    Newbie (kinda!)

I used united health care and let me tell you it was really cheap! I just got banded today 01/18/13 I wish you the best of luck!! keep us updated
  2. I am considering VSG surgery. I have actually done all of the pre op tests, and all but the final nutritionist consult. I have been overweight most of my life, and have always been very active. I ran cross country in high school even though I was considerably heavier than anyone elso on the team. I can still run 5k's but not as easily as it was in the past. I have lost 50+ pounds in the past only to regain most of it. In the last 10 years my heaviest was around 280, and my lowest was around 225, and I am 6ft. I now have sleep apnea, arthritis in both knees, and other joints, high cholesterol, a borderline high AIC and I am only 29. I mentioned that I was considering a WLS seminar to my wife and she said she was interested. We both attended a seminar and went to follow up consult appointments. The doctor suggested gastric bypass for her (her BMI is in the upper 40's) and a band or sleeve for my, but strongly suggested the sleeve over the band. Now that my wife has lost some weight by diet and exercise, she is not sure she wants the surgery. I have also lost weight with diet and exercise in the past and I always seem to regain all or most of it. Now with all the issues I am having it is harder and more painful to exercise much. The nutritionist keeps asking if this is the path I want to take, and she thinks I can loose the weight without surgery. She said that I should let my wife have the surgery and with changed eating habits in the house I would loose my weight. She said they had a woman with a BMI of 35 had gastric bypass at their practice and now she has trouble staying above a BMI of 20. I want my wifes decision to be her's and I try not to push her in any direction. I am not sure if I should go ahead and have the surgery even if she does not, or try the diet and exercise route again and see if I can keep it off this time even though I have not really been a healthy weight in 10+ years.
  3. BrandyII, I am so sorry that you are having a tough time. Some docs are like that, I am sure that half of it is for your safety and the other half is for the safety of their bank accounts, but it is what we must do to get where we are going. Try to think of all the unpleasantnesses that you are avoiding by losing the weight, and remember, this too shall pass (now would be good). Keep you eye on the prize, the band will change your life in so many wonderful ways. I can roll around on the ground and run around the playground with my 19 month old grandson now. I couldn't do that 16 months ago when I weighed nearly 300 pounds! And I can look forward to watching him grow up and being a part of that rather than waiting to die from some obesity related disease. I already had a stroke at age 40, just before my grandson was born. I know that this is frustrating and tiresome, but trust me, it IS worth it! Good luck to you! Laura

    Post-Workout Recovery

@@dlappjr, Nutritionally, you can speed muscle recovery and glycogen (fuel) replenishment if you take in some nutrients within 15 to 60 minutes after finishing your workout. The goal is 4 grams of carbs for every gram of Protein. If it’s just a snack, you can aim for about 10 grams of protein plus 40 grams of carbs. For a meal, you can go for about 80 grams of carbs and 20 grams of protein. You could have Peanut Butter and whole grain toast, or whole grain cereal/oatmeal with milk, or a shake with Protein powder and fruit, or a sweet potato and Greek yogurt… As for the actual workouts: if you’re super sore, it could mean you worked super hard. Soreness peaks at 48 hours (2 days) post workout, so if you’re aiming to work the same muscles two days later, you’re probably still going to be sore. What you could do is switch up the muscle groups and workouts, so you’re not hitting the same muscles as hard until they’ve recovered more. You could also do cardio on your off days to get the blood flowing (and burn calories). Another thought is that you could be overtraining. If you’re really that sore, maybe your body just isn’t used to those kinds of workouts yet. That would mean either be patient until your body gets used to them (like take the extra day of recovery if you need it), or scale back on the workouts until your body is ready to hit it that hard without needing so much recovery. Anyway, good for you for working so hard! You will see great results if you keep it up!

    Post-Workout Recovery

I looked through the Fitness and Exercise posts for something specific but didn't find any info. I am wondering about Post-Workout Recovery. Specifically, how to maximize the recovery, efficiently. If I do something that makes many muscles sore for 2-3 days, I am looking for a way to shorten that time down to 2 days or less. In this specific case, I am not lifting weights, so I can't lesson the lift, or the reps. It was a group workout doing things like bosu ball pushups and bosu ball plank jacks, mountain climbers, assisted pull-ups, russian twists with 10# med balls, one legged squats and a bunch of boxing bag punching. I waited the usually day before working out again, but my fri morning workout suffered because I wasn't 100% from wednesdays workout. Any ideas? I am looking into adding amino acids. I already get about 110g Protein throughout the day.
  6. This is a great idea! There was a group of us on this forum who all had surgery around the same time (in 2019), and it was really useful to share our successes and setbacks with each other. Good luck!
  7. I feel sorry for you as I know what you are dealing with. Having three surgeries back to back is so hard, I can only imagine. I had to do a endoscopy and had a 2 days rest and then went in for surgery. I think you can get PTSD from all of this, and it hurts to know that this is a elective surgery. We all went into this with high hopes and dreams of changing our life for the better and instead we dealt with more trauma. I had a spinal surgery in 2019 and I developed a drop foot, which was a complication from the surgery, which I still deal with. I have struggled with depression prior to this and it just hurts. I have went back to the ER and I get good support there but where I live it is overrun with covid patients, so it isn't the best place to go. My surgeon is very kind and I have his number. He comes to see me in the hospital every morning. I am doing a bit better but I still stay in bed most of the days. Your advice is great and I agree that I need to get back to a routine. I am less emotional now, I also think the meds they us on make us more emotional. I wish you a speedy recovery!
  8. Thanks to all who have expressed such loving concern for my Mom and me. Wanted to post an update here. My Mom has been responding well to the Chemo so far. She has had 4 treatments and after the 6th they will do a scan to see if it is having the desired affect. I am very relieved and thankful that her suffering has been alleviated and she has been able to return to some of her previous activities although not everything. I have been taking a lot of yoga classes which feels like a life saver to me at this time. I need to get some aerobic exercise too and I like to walk or bike outdoors but the weather has been too cold for me these past two weeks. Guess I'm gettin old! LOL! I belong to a Planet Fitness but I don't like it there. It's a tallness issue. I like to use the elliptical machine but the ones they have aren't comfortable for me. I like to hold onto the part of the handlebar that monitors your heart rate occasionally as I have a target heart rate I'm going for. I have to lean forward on their machines to grasp the handle bars and it bothers my back. Seems like a small issue for such a cheap gym membership ($10 a month) but the reality is, if I don't like it I won't use it. I have managed to drop a couple of lbs but it's going very slow. That's OK as long as it goes! Hope everyone is doing OK. Hugs to all!
  9. Could be right after Christmas but my personal bet, either January 4th or January 7th 2019. But I would be HAPPY to be proved Wrong!👈👸👉
  10. Blue Diamond Artisan Nut Thins are really tasty and only about 10 calories / 1.5 carbs per cracker. They are also wheat/gluten free if that matters to you. I just finished 6 of them with some edamame hummus and it was a really good snack/lunch during the end of the Cowboys game. The Kays and Quest chips are good but pretty pricey IMHO.

    Fills

I think it is very realistic to only want to be as filled as necessary to lose weight. For that reason, even though it frustrated the heck out of me, I appreciated the slowness with which my doctor gave fills. I have lost weight pretty slowly (but steadily) but was able to get used to each level of restriction as it came rather than suddenly reaching it and having to adjust. On the other hand, I am a HUGE proponent of getting the fills and restriction you need. I needed 5 fills before I got any noticeable restriction at all. (7.5 ccs in a 10 cc band) It made all the difference in the world. I would not have lost the 31.5 pounds I have lost had I not reached the proper level of restriction. I could not lose weight at all without the band and I needed to have quite a bit of restriction before I saw the scale move at all. Even at my sweet spot I am not breaking any weight loss records but I am happy because the band has finally allowed me to lose something!!! So what I am saying is: you need to determine what the right level of restriction is for you. I can eat about 2/3 of a fast food hamburger, but I can't eat the fries etc. that go with it. (And it's a hamburger, not a double cheeseburger!) If I could stay at a level of restriction that allowed me to eat a whole hamburger and fries, AND still lose weight, you better believe I would do that!!! But for me, nope. I need restriction. Just listen to your body and watch the scale. You will know what to do.

    Hi! New here!

I had a very similar situation, but had my band drained for both pregnancies (banded since 2003). I had band slippage and 2 hiatal hernias (first diagnosed Nov 2015/repaired Dec 2015, and second April 2016/repaired May 17 w/band removal & sleeve conversion). I'm currently at day 11 with my sleeve. Loving it! The first few days were a bit rough -- painful to drink, then the constant feeling of hunger. Yesterday (day 10), I was able to have yogurt and my first full feeling! Do know there is hope, and you are not alone! I read in one of the forums here that patients with band conversions have a more difficult time. My NP confirmed this yesterday at my first post-op appointment. So do keep this in mind if you're tempted to stray from better food choices.

    Here To Help

Thanks! My meal plan is to limit carbs to breakfast or lunch but other than that I eat everything. The only real rule I follow is to stop eating the minute I start to feel full. I walk/run for 1 hour three times a week. I wasn't really exercising early on. I am going to get about 10 pounds of excess skin removed from my lower abdomen later this month thats been hindering my running. I am hoping to increase my workouts once I'm all healed.
  14. Call your surgeon and ask him to call in a script for dissolvable Zofran tablets. That was a lifesaver for me. I'm 10 days out today & feeling much better!
  15. Yay! Glad your feeling good. It's nice to get back to life! I'm 10 weeks and doing Good!

    regrets about lapband choice?

Lucky you! However, while one does hear of the occasional more "in depth" psych consult as you've described, by and large most of them are the rubber stamp sessions that Headhunter alludes to. While I did answer 500 MMPI type questions, my personal psych meeting was all of 10 minutes. It was ok for me...I'd done just under a year of behavioral therapy on my own and was ready. But sadly, psychiatry/psychology isn't a hard science (although it's trying!) and the psych consult for WLS seems to vary as widely as the pre and post op diets the docs give us.
  17. My doctor also required 10% body weight loss. Yes shrinking the liver is important; but there are other reasons. My nurse said think of it as the doctor needing to get at something at the bottom of a fully packed suitcase. The more you take out of the suitcase (fat); the easier he can get to the stomach which is at the back of your anatomy. I highly recommend watching real surgeries on YouTube. There is no blood so they are'nt gross. They really give you an idea of what the doctor is doing to your body and how the band is attached. I think if people watched a surgery they would'nt be tempted to "cheat" on their post op diet. The stomach has gone through trauma and needs time to heal. I thought of the pre surgery diet as practicing for the rest of my life. Getting the band is'nt the end it's the beginning. Eating healthy foods and healthy sized portions now will get you in the habit of doing it later on.
  18. Tried a new recipe tonight and wasn't sure how it would turn out. When I did the calculations I figured there were some elements that were too high (sodium, for sure). But because the rest of the day was a relatively low content one, this finish didn't even come close to taking me over my other daily limits. So, I gave it a shot. Bite 1...hmm, this is definitely not pizza and I'm not sure I like it. Bite 3...wow, these flavors are really good together. Last bite...really? I'm already done? Yes, I liked it! 1 Mission multigrain tortilla 1 T Pace Picante Sauce 1/8 cup mixed peppers (frozen) 17 slices Hormel Turkey Pepperoni 1/4 cup Kraft low-moisture part-skim mozzarella Bake at 400 for 10 minutes, really just long enough to warm things up and melt the cheese. 19. The best: Getting my life back!!! I feel 20 years younger and am doing things now that I haven't been able to do for decades. Rode 15 miles on my bike today and felt great! Hiking hills, riding my mule, climbing stairs, swimming (in a size 10 suit!!!), getting down and up off the floor, no more sleep apnea, no problems with asthma or reflux, no fungal infections in my skin folds this summer, no joint pain, normal BP and blood sugars (ie: no more metabolic syndrome!), wearing cute clothes, feeling "normal" in a crowd, more confidence, not having to size up the furniture in a room to decide which I will fit into, the list just goes on and on. I took a "Biological Age" test, and I am 16 years younger than my stated age! Hurray!!! The worst: Can't think of any. This is one of the best decisions I have ever made for myself. I LOVE my new active lifestyle and lifelong way of eating. Yes, there can be temptations, but they get easier and easier to deal with as you see the benefits of healthy choices. Sugar and desserts have no appeal at all any more. Neither do processed foods, coffee, soda, or alcohol. I do not even see those as sacrifices - not when I get to eat so many other healthy things. I guess one thing might be that when I go out to eat, I can only finish about 1/4 of the meal. I take the rest home, but the left overs are really not that great past a day, so I end up giving the rest to the chickens. So that's a waste of money. I am learning to order off the appetizer menu and to not let my eyes get bigger than my stomach. It's a process. Another thing might be that I feel a bit self conscious about my face, which I think looks old and wrinkly now. Others tell me differently and that I look younger, but I just don't see it that way. I am trying to be more out going and cheerful so that the wrinkles look more like smile lines than grumpy lines. That's just a matter of building confidence and learning to accept a great new body, but one that looks a little funny in places.
  20. I'm 62, had the sleeve on 10/24/17 and no issues recovering. The dry mouth is awful right after surgery and sipping is hard at first due to swelling but it improves quickly after that. Use biotene mouth swabs. For nausea ask the anesthesiologist to give you a scopolamine patch before surgery - works like a charm. For pain ask for acetaminophen 1000mg in the IV - I would have called anyone a liar if they told me tylenol would work that well but it really did. You will be tired for about 4 weeks and the biggest hurdle is getting enough fluids - stay on top of that from the beginning. Sometimes you can be confused about the difference between acid reflux, hunger pangs and an empty stomach - acid reflux can feel like hunger. Good luck - and see you on the other side.
  21. Hey everyone!! I recently finished my options class through Kaiser. I’m scheduled to see Dr. Kim in West LA in a few weeks for my surgical consultation and I was just wondering if he was a stickler for weight loss prior to surgery. I’ m only 4lbs away from my 10% weight loss goal but I’m struggling. I’m just curious to know if I may be turned away from surgery and asked to come back in a few months for 4 lbs. Please help. Thank you

    Anyone else hate Gatorade?

I just bought a variety of protein water on Amazon. Delivered in less than 48 hours. Now let's cross our fingers and hope they taste good. Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. Thank you to all of you! I currently see a psychologist twice a month and he assures me that my symptoms will improve greatly once I start to lose weight. I am hoping he is right because I feel like a monster now and would love to go outside and not be starred at or laughed at. I'm already on a liquid diet (Protein shakes) and after 10 days I'm just now starting to tolerate it without being super negative and depressed. I have hope for the future for the first time in my life and that scares me a little because it would be devastating to have something go wrong and lose that feeling. I have lost 18 lbs since I started this journey and that is motivating me but I still cry when I see a Carl's Jr. commercial. Here's to leaving it up to fate and not freaking out too much!

  25. I was also only one night. My night in the hosptial was bad as my room was right outside of the nurses desk and they forgot to turn up the heat when I got to my room, so I was cold all night. But I walked almost every hour. I don't think there was another sleeve patieint so I had the hallways to myself. I was released by 10 am the next morning, My DH and I went directly to walmart to fill my prescriptions. I went home and took a nap then we went to a park and did a small walk. Since I had no complications-no gas/nausea-One day was fine for me. I also had a hiatal hernia repair.
