  1. Wow, my first wls was done on 08/01/2014. My highest recorded weight was 289 and that was underestimate. I am currently 215. I have GERD & 2 hernias! I am in pain each day. I work full-time and have insurance. I found a new doctor. It appears, he is in my corner. I have 2 avenues to pay for this revision. Remember that you are important and obesity is a real disease. 2. Hiii everyone I’m Sasha. I had vsg surgery in 2018 and I will be having it revised to bypass 12/22. Looking for any surgery buddies around that time. I’m also excited to read everyone’s journeys on the subject so that I may prepare and not seem so alone. I hope everyone is well on this Saturday❤️

    August surgery buddies!

Hi guys. Today I’m exactly 2 months out and wanted to give you all an update! I’ve lost 43lbs. Since my revision to sleeve. And 23 inches all around. This is so much faster than I ever lost with my lapband. I still have an aversion to certain flavors and I can only drink my protein shake if its in coffee. On its own it sends me running to the bathroom. Which is weird. My dr told me to stop drinking the protein shakes anyway and that I should start getting my proteins only from meals. I think I’ll be able to do that even though I can usually only fit about 4 ounces (we’ll see) the problem is that I’m not really a cook or kitchen person so I find myself eating the same things over and over and then making myself sick of them. This in turn means I’m quickly running out of choices. I weirdly can’t see the changes in my body but I know that they’re there because I’d definitely fit differently in my clothes and differently into seats and things like that. But the body dysmorphia is real y’all! I usually take pictures at every month anniversary and when I look back at what I looked like from the beginning to now, I still feel like I look the same—which again is weird because I thought that the pictures were supposed to show me that I actually am losing weight but oh well. Luckily I have a therapist, so I think I’m gonna bring this up at my therapy session tomorrow. I don’t come on here often, but I do read every single comment that gets posted so I really do appreciate people continuing to post here and talk about how they’re doing…it makes you feel a little less lonely, so thanks!

    New, Dazed and Confused

Lap Band to RNY for severe GERD. I haven't dumped yet and don't think I will be a dumper. I gave up Celebrex seven months before revision surgery and have been fine. (RA patient here) I have virtually zero pain. Losing weight helps reduce inflammation and reduce the need for nsaids it seems. And you're right, you don't want wls induced GERD. It sucks. Meds won't even help when you get this type of GERD. All I can speak to is my personal experiences and comparing RNY to lap band, which I know is antiquated now but RNY feels completely natural to me and I'd do it again if I had to all over again and could choose from any wls. Best wishes!

    New, Dazed and Confused

RNY here. Revised over a year ago from VSG due to severe gerd. I don't dump, I believe most don't and can be avoided if you do, as@catwoman7 said. Maybe that's why I don't dump, I don't really have a sweet tooth. Not sure but it isn't as common as people think. I can take any medication except NSAIDs (same with VSG, I believe). I really have no negative things to say about the RNY. It has been an extremely positive experience for me. Both surgeries are excellent though and congrats on the beginning of your journey.
  7. Hi all. I've been lurking the past few weeks, researching heavily. My insurance has cleared me for sleeve but I'm not as sure now as I was when I chose that surgery. My last hurdle is labs and upper GI. I'm bouncing back and forth between sleeve and bypass. My doubts about the sleeve include the risk of developing GERD. I see a lot of revision stories and I don't want that. My main reason for choosing the sleeve was to keep the pyloric valve intact and avoid dumping. It also seems to allow normal medication action - I take a number of meds. I'm creating a list of questions for my surgeon because I want to make the best choice but man, I must admit to feeling dizzy with all this information. It's a big step. I'll save my dietary questions for another post. Thanks already for the great information I've gotten from reading through this forum!
  8. The antibody restriction was for everyone. No one can get antibiotics that often anymore due to the increasing problem of antibiotic resistance. Usually doctors would only ok a prescription every 3 months to any of their patients. I haven't had one since my revision. Going on 15 months now, not a sign of it. Thanks for the tip about D-mannose. I hope to never get them as often like I did for years post vsg, pre revision. That was miserable. I never linked it to my vsg though until after I get my revision and they totally disappeared. Makes me wonder.
  9. That's right. So strange. I had the most difficult time getting treatment because how often they occurred. "Too soon for another prescription for antibiotics..." Etc. Over 1 yr. 2 months now, not one UTI (I would've had 3 or 4 in that time frame pre-revision. I have no idea why the sleeve gave me constant UTIs. Never heard of it nor read about it so at the time, I didn't think it was connected. I honestly didn't think it was the sleeve until a couple of months after my revision, I was like... Wait, what happened to my constant UTIs? So glad there is someone else out there that can identify with me.

3 years post VSG to RNY

I too had a lot of UTIs post sleeve! Isn’t that weird? And with the antibiotic restrictions post weight loss surgery they were hard to treat! Post revision I haven’t had one yet so yay! I’m glad I’m not the only one who experienced that with the sleeve…I thought I was just gross 😬
  11. I’m losing slower with the revision but it’s still very respectable loss. -78 in 5 months so far.
  12. I had my revision done with the same person so the diet was exactly the same post op. Bonus was I only had a 1 week liquid diet instead of 2. I don’t feel restricted or get full cues so I have to weigh every single thing so I don’t over eat. Because I definitely have got sick/dry heaves when I was lazy and didn’t weigh.
  13. I’m not in this position, I was revised for both GERD and regain. But I self paid. Could maybe look into that, or a revision in Mexico is always cheaper. There’s a lot of people on here and tik tok that went to Mexico 🤣

    October 2022 surgery support

5'10, 388lbs. Had my VSG revision to a SADI-S yesterday and am now home. Looking forward to getting my life back again.
  15. So, I have seen a lot of people getting the revision from sleeve to bypass due to GERD and I have seen people getting the sleeve to bypass revision due to weight gain years after the original surgery. I am not experiencing either of these issues. I had my surgery in the middle of 2021. I was around 300 pounds then. It is now more than a year later. I have only lost around 70 pounds. I am still losing, but very slowly. I feel like due to my starting weight, I should have lost more than that in this time period. I am not ungrateful for the weight I have lost so far, but I want to lose much more and I am feeling a bit stagnant. I want to truly get down to a normal weight. I feel like it will take me forever to do that with the sleeve, so I want to get the gastric bypass. I feel like getting a revision to bypass would jumpstart the weight loss for me again. But I am wondering if I would even be able to get approved for a revision in my position, since I am not suffering from any other medical conditions and I haven't actually regained any of my weight. Is there anyone else in my position who has gotten a revision from sleeve to bypass so soon after the original surgery with no other medical conditions, just because they felt like they didn't lose enough weight with the original surgery?

    Lap band questions

Yeah I went through this ten years ago, when Lap Bands were still a thing. They're antiquated torture devices and I can't understand a medical doctor placing a device now that is comparable to giving a patient symptoms of an eating disorder. I would seek a second opinion about a revision at a different bariatric center about a different weight loss surgery BEFORE you have permanent damage done from the Lap Band. Best wishes to you.

    Help getting back on track

Is your blood sugar normal? Were you type 2 before the surgery? It’s hard to control cravings with these issues unless you are very careful about controlling carbs. Does the bariatric center you used have a post surgery support group? Can you schedule appointments to be followed with the dietician? Get yourself support especially from people who will help hold you accountable to yourself. I did not do this stuff the first time and regained. Now I’m getting ready for a revision and in hindsight I see what I should have done.

Anyone else do a VSG to ESG?

I want to get back to my original goal weight which is 135. Im 5'4" tall. I stayed between 130 and 135 for almost 7 years. I slowly gained over the past 5 years til I reached 182. On surgery day, I weighed 177. My starting weight from the very beginning was 235 so we are close in stats! I have about 30 pounds to go. I just started on regular food because my doctor put me on clears for 10 days instead of 2 days and 2 weeks for each stage after that. I have a little trouble getting all the water in but its helping me not to retain so much water. My body loves to store the water that I drink, if I dont get enough for it to decide I am not in a desert. lol. Good luck with whatever dicision you make. I am rooting for you to get to goal even if you dont have a revision. I am keeping my carbs low and protein high. They say I dont have a set goal for carbs but I try to keep it under about 40.

    Did I eat too much?

It also sheds some light on the often poor results in regards to weight loss after revision surgery (exception seems to be band to bypass; these patients often seem to have good results).
  20. I think it depends on your diet. If you track, are you meeting 100% of your vitamins and minerals from your diet alone? I always come up short on certain vitamins through my diet so even after years of having VSG (Before RNY revision), I took a multivitamin, sometimes calcium chews.
  21. When I answered above I was thinking of the physical sensations as I ate, not when I get full. I usually stop at about 80% full. But true true that if I overate (with the VSG), I would get serious heart palpitations and not feel well till I finish digesting it. After the RNY revision, if I take one bite too many, I get a runny nose.
  22. I have had two knee replacements and one of them was a horrible mess from the start. I'd like to not have to have revisions as long as possible. I am so close to diabetic, but I have fought to not take any medications for 12 years after my messed up knee replacement. I am on medication for high blood pressure, my cholesterol is high, my hips are hurting and I just want to be able to move better without as much pain and live a very long happy life with my husband and our fur-kids. I have tried everything out there and loose weight, but it comes right back on when I try to eat real foods.
  23. Interesting question, Kim. A good one. I don't think anyone has asked me that before. I didn't have any different physical sensation with either the vsg or revision except a feeling of tightness in the morning meal only, especially in the beginning. That was solved by drinking a warm drink, like coffee or tea, first to loosen it up a little. There was/is no pain whatsoever otherwise.

    Awful doctor experience

I will agree with the others your options are to a) accept the surgeon's social awkwardness/rudeness if the other clinic members are supportive, or b) find a different surgeon/clinic. In your shoes I would probably look for another surgeon/clinic. I do want to point out that the RNY bypass surgery is generally accepted to be more effective than VSG. RNY results in greater weight loss, resolves heartburn/GERD, and resolves, improves, or prevents Diabetes 2. Some say VSG is a "more invasive" surgery, but frankly, removing 80% of your stomach is pretty damn invasive. With RNY bypass the stomach is separated but not removed. Both are performed laparoscopically. The VSG is easier and quicker for the surgeon. However, a lot of VSG patients have to have revision to RNY later.
