To bypass or not to bypass...

Basically what LifeChangesLori said. I'm four months post-op Gastric Bypass. I'm not a surgeon or anything but I'd say go for Bypass. I did it because I thought the benefits outweighed the benefits of the sleeve and I needed the extra help with portion control. I did it because I only wanted to go through one surgery and not have to risk coming back for a revision. Never had experience with the lapband. This was the first surgery. ---------------------------- HW- 273 Pre-op Wt- 230 SW- 226 CW- 172 GW- 130 Ht- 5'2.5" DOS- April 26th, 2017 "Only those who try will become." ~FFX
  2. WoW, Thanks for sharing your story, I had lap band 4 years ago and have had nothing but complications. Therefore, I am having a revision and removing the band and having the sleeve done I am much more nervous almost scared yet excited for the surgery and the adventure I think I amostly afraid of failing and the biggest my addiction with food!!!Fighting "Head Hunger" LOVE...1 is too many 1000x . Also, reading the horror stories on the complications thread lol. Of course there is always risk, I'm still moving forward. I to want the best out of life for me and my future with my other half and family, life is way to short to be miserable and my first surgery was cash pay, but "You know money comes and goes no regrets just do it" a friend said as I though I would have to cash pay again lol...Great story look forward to following more post! Congratulations!!!!! Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

    Long Term Success

Happy bandiversary, Carlene! You and Alexandra are both "Long-term Success" stories! Don, the beautiful thing about the band is that it is adjustable. So, even when you're at goal weight, you can get it tweaked if you need some extra help. With RNY, the stoma can stretch over time, allowing food to pass through too quickly. That's why some RNY patients regain their weight, and occasionally get revision to the band. Tami

I have to say that I don't have this -- but I'm a band to bypass revision, so perhaps therein lies the difference? I can take normal sips of water, G2, protein shakes, etc, but I have a feeling when it comes to eating solid food, the rubber will meet the road. At least I hope so. I'm having trouble getting in enough liquid, simply because there's so much of it! I don't have much of an appetite, but food smells don't turn me off like they do you. I start eating soft foods on Tuesday -- eggs, chopped meat and mushy veggies, etc. I'm looking forward to it and I'm supposed to be supplementing with at least 1 shake a day, divided in half -- one half for morning snack and one half for afternoon snack. I'd love to form a support group here for those of us who are just a few weeks out. Bunny

    Feeling sorry for myself Today

It's been a rough journey for you so far Bastian, it's not unexpected that after all the complications you've had and the revision surgery you will be feeling crap. Two surgeries which have radically altered your physiology have knocked you around a lot, it is just your body's way of saying that you need to rest and recoup. I can relate to you wanting to get on with it, but your body just isn't ready for that yet, give the poor thing a chance to catch up lol! From what I have read and researched it is going to be trial and error for quite some time with what you can not tolerate/makes you feel good/makes you feel crap etc you have to re-learn all over again what your new GI tract can take. Be kind to yourself and take it very easy until you do feel better. Hugs and best wishes hun.
  8. Hi, I have had the lap band for a little over 10 years. I had lost 100 lbs but gained 30 back. I recently found out my band migrated. I was having severe acid reflux, regurgitation, and sleepless nights of choking and puking. I finally had some testing done & they found my band migrated and there was a hernia above it and my lower esophagus was having issues pushing food through. I got my fluid taken out on Friday & I am finally able to sleep again. I am really shocked about how strange it is to be able to eat things I wasn't able to for 10 years, I am also enjoying taking a drink while eating. I am going to revise to the gastric bypass surgery & was wondering if anyone has had better success after a revision from the band to bypass? I can't do the sleeve because of my acid reflux issues. I tried to avoid bypass, as to why I had the band to begin with. Something about moving my insides around didn't sit well with me. I also see horror stories about dumping and blood sugar issues. I don't want to gain all my weight back because of a band issue & also don't want to have a removal of one thing and nothing to replace it. I am not sure how fast this will all go, they said they could do emergency surgery if I was still having issues, or do it as a normal surgery. My insurance covers revision. Hopefully soon before I gain all this weight back. I'm enjoying trying different foods I had to avoid for the past 10 yrs. hahahaha.
  9. Honestly, VSG does NOT make you high risk as long as you stay on top of your labs, follow the post-op, and then allow your body to settle into maintenance. I am able to easily eat the recommended 1700-1800 calories with 100gr of Protein and a minimum of 100gr of carbs per day, on top of pushing about 80-100oz of clear fluids. I would recommend that you wait until your body has settled at a good maintenance weight just like what was recommended for me. I begged my surgeon to release me early for TTC only because we were looking at a possible deployment, my weight was stabilized, and my labs had always been stellar. I was released because of my results, my labs, and we needed to see if we could even get pregnant without medical assistance. In the 13-14 months that we tried, I had 2 chemical pregnancies. VSG did NOT contribute to the losses, it was just my body. I had one in January 2011, and got pregnant February 2011, and today I am 6 months pregnant with zero issues related to my VSG. You will absorb all the folic acid you ingest, and I take my Celebrate multi with Iron per my high risk ob. I am high risk for other issues. The stomach doesn't break down folic acid like it does the B12. You'll need to use a sublingual or get injections for B12. The folic acid is absorbed in our intestines. Let me just tell you about band life with pregnancy. There's a few on OH, and they gained lots of weight, puked, and caused slips, and had emergency band removal due to complications even with wide open bands. Morning sickness puking does NOT bode well for the band. I puked on Water some days with my band so I can't imagine being pregnant with it. You should use protection, preferably 2 forms of bc during your losing stage. Your hormones are so out of whack early out, not to mention most post-op diets are low carb, and capacity is half of what it is once you hit about 9-12 months out. Low carb causes ketosis which will cause fetal brain damage and increase risks. Here is a picture that shows where nutrients are absorbed in our intestines, it's used to illustrate malabsorption for RNY, but with the sleeve, this is NOT an issue since there is no re-routing. I just wanted you to see where the folate is actually absorbed. I already researched so much about pregnancy after weight loss surgery, I was prepared. I'm very happy that I can stay on my Celebrate multi with iron, and that my labs have remained stellar throughout this entire pregnancy. I've had labs pulled every 4-6 weeks since I was 5.5 weeks pregnant. Believe me, the band is not safer, nor does it have less complications. There are plenty of us here, and on obesityhelp.com that have HAD to revise. It wasn't just a matter of wanting to, we did it out of necessity. I won't recommend the band to my worse enemy. Best wishes in your research. If you have any other questions, want some research articles, information, statistical data, or other information about the VSG and the band, please feel free to let me know.

    Corn?

I had a 1/2 of corn on the cob twice last week - no problems. I'm also 3.5 months post op. But I'm also a band to sleeve revision and have not had any problems with any foods
  11. Hi!! I had my surgery last Wednesday (26th)!! It actually wasn’t bad being outpatient ! The gas pains are the only pain I have. I hope the weight comes off. I’ve heard it’s harder with revisions.

I was 287 when I had sleeve surgery 0ct 2016 went down to 199 and back up to 237.9 ,just had RNY revision surgery on July 16th due to severe reflux getting worse with the sleeve. I am 4 weeks post OP and I am down 24 lbs. You look awesome and I am wondering how you got rid of any excess skin and no batwing arms. Mine already flap in the wind and I just hate it. You look so happy and confident. Congratulations. Allie in SC

This is exactly why I chose RNY ! So many ppl end up revised to RNY anyways
  14. I can honestly say I never made it to the "green zone". You can read about my back story in my blog(Ravenclaw779). I'm now at the pre-decision part of out-v-revision. I was actually going along at a respectable rate despite not being in the green zone. Combining Weight Watchers with working out and the modest restriction of the band I was down to 216 and losing about a pound a week. About six months ago I started having problems including not being able to eat sitting down or wearing a bra, fitted pants, not being able to eat more than a few small bites before vomiting, not being able to get a meal down in less than 40 minutes, and a growing list of foods I should've been able to eat, but couldn't. A couple of embarassing episodes during business lunches and I now no longer eat out. My weight loss stopped and I now hover around the same weight(223) give or take 5 pounds. I'm not eating enough of the right foods(can't get them down) to feel satisfied or to provide the right fuel for my day. You'd think I'd be losing big time but it appears my body's locked into a preservation mode. Couple of weeks ago I experimented with just Slimfast for two meals and a Lean Cusine for a week and nothing changed. This will sound like a complete cop out - in a crunch, before going into a meeting, when my stomach is growing and roiling so loudly everyone can hear and will immediately try to push a pastry on me(ya know that ain't goin' down), I will bolt a candy bar. It helps - especially when that 4th or 5th cup of coffee isn't giving me enough energy to power through. Most days I need a 2hr nap when I get home to be able to get through the rest of day...bills, laundry, housework... Right now my safe foods are Protein shakes, yogurt, oatmeal, mashed potatoes - think the diet of an 90 year old with no teeth. Recent Upper GI appeared normal; yesterday's endscopy show inflammation of the esophagus, duodenum and stomach and a possible band slip which of course won't be definitive until I have a laproscopy. As we all know, that the same procedure used to place the band. My husband has had enough of my bolting from the table after three bites or having to cover for me a family dinners when I have to excuse myself to quietly barf up my big tablespoon of dinner. My dentist has commented on some minor(for now) damage to my teeth. My oncologist is lecturing me as this is not healthy nutrition for a cancer survivor and the fact that an inflammed digestive tract can lead to other types of cancer. When I started having problems I shouldv'e gone in to see my WLS, but I kept making excuses and blaming myself - surely it was because I just wasn't trying hard enough! That said, I haven't felt normal since my surgery. Even if it weren't for the vomiting and digestive issues, the port, which at first was barely noticable, now feels like scar tissue has encapsulated it. I was so proud when my weight loss meant I could wear a more fitted sweater. Can't do that anymore as it looks like half of my abdomen is pushing forward and you can see it in anything close fitting. Push on it with a bag of groceries, a stack of books - my exercise ball and it's a wave of nausea. I laughingly told a friend I was pretty sure there was an Alicia Keys song title, "My Port Is FIRE!" I know my surgeon is going to want to go in and I'm going to need to decide on taking it out, repair/replacement or going for something like a sleeve. Could I keep the weight off? continue to lose without the band? Am I doomed to be a thin girl in fat gir's body? Ultimately, I have to make a choice on what's going to be the healthiest option and given my history it's more like trying to juggle eggs!
  15. For the past few years I've wanted to get banded. I go to Church with a woman who was very successful and she inspired me. My insurance doesn't cover any procedures so after I was done having kiddos my husband added me to his insurance policy. I officially became covered January 1st, so on Jan 3rd I had a consultation with two surgeons, Dr. Nicholson at the Nicholson clinic and then I had an appointment at True Results, Dallas. During my first appt Dr. Nicholson suggested I consider the sleeve procedure and for a few seconds I considered it...until I walked in to True Results and they told me how dangerous it was, how it hadn't been on the market long enough, etc. etc. I guess since I'd wanted the band for so long they told me everything I wanted to hear. I continued going to True Results for two more months, but in the back of my mind I kept going back to what Dr. Nicholson had said. He told me about problems with the band that were just developing and told me that since I lived so far away from a bariatric facility (I have a 3 hr drive, one way) that the band was more than likely not the route I would want to go. He always maintained that if I wanted it he would gladly give me one, but that he just didn't think it was the perfect fit. I continued to have thoughts that the band probably wasn't the best thing for me, but once i started visiting True Results I felt "stuck" in the sense that I didn't want to waste all of the time I'd already invested. I asked True Results if they offered the sleeve and they said they did, but that their surgeon didn't do as many of them because the band was "better". About a month ago I started really researching the band vs the sleeve and kept coming across numerous people who had the band, then had problems and revised to the sleeve. I didn't want to be one of those people. I want whatever I choose to work for life and i want to be happy with my decision forever. I also didn't want the surgeon that performed my surgery to do them every once in awhile, I wanted my surgeon to be the best of the best. I prayed about my decision and asked God to lead me in the right direction, whatever that direction was. The same day I was searching a forum who specifically pointed out True Results and the surgeon that I would have had and said if you're considering him/that clinic to run as fast away as possible. She wasn't speaking to me, but I felt as though she was if that makes sense. I then decided to contact Dr. Nicholson's clinic and see if they would even take me back. I'd only gone to one appointment and then had "chosen" another doctor, so for all I knew they would tell me tough nuggets. Nope. They said that they loved it when patients researched other doctors and that they were happy that I had "shopped around" and then returned to them. Lastly, I had been upset that the 2 months worth of nutritional appointments would be wasted in a sense, but had decided that in the long run, what was 2 months of my life, if it meant my life and happieness? Just for the heck of it I thought I would ask the Nicholson clinic if there was any way they would give me credit for the nutrition appointments and sure enough they will! Everything is falling in to place and I really couldn't be happier and more excited about getting the sleeve. I'm ready to change my life for the better and looking forward to this journey! Now if I can just jump through the flaming hoops for insurance and get my surgery scheduled
  16. So I'm scheduled to have my revision on June 19th from the band to the gastric sleeve and I wanted to see if anybody traveled after they had theirs. I'm supposed to be flying out of town on June 26th for a family reunion and I guess I want to get a feel of how you guys felt after your surgery. I'm thinking I might be OK by then but I really have no idea so I would love to hear your stories please. Sent from my SM-G925P using BariatricPal mobile app

Thank you! Everyone here is so sweet. I kinda half expected a bit of negativity about revising to another procedure so this is really nice. Thank you.
  18. Have you tried "doctoring" your shakes up? Does he have you guys using the Bariatric fusion ones still? When I had my band with him the pre-op diet was 2 days of sugar free liquids, and maybe since I was a revision he just had me do the same before my sleeve, so I'm not completely sure what his other pre-op diets look like now. If you can add SF ingredients, try some of the DaVinci or Torani syrups. They really make all the difference in the world. Or you can try some PB2 (if allowed). I buy mine online, but the best local selection I've found is at World Market in Westport (for the syrups) and Price Chopper usually has the PB2. To chocolate Protein try adding: PB2 and a squirt of SF PB syrup - tastes reasonably close to a peanut butter/chocolate treat. SF Khalua syrup, and blend with ice - nice "mudslide". SF Salted Caramel syrup - just yum. To vanilla protein try adding: PB2, a squit of SF PB syrup, and a squirt of SF strawberry syrup - PBJ. A squirt of SF White Chocolate syrup, and a squirt of SF Cookie Dough syrup. White chocolate cookie. Low sugar OJ (if you can have it), half packet of Splenda, tsp of SF vanilla pudding, blend with ice - orange julius. ^ not sure how those taste when blended with Water, I use skim extra milk. If you can't make those additions now, they might still help for the first several weeks post-op before you're able to get all your protein in through regular foods.

It was on OH, that board just sucks. However, the person that wrote the "no rights to revision" surgery routine is a person from here that posts on OH as well. On OH that stuff is routine, members don't permit it here so I should have probably explained what I had planned. I did refer to it in PMs, I just didn't want it posted. A handful of people knew but I just wasn't in the mindset to deal with it over here too. In retrospect I don't think I would have had the issues here that I did there. Members moderate the boards pretty well here without moderators. So it would have been fine to post it here. I was scared, I was unsure of changing procedure types. I was afraid it wouldn't work. I had all the usual fears. I was afraid I was making my problems permanent and forever. I'm realizing that being gun shy of WLS was needless, life is good again! It's just that banding wasn't for me. As each day passes I am more and more positive I made the right decision. I haven't barfed except for one of the leak tests. That stuff was vile and disgusting!

Thanks, Frangipani! I didn't really say much about it, I kinda learned my lesson about that on another board when someone who is pro-band and anti-revision offered her opinions. It was just easier to wait until it was done. I was thinking about it six months ago and finally decided to do it. Revision surgery is verrrry hard surgery, I didn't like it much. ;o) I have decided that I don't want to do that again. But in the meantime I am bandless (it is sitting in a baggy on my dresser) and I have a stomach the shape of a tube and the size of a man's middle finger. BTW... I have picked my plastics guy!!! After a year I finally chose one. Dr. Juan Luque in Mexicali. He's very cool, I like him a lot.

Kirajh I just bought a ticket to San Diego today. It was only $98 not counting taxes. It was a really good price. Leaving Dec.4 for a fill.:hungry: BabyGot WOW you are doing great..145!! Below is a quote. I am absolutely amazed that someone would do what this wife did. She wanted him to fail. She may have wanted to kill him. Hopefully the guy smartens up and leaves her. She will sabatage all his weight loss efferts. :thinkMy own doc had a patient who had bypass and less than 24 hours after surgery his wife decided to sneak in Mickey D's for him to eat. Well, he ripped out staples, got a leak, and an infection. The doc took him back to OR and fixed it. Didn't even charge the patient for the additional surgery or hospital days. Five days AFTER the leak his wife requested he do revision surgery on her. Failed bypass to band.
  22. I am currently 10 months post op band revision to RNY . What a journey it's been ! My expectations was to lose weight but I was told I would lose weight extremely slowly and not that much because of previously being banded . Well I hit my 100# loss and couldn't be happier ! Sleeve to Bypass

Hi, I had my Sleeve in February of 2014 but then had my revision to bypass this past November. The surgery was a little bit more difficult to get over but I was several years older too. Unfortunately, it did not cure my reflux. It's not as bad but I still have it and I'm still having to take protonix. I've lost a little more weight but not a lot. I still have 30 pounds to go so hoping this will come off soon. With the Sleeve I never got sick, i just had restrictive ability to eat. With the bypass I will get sick if I eat anything I'm not supposed to eat like bread, chicken skin and any kind of beef. It's much harder to get my protein in because eating meat is so difficult now. I miss my sleeve.
  24. In a few hours I will arrive at the hospital for my revision from lapband to bypass...yay!!!I am so happy....can't sleep..December 28 is finally here!!

We'll be here for you. My mom told my decision to revise to VSG instead of getting another band was "reckless". So, I know how you feel. You just lean on us, and we'll be your cheerleaders from afar. Don't let anyone get ya down. I'd say show them some of the before and after pics, but they probably wouldn't believe we are the same people.
