I'm sure a lot of people struggle with the pre and post-op diets because they are so restrictive. During this time, it was helpful for me to remember that the liquid diet was only temporary. I hated every type of protein shake I tried, and I haven't had another shake since a few months after surgery. The liquid protein diet is no fun, but just remember that you have to do it for a few weeks only, and then you will be able to eat many different types of foods again. People have various food intolerances, but honestly, there isn't anything I physically can't eat, even with 8cc's. There probably won't be many foods that you absolutely cannot get down after surgery, so there's no need to feel anxious about completely giving up food. The liquid protein diet is in no way representative of the diet you will be following after you have healed. Good luck with your pre-op diet and with your surgery.

I'm eating soft solid food in my 3rd week. I didn't have to stay on a liquid diet. Your surgeon has given you the ok to move on to solid foods. He wouldn't tell you to eat them if it wasn't safe. Don't worry. Just make sure you chew and eat slowly. You should already feel full with less food.

Some hair lose is normal with rapid weight loss, the key to slowing it down is to make sure you take in enough protein, during the early months while learning to eat this is difficult so I would suggest you add some protein shakes maybe twice a day to your daily intake. Also you can goggle this because this is what I did. Goggle: hair loss after weight loss surgery, they say the lose should not be as much with lap band but it does happen. The recommended vitamin for hair and nails is Biotin. I take a chew-able one from GNC and I take 2 of them a day. After a couple of weeks of starting this I noticed a reduction in the amount of hair I was losing and I also was losing hair rapidly. Talk to your physician also they may have other suggestions.

@@Victoria Mora don't worry!!! I promise the fill experience is not like getting blood drawn. The Dr. or PA will feel for your port and the initial "pinch" feels like just that a pinch. The needle only pierces the layer of your skin and goes right into the port. The Dr. will use a special kind of needle that is meant to permeate the port and not damage it or you. Once the Dr. access the port it felt a bit to me like a mechanic doing an oil change or something. The Fluid is then pushed into the port through the tubing and eventually to the band. Some doctors are aggressive with their fills and may do up to a 1 cc or more. Some doctors like mine are very conservative with their fills and would only give a .5cc fill each time. It can take up to a week to two weeks for the fill to fully settle into the band, so don't be shocked if you don't feel any changes right away. If that amount of time passes and you are still able to overeat, or you are eating sooner than 3 hours between meals then you will probably need another fill. there is no way to measure what fill level will work for each person. Everyone is different. There are some who just having the band is enough and they never need a fill and then there are some that are mostly filled to the highest level of the bands and find that to be their sweet spot. The average I feel of most people seems to be between 5-6 cc's in a 10 cc band. More than likely your Dr. will ask you to be on liquids for a day or more and then slowly move back to solid foods, this is to allow the stomach to ease into the fill and not be overly stressed out by the increased pressure in the band and the pressure of foods coming through. Let your Dr. know when you go in your a bit fearful of the needle so they have a little more patients with you, lean back and close your eyes and you will be done before you know it.

My experience has been that eating out causes more problems than eating at home. Once you achieve good restriction, there will be days when almost nothing goes down and you end up in the ladies' room three times during one meal. That may be difficult to explain.

The Day Before My First Meeting With Dr. Malley
LovelyOne posted a blog entry in LovelyOne's Journal
I'm eatin today LOL. Jeff fixed chicken fried steak, cream gravy, hashbrowned potatoes, and three eggs. Lunch, leftover hashbrowned potatoes. Snack, baked ziti. I'm nervous about tomorrow. I saw something on a website that says the average person only loses 47% of their weight with the surgery but that would be 150 pounds roughly and that seems like a darn good start. Hopefully things will go good tomorrow. My appointment is at 3:45. :clap2: I remember Optifast. I remember hairloss. I just want health now. I was diagnosed Friday with Type II Diabetes and I don't see Dr. Joslin for that until Wednesday. Today is Sunday, Mother's Day. I haven't called Mom yet but between what I can't tell her, Diabetes and Surgery, not much to say right now except thanks for being my mom. That's enough I think -
I get extremely swollen after a fill and have some of the symptoms you talk about. First of all, drink sips of Water...sip sip sip. Then, have warm cream soups- My doctor said that the cream is heavier than water so gravity helps it past the ticked off esophogus and stoma...and third- don't drink juice!!!!!! I can't drink juice AT ALL without burning my stoma.... After every fill I have to go on liquids for at least three days...then I start back on solid foods very very slowly. As for the gas- one night I had a dream that my band was blowing up ...I woke up and had such gas stuck I could hardly breath. I took some gas ex and walked around for an hour until I burped it all out (pleasant, I know!). Gas Ex has become a new friend to me... My doctor told me to give it a week- as long as I could drink water and creamed Soups I'd be ok. So, all this is not to say that you should not talk to you doctor and/or nurse if you need to...keep calling back until they will talk to you if you have to! Best of luck, and hang in there... Megan

Kristin, not drinking a little something with a meal kinda scares me. How long did it take for you to get used to not drinking with meals? I get banded next week.

Hi folks! I'm doing a program called Couch to 5K which trains you to be able to run a 5k at the end of 8 weeks. I'm week 4, and can't believe that I can run a whole 5 min stretch! Never been able to before ever! However, I am noticing that my port area is tender after these runs. Am I doing damage, or am I stretching the muscles, or what? Any ideas? I am 4 months post op. I will ask my doc about it at my next appt in a week.

That's great news! Congratulations and best of luck. A couple of things I thought of real quick. I'm sure others will have some good suggestions as well. - Get your Protein drinks (I personally like Pure Nutrition Protein from costco....but I drank Boost initially for the variety). Others like unjury. Try a few before your surgery so you can pick the ones that you like best - Different broths and Soups - Crystal light - sugar free Jello Gelatin - Sugar Free popsicles This will help you through the initial days of recovery until you are well enough to do some shopping for mushies. The largest variety of each of these items that you can get the better. You are stuck on a boring liquid diet for a week or two, so variety will make it a little more interesting.

Well it's finally here! I got the call today to tell me that I'm scheduled for surgery at 12:30 tomorrow. I've lost 12 pounds on my two weeks of shakes! And of course tonight I'm starving to death! I'm drinking herbal tea and trying to trick myself but its not working. I'm nervous about tomorrow but excited in the right.

I am afraid my surgery is going to be postponed
Oregondaisy replied to Oregondaisy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I talked to the hospital this morning and they are probably going to put him in a nursing home where he can get physical therapy. If they do that, I may just run off and get my surgery as soon as my money gets here, which will be next week. At least I would know he's in a safe place being taken care of, while I was there. -
Stephanie - you are in the most difficult part of the journey. The only way I can describe that part (for me), was a roller coaster ride, unlike any other. But I have to tell you.....now 11 weeks out, and back to most foods, it totally changes. No, the weight doesn't fall off (yeah, I wish it would, too), but it's coming off consistently, and now I look back on the last 11 weeks, and I'm 26 pounds lighter. Would this have happened without the band? NO - it wouldn't have! When the negative ego rears its ugly face, try & remove yourself from it; listen to its unreasonable voice, but stay neutral. You can't really stop it from talking to you.....it's been with you forEVER. The "real you" knows what's best for Stephanie, and that is the voice that needs to intervene between all "head conversations". I refer to these as "the committee". The real you is the one in control. I love the analogy of the baseball game! Hold on to that..... THAT Stephanie is the captain of the ship. You can and you WILL do this!! It was a good decision, and I believe that you will know that clearly in the weeks to come :-)

I had surgery on Jan 28 and lost 12 lbs post surgery from 296 to 284. I have lost no more weight. I have had my port flip and before they figured that out I went through 4 "B horror movie" fills one lasting 45 minutes while they stabbed at my tummy in seach of the port. I finally got my first real fill when they did the surgery to flip the port. 1cc and I just got a 1/2 again last week. I feel no change and am so disappointed. My surgery center and doctor have NO support what so ever on this process. Should I worry or should I get another fill? What is an average fill amount? I hate to sound so blue but it has become a nightmare. Thanks for listening.

banded 21st june 2014 - please let me know your story so far

I had pretty bad gas pains for about 9 days...and was most swollen throat wise on days 4 & 5. Have your meds and a heating pad ready...and walk every hour. The liquid phase is the worst, because I ended up getting my hunger back towards day 6..once I was on mushies, my energy came back and I felt less like a zombie. Now, I feel fine..still a little tender 2 weeks out, but feeling energetic! -
Congratulations! I'm definitely nowhere there yet, but my mini milestone this week was for the first time in our entire relationship, my stomach is smaller than my husband's! I got very excited when I noticed it.

Marimaru......sounds like you are doing the right thing, the safe thing for your body. I had a complete unfill last summer before I had PS.....and I still felt like I had restriction for about 3-4 weeks - that was a relief!! I could see myself gaining 20 pounds while my 'fat apron' removal was healing. But it didn't happen. I think the key may be in avoiding the white carbs.....they cause your blood sugar to bounce and make you think you're hungry when you really are not. You won't feel deprived and you'll be able to control your eating and staying on track. Be sure and track your food intake on something like fitday and keep your Protein count high to keep your metabolism going at full speed. I, too, have a slipped band and am going thru the 4 wks of liquids til we can figure out what to do. We can do this!! It's too important to not be successful in getting thru this bump in the road. Hugs, Gayle

I'm driving across country next week for a week long vacation. Starting to lose weight again, but I'm worrried that since I won't be cooking my own meals that I'll over do it in the calorie department. I'm planning on packing a cooler with healthy snacks and water, but once I'm there...we'll be eating out every day. Any suggestions?

What Are Your Thanksgiving Plans?

I will be eating. I'm praying this will be my last meal before I go on the pre-op diet. I have my last appointments next week!! So excited!!!! -
I work out a a YMCA. I am currently doing cardio 7 days a week. I do 65 minutes on an eliptical trainer, I usually end up with about a 900 calorie burn. I would like to incorporate a weight regiment into my workout....But where to start. The YMCA people seem to have no clue, I haven't even been able to get the fitness assessment out of them that they promised when I joined up. How did you guys and gals find a PT that you can work with? How much is the going rate for such a service? How often does your PT actually work with you? I also have a non sleeve friend that is looking to shape up, is it out of the ordinary to find a trainer for both of us (and maybe even our teenage boys) all in the same workout / trainer ?

I started with my personal trainer at 6 weeks post op. I lucked out finding her by going through the phone book & calling different places. My personal trainer has been in the biz for about 30 years, PLUS she also has her Master's in nutrition. Because I had my surgery in Mexico, that was important to me. She is a store-front operation with a simple layout (recumbent bike, elliptical, spinning bikes, cable machine, bands & LOTS of free weights). Once a month she weighs & measures my progress. I know that she is there waiting for me, which holds me accountable, yet if something comes up, there is no recriminations for cancelling that session. I thought I would just stay with her for a few months, but it's been almost 11 months - I'm down 135# and have lost over 55". Although I do have some sagging skin, it is so much better than people I know who have not worked out consistently. I may not need plastics when I am at goal!! If that's the case - my personal trainer will be the best money I have ever spent!!

You need weight training. Cardio is not enough especially when you lose weight as quickly as we do. If you are not familiar with weight machines or free weights, I would suggest a Personal Trainer. You will use the knowledge for the rest of your life. Group training is less expensive than personal training. It could cost 40 per session or cheaper in group. There are deals now because it is not the busy season yet. Look up pt training in your area online. Make sure they have the credentials. If you really want a deal, go to a local gym, get a free day pass and watch some personal trainers in action. Go approach them and talk to them. They might be independent but you have to get in the gym to talk to them. If you go to YMCA, then get a free week pass somewhere. I had personal training for a couple of months and thats all I needed to get the weight training education. Now I do it on my own. I think its a great idea for you to do it in a group!!!

I'm 9 weeks out, had great restriction after surgery. I started on solid foods 4 weeks out, as per Drs orders. I've had the "suck" feeling on several occasions, but mostly that has been from medications, and only a few times from food. I've yet to have a PB, but I've had the excessive salivation thing -- usually more than an hour after I've eaten. Good luck on your research!

I've been taking the Citracal petites since I was 3 weeks out..

Hey. I'm exactly the same, I've had my band since last November, so around 7 months. I've lost around 10 or 11 kgs, and am completely discouraged, It's been so much harder for me than I thought it would be. I know the big thing for me is that I'm not eating properly, I don't eat for my full 20 minutes and often skip lunch and snack. I went to see my dietician a week ago and she told me that's probably the reason I'm not losing the weight like I should be!
