Extremely out of shape - Could use some help.
MichiganChic replied to Huntingnurse's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I was very out of shape, but I could walk, so that's what I did. Started with about 30 minutes a day, worked my way up. It used to take an hour to walk about 2.5 miles, now I'm up to nearly 4 miles in an hour. I didn't even realize I was going faster, but little by little, my endurance and strength improved. I still feel pretty out of shape, but no where near as bad as I was 8 weeks ago. I've also added some strength training to my routine. I think the key is doing the most you can without over doing it, and keep at it daily. Good luck -
Ok so I'm down 36lbs and six weeks out so I figure now's as good of a time as any to start exercising/weight lifting. I'm horribly out of shape though (as I'm sure a lot of us here are). I'm looking for tips from those of you who hadn't been an overweight but in great shape person prior to surgery (if that makes sense - you know a big guy that's even bigger b/c he lift a ton of weights and works out). Someone recommended insanity, but I think I'll fall out from a heart attack lol the name alone scares me. I'm going to the gym tonight for the first time in a while to start on cardio and some weights... for motivation I've already signed up and paid for a "Run for your Lives" Zombie 5k that's coming here in June (You should seriously check it out - the youtube videos are insane). I've never run except to chase an ice cream truck as a kid so this should be interesting. I have the C25K app but I can't even handle the day one routine of jog 90 sec, walk 60, for 30 mins... So.. tips... How should I start this process? I DO have a bad knee... but everything else is fine. I need to build up endurance for the run and strength/muscle too for some of the obstacles (and to tighten up/prevent loose skin in the process). Would love to hear what you guys/girls did!

What part of the knee is hurt? Is it dull or sharp pain? There are so many different finely tuned parts in the knee, if you can point out where it's hurting exactly, I can make some recommendations for joint supplements and some leg workouts that will help. To start with, I take TwinLabs Joint Fuel. I have arthritis (diagnosed) and bad patella tracking (self diagnosed with Dr. friends opinion afterwards) and the Joint Fuel has been awesome on my knees. Deadlifting anything over 500lbs used to kill my left knee, with Joint Fuel, I don't have any pain at all other than soreness from a workout. I'm fairly certain however, I'll be looking at at least one knee replacement in the next 15-20 years, if not sooner. To get started, the c25k app is awesome for cardio. I haven't used it all the way through yet, but I will very soon after I'm able to after surgery. For lifting, which will help build your cardio endurance and strengthen the muscles, Starting Strength is always my recommendation, but it's a lot of reading. I would stay away from any isolation work. Many will tell you, and you will see countless newbies in the gym doing isolation curls, biceps curls, calf work, etc, just wasting time as a beginner. You got to have a very solid foundation before you go in to isolation work, i.e. about 3 years lifting, and is usually only used for sculpting and not building. If you don't want to do starting strength, do these: Bench Press, Overhead Press, Squat, Bent Over Rows, T Bar Rows, Pullups/Pulldowns, Deadlifts. For squats, you can swap them out with leg presses or hack squats really easily. I would also start with barbells instead of dumbbells, just because it's easier to balance a bar versus two dumbbells, and start light. For upper body stuff, stay in rep ranges 6-12 reps, 2-3 sets. For lower body, higher reps, I'd stay 15-25 reps again 2-3 sets. Just getting started shouldn't leave with these long ass drawn out work outs, they should be fairly short, rest 60-90 seconds between each set. You could do a 2 days split, or 3 day split. M-W-F. Start with upper-lower-upper, next week M-W-F being lower-upper-lower. Let me know if you have any other questions man, always glad to help out. -

I was horribly out of shape prior to surgery and I literally started by walking up and down the hallway inside my apartment, then around the closest end of the building, then the further end of the building. About 3 weeks out I walked around the 1/4 mile perimeter of the lake at my apartment complex and I felt like Rocky!!! I did light weights, 2 pounds, for arm lifts, biceps curls, etc. I did 10 reps at a time, then built up the number of reps until I could do 100 reps without feeling anything, then I changed the weights for 5 pound weights. -
10 months out and stuck in a rut

So sorry to hear you are struggling. I am very new to this journey (was just sleeved a week ago tomorrow), but thought I would throw in my 2 cents anyway...... It might be time to ask yourself "What am I committed to?". Are you committed to a lifestyle of exercise and healthy eating? Are you committed to taking the best care of yourself as you can? More specifically- what will you commit to doing each day? Will you commit to 30 mins of exercise X number of times per week? Will you commit to writing down what you eat each day? Do you see where I am going here?--- we each are already making commitments by our actions every day, showing what we are and are not committed to---- the idea is to make the commitment intentional. If I declare I am committed to health, but then let myself eat food I know is not good for me, I am not being honest with myself. It is ok if you are not ready to commit to being healthy-- just be honest, so you know where you stand and so you can take responsibility for your choices instead of feeling "lost" and "out of control". Best of luck to you on your journey! -

3 weeks after tummy tuck. Lots of swelling and one drain in still, but I couldn't be happier! -
:eek:I am very frustrated that the darn hospital has yet to call me to schedule my sleep apnea test. I'm going to call them tomorrow to make sure they got the referal. I just like to keep things moving forward. It is a long enough process as it is. On a good note I see the dietician this Friday and then get all my bloodwork done on Monday. After that there is still the EKG/chest exray to schedule. Then I think I will have all the things that are required preop done. I still haven't changed my diet but am up to riding 2 1/4 miles a day on my excersize bike. And was down to 275 (down 2 lbs.)when I went to the Doc last week. Until next time..................

This is just what I need... I am in. I have not lost any since early October and I am having a hard time admitting that I am the one making poor choices. I am the only one that is saboutaging my own efforts. Now I am blaming it on the holidays and my body just catching up with the weight that I have already lost. I have signed up for a new fitness club that is suppose to open the end of the week. When I signed up (2 weeks ago) I quit getting on the tread mill at home. It is like I have given myself the past few months off....WHY? I am not near the personal goal that I set for myself and I started out so well. How do we start over? Please help! -Carol

Well, I'm 3 months out and have said good bye to 34.7 pounds forever.. I've had 2 fills and really feel restricted in the morning, but by 4:00-ish I feel I can't eat alot more than I should. Going to weigh-in apt on Friday and will see about another fill. I know my weight loss has been good ...BBBBUUUUTTTT I am dissappointed in my weight loss. I've only loss about 3 lbs in the last month:confused:. In addition to my band, I'm also on high protein/low carb eating (won't say diet b/c its a lifestyle change)...so I expect to lose more than the 1-2 lb week guidline. In all fairness, I should also report I had sinus surgery on 7/2. Not sure if that has something to do with it or not (hoping so). Thanks for all of the support thru this whole process. Getting my band was one of the best things I did!! Kristina

Anyone want to share some recipes for Phase Two, three of the diet?
Iambeautiful posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am on the soft pureed foods at the moment. I've tried to make it interesting but would like some ideas to make cottage cheese, yoghurt and stuff like that more interesting. I take plain greek yoghurt and add a little of the sugar free lime Jello in it for flavoring and stir it up or whip it up until blended..... it reminds me of key lime pie. Sometimes I add one packet of stevia too it as well because the greek yoghurt seems a little bitter and that takes away from the bitterness. You can add any flavor of sugar free jello to it..... put only use a little and not the whole packet. I used the egg beaters... southwestern style. I poured 1/4 cup into a muffin pan and baked it at 350 degrees in a toaster oven ... convection oven combo until done..... I then scooped it out and put it on my plate. It is like a keish I serve it with one tiny wedge of the laughing cow cheese. you have to be careful and eat it very slow as the first time I tried it seemed to get stuck in my esphagous.... Now over two weeks post op i can tolerate it well.... The thing about eating Protein foods like eggs is that it keeps you stomach feeling full for longer...... than say the mashed potatoes. I have scrambled eggs or mini keish at least once a day. any more suggestions..... I drink the broth from any of the Healthy choice Soups if i want something hot but do not blend them as that counts for a meal and it doesn't keep you feeling full. I don't like plain chicken broth but will strain the solid items from the Soup and just drink the broth from a soup mug.... it's very satisfying. still having the sugar free popsicles too...... not all the time. But they help a lot to satisfy the need for something sweet.....and refreshing. -
So many of us are dealing with the stall. We have to hang on, we'll get through it. It's frustrating , though. And I just did something I should NOT have done. OMG. Help. Where's the thing to start a new topic?

Question for the ladies...TMI
HeartOnMyVerticalSleeve replied to brandi77's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've had mine for 2 weeks already and I'm impatiently waiting for it to go away. Usually, mine last from 4-5 days but this is ridiculous. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I think it's my body going into shock but 2 weeks is a tad bit dramatic. -
I am almost 8 weeks out. My birth control pills allow 1 period every 3 months. I've already had 2 since surgery, so yeah, it definitely messes with your system.

Maybe Broke My Stall?
MKambalimath replied to MKambalimath's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Unfortunately, lol, I was the one bringing them in the house. Its weird, because cookies arent really my thing, but I always bought them for my son for a treat, and one pkg would last a really long time. I have been concentrating on proteins, all I've eaten is chicken and cheese and then started adding some salad lately. But I fell into the same problems that have plagued me my whole life, I was depressed when the scale didnt move, so I just started eating anything that was sweet. Even though I dont even really like those cookies Its a mental thing I guess, that we all fight with, this week I lost, but next week I wont! I have been SOOOO discouraged with this 4 week stall, that I was seriously regretting my decision for surgery. Now that its moving again, I feel a little better. That makes sense about the carbs though, being digested faster. Plus, I know that sugar can make you feel hungry faster. I'm definitely back on track now though :) -

Hi my name is Rebecca and I'm getting VSG on March 10th
Rebecca76 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am getting excited and nervous as March 10th gets closer and closer. I've lost 28 lbs so far (Since January 16) and have about 2.5 more weeks of liquids before surgery. I'm drinking New whey Protein bullets (mixed with about 20 oz of Water. I like the fruit punch and "blue" raspberry. None of the New Whey Proteins end up the color you'd think they'd be. I also drink some ensure and Soups. I am 37 years old, 5'10" starting weight was 378 current weight (depending on the scale is between 345-350). -
I've always had bad menstrual cramps but after my third baby, they're REALLY bad. My OB/GYN suggested taking Advil for the two/three days before my period and then continue thru the first 3 days to stay ahead of the pain. Well we all know that Advil is now a no-no and I'm thinking Tylonol isn't going to cut it. My surgeon said he'd write me an Rx for a light narcotic but geez...I have three kids I need to keep track of...I'm not sure if narcotics is the way I want to go. My PCP suggested an IUD but then I'm reading on this board that IUD's can stall weight loss. Any advice/suggestions/tips??

I only had about 75 lbs to lose. If I compare myself to "Joe" who had 175 lbs to lose, it's almost certain that Joe will lose more in the beginning than me. Many obese people retain much more water/fluids than others. The weight lost in those first few weeks is mostly water/fluids. Once you both rid your bodies of the excess fluids, the rate of fat loss should even out. "The jealous competitor. – Don’t be jealous of others. Jealousy is the art of counting someone else’s blessings instead of your own. Stop comparing your journey with everyone else’s. Your journey is YOUR journey, NOT a competition. You are in competition with one person and one person only – yourself. You are competing to be the best you can be. If you want to measure your progress, compare yourself to who you were 30 days ago or last year"

Today was my appointment with the surgeon for a surgery date. He was stuck in surgery so I ended up seeing his assistant. The next available surgery date is June 4th. I know most people would be dancing with joy and excitement to get their surgery date. I've been on this program for six months straight and I had my heart set on May surgery. I know you have to wait 4-6 weeks to swim and I figured I would be able to go swimming on 4th of July. Not bummed about the food aspect or anything else, I just wanted to be feeling good enough to enjoy most of my summer swimming. I don't normally get bummed easily but today I did, I should have been so excited, but for some reason I felt frustrated. I received a call from my favorite Nurse and she's going to be my pre-op nurse. Thank goodness, she's patient and she's out of the same hospital I will be having it at. May 15th we will go over the surgery again, my medicines, tell me what meds to stop and when, which medicines need to be changed out, and she will teach me how to clean the drain, give me the spirometer and show me how to use it. May 21st starts my liquid diet. 14 days. I will be doing 3 protein drinks a day. We are only allowed sugar-free Popsicles, sugar-free jello and crystal light and decaff tea & water besides the three protein drinks. Today I had an appointment with my gastroenterologist, who informed me I have a hernia. That will be fixed during surgery I was assured.

Yay, I'm finally banded!
Gaylancsu replied to SumSum's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was also banded on Oct 8... trying more "regular" foods everyday. I know I'm not eating as much as I used to, but often feel like I am still eating too much, but I think part of that is mental. I don't go in for a fill for 2 weeks... trying to hold it together until then. I only had to pre-op diet 2 days, so all of my weight loss to me is surgery weight loss, which is at 20 pounds, where it's been for 2 weeks. I started eating out late last week, it's just so much my lifestyle since I work full time and I'm in grad school and boy it costs me a lot less now. dinner at wendy's last night was under $3 for chili and plain baked potato ;o) Went to lunch today with friends to a cafeteria style place and the selections were harder. Opted for chicken tenders but pulled of most of the breading and skipped over the dessert and bread section. yesterday at lunch was the first pain I've had from eating something. I grabbed one of those California salads from the Target cafe and I was sitting at work doing work and eating it and wasn't conscious about my chewing and felt a good bit of discomfort as my stomach tried to process it. I will chew from now on! I have a lot to loose, but I'm still very motivated and excited. Can't wait to get a fill. -
I have come to a very scary realization that I don't know how to eat like someone that isn't dieting. Years and years of dieting have left me overweight and completely lost. I am supposed to get banded in about 6 weeks. I've just had my 1st educational class where they talked about diets and how they don't work. SO...I am supposed to listen to my body and eat accordingly to my body signals. I just don't know where to start. Has anyone else had this problem ? What did you do?

I am being banded on 2/19. My doc wants 10 days of low/no carb to shrink liver. What should I be doing now to make life easier afterward? Is there anything you guys wish you had done? Is there any item that you would have purchased? I run my own business and need to do any and everything to minimize downtime. I already have my list of about 100 things I want to do once I get my weight down. How long were you out of work? My job requires me to walk, talk, and drive a car, that's about it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Any Caterers or Professional Chefs out there?
scoutmom replied to scoutmom's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Thank you for the replies....@@Bob B I am thrilled to have found you! Great to have someone that "gets it" as far as my worries. I have lots of questions if you wouldn't mind sharing!! Do you attend tastings with clients - and how do you handle that? We typically sit and sample full menus and wines with clients. If they say something is too salty or they don't like a sauce it helps for me to be able to taste it. I should be approved and ready to schedule surgery the first week of May.....which of course is right smack in the middle of busy season for me. With multiple weddings almost every weekend from May 15 through the end of June, do you think I should wait until July for surgery? I was so happy to hear that you were back so quickly. Since I am in sales and the planning side, I'm not in the kitchen like you are so it is less physically demanding, but the stress is a killer. Do you think I'd be crazy to go ahead with surgery in May? And yes, I'm over thinking this a bit! Where are you in California? Our company is bringing our sales team to Napa and San Francisco this week for some fabulous food + wine. -
We all went through the insurance required 7 months or so of nutrition counseling and weight management. Through out that whole process, I guess all I focused on was how thin I was going to be and not as much on my lifestyle changes. I am 3 weeks out and have had many thoughts of...what the heck have I done? I am on pureed now which is better than pure liquids, but I have major cravings every food commercial or even when I drive by the darn McDonald's. Weight loss has only been 14 pounds which seems ridiculous because I am probably only consuming 400-500 calories a day and exercising. I know it is done now and no going back, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I have buyers remorse. Anyone else feel this way?
