Now that I am on pureed, I notice that my tastes have changed. For example, I really like Greek Yogurt now, whereas before surgery, I couldn't stand it. I bought some shaved pepperoni and ended up throwing it out. I hated the way it tasted and I used to love pepperoni. It's really interesting how things have changed. Even eating is still mechanical and brings me no feeling of joy. It's just eating to live now and I am grateful for it. I wonder if this surgery could be a cure for an eating disorder?

Preop Gastric Surgery Diet Is Awful!
Lissa replied to luv-a-bull's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, the pre-op diet is torture, for sure! If you were a caffeine addict (like me) and/or a sugar addict (also like me), then the initial cravings can be pretty intense. By day 4 or 5, though, you'll already be noticing weight loss and, for me, that gave me the motivation to keep going. Dropping 13 pounds in two weeks was a huge motivator. As Longer Life said, after surgery, you won't be hungry and you'll be pushing yourself to get in your fluids and Protein. "Diet" is going to be your focus for a while to come, although this is really a life change. By the time I got back to solid foods I was definitely over wanting anything sweet, or fat, or slider consistency. Try to find some Protein shakes you LOVE while you're pre-op, because post-op they might be barely tolerable. My tastes changed immediately after surgery AND I am now lactose intolerant. I can do cheese fairly well, but milk, cottage cheese and yogurt disagree with me. If you're having a hard time with the diet because of all the sweet stuff, try some warm broth. After surgery, I found that warm went down better than cold for quite some time. And, all in all, this is a VERY short time period compared to the rest of your life! Easy for me to say now that I'm past it, right? But, it is a short time and soon you'll be back to eating regular food, although not in the quantities you're used to eating. But, you'll be watching the scale zoom downwards, and that's worth a LOT, IMO. Good luck with your journeys!! -
OK, even though I know there’s a whole bunch of you that are going to disregard this PSA, here goes: I am tired of all the sugar free yogurt flavors from OIKOS and Dannon Light & Fit. I try to eat plain Fage as much as I can but sometimes I need some flavor and I’ve just been able to start adding fancy things to my yogurt. So, imagine my excitement when I found this little gem today! It. Is. So. Gross. I mean, right when I got the spoon close to my face, I knew it was going to be terrible, but I did it anyway. Do not eat this item. It is not food. Now, I don’t know why I was excited in the first place. I don’t like pumpkin pie OR pumpkin spice anything. I love cinnamon & nutmeg but I lean toward apple not pumpkin. And pumpkin pie is particularly revolting as the texture is disgusting as well. So, why would I buy this? THAT’S HOW DESPERATE I AM, PEOPLE! You’ve been sufficiently warned. Do what you will.

9 days post op, feel great :)
alyssadietrch replied to alyssadietrch's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well for the first week after the surgery I could have sugar free jello, sugar free Popsicles, broth like bouillon, crystal light in water, Gatorade powerade. Right now I'm in phase 2, so I can have skim milk, nonfat yogurt, low sodium cream soup that's been strained, cottage cheese mashed up. I attached a picture of the stuff I can have now. -
I know Special K protein cereal is a good protein source. We all can dump on different things. What will affect me won't affect you and visa versa. If you really liked it, wait a while, then try it again in a much smaller amount. I personally can't eat cereals by themselves but I like Special K protein mixed into my Greek yogurt. Bear Naked Protein granola is good in yogurt too. Good luck!

thanks and a new heart related question
val144 replied to val144's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the replies, after I spoke to the friend today, I realized she said she was put on blood thinners after her surgery. For other reasons, she was only given a blood thinner before her surgery, as many are. I spoke to several friends about this and they all said they werent put on blood thinners post surgery. Only during the surgery itself. I guess I misread, or misunderstood, or jumped ahead of myself. The reality is hitting me I suppose that I am only 12 days from my date, and maybe I am getting a little freaked out. Trying to stick to the pre-op diet, my doctor told me yesterday to ease up a little, I was pretty much living on broth, yogurt, and bananas and Protein drinks for the last 4 days, she told me I can have some eggs and tuna and green veggies as long as I dont have starchy carby foods, or sugary drinks...for the next 4 or 5 days, then i need to go back on the stricter diet. I think my brain was misfunctioning from malnutrition, just kidding. -
At 3 months, Probably 3-5 fluid ounces at a time (approx 1/2 cup). Lower end it it was meat, higher end if it was yogurt or something “looser”. Now this amount was about the volume to eat that would satisfy as well as not feel any discomfort.

Can't Wait to get Band tight.
BayougirlMrsS replied to RoseyRose's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@@RoseyRose .... all dr. are different and yours may not put in that much. Right now you are in whats called "band-hell" meaning... the band is there and you feel like you should have woke up and not feel hungry. You should still be on your liq. diet and yesssss you will be hungry. Fight through it.. Watch the kinds of liq you are taking in. Make sure they are not high in fat or calories... I wish i could tell you that you will come out of your first fill and not feel hungry.... but there are no guarantees... I have the 14cc band and it took till i had 5.5cc in before i felt "not hungry". Now... going on year 7 i have 10.5cc and im hardly ever hungry. in fact there are days when i forget to eat. I know that sounds strange... but it's true. So, i have to remind myself to eat Breakfast at least... lunch is up in the air. i try and eat supper at least a few bites. If i don't then i am hungry in the am. I have coffee and yogurt with granola most every am. If i do eat lunch its something small and light... Soup/baked sweet potato, guacamole, tuna salad... most of the time i eat it by itself... No bread/crackers/chips... Supper is a few bites of what ever i cook. Last night i fried them shrimp with fries..... I ate 4 small-med size shrimp but i saute mine with a litter pam/butter and ate with a half of avocado. Hang in there.... it is so worth it... the band works if you work it.. -
Definitely consider seeing a therapist to figure out why you are snacking. on protein bars and granola. These sugary things really don't have a place in the post-op diet so soon after surgery. Go back to the information your surgery center provided you with. What does the diet look like? It should be protein (from lean meats, fish, eggs, tofu, cheese, light greek yogurt, etc - not protein bars which are basically candy) and some vegetables. Definitely not granola! And make sure you're getting all your water in; that can be a distraction when you want to snack.

The strawberry is my favorite. It's the only Greek yogurt I like.

I was sleeved on June 26 and I eat when I feel hungry, a cheese stick here, a greek yogurt there, and I try to drink as much as possible. I also like nuts, so I snack on them a couple times a day, or not, depending on the day lol. You will eventually get used to the feeling when you could use a bit to eat. I feel that,,, if I feel hungry, eat some type of protein, so thats what I do. Good luck!

Thanks guys!!! I do light exercise. I'm eating a Greek yogurt right now 12g of protein

Is Vsg Really Right For Me? 2 Weeks Out And I Have The Jitters!
MegInNOLA replied to Susie in Lima's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey there! I'm with you on the "I don't eat too much, I eat the wrong kinds of foods." I was a total junk food junkie, and it cost me a lot of time--time I didn't do what I really wanted to do, see the people I wanted to see, go to the places I wanted to go, etc. etc. because I was embarrassed to be so fat. I want to share with you that for me and for my husband (also a sleever), the sleeve has been a turning point in our eating habits, AND WE DO NOT FEEL DEPRIVED!! My husband was sleeved in 2010; he said then that he wanted something that would serve as a "hand slapper" to tell him it was time to stop eating, since he WAS a volume eater--of the wrong types of foods, double whammy. He was shocked to discover that post-sleeve, his body would pretty much dictate that he avoid junky foods, and he began to PREFER healthier foods like salad and yogurt! My 2-portions-of-spaghetti-with-meatsauce-and-garlic-bread-eating husband PREFERS salads!!! In my case, I had the diet of a teenage boy--I ate junk food almost all the time, washed down with soda. It was ridiculous. I never had a problem with emotional eating or eating too much volume-wise, just made consistently bad food choices. I was hooked on sugar. The sleeve solved that for me by limiting what I could eat until my body got those toxins cleaned out. I always loved vegetables and healthy food; I just never chose it before because I was "super hungry" or whatever--I don't know the reason. Post-sleeve, I find I am eating extremely healthy food in "normal" quantities, never feel deprived or like "oh, I really wish I could have _____," because I'm satisfied from a food point of view. You will probably miss food at the beginning--you'll miss the sense of comfort and routine that a particular food is associated with. But TRUST me, once that weight starts dropping off, and it will soon after surgery, your body changes, your body chemistry changes, and your brain begins to adapt to "the new you." It's WONDERFUL. Getting off all meds caused by poor diet--WONDERFUL. Knowing you're going to live longer because you are healthier--WONDERFUL. Feel free to PM--lots of helpful folks on this board, lots of support. It's entirely up to you, and I wish you the best no matter what you decide to do. -

Threetimesacharm replied to Readytolose2012's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
That is very odd, I am going for surgery on Monday. My packet clearly states full liquid diet: You will remain on this diet for the first four weeks post operatively. Food included: all protien drinks ff milk puddings ff jello sugar free yogurt ff veggie juices soups strained hot cerals made thin and soupy Hope this helps -
Refried Beans are GREAT during this phase. I melt a tiny bit of fat free cheese on top and add a tiny dollop of fat free sour cream. Bam, you've just eaten taco bell! (lol) Also, my surgeon's office said that a meatball with a little sauce and ricotta is good. Tuna, yogurt, cottage cheese, soft fish are all great choices. My fiance actually made me puree'd butternut squash with some seasoning, and it was great! Get creative, or you'll get crazy!! Good luck

pureed foods?!
Inner Surfer Girl replied to fau2nvy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have a puréed stage, just a soft food stage. I ate a lot of cottage cheese, yogurt, refried beans, pudding. The second week of soft foods I could add soft fish so I had salmon, tilapia, and tuna. -

Eating at night
Shrinkingmom replied to Stephanie Stroup McIntosh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
On Sundays I make up a double batch of my "lemon icebox pie yogurt" that I came up with and I put it in 1/2 cup containers in the fridge. When I get home from work I put one in the freezer so by the time I am ready for a snack at night, it is like icecream and by the way, I am an icecream-aholic so I had to find a way to make me think I was getting it. LOL! I top it with some Rediwhip and it is the perfect snack. About 18g Protein and 120 calories. I also quit eating a snack during the day and just eat one at night. When I reached goal, I was having a hard time maintaining while eating 2 Snacks. You have to do what works for you. By the way, if you are interested: Lemon Icebox Pie Yogurt 2 C Plain Nonfat Greek Yogurt 1/4 C Lemon juice 2 Scoops vanilla Protein powder 10 packs Truvia 1 Box sugar free Instant Lemon pudding Mix Mix first 4 ingredients well with mixer, add pudding mix and use mixer to blend. Will get very thick. Spoon into 1/2 cup containers. (I double the batch because I eat it for breakfast a lot and my husband loves it too! You can also put this in a low fat graham cracker pie crust and take it to family gatherings so you will have something to eat. Noone knows it is healthy and everyone thinks it is a lemon icebox pie) -
18 days post-op here and I've been trying some soft foods. Apart from yogurt, ANYTHING I try makes me flushed and have a fast heart rate. I feel like my heart is beating faster than normal also, as an aside. Does anyone know what's going on here? Getting SO discouraged.

Had a good weekend. We had some snow in the area Friday nite into Saturday morning. Yesterday the sun was out.:clap2: They say it will be about 73 today I hope so, I need sunshine to function correctly. I was a hungry this weekend, but made it through ok. I'm not losing much right now. I seem to be able to eat almost anything, but have stuck to the diet for the most part. I would love to have some pizza and tacos, but if I give in to that craving I might fine out it to easy to eat all the wrong things. I have my 1st fill next week. I see online that most say to fast for a couple hours before, but I didn't get any info on that. So I will take advice of the blogger out there and fast for a while. Really nervous about the fill. Just don't know what will happen. I tried shrimp this weekend and it was fine, just had to chew more than some foods. I still have some trouble with chicken, but not bad. Still need to slow down, between bites. I have done a lot of cheese, cottage cheese, and yogurt. I have some different protien powders, but have not found one the is totally great. I miss my glocosamine, chondrotin. My right knee keeps me awake at nite. I fine myself waking up moaning. It gets very stiff and it really hurts to move it. I have tried a liquid glocsamine chondrotin, but it really is nasty. I will try crushing the pill again, it just it is a lot of pill powder to get down. Today will be a great day for weight loss and walking. I must walk today!!!!!!!

I got permission to start cottage cheese and Greek yogurt. They said they recommend 2% or lower but all I could find at the local store was 4%. Am I okay to have that until I can go into town to the major grocer? I didn't know if the recommendation was based on calorie/fat diet wise or if more fat will do damage or be hard to digest? It doesn't seem like that big of a difference. And I really don't want to wait Haha I am ready for a Protein besides those friggin shakes.
-
No, it's not painful. It's almost like a real dull heartburn sensation, but not really LIKE heartburn. Hard to describe I guess. I see we were banded on the same day!! Are you still on clear liquids? I'm sick of broth, and juice!! They told me I could add drinkable yogurt yesterday, and that was a "little" better. Still doesn't compare to REAL FOOD. LOL:hungry: Donna

Protein drinks make me nauseous
BigSue replied to Jnfinney's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you tried protein hot cocoa? I found that much easier to drink than cold protein shakes. A lot of people like to use protein shakes as coffee creamer (caramel shakes work well for this). Have you tried clear protein, like Syntrax Nectar? That's more like juice than a shake, so you might find it more tolerable. You can also try protein soups, or mixing unflavored protein powder into regular soup. Are you allowed to have purees yet? If so, you can mix unflavored protein powder into almost anything pureed. (I prefer to use flavored protein powders with sweet purees like yogurt, pudding, applesauce, oatmeal, etc. and unflavored in savory foods like refried beans, mashed cauliflower, soup, etc.). -
Congrats. I've tried some Greek yogurt thinned down with milk.
