  1. Hi, I wanted to see who was having Roux-en-Y gastric bypass this October. It seems like more people in general get VSG, and we RGNY folks are on the fringes. I did a quick search and did not see a topic, so sorry if this is a repeat. I wanted a group just for RGNY because even though a lot of advice is similar there are some nuanced differences. My surgery is on October 27th I start my pre-op diet on Friday the 13th, but I decided to get a bit of a jump start by easing into it today.
  2. I got my surgery date today... November 29th... Gastric Bypass... Now to start planning, getting together everything I need and trying to not stress myself out until then....

    September 2023 Surgery buddies

I had my gastric bypass surgery on 9/26/2023 and was doing ok recovery until this week. I’ve been in unbearable pain and went to the urgent care and unfortunately my longer incision has an infection. The pain is horrible and I knew something was so wrong because the oxycodone was doing nothing for my pain. Really got freaked out when it began draining in its own. It’s been non stop. 😭😭😭. Very stressed and angry that I’m still having issues and can’t get around better.

    November Surgery Buddies 2023

I'd like to give you November people a huge red flag heads up warning. Please discuss with your surgeon (do not let them blow the question off, because they'll try to!) Everything went excellent for me (surgery September 20) except recovery room wake up. I was in outrageous pain and the nurses didn't care. I was experiencing nausea, pain in the front side of both shoulders, and overall abdominal pain. I couldn't help but loudly vocalize, "Owww, owww, owww!" All the nurses would do was say, "don't worry, it's just gas." And they handed me a barf bag. What I wanted them to do was empathize and give me some drugs to get me out of pain. But it took about 30 min of torture before someone finally did that. I was outraged at their lack of care. At 2-week follow up with my surgeon's nurse, I told her about it and she shared, "I'll discuss this with Dr. Reddy because you're the second person today with that same story. That's awful. Something needs to be done." This was at Sutter Roseville Hospital, Roseville CA. The recovery room is for all surgeries, not just gastro. But I felt like my well-being was totally violated, and I just want to tell all of you to please, please discuss your recovery room expectations beforehand with your surgeon. Aside from that half hour of hell, my recovery has been flawless. Not one minute of pain or nausea. Didn't take any narcotics after hospital release the following morning. Just Tylenol, and was fine. No nausea meds needed either. The one thing that is concerning me a bit is how un-energetic I am. I think it's because I'm still recovering and will improve rapidly when I am eating the final phase of foods, which actually began today. Good luck to all of you.
  6. Hey, y'all, it's been a while. Back in May, one month before I had my revision from sleeve to bypass, I began using the Premier Protein shakes for my pre-op diet and taking bariatric vitamins (including a multivitamin, calcium, iron, and biotin). It started with a tiny, itchy hive on one side of my neck about the size of my thumbnail. It would go away, though, and I'd forget all about it. As the days went by, I would begin to get the itchies again. I noticed I'd get the hives on the other side of my neck now too. At this point, it looks like a ring around my neck. I read about the Premier Protein shakes being recalled, but that was a while ago. I spoke to my sister who's been an RN for 40+ years, and she thinks it's more likely to be the biotin rather than the shakes. I stopped taking both 2 days ago. The itchies have stopped, but I'm left with textured skin where the hives were. It almost looks like a healing burn. It's weird. I know I need to see a dermatologist about it, I just have to find one that will see me after work. I can't miss any more work. I'm wondering if any of you have had a similar situation with allergic reactions to either shakes or vitamins. I'd appreciate any information or knowledge that you have. TIA.

    Total regret

You can reverse it if that is what is causing it. Most who had bypass do not have that issue so if you haven't already, I would get a check up to find out what is the problem. Often, many symptoms have nothing to do with the surgery.
  8. I feel you. I’m scared to do the bypass. I was doing really well and also working with a therapist. Then things got really stressful for me and I fell into depression. I only gave 40 lbs to lose but I got injured almost a year ago and I’m still not able to exercise so I just keep gaining. I’m vegan now but u eat way too many starches. I wonder if esg cuts hunger. That’s what I want.

    Smoking

It seems like a lot of surgeons require you to be nicotine-free at the start of the program and commit to remaining so for life. I know mine does. If I were to be found with nicotine in my system at any part, the process would stop, and I would have to start over from the beginning after I quit. I know the risk of ulcers in your stomach, particularly with gastric bypass, is really high if you smoke, and there is something like a 20 times higher risk of having complications from the anesthesia, which is why they're so strict on it.
  10. Last pounds are difficult and the maintenance isn't really better, if not worse. It is a constant grind and long battle to maintain and not gain 5 lbs that can lead to 20, 30... etc. This is our reality, no matter whether it's the band, the sleeve, the bypass and any of the revisions... And it bites. I was thinking the other day that after all this time, I just want to eat everything I want for a week lol but then, I know if I go that route, I'm feeding my emotions not my body and it would be near impossible to take it off again like in my honeymoon stage. So I put that out of my head since being thin is a priority. So big Hugs, hang in there, you have come such a long way. We have all come a long way. Let us count the blessings that we made it this far and we have major improvements in our lives. [emoji3059]

    Total regret

I feel for the rough time you are having. Theoretically It is possible to reverse your Gastric Bypass. It may or may not completely resolve your issues, and it may create new issues. Talk to a surgeon. My surgeon likened it to destroying a house then rebuilding it with the rubble. You may be able to accomplish the task but it won't be the same house. Have your issues been consistent from the start or have they started more recently? I'm assuming you've seen your medical team and worked over the years to deal with your issues, what interventions have been tried? What has your medical team said? I know for me, if I have other medical issues eating is something I simply can't accomplish, which makes every medical situation worse. Good luck, Tek
  12. I had gastric bypass 15 years ago and I regret it with every fiber of my being!! I have gotten to the point to where I can not hold down any food whatsoever and shakes like boots or iffy. Is there a way to reverse this horrific mistake?

    Post Op Coffee

when did you start drinking coffee after your surgery. im one month out of gastric bypass and craving my morning coffee
  14. So I just had open bladder surgery(not bypass related or caused) and had to stay in the hospital post opp...I was SO scared when they went to move me from my strecher to my room bed but it was EASY! I had m my bypass surgery 6/22 and I'm 130lbs down. Aside from the post op pneumonia everything about this surgery has been easier, walking, moving, standing, showing and I have a 3+ inch incision going from my belly button down, 15+staples and 7 stitches on my bladder on the inside. It's one of the biggest Surgeries I've ever had and pneumonia aside pretty easy recovery so far.
  15. No, the SASI slims the excess of the stomach from the sleeve and meets the upper and lower intestines. I was quoted $18,900 for that at IBI Healthcare in Buckhead in Atlanta. The bypass is $14k. I think I’m going to go with the Bypass. My goal is to really stop eating bread and cheese. I am almost a vegan as I’ve cut out every meat, and all sugars. I want this tool to trigger dumping so I can really stop. My weight gain recently is due to starch and stress. And, I also stopped going to my therapist and my nutritionist. I’m restarting my therapy right now. Unfortunately, I’m back at my starting weight from back in 2017 which is 240. So, I’m a bit defeated by the recent weight gain. I’m hoping to start again with the process this week or next week. Since my goal is to lose 90 lbs, I don’t think the ESG would work for me.
  16. I can’t believe it’s been over a year since I STILL HAVENT made a decision. I have the money to do the surgery, but now I have added 2 additional surgery options. Now, I can’t decide between 1. Bypass 2. ESG 3. GSRE - gastric sleeve revision surgery 4. SASI - single anstanomis ilietal surgery. I know I’m spelling it wrong. This one is supposed to make you lose 60+ lbs and is one stitch.

Try not to get discouraged....Some of us are just slow losers!!!! I'm 4 weeks post-op (9/7/20 Bypass) and have only lost 14 pounds. I'm doing all the things I'm supposed to be doing! Take your measurements! In four weeks I'm only down the 14 pounds....but I'm down 23.34 inches! I've learned to not compare my journey to others and to not let the scale define me! Just keep following what your Dr/Nutritionist's program and it will happen.

Already discouraged. I had bypass on 9/26/23 and even after 10 days of nothing but fluids and now on pureed and barely eating a teaspoon of each food allowed (LF cottage cheese, LF no sugar added yogurt, mashed potatoes) 3x/day and getting through my 4oz protein shake 3x day... I've only lost 7 pounds. I feel like I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what. Annoyed, and disappointed in myself.
  19. I'm so excited, I got my surgery date today and we finalized all the details of the surgery!!! I'll be doing the duodenal switch with a longer common channel since I have a history of vitamin D deficiency and anemia. The surgeon talked to my GI specialist and they signed off of on it so everyone is on board thankfully. We picked December 13th, since I'll be in New Zealand for most of November. He said 2 weeks is standard for their liver reduction diet but if I added in a gradual 3rd week it would probably help as a bonus week. Their liver reduction diet is 2 shakes, 2 snacks and a lean, green dinner until one week before surgery, when it switches to all fluids. So basically I'll be starting the diet as soon as we get back from traveling... I already have 7 flavors of premier protein shakes in my closet. LOL (They require the shakes be either those or the bariatric advantage powder as per some study they are following). I'm really happy to be at this stage of everything, I know the 2 months will fly by fast!

  22. How exciting! I had a fundolipcation years ago & after ten years it was discovered that it had failed at some point. And that my esophagus was L shaped & 1/2 of my stomach was above my diaphragm! I had a bypass to fix all of that and lost over 60 pounds. I feel so much better now! Good luck & God’s blessings on you tomorrow!

    Sleeve Revision to Bypass

I haven't had that revision, but a lot of people have - mostly because of reflux. I had reflux before I had surgery, so I went with bypass the first time.
  25. PS - I just did a quick google search on this. This is NOT a scholarly article, so there's that - but it does mention that bile reflux (as opposed to acid reflux) can occur in about 5% of mini-bypass patients. It goes on to say they see it more in sleeve to mini-bypass revision patients than they do with non-revisions. Again, I don't know what kind of research is behind this because this isn't a scholarly article - they may just be basing this on their specific patients. But again, let your clinic know what's going on. Hopefully it's just some kind of flare-up. https://mexicobariatriccenter.com/bile-reflux-after-mini-gastric-bypass-surgery/
