    first fill - 3 pokes

i wrote to the program director asking about the fill and if they do one sooner than a month. i ask some other things but she didn't reply to, but this is what she had to say and i thought others may find it interesting. Hi Susan. You may not have restriction after the first fill, and it may take a couple of weeks to tell and sometimes up to 4 weeks, so we do not fill sooner than 4 weeks. Everyone is different, has a different size stomach, and that is why we have to progress to what we consider your sweet spot where you are able to eat your 1/2 cup and are satisfied until your next meal. Just make sure that you use your saucer to eat and do not overeat and stretch your stomach before we get to that fill where you are feeling that restriction.

    Exercise

I walk as often as I can and on average four days a week. Started with about a mile and have been doing 2.5 to 3 miles for quite some time now. I don't jog but I don't saunter either. Guess I'd call it a fast walk. Didn't do any weight training until this week. I lost some muscle mass in my upper arms so I'm trying to get some of that back. But I have to say that I feel absolutely great and look forward to walking. I started walking on my treadmill but soon changed to walking in a park near my home. I enjoy the park more and so does my black lab. I'm 27 weeks post-op and it took several months but at this point I'm really quite addicted to walking. There is absolutely no question in my mind that walking has helped me enormously with the weight loss. I also feel better, physically and mentally, when I walk. I have noticed that I get tense and irritable when I don't walk for two or three days. Can't explain it but it definitely happens.

I do cardio (walking/jogging) on the treadmill on tuesday's and thursdays....on monday, wenesdays and fridays I weight train....so I work out 5 days a week! I'm kinda frustrated because I have only lost 8 lbs in the last 3 weeks and this morning the scale tried to telling me I gained 11 lbs.....I have no clue how that happened!
  4. what do you do when your surgeon doesn't really want to do fills?I was banded in August 09...I have lost 30 pounds but I only have 3cc in my 14cc band. I have NO restriction. My band started out empty...fist fill 8 weeks after surgery. 1.5cc, next fill 6 more weeks....1/2c...3rd fill 12 weeks after that 1.0cc! He doesn't want to see me back for ANOTHER 12 weeks. I am eating less than I used to and trying to concentrate on proteins and A LOT less carbs...but if I had the willpower to do it myself, I would never have gotten the band. Help!
  5. I was going to say that if you're price shopping, Dr. Aceves isn't exactly the cheapest Mexican surgeon. He's just the best one! I could have chosen to have surgery anywhere in the world. I'm lucky enough to have great credit, and my bank was willing to grant me an unsecured loan up to $20K. I was living in Germany and couldn't find a doctor experienced enough with sleeves to do it there (where it would have cost a fortune in euros vs. dollars for self pay), or I would have had it done in Germany and saved myself the two days of travel back and forth. I chose Dr. Aceves after carefully researching three other stateside doctors, all of them good, all of them experienced and all of them good choices. But as someone self-paying and flying 11 hours to do this, I wanted the BEST care, with the longest possible hospital stay. Dr. Aceves fit the bill and I cannot complain at all. I urge everyone, regardless of where you're having surgery done, to DO YOUR RESEARCH. Do not assume that just because your doctor is American that he/she is automatically a great choice. Review statistics, look up as many reviews/recommends as you can. Do the leg work. This is your LIFE on the line if you choose an inexperienced doctor. And sometimes, sh*t happens and even an experienced doctor can have a leak and you can suffer complications. It's a hazard of choosing a serious surgery. So do your leg work and be prepared. Finally, I would like to comment on the notes about Dr. Rodriguez. While I do not discount that this person had legitimate reasons to be concerned, I'd say that when you choose to go to a hospital out of America you can't be upset if they're not 100% to American standards. This issue is on the patient for not researching adequately, though I do appreciate that she shared her experience for everyone else. Word of mouth is very important. If she had an allergy this could have been a fatal operation. I have had two operations and countless medical appointments outside of America and can honestly say that even top notch care in another country can seem outdated or not as safe to us because we're so incredibly used to American care. I was amazed to see old school glass bottles and plastic tubing were going to be my IV when I was in Kyiv for a procedure, but they broke out clean, sterilized tubing and a sterile needle without my mentioning anything so I felt comfortable. Sometimes you have to go with the flow, but above all, try to be prepared. ~Cheri

  7. Hi all, Just wanted to check in, I had my first fill 1.75cc today (5 weeks after surgery), I'm happy because last week I was starting to get hungry and it worried me. They told me in the office today that that's not unusal. I did lose another 5lbs since my last weight in 3.5 weeks ago, totally 17 pounds in 5 weeks. I'm a slow loser so that' good for me. Love my Band

March 23rd... this is my day!

Yes...it is hard to believe sometimes looking at where I came from...it seemed to take so long, but in hindsight it went pretty fast, too! I have struggled off and on as I need to exercise more in order to lose....I am on a plateau and unfortunately am rather complacent there! I am hoping that spring and the good weather will help me with that....as I would like to lose more - and tone up quite a bit. As a working mother with three kids it is hard to find time for me! Kim

    help

I had my band two weeks ago, I followed the protein shake diet and followed the clearr liquid diet for week one post-op and now full liquid for week two. I have a huge amount of pain mid abdominal and mid back and am also vomiting 2-4 times a day for no reason. I called the doctors office, but staff did not seem overly concerned. I am weak, have a huge amount of pain and have had a headache since the surgery. Has anyone else had a similar experience?:smile2:

    help

Thanks for the comments. Went to see the surgeon yesterday. It appears, feeling this bad is NOT Normal. It appears I should have had an anti-nausea medication the night before surgery to reduce any nausea. The stitches ripped creating a fistula where fluid is moving through the stomach and also around the capsule that is brought up and sewn to hold the band in place. As it appears now the band is going to have to be removed. I am so hurt and angry. I have gone through all of this for nothing. I have truely been misable for the last two weeks and to find out that it could have been prevented and now will have to be removed is heartbreaking.

    help

Call back and tell them you need to come in. My surgery was quick, easy and pretty much painless. By day 3 I was back to normal. To be two weeks in and still having that much trouble I would go in and speak with them, especially since you're vomiting which can cause slippage.

11/18/10 Thanks for Sharing; A Blog of Substance

Hello Girlfriend and Triple HUGS and Kisses I was reading your blog and I can relate so well to all of it. I have stayed the same for 5 months now. I can remember being as tight as I ever wanted to be and that is so NOT a good place to be. I remember the unwanted weight plateaus, and how long they lasted. It just happens and I just had to deal with it. I can remember not owning a scale and having to wait until I went to the Dr.'s office to get weighed in. When I inherited a scale I started weighing myself morning, noon, and night. I was crazy. It made me crazy. Now I had to train myself only to step on it once a week. I also had to train myself to eat foods that would be helpful with my band. I found many foods left me hungry and some foods made me full for longer periods of time. I had to commit to eating foods that kept me full longer. I still have some cravings but they are more easy to deal with. I feel like I am a trained Dog!! LOL Yup imaluckydog Blogging is such an important part of the Training Program. I know I have done a better job of working with my band because of being able to read blogs and write them. We even blogged to each other the day I was banded. I will never forget your loving support and caring. I knew I had a friend I could share my thoughts with. I didn't even know at the time if my surgery would happen that day. I am so happy to say that you empowered me by saying it is was up to me to create my own destiny. I love playing with my band and I will always be a member of your band. Love you BandGroupie and Happy Thanksgiving. Best wishes, imaluckydog
  13. Hi Beth, There is a really good letter in the Insurance thread that Alex had written to her insurance company who also would cover the by-pass but not the band. She was able to eventually get them to cover the band. You should look for that letter in that threads archives. There is also a book written by Jessie H. Ahroni, about the lapband. Called Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding. I took a week off work after surgery. My surgery was in Mexico and has been very successful. Good luck on your research. Teresa Alex: I think we should make a sticky note on one of the main threads called publications and news releases. That way people don't have to search all over the forum to find references to books or articles. What do you think?
  14. Hi Gigi, I made the revision from lap band to gastric sleeve recently. My doctor required a three month wait between band removal and sleeve surgery. He said a lot of the callous tissue that builds around the band will subside if given a waiting period. It made sense to me, and asking around in my area at seminars pre-decision to do this, all the doctors (under my medical coverage) in my local area were of the same opinion. They said simply, waiting was safer. The band removal was quick. I was in surgery and out same morning. The port site, removal, was the most painful area for a few days. The sleeve pain levels were less than the band removal, however new eating rules and such of course have been a much bigger event after the sleeve. Best wishes to your husband, and you. It's great to see your support already in this, as My husband has been terrific supporting me.

    Advice needed pleeeeease!!!!

I was almost denied because of depression. I failed my first psych evaluation. I had started taking Effexor, an anti-depressant, about 4 weeks prior to that evaluation. Typically, it takes 6 weeks before the Effexor is stabalized in the bloodstream enough to see the full effects. So the psychologist told me I could re-take the test after two more weeks. My test showed that I was still depressed but it was under control now. Severe depression, in remission was his notation on my approval. I think that many of us have weight related complications, both physically and mentally, which need to be under control in order for the surgery and following journey to be a success. Giving up food and the extreme lifestyle change that happens with weightloss can be overwhelming. And if we are already teetering on the edge, well... they don't want to push us over. Talk to your doctor about getting some medical help with the depression and find out if you can be evaluated after you've had time for it to really begin working in your body. Best of luck to you in your journey. Sincerely,

    the dreaded stall...

Thanks! My stalls so far seem to only last 2-3 days then I lose a pound or two. I started working out and lifting some weights to help try to tone up...we will see how that works! We are all doing so great! This is going to be such a wonderful year!
  17. I had plastic surgery sort of back to back. I had my first procedure in September 2014, the next one in November 2014, and the last one in March 2015. I didn't notice a difference in my hair. My hair thinned after sleeve surgery and did it again randomly last summer and again randomly about a month ago, but I can't really attribute it to surgery because so many people have surgery and don't have hair loss. After sleeve it's more that you body is so shocked by first, the fact that you cut out its stomach, and second the fact that you feed it next to nothing for weeks. Minimization of hair loss can usually be helped by making sure you get your Vitamins, Protein, and general nutrients. I also recently read that Potassium can help prevent hair loss.
  18. ticker.... its down to single digits. When I first put it up it was at 1 month, 2 weeks, and 1 day!!!! OMG its really real. 19. Yeh I would say it would be ur asthma, but make sure u check in with ur doc just to be safe, I had a lot of pain in my gut but once I started walking it was only my port site that was sore and is still uncomfortable even now (I think that can't take several weeks to feel normal again) It was funny for me up until day 4 I wasn't drinking anything other than juice and Water and day 4 I had my first Protein shake, then day 5 I was hungry so had some fat free tomato Soup then by day 8 I was starving so spoke to my clinics dietician about moving into the pureed phase early and tonight was my first problem night although It was the first night I rememberd not to drink while eating and I only got through half a cup if dinner so yeh the hunger kind of came on from me out of no where really but I had read things about it being a sign u are healing and to talk to ur dr about moving into the next post op diet stage I have done pretty well with my weight so far and have Ben doing a lot of wAlking I am glad I went through with it all
  20. I was okay during my hospital stay, but once I got home, I don't know exactly what happened. I knew I needed to drink, but I just couldn't do it. As a result, in my first month I ended up in the hospital three times on IV fluids due to severe dehydration. I also got several serious kidney and bladder infections as well. I know it is tough, but just try to constantly sip, sip, sip. I don't want to see anyone go through what I did, you will feel lousy and it will really slow your recovery. I know it probably doesn't make you happy, but I am glad your doctor is keeping you until he/she is confident that you are going to get in the fluids you need. Take care and please keep us posted on how you are doing.
  21. Well I'm on the 2nd week of post-op almost 3rd, which is a full liquid diet, and I have no Fluid in my band yet. For Breakfast I have a cup of oatmeal or cream of wheat then for my snack I'll have my Protein shake, lunch maybe a half a cup of yogurt and a half a cup of sf pudding then my Protein Shake for snack, dinner some cream of something Soup about a cup, then my protein shake before bed. I forgot I have a protein shake before breakfast. I have to fit in 4 Protein shakes to get in all my protein for the day. I'm up real early, so I can fit it all in. ~~~Stephanie

New to the boards - Questions

Hi there, Make no mistake - the lap band is major surgery with everything that entails. One of the first things my surgeon warned me about is the risk that he may need to convert from laproscopic to open surgery. This could be for all kinds of reasons. My surgeon has done over 200 lap-bands and so far has never had to convert, but still, it is a risk. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't be wanting to have my abdomen opened up in a Doctor's office. Also, as someone who is overweight there is a higher risk that you may develop complications from the anaesthetic and as Alexandra says, again, you want the full service that a hospital can provide in terms of crash equipment. I am full of admiration that Alexandra went home so quickly. There's no way I could have done that. I was glad of the two nights in hospital. I was worried about blood clots (another high risk of being overweight) and was given Flotron massage treatment for 36 hours, as well as anti-clot injections and help getting the TED socks on and off. I live alone and there is no way I could have come home sooner. I don't mean to alarm you. The mortality rate for this surgery is very low. So far I don't regret having the op for a moment. But I thought long and hard about it before I went ahead. 4 months of yes one minute, no the next until I finally decided. I am now 3 and half weeks post-op and haven't had any complications. I feel great, down 12lbs (although most of that was in the week post op). Am REALLY looking forward to getting onto solid food on Friday!!! I've also been cycling for the last three days to and from work and a lovely day on Sunday all the way to church on the other side of Hyde Park (London) and back again. Don't rush into a decision. Keep reading this board and all the other literature you'll get from your doctor. Good luck and happy thinking !!!!!

    Calorie Question

If you're losing more than 2-3 lbs a week, you're probably losing muscle and you don't wan't that. You'll have weeks when you lose 6 lbs and weeks when you lose nothing, but your average shouldn't be more than 2-3 lbs a week. I raise or lower my caloric intake to keep my weight loss at about 3lbs a week, and I work fairly hard to keep it at that level.
  24. I had my sleeve on Oct 5th, I lost 11 pounds during my 2 week pre-op diet and another 10 pounds the first 8 days after surgery. I have since gained back 4 pounds of the weight lost and I am not sure why. I am eating the smushy/blended foods but have to eat about an ounce or so every hour or hour and a half to get the 50 grams of Protein in. I am basicly eating the same foods I eat and lost the 11 pounds pre-op but have gained 4 pounds eating them. I am open to any and all suggestions.
