Changing Habits Prior to Surgery
JRT Mom replied to Lauren87's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Lauren87- This is a great post! I am just like you. Got a lap band about 10 years ago and it worked great--until it didn't. Now I have to get it removed and want to revise to a RNY. I've developed a touch of diabetes in the last few months and have tried to give up sugar, which will help with both my diabetes and learning not to eat sweets after the bypass. Sometimes I slide a bit, but after the bypass I imagine a bad dumping will change that! Anyway, good luck with your decision, and visit here often. The peeps are funny, smart, supportive and the best bunch of friends I have NEVER met! -
I am having my pre-op visit in a week and I'm gonna ask the surgeon about what size pouch he likes to make. I've also heard surgeons attach the pouch at different points on the small intestine resulting in more or less of a bypass affecting calorie absorption. Also a good question to ask.

Y'all are scaring me...I'm getting rid of a lap band because of the same issues y'all are having with a bypass? Am I trading one problem for another?

I had bypass, but I had the same problem with water in the first couple of months, particularly with not drinking for 30 minutes before or after eating. All I can say is that it got easier over time and I can now consume about 90 oz per day!

Gastric bypass or sleeve
KateBruin replied to laura071693's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Be careful. There can be some pretty devastating side effects of long term PPI like significant bone loss. I was on them for over 18 months till I switched to bypass. I’m on them for 3 months because I got ulcers 🙄 but I’m hoping they’ll heal. No coffee is killing me! -
Gastric bypass or sleeve
KateBruin replied to laura071693's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I apologize if someone has already responded. Sleeve creates a high pressure system within your stomach, worsening GERD or creating it (me!). Bypass makes your stomach so small it produces little acid. I will say that I’ve had a complication of mini ulcers in my duodenum because it’s never been exposed to acid or there’s something else wrong. Getting a barium CT next week. ZERO regrets going from sleeve to bypass. I’ll take the pain and, quite frankly, pooping myself once over the 24/7, wake up choking on vomit that I had with the sleeve. -
Getting a Revision - but OMG NOT because of weight regain!!!!
GreenTealael replied to summerset's topic in Rants & Raves
**********NECROPOSTING ALERT*********** I TOTALLY MISSED THIS WHOLE THREAD Probably because on 7/15 I was in the hospital being revised from VSG to RNY and NOT FOR REGAIN 😂 I don't know why others post the way they do but, the reason I chose to include that bit of info is because: I didn't want to assume everyone knows my whole story (some people may have just joined that day etc) I wanted to be clear as possible so when some one runs a search for info here on BP they find exactly what they are looking for I wanted to share my specific experience and because the stories/ questions/ support/ techniques/ insurance rules/ *plans/ *preop /*postop may change vastly depending on why you need a revision its not helpful to lump it together. Can you imagine being asked nonstop in DMs if you lost all of your excess weight then having to explain you didnt have any excess weight/ you were at goal already Or never being asked if your stenosis was properly bypassed/GERD resolved/ torsion corrected/anatomy fixed because no one knew that was the reason for the revision. Or telling people that insurance approved it in 48 hrs, but not explaining that it was likely because it was emergent in my case and highly unlikely to get approved that quick or even the first time on a weight regain only case. For me it was about clarity & I hope my input helped 💙 -

CHEWABLE MULTIVITAMINS???
Losingit2018 replied to New&Improved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
FYI I am 18 months out and did check with my surgeon on the turmeric. She said it is absolutely fine to take it post op. She takes turmeric herself so is very familiar with it. I made sure it was safe to take pre op as I am riddled with arthritis and could not get by without it. I know that drs are all different but hope this helps since you were not able to get answers from yours. I have been using opurity chewable sleeve and bypass optimized vitamins from unjury since surgery. They are high quality, taste good and are affordable. -
Help understanding the process of getting a gastric bypass through Molina.
cynthiamajors23@gmail.com posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Can anyone help me get through/ understand the process with Molina Healthcare? I am totally confused & frustrated bc I can not find anyone with the answers I need. I've had the initial form completed and faxed ( back in June,), & have not heard anything yet. I just want to know what I need to do next. -
Seeking Boston surgeon for revision
RickM replied to onmyway11's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
For a "classic" BPD/DS, I'm not aware of any surgeons in the Boston area that do them - the closest would be in the NY/NJ/PA area where there are several good ones to choose from (Roslin, Greenbaum, Pomp, Herron, Bonnani that I can think of). The SIPS is a newer and simpler procedure so more surgeons are capable of doing it, but experience and technique with it is a big variable with those who have started to offer it, so you need to take a good look at how their post-ops are doing. Unfortunately, being a fairly new procedure, there aren't the number of people around who have had it for a few years as there are with the BPD/DS which has been around for some thirty years or so. Good luck in your revision! -
As of now I'm scheduled for a revision from a lap band to RNY on Nov 20. Fingers crossed!
-
My surgery date is November 13th = revision from lap band to gastric sleeve. I start my 2 week pre-op diet tomorrow 😟. 2 protein shakes and lean meat w/non-starchy vegetables.

Seeking Boston surgeon for revision

I am looking for Boston people that love their surgeon. Specifically to do either a DS or a SIPS procedure. It’s ok if you don’t know if they do or not I will call around thanks!! -

Sleeve revision to RNY or Bypass reason
WOLVESFAN1 replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
GERD is horrible. I'm actually aspirating food into my lungs at times. Pills I take will come back whole an hour later. I'm scheduled for revision on 12/17. I had my sleeve over 12 years ago and have kept my weight off. I've lost over a 100 pounds and I currently wear 4/6. I'm actually losing more because nothing is staying down. -
Conversion of Sleeve to Bypass
Puppylvr replied to NCmomof3_fightsback's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had the band first and it eroded into my stomach, so had to have that removed and I gained back my weight plus some. Then I had a gastric bypass in 2012. Pre-surgery weight 321, now 165, low 155 after breastfeeding My youngest of four kids in 2014. The recovery is a lot harder, but well worth it. You have to keep up with your vitamins and protein, but it was the best thing that I could have done. Because if you eat sugar, YOU WILL BE SORRY. And then you just don’t really want it anymore. With the sleeve, you don’t have any of the eversions to sweets and with me I couldn’t drink milk, so no ice cream or yogurt which has a lot of sugar anyway so it helps in lots of ways to FORCE YOURSELF and it’s impossible to cheat unless you want to feel COMPLETELY MISERABLE for a taste of a candy bar. It’s not worth it so you don’t eat it. You will be back to that 167 in no time!! Especially with the three kids to keep you busy. -
Intermittent fasting knocked down the last 15 pounds for me. There are LOTS of threads on IF on this forum. Lots of us have used (or are using) one form or another. It is a powerful tool, not difficult, and actually very healthy for you. I am not sure keto is the way to go, as the fat content is so high. With bypass, we already have fat absorption issues, and I know my intestines are not happy with too much fat. Also, your liver has worked very hard to process all the fat you have already lost. You might have had fatty liver disease, as I did, before surgery. From what I have read, adding more fat for the liver to work on is not a great idea. IF gives you the benefit of ketones, but without the high fat diet.

Changing Habits Prior to Surgery
AZhiker replied to Lauren87's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Absolutely get rid of the junk now! It will make recovery so much easier. You have to knock the sugar. Period. With bypass, you don't want to risk dumping. It takes about 3 days, but once you are off the sugar, the cravings will settle down - unless you take a single bite again. I was already wheat free, but knocked off the sugar, all soda, all processed foods, and caffeine preop. I was soooo glad I did. No withdrawal from any of that crap when I was already dealing with recovery. -
Are you Sleeve to RNY?

Conversion of Sleeve to Bypass
NCmomof3_fightsback posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi:) I had the gastric sleeve is 2012. Great success! I went from 353 to 167. Maintained weight till 2015 when we lost our baby boy. Four months after lose I became pregnant. Our rainbow was born 2016. A week after her turned one, I found out we were expecting again. Brings me to 2019 I have three beautiful kids and I weigh 363lbs On 10/16/19 I had my sleeve converted to gastric bypass. Recovery is definitely rougher than the sleeve but hanging in there. From my pre-op diet and the first two weeks postop I now weigh 334. was just reaching out to see if anyone could share their success stories as I so badly want to be healthy again and lose all this excess weight. thanks so much -
Long story short, I'm a Lap-band patient (2009) that is going to seek revision to gastric bypass in 2020. I'm really excited and hopeful, but also have a good real of anxiety about making this surgery a success and sticking with it longterm. For a whole host of reasons, the Band isn't a good tool for me and that is why I'm seeking a more drastic surgery. While I still have some time before my new insurance policy kicks in, I want to make sure I'm taking the steps now to make post-surgery life more successful. Because this is not my first rodeo, I know to focus on protein intake and water. I know to limit carbs and sugars, etc. However, I'm curious as to how many of you make it stick. I'm someone that craves a lot of sugar, unfortunately, so even if I keep my meals in check, I am easily derailed by crap food. I know what needs to be done... I just can't seem to stick to it... and I feel like I need to have that figured out before surgery. I don't want to go into surgery with these feelings because I know I won't be a good WLS candidate and I certainly won't have the success that I desperately want. Any thoughts or advice are much appreciated!

RNY for Children - Thoughts?
mousecat88 replied to mousecat88's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I think a serious analysis of the household would be needed. If the child has the surgery but then is sent back to the same environment where he is surrounded by the same types of food and no real support or understanding, that's basically a setup for disaster or at minimum a future revision. I also don't agree that gender changing decisions should be made prior to age 18 for similar reason - lifelong impact without a full grasp of implications. I would certainly, in both situations, have the individual be (for the most part) out of puberty. Yes, I realize your brain continues developing for some time after, etc. It just makes me feel.... uncomfortable. Again, I think I would be more amenable to it if the child was exhibiting serious comorbidities but I was super morbidly obese for years without any (except pseudo tumor cerebri just a few months before I had RNY) so, it's not as if everyone needs the surgery immediately. I'd like to see the child have the chance to make the lifestyle changes on their own as an adult if they didn't have comorbidities. Give them a chance to change without the surgery. -
Food Before and After Photos

@GreenTealael: your tummy must be miniscule. Do you find that your portions are smaller now since your revision, or did you always have the same amount of restriction?
