Surgery after Total Thyroidectomy/ Thyroid Cancer
JaniceRNZ replied to Delete my account's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi DC6064. I haven't had my thyroid removed but have had other surgery. I have had gastric bypass 10 weeks ago, but I also have M.E./CFIDS, lupus and depression. I don't want to sound negative, but It is hard going, especially energy wise. I had a severe lack of energy for the last 22 years, but this took it to a whole new level. I am also on throyxine. I would discuss your concerns with the surgeon, and if you don't feel that you have your questions answered, postpone the date of surgery. I found it almost impossible to get information about my surgery and various illnesses. My General practitioner didn't know anything about bariatric surgery and the group of health professionals at the weight loss clinic didn't know anything about Lupus, CFIDS, etc and surgery. Sorry that I can't be of more help. I would just get as much information as you can, especially independent of your weight loss clinic. All the best. -

You're welcome! I hope you are able to revise to a sleeve soon because I really don't think anyone should have to live with a band. -

Sitting on the tarmac, that's a great analogy! My process has been long, for lack of a better word! I decided while visiting family July 4th weekend that it was time to pursue bariatric surgery, after considering it off and on for 20 years or so. Did some research, found a doctor that I felt looked super credible, asked my endocrinologist for a reference, and they referred me to the doctor I had already picked. Called the surgeons office to get the ball rolling and found out our insurance didnt cover the surgery. I went back and forth about just doing self pay and getting the surgery asap, but instead opted to change our insurance to a plan with bariatric coverage during the next insurance enrollment period, which thankfully was in August. New insurance started 10/1, and I called the surgeon that day and got the initial preauthorization and an appointment for the following week! My insurance requires 6 months of medically managed weightloss, and nutrition classes. At first I was bummed that I had to jump through all the hoops to finally get to the surgery but in retrospect Im so glad I've had to 'practice' eating healthier, moving more, etc. I've been to all of the nutrition appointments as of last week, and I've only got two more surgeon appointments left (net week, and March 17). I've already had cardiac clearance, and psych clearance, but need to get primary care physician clearance still (going to see him in March, for that, and prescription refills!) It just hit me last week that I'm almost done with all those 'hoops' and surgery is coming up faster than I realized! The past 4 months kind of sped by, probably because of all the holidays packed in there! I've had good luck with the change in diet. I basically just stopped eating fast food and chocolate, donuts, Cookies, brownies, ice cream, etc. i have a major sweet tooth, so I've substituted fruit for desert. I have apples/oranges/pineapple/bananas/etc after or with almost every meal Using the myfitnesspal ap helped out a ton when I first started too. I stopped using it religiously around Thanksgiving and have just been mindful of each meal being somewhere in the vicinity of 500 calories, as well as ensuring I am eating enough Protein and vegetables. I've managed to continue to lose weight regardless, but I need to get back on track with the ap in the coming weeks. I'm down 30lbs from my initial surgeon visit, insurance required I lose 25, surgeon wanted me to lose 33. So I have 3 more pounds to get off in the next 6 weeks. At the rate Im dropping weight I think I'll bypass that! I hope! This is probably waaaay more information than you were expecting! Fingers crossed for your appointment and a quick surgery date!

OK, this is my first post. I found this site about a week after I had my band placed. It has been so helpful to me to see what everyone else is experiencing. So, thought I would share. I had my band on 6/29/09. I went for my first fill today. Absolutely hate, hate, hate needles. I waited in the exam room for about 45 minutes and made the mistake of looking at the supplies about to used.....AGH! Tip- DONT LOOK! Anyways, he got me on the table lying flat on my back, had me raise my feet a couple of inches up, poked around my port with his hands a few seconds, and bam! He was done! I swear I was in shock at how simple, quick, and painless it was! I would never mislead anyone. I wanted to share b/c I know I contemplated bypass for a while b/c the thought of fills horrified me! Just want anyone out there to know, it was great! :scared2::tt1:

Any Over The Road Truck Drivers
Trucker101 replied to phil's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm looking to get the gastric bypass surgery very soon. I'm a otr truck driver and I'm trying to find as much information as I can for what I can eat from a truck stop if I have to eat at a truck stop. I can take some food with me in my truck because it does have a small refrigerator in it. However, being out for 3 to 5 weeks will make it difficult to take enough food for the entire time on the road. I appreciate the information that has been posted here. If any other truck drivers have anything to add, please do. Thanks. -
Evry person is diff but my surgeon was very clear that if I had acid pre surgery he want to do a bypass and not a sleeve. I didn't have any presurgrru ever

My bariatric doctor told me during my initial consultation that 90% of his patients lose 95 pounds during the first year with gastric bypass. He had never had a sleeve or lap band patient, so that was the only statistic he had on his past patients. To me, 95 pounds in one year would have been amazing. When I switched to VSG, it seemed like 95 pounds in one year would be almost impossible to reach. I was more than ecstatic when I lost 95 pounds five months after surgery. When I lost 140 pounds at 7 months post op, I hit goal. I would love to keep this weight off forever and I know it might be quite a struggle to do so. I've read that most post op patients gain about 10%-20% of their weight back after two years. That would be about a 15 pound gain for me, so I'm trying to decide if I should lose 15 more pounds now.

What other experienced plicaters have said in this post is very true. PATIENCE. Forget the rapid weight loss, it's not gonna happen. Once you make peace with that, you can move on. (: Afterall, remember we did not opt to have gastric bypass. This is gonna be slow going. I had my surgery in February and I'm down about 40 lbs. I sometimes complain to myself it's the slowest weight loss ever and then I remember that before the surgery I never lost any weight at all. I'm down about 2 dress sizes and wearing clothes in the back of the closet I never thought I'd wear again. Just got back from a trip to Europe where I walked, yes walked up the stairs to the Eiffel tower. (One of the elevators was broken so our option was to wait in a 3 hour line for the elevator or take the stairs which was no wait) My friend and workout partner reminded me this is what we've been training for all these months of working out together and we were able to do it. Cant say that I could have accomplished that being 40 lbs heavier. So the minute I start whining about my slow weight loss, I put it in perspective. Be happy with just a couple lbs a month because losing is losing and we will all end up smaller than we were before the surgery!

What’s Your Attitude Towards Carbs?
WalkOnWaking replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
My neighbor, years ago, was coming home from the hospital with her twins. Her hubby was deployed and did not make it back in time for their birth. She also had gestational diabetes and had been following a low-carb diet to help her and the babies. I drove her and the babies home from the hospital, and she had me drive thru a Krispy Kreme for a box of doughnuts. She had bypass surgery years later and has kept it off for over 5 years now. -
Not feeling sure about going through with WLS...
BLERDgirl replied to nolongerhere's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's okay to like yourself and want to be better. I didn't have high blood pressure or diabetes. I always thought I was cute. I agree with @@Babbs this is a lifestyle change. Make sure you are ready to commit. Okay so I'm home now. Let me just say I don't eat low cal food ever. However, like @islandsneezer I am a vegetarian with multiple food and medicine allergies. Mine are: Foods: seafood, stevia, most artificial sweeteners, MSG, food dyes, especially red dye. Medicine: toviaz, percocit, gabapantin, iodine, and latex. I always had an active life style. Plenty of friends, traveled the world, and I love fashion. I have a bunch of minor, but chronic health issues. Now all of these issues individually or in a smaller sized body are completely manageable and tolerable. However the weight made them worse. To the point that I was unable to work. I was told that WLS might make them more manageable. Guess what? I've had 1 very minor episode of swollen lips since my surgery. I no longer get up all night peeing. Back to low cal, restricted diet. I don't do that. One of the things I had to when trying to manage my allergies was keep a food diary. I started eating "clean" Basically no processed foods. I cook most things from scratch. Other than the Protein shakes I still do that. So I never went on a diet. I just started being more mindful of what I ate. I gave up sodas and only drink Water and occasionally fruit juices. As I mentioned before the excess issue is an issue I'll deal with when/if it happens. A good friend of mine had bypass surgery. She lost 60% of her body weight and has no excess skin. All I know is I was 51 and I plan to live another 40/50 years so I wanted to be able to enjoy it. -
I had band problems and mine had to come out my insurance required 6 months of appts and counseling was well worth wait my revision was done November 16 2015. Down 50lbs. It's frustrating to wait but well worth it in the end.

Possible VSG complication 2 years out
CowgirlJane replied to 4dogcrazy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you for the explanation. It clarifies many things. I do not have a"small" sleeve as my surgeon felt that is riskier, so I have often thought that people who say they can eat/drink so much early on (but after swelling subsides) actually don't FEEL the tightness either due to nerve damage or just being used to that stuffed feeling (more of an issue for revision from band). This is why I always tell people to eat by the clock and measuring cup those first few months while the nerves and everything get back to normal. I notice variations in"capacity" frankly based mostly on what I eat. ( note I don't test or push capacity). I still think my basic advice for people is good, but this is new information - and really helps make sense of some things. I am so glad you are able to finally get it addressed. I think a normal healthy sleeve should not be painful, just a smaller stomach! -
I'm 5'2 went into surgery at 223 pounds. I'm like 7 weeks out and I'm 193#. I had gastric bypass, and I'm very excited to be skinny too. Lol. I don't have any co-morbitites either, and I got the surgery to #1 lose weight #2 Stay healthy My luck wouldn't stay good for long at my old weight, it was a matter of time before something happened. So, to all the nay-sayers...I wish I would have done the surgery sooner. Not bouncing up and down in weight from diet to diet. If it was cancer, and not being overweight, nobody would say anything about taking preventative measures... Good luck!!

Hello all, I have been out of surgery for about 6 hours, and I am just trying to navigate everything. Most of what they told me at the hospital was when I was too drugged up to comprehend it all. Firstly, I have been sleeping all day, but getting up to walk every 2 hours. How long do these mini walks to avoid blood clots need to last? Is it okay for me to continue sleeping while doing this until I am not tired anymore? I hardly got any sleep last night, because my brain was all over the place. I have also been almost vomiting, which just ends up being a burp. I can't really control it. Is that okay at this point? I am terrified of damaging anything. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Constantly nauseous
tholbert08 replied to bypassthatbunni's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am starting to read some things under the bypass forum and it kinda freaks me out. I was hoping for the sleeve but the presence of pre barrett's syndrome may force me to have the bypass. I know the surgery is still being done but I almost feel like I am now not able to choose. I can't be constantly nauseous as I am one of our top sales ppl. I can't miss a lot of work just trying to get healthier! Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App -

Keep us updated, I'm hoping you stay feeling this good but we are here for you if you hit a speed bump

I had my Laparoscopic RNY Gastric Bypass this morning at 7:30am and all I've been thinking since then is, how incredibly lucky and blessed that it all went so smoothly. I wish everyone's experience could be as great as mine has been. My insurance is great, had no issues getting approval. The surgery itself was straight forward. And, my recovery is going so well so far, even I am surprised. Pain is not bad. The worst pain has been in my back from lying down all day. So blessed. It should be so great for everyone. I went in for my consult weighing 229lbs, weight this morning was 217.5 thanks to 3 week pre-op diet (last week was liquids & veggies only). They only wanted me to lose 10lbs before surgery. Feeling no hunger whatsoever. Starting to feel a little gassy, but not horrible. I read on one of the threads someone recommended bringing a heating pad, which I did and it came in very handy. Chapstick is definitely a must. I've been sipping water and it's settling well. I never got hooked up to IV pain meds, but they did give me morphine at first. Went to liquid lortab at 1pm and did well with it. Not needing full dose, so that's a good sign. No nausea so far, which is a huge relief because I don't tolerate nausea well at all. I'm a big baby about it. But, I do wonder if that's a good thing long term. Fear of nausea will definitely keep me on track diet wise. So, we will see. Just wanted to share my experience to show how well it can go. Everyone is different, but there is reason to be optimistic. :-). Good luck to all you pre-opers! Can't wait to read about your experiences as well.
