    Lapband to By-Pass

I will be having my band removed and switched to bypass on 4/8.

    Just introducing myself

What made you choose bypass vs sleeve?
  3. I had my sleeve on 5/21/12. I've lost 128 pounds to date. I have very bad GERD and the worst part is esophageal spasms. They are taking over my life! They are so painful and they feel like a heart attack. I've been having them daily and usually wake up around 4 am with this terrible pain in my ears, then throat, chest, and right side where my sleeve is. These things will throw you down on your knees they hurt so bad. I'm on Levsin that I put under my tongue when they happen to help relieve them. I've never experience anything like this. My surgeon thinks they could be caused from GERD. I'm not so sure. I was scheduled for a Bravo Capsule endoscope on Monday and a Manometry on Wed and I've decided to back out of both. I've read where the capsule can damage the esophagus and could get lodged in the intestines when it falls off the esophagus in 7 days if you're lucky. Sometimes it doesn't fall off and there it is stuck and causing more problems. I just can't take the chance, I know I have GERD and all this test does is measure how much acid I have in my stomach over a 24 hour period. Nahhh I think I will just not do it. I'm tired . Sick and tired of these test!!! I'm more sick of the spasms that feel like labor pains and then leave me drained and sore. Well, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. The surgeon wants to revise me to RNY but I absolutely do not want to do it. I guess I will take my chances and see if something else can be done. I know that gastroenterologist will use botox to stop the spasms but I'm scared to go to someone who isn't familiar with the sleeve but I'm not trusting my surgeon either right now. He is so busy and he just heards people in and out like cattle. Ok, well if anyone has had experience with these horrid things, please respond! Thank you!

    Tomato trouble?

I am reading through the handbook my surgeon provided, and it cautions that post surgery, tomatoes may cause distress. I love tomatoes, and hope this does not happen. My birthday is tomorrow, and I was given a Miracle Gro Aerogarden with cherry tomato pods to grow indoors. I realize that I can't have any now, as I'm on the liver - reduction diet til my surgery on Tuesday, but my husband loves salad with tomatoes. Has anyone had trouble with tomatoes a few months after their bypass surgery?
  5. I figured since so many people have revisions from sleeve to RNY, I’d just have RNY to begin with. Higher weight loss and keep more weight off longer, per data.
  6. For me it's because of my acid reflux. I know a lot of overweight people have reflux that goes away with weight loss but mine is just hereditary. I have had reflux since I was 16. I was 115 lbs. My surgeon agrees that because of my family history (mom and grandmother both have severe reflux) that bypass is the way to go. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. For a revision to sleeve or bypass? I don't see why you wouldn't have to go the whole 6 month waiting period that most insurance companies have unless you're self-pay. Even then most GOOD WLS clinics have a protocol you must go through that can take a while.

    Needing Somw Advise!

I lost 30lbs of the 100+ I needed to lose with the band. The only reason I lost so much was due to an only liquid diet. I couldn't get anything else down. I was miserable and my husband thought I looked sickly. I would try to eat chicken breast and it would come back up or hurt when it finally went down. I was banded in 2009. Now when I eat I have anxiety. Will it go down, will it get stuck, why can't I eat properly? I ammore focused on food now than I was pre band. I hope your surgeon let's you change to the sleeve if that's what you want. I am in the process of getting a revision and I can't wait until I don't have to fear food anymore.

    Needing Somw Advise!

I am not an expert but have done extensive research. My surgeon DOES NOT even place bands any more because of all of the complications. Please think long and hard before you choose that option. I chose gastric bypass because the long term results were better than sleeve and more reflux and nausea with sleeve. Good luck to you!

  11. I was lactose intolerant for a couple months following RNY gastric bypass surgery. I used Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Creme) blended with Water and with a half a banana blended in. It does not contain lactose.

    Surgery aborted

Hi, sorry that you are disappointed. I had a gastric bypass on 3 March 2017 and the surgeon noticed a lot of scar tissue and tissue adhesion during the surgery. The surgery was twice as long as planned. I had to pay for my surgery, (very little is covered by the public health system in New Zealand, and private insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery here), I'm wondering if I hadn't paid, whether the surgery would have been aborted. I have M.E. and Lupus as well. This journey has turned out to be a lot harder than I mentally prepared myself for.
  13. I'm so happy to have has my revision from band to sleeve. So much better. Just had my 4-month (almost) post-op appt. SW - 222 CW - 176 46 Lbs s GONE!! Praise God!!!
  14. Me? Yes. I'm scheduled for revision on May 11th.

    Coffee/caffeine

Yup, I meant "gastric bypass" patients have malabsorption issues. Sorry for the confusion. Fixed it.
  16. this is my second go around with surgery with the 1st one in 2011 i lost 15 pre-op, Now for the revision I start my liquid diet Wednesday. But from the 1st appointment with the new doc (sepetember) I've dropped 15lbs. (plus I can eat a little better now that he emptied my band)

    Struggling with Second Thoughts

I had RNY surgery 29 months ago. Severe acid reflux or GERD is incompatible with the sleeve. RNY is definitely the better choice here. I had several episodes of severe acid reflux before surgery and none since. I had a number of medical conditions prior to surgery and the main reason why I did the surgery was to get those under control. Within days after surgery, my diabetes, high blood pressure, GERD, sleep apnea, frequent urination problems went into remission and stayed there. I was off my meds. One of the reasons why I liked RNY was that it caused you to lose weight the quickest and produced the deepest weight loss and most importantly had the least amount of revisions. If I went under the knife once, I sure did not want to do it again, and again. RNY surgery is not like dieting. I tried dieting a couple times and it was a complete failure. After surgery I completely lost my hunger. It wasn't difficult to lose weight when hunger was not constantly gnawing at my bones.
  18. 8 lbs! Wow. 3 previous cruises I didn't gain a lb. This is the first one with no fill in my band (slipped last month, waiting till late June for a sleeve revision). I ate with no abandon. eggs Benedict and corn beef hash for Breakfast, the buffet for lunch, a lavish dinner - and has anyone had Carnival Cruise Lines warm chocolate melting cake? It's to die for. I ate it EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. Then at about 11 pm, I'd order another dessert from room service- just because I could. Didn't go to the gym even once. Walked alot in ports, but obviously not enough. So it's official. I've now gained 30 lbs since getting married Dec 2011. It just crept up on me. About 1/2 of my closet doesn't fit anymore. I was down to an 8 and now I'm wearing about an 11/12. Hubby keeps telling me I should cut my carbs (he's a carb-a-phobe), but I feel like "hey, I'm having the sleeve done next month. Why not eat whatever I want?" I'm going to the dr on Monday to get my surgery date. I'm so embarrassed at my weight gain. And to top it off, we lost our camera on the last day of our cruise. All 500 pics of our week is gone. All those memories. No one turned it to lost and found. At least we have the memories to keep in our heads. What would you do if you were having the sleeve done next month? Try to lose weight or say to heack with it? I know what I'm going to hear "If you're not ready to change your diet then you're not ready for the sleeve". I AM ready. My band failed after 3 1/2 yrs (totally my fault, frequent vomiting) and I NEED something to help me take off the rest and maintain forever. It's why I got the band in the first place. I hate dieting. Marci

    Expecting Lap Band removal

I found the band removal fairly easy. Physically, other than mild pain and a miserably achy port-site, I felt really good within a week and was back at work 5 days post-op. my energy level was awesome because I could actually eat real food for the first time in forever . Emotionally I was a mess though. I was supposed to be a revision to RNY BUT WOKE UP WITH ONLY A BAND REMOVAL. I HAD SO MUCH SCARRING AND INFLAMMATION FROM MY BAND THAT THE SURGEON WAS. ABLE TO DO THE REVISION AT THAT TIME...that was hard . No clue why that's all caps but too last to retype it sorry!!! And good luck!!!!
  20. The sleeve is fabulous, and if you had success with a restrictive band, then the sleeve is a good choice. Don't get me wrong, you can eat around the sleeve just like you can with the band, but it sounds like you did good with the band. I had it, it worked until the complications started and I revised to the sleeve. RNY, DS was not an option for me. I posted a lot of my story for others looking at band to sleeve, and you can read some of previous threads in this forum to see all of the band to revisions progress.

I Have A Leak In My Gastric Sleeve!

I personally think that while the leak rate MIGHT be 1%, I think the overall complication rate is higher... I think I saw a study that suggested around 2-3% since leak isn't the only complication. I was a band to sleeve revision and the surgeon told me that our risks were probably "about double" that of a virgin sleeve. Scared the crud out of me, but I was in a pretty bad way at 308 pounds, 52 BMI so finally decided I was going to die of obesity if i didn't take the risk. I thank God on a regular basis how well this has gone, no complications so far, and that while I am not at goal I am a normal sized person and my life has changed for the wonderful! It is so scary to read about the complications, but it makes me so happy to read the "happy endings" when people get over it and get back to the business of losing weight and being healthy!

    Bypass Vs Sleeve

Caroline everything you said are my same thoughts... pregnancy apparently not an issue with anything I'm told that over and over... I'm trying to decide between the 2 procedures also and until about 5 days ago there is no way I would ever done by pass.... my doctor the first two visits thinking about doing the sleeve and the more we talk today he said definitely go with bypass the extra accountability will help me long term, im 5'7, 270, 33yrs, size 16... I think of the Unknown afterwards it scares me as far as the dumping what to eat how to eat
  23. Welcome MMK. I'm from Lawrenceburg, TN, and everyone i know that has had WLS all had the bypass went to Centennial (that is where Dr. Lynch is from I believe I heard someone mention his name at my support group), and had nothing but good things to say. I was suppose to go to Vanderbilt, but I ran into a road block, I'm trying to cross over now. Good luck on your surgery, and let me tell you this site is awesome, you will learn alot on here. I know I have. Keep us posted.
  24. I'm not quite 3 months out of my surgery which is the Loop Duodenal Switch, same as you, but a potential revision is something I was worried about when I agreed to this surgery because I only know two people who got this surgery and BOTH needed revisions. 1. because he got a really bad malnutrition issue so they had to fix him back so it was essentially just the sleeve now (though his was, admittedly the DS not the Loop) and 2. because she went from being over 400 pounds to being 95 pounds in two years! She's 5'5. After her revision she's at a much healthier 123 now. She had originally had the Loop. I, like yourself, very much do not want to go through a revision, but I figure if it happens then they'd just be fixing my intestines so the whole 'phases' wouldn't be necessary. I mean yeah, you'd have to eat lighter meals for a while, but they wouldn't be messing with your stomach for the revision so it's why I still went with the Loop. I won't like it if I have to eventually have a revision, but both of theirs happened in the second year so I'm not going to stress until then. Likely your weight loss will slow down eventually. You just still have some more to lose. For your height you could technically get down to 92 pounds and still be considered in the normal range. And if you don't like what the doctor says... get a second opinion. Especially if it's a surgery you don't want!
  25. I have a virgin RNY, not a revision, but I had almost no pain with this surgery. Part of me wondered at first if he actually even did the surgery... most people getting a revision do get an immediate relief from GERD (not all - but most), and additional weight loss is around 20 lbs, but I'm sure that depends on your BMI and how hard you work at losing weight. I'm sure you can find people who've lost more than that.
