and had lost a lot of weight. Now I'm so confused. Don't really know which one to have. I haven't had either surgery, so I'm no expert, but based on my research: (1) The sleeve is not malabsorptive, whereas the bypass is. This means you'll run less risk of bone problems, Vitamin deficiencies, and probably not have to be on diligent consumption of Vitamins and supplements. (2) The sleeve seems to have a lower complication rate than the bypass and be simpler. (3) The bypass has a slightly higher average of weight loss. However, from what I've seen, the optimal candidate for the bypass is someone who is morbidly obese (by obese standards), and has let their weight spiral up to 500 or so, where they are having difficulty even ambulating and need a drastic intervention. My advice? Get the sleeve. -
@@Positive44 - I have to ask when can you remember "only" losing 12 pounds in 8 days? Come on honey you are doing fan-freaking-tastic!!!! I have learned (the hard way over and over and OVER) that if that scale stops moving its usually because I've let my Protein drop (again). How much have you been getting? @@It's Time - if you can tolerate the tomato soup well and really want to freak your taste buds out try this: In a pot mix 1 can tomato soup, refill can with beef broth & dump that in there add 1t Worcestershire Sauce, 1 t lemon juice then 13/4c Water - bring it to a simmer for a few minutes. SO GOOD!! If you have unflavored whey protein you can mix in (while its all still cold) that would be even better I seem to remember someone having an avocado craving and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. It was driving me coocoo so.... I invented an Avocado Protein shake for Breakfast this morning and it really help me with the craving! 1 scoop unflavored whey protein (or maybe vanilla?) 1c lactose free skim milk, 1/2c water, 1 whole ripe avocado and some black pepper and salt (I used a salt sub called Nu-salt) - blended the heck out of it in my Nutrabullet and didn't even have anything to strain out -- I added some ice to my travel tumbler and some extra salt & pepper and YUM! I think text time I'm adding a little mild salsa verde! I know I've only had a revision (from bypass) so your mileage may vary on these recipes but with the acid reducer my surgeon has me on I'm starting to enjoy food, even in liquid form. I have my post-op appointment tomorrow afternoon & I'm really looking forward to it.

I am a 5 day a week at the gym girl and this was a major question I had for my doc when I made the decision to have band removed and revised to sleeve. He wants me walking from day 1 and then aerobics (cardio classes, spinning) at 3 weeks and than I can resume strength training, abs included at 4-5 weeks post-op depending on how I feel. I became an exercise fanatic during this past year with my band and I swear, that is the only reason I've lost any weight! Good luck.

Very Frustrated after seeing Dr Today Need Help on Vertical Sleeve
nailsbyniki replied to Nellie3803's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was also sleeved December 13, 2012 and reached my goal weight before I was revised to the RNY on August 16th for GERD/reflux reasons. My surgery weight was 218.2 and my goal weight was 145 but I was 140 when I had my RNY surgery in August. Since then I am 133. The sleeve was great for me weight-wise, but I did have several complications so as long as you go into it knowing that there are risks no matter which route you choose, and research, research, research, and trust your surgeon completely, you will do great. Any time I can answer any other questions for you, let me know. I wish you well! Niki -
The revision would be because of the reflux. He's just afraid that it could cause erosion or ulcerations in the esophogus and make it even worse than it is now. He might be giving the meds a bit longer to see if they can help. He did tell me to put cinder blocks under the head of my bed. I asked "Instead of my wedge?" He said no, keep the wedge, too! Maybe I will call up on Monday and see if they will refer me to a gastroenterologist. I was just caught completely off-guard and didn't come up with any good questions. I'm great with numbers, not so much with words

Kickstarting weight loss after 2 years of maintenance
Amy* posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi all, I have had a lot of success with my bypass (revision from lap band). I successfully lost 30kg (66lbs) in the first 6 months post op, and I am proud to say I have maintained my loss for the last two years. I am looking to lose the last 10-15kg (22-33lbs) and I am struggling. To be perfectly honest, I feel like I've learned how to 'cheat' the bypass and what foods I can eat to not feel like I'm on a diet, but also not gain weight. I've been doing it for so long now, that any sort of restriction in calories or intake feels like a diet (which I haven't done in so long!) that I'm struggling to stay on track. Is there any advice for someone like me? I don't have a whole lot to lose compared to what I've done already so I want to go slow and steady. Thanks in advance! Amy -
Oh man, what terrible news. Sorry, been off the site for a few days and just saw your post. It does though explain the problems you've been having. I would get in to see a Gastroenterologist ASAP. I wouldn't at all be happy with the "see you in September" response that your surgeon gave you. Honestly, he should have refereed you to an GI specialist! Your surgeon may never have seen your issue, but a Gastroenterologist will have! You need to get your esophagus issue sorted first, and your surgeon is already thinking a revision!?! Now this might be the biggest tragedy of all, lol!

I'm sorry to hear this. I had my band removal and revision at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, CT. They are very big on post op care. Have you called surgeon's office? Sent from my XT1254 using the BariatricPal App -
Thank you I'm extremely motivated as I'm having a revision and hated the VGB 17years ago to an RNY.
