On a side note I had the bypass but if I did not have a large amount of weight to lose as a different personality lol I would have def not had something with malabsorption, I would keep my body as close to normally functioning as possible and that's just my personal opinion and beliefs.

Low BMR after bariatric surgery
New&Improved replied to over65's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not sure what BMR Is exactly but after BYPASS my weight came off quickly and easily -
I was turned onto this site by a friend considering banding. I had my band placed june 2010, and have had little to no result with it. I dropped pre-op weight however after being able to eat again gained it all back. I have had no problems with vomiting, things getting stuck and have had 5 fills in 2 years. My Dr. Told me that simply the band does not work for some people and suggested that I consider conversion surgery where they remove the band and perform bypass. Has anyone else had this kind if problem with the band? I exercise about 3 times a week and never feel full off 1cup of food. I make sure i am drinking plenty of water and eating enough protein as well. Lately I find my sf seriously considering the surgery but i don't want to find my self in a similar position again after spending thousands more and putting my body through another surgery!! Help, suggestions are greatly appreciated! Melody

My suspicion about pre-op diets and surgeons
OnTheFenceMomma replied to crosswind's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not a person to take risks and all I'm saying is, really; for me, going to Mexico is too risky. And expensive, out of pocket which is not an option for me right now. I'm half Hispanic/native American, I'm afraid they wouldn't let me leave. LOL And I'd get picked on for not speaking spanish. (no, i'm not illegal) But anyways, I was just stating an opinion. There's so many loops that we have to get thru for the insurance and surgeon and I don't mind them because I know I'll be ready. For example, Kaiser requires a full psych evaluation and group/individual sessions. I like that. Being able to vent to a psych who specializes in bariatric patients and has probably seen it all, is very comforting to me. CUZ I'm scared! I want to do it but I'm so scared about the surgical complications, not being able to stay away from my old eating habits, or gaining it back. There's a whole team I'm accountable to; dieticion, nutritionist, a nurse who calls me periodically to check in, the pshychologist and the surgeon. I was born with no thyroid so having this team, for me, is what I feel I need. I'm sure it's not everyone's preference. I was dead set against this surgery til a few months ago. Actually, I was set against the gastric bypass but then they told me about the sleeve and I jumped on board. I've watched so many youtube videos of people who have had the courage to do this and they inspired me. As for the money, I know they all make a mint, here and all over the world. -
Hi, Has anyone heard of doctors doing a lapband on anyone who has had a gastric bypass? I came across an ad for it in Mexico. I was thinking it would be kinda hard because of not much stomach left. I have a band-3 weeks into it. But i have an aunt and cousin who have had a bypass and I'm curious! Any info out there?? Thanks, Laurie

regrets about lapband choice?
WASaBubbleButt replied to pixierainbow's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
But what you are not discussing here is that the hormones that you don't seem to understand is called Ghrelin. When the human body begins to burn fat more Ghrelin is produced. Obese people already produce 3x as much Ghrelin as people who do not have weight problems. Add even MORE Ghrelin to the mix due to burning fat and it is quite a significant difference and the is probably one of the reasons sleeved people lose more weight and faster, we got rid of the over production of Ghrelin. The "receptors" that you are referring to that tell people they are full is the vegus nerve and I have news for you, feeling "full" with a band is completely different for most people than pre-banding. What you experience now when you feel full will likely change after you are banded. There is a valve at the bottom of your stomach that controls how fast food leaves your stomach. With the band they are trying to do what that valve does naturally but higher up in the stomach. Restriction is restriction, you don't really need to work with the band differently "in regard to restriction" than you do any other procedure. Bands and bypass use a stoma, sleeves and DS use their natually made pyloris valve. -
regrets about lapband choice?
Nanook replied to pixierainbow's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had the lap band because I was basically afraid of the bypass but after 14 months had it removed as it never worked for me and I developed reflux. I've just had my RNY surgery and was more prepared this time around and am finally losing weight! I am a 49 year old peremenopausal woman with diabetes II, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and on antidepressants so it was not easy for me to lose with the lap band. Good luck with your decision as I know it's not always an easy one. -
Any other BAND on bypass patients?
daisies76 replied to Deleted Account 2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Ladies, I am getting my band over bypass done on May 10th. Everyone that I had talked to has had amazing results, at or below their goal, so I am hopeful. I had my gastric bypass done in 2003, so I am almost 10 years out. Ive gained about 1/2 back. My goal now is to lose about 50 lbs. Are you guys happy you did it? I will be a self pay and Im hoping its the right decision. How was your recovery? How long before you went back to work? I have a desk job, pretty sedetary. -
Dr Aceves credentials
sleevesearch replied to Oregondaisy's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Maybe I'm looking at the wrong website, but Dr Aceves website doesn't discuss anything about the sleeve procedure, only bypass and lapband. Does anyone have a link to this information, specifically from Dr. Aceves? Also what sort of after care do you need when you come home? Can your primary doc do this? Or do you have to find someone specific? -
I found the band removal fairly easy. Physically, other than mild pain and a miserably achy port-site, I felt really good within a week and was back at work 5 days post-op. my energy level was awesome because I could actually eat real food for the first time in forever . Emotionally I was a mess though. I was supposed to be a revision to RNY BUT WOKE UP WITH ONLY A BAND REMOVAL. I HAD SO MUCH SCARRING AND INFLAMMATION FROM MY BAND THAT THE SURGEON WAS. ABLE TO DO THE REVISION AT THAT TIME...that was hard . No clue why that's all caps but too last to retype it sorry!!! And good luck!!!!

Thank you Christie! It's good to hear your experience in terms of minimal pain and when you could go back to work. I was figuring taking a week off. Hopefully that is enough. Im so sorry to hear you were not able to revise at the same time. Have you healed enough to do that, now? I will not revise to anything else. I want my old clunker back! I have learned so much thru this whole process and ordeal. I learned to not be afraid to be hungry! I've learned a lot about nutrition and about how my own body responds. I've also learned I am fully capable of independence and I don't have to swallow whatever a doctor says hook, line, an sinker. I've had to fight to be heard about these symptoms and persevere no matter what. So, that feels good too. Im sorry you woke up from your surgery with such disappointment. Can you feel your body healing itself? I am worried that my stomach will never be the same and I want to be very gentle with it so that it will heal. Thank you for sharing your personal experience with me. I am very grateful. Take good care! ~hiddn

@@GSleeve822 I had bypass 18 months ago so I don't know if this is different for sleeve patients. Within a few weeks I could drink Water and by drinking I don't mean gulping. I can now drink a 16 oz. bottle in a few minutes but I had to learn not to gulp because even now that air in my tummy can be painful. I try to avoid getting a burp stuck. That makes me feel very uncomfortable. But yes, you will be able to drink water like a normal person.

Anyone else having a hard time getting pain meds?
Gumpgal replied to Gumpgal's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm glad they will have the medication in for you tomorrow. I had a revision from lap band to gastric bypass. My initial pain while in the hospital was more than with the lap band but nothing that wasn't managed by the pain meds. I was able to walk around sooner after the bypass that with the lap band. Walking as much as tolerated also helped with decreasing gas pains. I didn't wait until the pain became intolerable before taking the medicine and I took Tylenol sometimes so I didn't have to take the controlled pain med. It's normal to feel a bit anxious because it's surgery but RNY is so worth it. I'm 9 months out and down about 105 pounds and 20 pounds from my goal. I'm just telling you that because the surgery works. You will be fine, don't over think it! ???? Thanks @@Trayjay33! Surgery is next Tuesday. I am trying to focus on the end game. Taking one anxious moment at a time and trying to work through it ???? -
Well, yesterday I turned 50& today I started the pre op diet. My surgery date is 10/24 and I must say that i'm optimistic. I'm a revision patient, originally fitted with an unsuccessful Lap band. The band resulted in four additional corrective surgeries. I ended up in the ER where the band had to be removed. My ER surgeon is now my bariactric Dr & one of the best in this field. Lucky me!! I'm optimistic because this time I have a great Dr and i'm much wiser. I've scheduled counseling to deal with all of my "stuff", I plan to start learning yoga, and finally, I'm working on a nutrition overhual. I'm going to attack obesity from all levels. If anyone can lend insight to the counseling, yoga, & nutrition please chime in because i'm open to receive!

Anyone Eating & Drinking At The Same Time?
lizv123 replied to NJSleeveboy's topic in Food and Nutrition
Any Bariatric surgery (except the band) can cause dumping. The risk of dumping severity and longevity increases with the bypass. In my support group we have 4-5 Sleevers that have dumping. -

Thank you and good luck to you as well. I wanted the band, but my surgeon detoured me to gastric bypass surgery instead. Sent from my ANDROID using RNYTalk -
Hey Barbie, My name is Jacee and I'm 23, female and living in Australia. I go in for my RNY bypass on the 25th of May. I originally had Lapband surgery, and was very successful until my band slipped. I can't wait to start my new journey Best of luck!

4th WLS procedure coming up this week!!! No judgement!
sydneyjonno replied to sydneyjonno's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Just found out you can keep on Overstitching!! So I went for my follow up with my surgeon after having the Overstitch a few weeks ago and starting on the Saxenda. Weight continues to drop slowly, couple of pounds a week. Weight it really difficult to get off now as I am almost at my goal. Anyway, surgeon told me that if the Overstitched pouch / stoma stretches out again, it is easily re-overstitched!! Now I am certainly not planning to ever have another Overstitch, I am happy with my weight loss and am sticking to the rules. However, good to know that the Overstitch isn't technically the end of the road or the last possible surgery for bypass patients before potentially considering DS. Just thought I'd share that with everyone as it was news to me :-) -
4th WLS procedure coming up this week!!! No judgement!
sydneyjonno posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well I never though I'd say this.........but I'm actually going in for my 4th WLS surgery / procedure this week [emoji15], I'm 3 days away from it on the 21st of July 2017 [emoji106][emoji4] My weight loss journey so far....back in 2004 I weighed 136kg / 300 pounds and am 182cm / 6ft. My GP in the UK wouldn't approve SAGB on the NHS so I self funded the operation at a hospital in the South of France. Operation went well, weight loss was good, got down to 90kg / 198 pounds. However, gradually I had more and more complications with the band, slippage and erosion. Weight went up to 116kg / 255 pounds. No matter how much fluids were put in or removed from my band, my restriction was either that tight I couldn't get water down or too loose so I could eat whatever I liked. I also developed reflux and experienced frequent vomiting. I had a revision from band to sleeve in the same operation in Australia 3 years ago (2014) got down to 84kg / 144 pounds with the sleeve. My sleeve stretched over a couple of years, partly due to the poor shape of the sleeve due to the damage done by the band (after my operation my surgeon said to me that my stomach was in such bad condition it looked looked "like a dogs breakfast in there!!") and if I'm honest partly due to me falling off the wagon, eating too much junk food and drinking a serious amount of alcohol, so my weight crept back up to 103kg / 227 pound. So anyway I finally stumped up the courage to go for the full gastric bypass 1 year ago at a weight of 103kg / 227 pound. Weight loss was great, felt full quickly, no major dumping, no complications / side effects. Got down to 80kg / 176 pound then recently crept back up to 93kg / 205 pound, so now I'm having the Overstitch this week, which I hope will be my final weight loss operation ever this Friday! In hindsight I wish I'd never had the band and sleeve and gone straight for the bypass all those years ago, but still grateful for the overall weight loss to date. I must have been quite lucky with the operations, I had no infections, significant pain or gas pain, I was waking around the ward on day of the bypass, got 1.5ltr of fluids down me same day and after the TT I was doing laps of the ward on day 2! Only real issue is I've become severely anaemic this week. I'm on iron tablets and Vit B12 injects. Now when I was in the mid-80kgs I had a fair bit of excess skin and I think the weight loss and the natural getting older process had made me look older than my years, so I went in for some plastic surgery to get my self sorted out. I had upper and lower blepharoplasty (reduction of loose skin above and below my eyes, liposuction to my neck, 2 separate neck lifts (first one unsatisfactory), liposuction to remaining man boobs, stomach, hips and back. Full abdominoplasty with new belly button. Oh and a complimentary mid-face lift whilst the surgeon was in doing my lower eyes, I actually didn't ask for the mid face lift but my surgeon couldn't resist doing it once he had perfect access to the areas / structures required to hitch up the face a little. I woke up to the unexpected news about the face lift and was thrilled with the results and even happier that is was for free!! I also had a fat transfer, where they sucked some fat out of my abdominal area and had it pumped in the jowls / cheeks / nasolabial folds to fill out my face a little!!! Now I just have a little Botox and some dermal fillers as maintenance to the face. Also had a vampire facelift lol. And OMG for those of you who have had full tummy tucks, as in skin and muscles, jeez how painful is the recovery from that bad boy!! Worst of all the WLS surgeries I've had and the other cosmetic procedure. You can't sit up, you can't laugh, sneeze, burp, fart, go for number 2's, well that was my experience with the TT recovery although I recovered very well form all of the procedures with no issues at all, thank-fully [emoji106] The Tummy Tuck for me is what makes me want to stay at around 80kg, any heavier and I feel the skin on my belly stretching because of the tightened skin. I gets quite uncomfortable so I have to get it oI don't want to ruin the effects of the surgery. All in all the procedure took 3 seperate operations they were 11 hours, 5 hours and 9 hours in duration. After the 11 hour operation I ended up in ICU on a cardiac monitor with a special one to one nurse as I was at risk of an adverse cardiac even due to excessive fluid loss. The three cosmetic operations cost me over $70k. Anyway, that's my story in its entirety, I thought I'd share this information with you as I have had so much done and gone through so many procedures, so please feel free to comment and ask me any questions. Thanks John [emoji4][emoji106] PS: No judgement please lol -
Choosing between bypass and sleeve
nrbradley0 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had a follow-up appointment with my bariatric surgeon from my EGD and he said that I have the option between roux-en-Y gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, and lap band. The lap band was a no for me, so I have the option between the other two. What is everyone’s input on each surgery and what made them pick one over the other? Thanks in advance! -
Proximal to Distal Revision... expectations?
Nifer72 replied to Nifer72's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My revision was a bit more... complicated than most. Due to unforseen issues (basically one anastomosis was not done right), the surgery in March had to be aborted after 3hrs. New surgery was scheduled for June to allow for healing. 2nd surgery, the surgeon discovered another surprise. My common channel was only 25cm and the configuration of my intestines was not the rny configuration. He had to back my common channel to 300cm, cut out a portion of my pouch and small intestines due to necrotic tissue. This surgery took 8hrs! So almost 9months post op, I do have better restriction than I did with my surgery 22 years ago, but I'm absorbing more. I'm down 50lbs so it's been slow going, but I'm still losing. Thanks for asking, Hope you are doing well on your journey.
