    Feeling Regretful!

Hi I actually cried about my old stomach... The headache is from not eating and then maybe not enough fluids.I had it too for about 10 days on and off.At the moment you are delicate and it is a big op so you will feel tired and sick,I certainly did. You will start feeling better soon.Just rest, sip and breathe. And dont worry about anything else.It takes a while to start feeling that everything will be ok,but it will.I sometimes read of people driving the next day and going to work in a week and I have no idea how they do that. Just try to relax and its baby steps at this point. Good luck and speedy recovery for you!

  4. I' m with ShareeB, I am sooo tired of the Protein shakes. I have never been one to drink my food nor liked smoothies or reg. shakes, so these Protein Shakes from the get go have been hard. Right now I can down protein in (on my 10th day-surgery scheduled for Aug. 10) a few gulps. My fear is after the surgery, getting all my protein in when I have to sip the protein shakes over time. does anyone have suggestions or helpful tips for post surgery?

    Long Island Sleevers

Hi I'm on Long Island and having surgery on Jan 19
  6. I am 5 weeks post op and starting to feel really good about myself again. I 24. As a young woman, I always had curves but they were all in the right places but about 10 yrs ago, it became harder and harder to loose weight and the old tricks(including diet pills) became less effective. About 4 yrs ago I was diagnosed with a begin pituitary tumor which caused my body to produce excess amounts of prolactin(hyperolactinemia). Essentially your body thinks your pregnant. Even though the condition became controlled with medicine. Losing weight remained an issue and I slowly creeped up from 185 to 214over 4 years and just couldnt get out of the 200s. Fast forward to today, I'm down 18 pounds post op and starting to notice results. I attended an anniversary party yesterday and was able to wear a medium. I bought the same dress earlier this summer but needed an extra large. And at the dinner and in general I'm able to skip past the rice, pasta and potatoes and make those healthy choices of baked chicken or fish and veggies and salads etc. And its not hard; it has become a way of life for me that I have been able to embrace. So excited about what my new weight lose journey will bring! I know it will take time but I really feel like I can do it[emoji5] Sleeved 8/10/17 HT: 5'2 HW: 214 SW: 212 CW: 194 Goal: 155

    JULY 5, 2016 SLEEVERS

Are you looking forward to the liquid diet as much as I am? And my dumb butt has just been eating whatever strikes my dance since I know life as I know it is about to change, I bet I've gained 10 lbs in the last month. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using the BariatricPal App
  8. I'm on Day 3/10 of my pre-op liquid diet. And for the most part I'm following orders. Drinking my protein shakes & stuff. But in the afternoon, it's rough. So Day 1 I had a hand full of mini pretzel crackers. Day 2 I had a chicken strip and a teaspoon of cooked vegetables (I was preparing my kids dinner) I tried my hardest to not try it. I took one bite then turned into a craving monster. One bite turned into me eating the whole chicken strip (it was small, but STILL) and today.. Day 3.. I was doing good then I just had to have a hand full of potato chips. Damn it!!! Am I ruined now? Has anyone else had this issue? How did you overcome it? I plan to get on track tomorrow but honestly I can't stop the small slip ups. I know the day before surgery I will absolutely starve if I need to. But all these days prior.. are really tough. I didn't go crazy though, just a small slip up.. I'm still getting my liquids in.
  9. I was normal size when I married an overweight man. But to be fair I was an obese child and in the 8th grade I started to loose weight by a lot of dieting and exercise. His mother was an amazing fattening food cook. I never knew food could taste this good. I also tried very hard by cooking all this fattening food my new husband liked. I got pregnant 3 months in and I gained 60 lbs. never to see under 200 again. I weighed on average 250 lbs for the next 40 years. When I was put on insulin I gained another 25. 10 weeks ago I had sleeve surgery and so far have lost 49 lbs. My dear husband still has not slowed down on eating even though he is 100 lb overweight. My surgeon said a lot of spouses start losing when they see their partner start to slim down. His response when I was scheduling this surgery was well what about my food, what about me.
  10. Head hunger as in "appetite and could eat something"? Well... my first WLS was March 6th 2001 so since 19 years, 8 months and 15 days. 😂 Head hunger is normal, everyone has it (yes, even the "skinnies"). Accept it and get used to it.

Okay, I am assuming there are no other "passangers" that are washed up on the shore lines dead, so we can't eat them right? I guess, for all practical purposes I would have to say 1) box of Protein bars ~ they wont spoil 2) propel, cause I can't live without that at home either 3) honey roasted peanuts 4) fat free chocolate pudding 5) cans of chicken meat ~ that wont spoil ~ it doesn't need to be fed ~ and i dont have to kill it 6) cans of tuna ~ i hate it, but if i were starving i would eat it.... 7) dill pickles 8) tostitos 9) salsa 10) Pepridge Farms Milano Cookies....

You're stranded on an island and can only have 10 foods. There's no means of fishing over the cliffs. You can't have tacos or pizza or prepared foods because I said so since it's my game. What are your 10 foods? 1 ~ Bacon 2 ~ Potatos 3 ~ cheese 4 ~ Bread 5 ~ BBQ Babybacks 6 ~ Rotisserie chicken 7 ~ Brocolli 8 ~ Mangos 9 ~ Ice cream 10 ~ Butter (yep, I love the stuff so much I'd sacrifice a food)

  20. One thing that leaps to mind (because I actually have a husband for whom this is currently a very real problem) is your hydration status. I am going to give advice that sounds counterintuitive. If you are drinking 10 glasses of Water in addition to other fluids and Protein drinks, you might want to pare back a little. (Post-op, you'll likely have to pay attention to getting ENOUGH liquid, so this is not a long-term suggestion; just something you might want to consider as you endure the preop agony.) Everyone always says to drink, drink, drink. But once you're well-hydrated, there's no such thing as "better hydrated." Our kidneys do an exquisite job of ridding our bodies of excess fluid---but when they are flooded with too much Fluid, their ability to finely regulate electrolytes is compromised. This can wreak havoc with electrolytes (sodium in particular) and cause weakness, headache, and other (sometimes very serious) problems. The easiest way to gauge hydration is urine color. If it's very dark, you need more fluid. If it's pale yellow, you're a-okay. If it's clear, you can ease off on fluid a bit.

    Band vs Sleeve

This is an abstract and only reflects a small sample set. It does not go into the causation of the failures such as non compliance with food, follow up appt., taking medications that can cause issues. Without having the full study and understanding the study criteria, rigorous of the analysis, etc this abstract is not scientifically interesting. I read a lot of success stories from people who have the band and are successful. I choose to focus on encouraging everyone to reach their goals. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16 I believe in encouraging people as well but I also believe I gotta be straight up with people who are trying to make a decision like the original post in this. I used to push the lap band back in the day, and I've seen a lot of people (my family members) suffer. Guilt makes you think to do research a bit more. If they already got the band, then I try to encourage people of course.
  22. We all know that getting plenty of sleep is important to normal functioning and health. And sleep deprivation has been associated with an increased risk of obesity in both animals and humans — it results in hyperphagia (increased appetite) and weight gain. Dr. Hee-Jin IM of the Korea University Anam Hospital in Seoul, Republic of Korea and colleagues focused on the amount of weekend sleep extension (catch-up sleep) that approximately 2200 adults reported getting on a regular basis. The BMIs of the weekend catch up sleepers were significantly lower than that of the folks who did not catch up on weekends — 22.8 vs 23.1 respectively, after controlling for age, gender, average sleep duration, and other demographic factors. http://www.acsh.org/news/2017/06/19/catch-sleep-keeps-one-trim-11445
  23. You have no idea how thankful you are going to be next year when you have these pictures to gloat over. Today, my MIL and I looked through 7 years of pictures to find "before" pics of me, we found 10 so I am in about 1 1/2 pictures a year with my family. I know its painful now but next year you will be one happy camper when you are able to see the difference a year makes. Don't let this take you off course. :smile2:
  24. Good luck! My BMI was 41 with few co morbidities so you should be good. I'm 10 months out

    Mixed feelings

I have wrote on this topic before, but it doesn't seem to go away. It is my very mixed feelings about a good friend who also had gastric sleeve surgery. Let me start with a little back story...I met my friend our senior year in high school. We clicked right away and soon were thick as thieves. He is a gay male that went through the very painful "coming out" after high school, in our late teens / early twenties. I supported him 100% in everything. When his mother was unable to accept who he was,( he was raised by a single mom as an only child) I stood by his side. As he went through the first years after coming out, learning how to navigate the gay world, I was there too. We were the best of friends. We took vacations together. We worked at the same hotel together for a couple of years. And he was there for me too, as my friend. As our lives took twists and turns our friendship remained. Over the years we had falling outs, but always made up. One year we had a gift of the Magi moment at Christmas when we gave each other the exact same gift! ( A framed picture of the two of us- we both had the exact same picture made into a 5x7 and framed ) About 13 years ago ( early 2000s) my friend was diagnosed with Hodgekins Lymphoma. By this time he had a partner for several years as well as his mother did come around to accept them. I was there for him any time he needed me, but I was more in the background by this point. I am happy to say he beat his cancer and has been free and clear for 10+ years. The point is, we have been close friends for over 20 years. Also during this time we have been diet buddies. There are countless sets of "before" pictures of the two of us as we were determined to work together to lose weight. We joined a gym together when my marriage ended and I needed to get back my life. We tried to influence each other in good ways, but we also sabotaged each other at times too. Over the last few years both of us gained a LOT of weight. Granted during this time our lives have taken us in different directions, but we have kept in touch. I have been over for birthdays and holidays. He has come to see me during my various stays in the hospital for blood clots. We have stayed friends...Until recently. Now I feel our friendship has been slipping away and it has me feeling all kinds of emotions. I had my surgery on October 21, 2013. I made the decision to do it the previous July and started on the path in earnest in August. When I told my friend of my decision he surprised me by saying he was thinking about it too. He had once before set out to have the Roux-n-Y done, but "chickened out" after the informational seminar. He said he had been thinking about surgery again and had happened upon gastric sleeve. We talked at length about the surgery and I told him I had made my decision, and would support him whatever he chose to do. Several weeks later I hear from him to say he too has made the choice to have the sleeve, but his mother is not happy about it and his partner is against it. I go back into supportive friend mode, the same friend who was there for his coming out. We talk and share ideas and plans and information over the next couple of months. As my surgery grows closer and I am going through the pre op steps I share it all with him, to let him know what to expect. I have my surgery and he comes to visit me, once bringing his mother along. This helps her to accept his decision and from that point out she begins supporting him. (although his partner was against the idea up until he had his surgery) Shortly after my surgery I notice the first shift in things with my friend. He isn't as chatty. He doesn't seem to want to hear about what I am going through during my recovery and first weeks after surgery. I know he is now in his final weeks prepping for his own surgery and maybe that has a lot to do with it. All I know is I need MY friend and he was pulling away. He did no kind of dieting before his surgeon ordered pre op diet. While it was entirely his choice, I was trying to suggest maybe he change some of his eating habits on his own to help him be successful. Maybe my advice hit him the wrong way, I don't know. He had his surgery on 12/17/2013. He used a different surgeon and hospital so his experience was quite a bit different than mine had been. While I was wanting to talk and compare and support one another, he was just not interested. The last time I have physically been in his company was shortly before Christmas, about 5 days after his surgery. He stopped by my house to drop of CANDY!!! ( at this point he still wasn't "with the program") He has decided to blog his experience. This has been how I have kept up with him, through blogs. He no longer calls me. I have to call him several times to finally hear from him. He has done amazing in his weight loss. Being the over achiever he is once he sets his mind on a goal he was in the gym exercising by 3wks post surgery. He goes to the gym 5-6 days a week. (gets up at 3:30am and goes before work) He has a personal trainer he works with. And all of this makes me jealous- I admit it. I am a single mom. I can't get up and go to a gym at 3:30am. I can't go during lunch for various reasons. I could go after work, but feel guilty taking my daughter from a sitter where she has spent the past 9 hours only to drop her in a daycare at the Y. ( only place I could find that has child care service available for it's clients) I know they are excuses, but they are valid. I do not have the finances my friend has to hire a trainer either. This is where our different lifestyles play a huge role. His ability to focus more on himself has helped him achieve greater results than I have been able to. Ok, there is the whole genetic thing that he is a guy and men lose faster than women blah blah blah. I get it, on an intellectual basis. But to see his blog saying how he has lost 96lbs since his pre op diet started 12/7 and how great he has done. He has never stalled. ( I did at about 3wks out) He has only started to have to deal with thinning hair.( mine has almost all fallen out and I wear a wig) The jealousy is a stupid feeling, but I think it is because he has turned away from me. Had we been there as friends to support each other, I think I would just be happy for him. But I have learned about his life through Youtube! He changed jobs, I found out on a blog. He got a new cat, I found out on a blog. He gives shout outs to those who have supported him ( his mom, his partner) yet I was the one who has always supported him and he has forgotten me. It hurts me deeply. I have wrote this before and it was suggested I tell him. I just haven't had the courage. I know I need to, but I am afraid. I am afraid that the reality that our friendship may be gone will come true. It does happen, I get that. I even posted about it on another forum yesterday. I just feel this is different. We have gone through so much and have been friends for so long. I truly thought both of us having this surgery would just be another way our friendship could evolve. But it has not. I am so proud of him and happy he has had such success. At the same time I miss the friend he was....
