Any Bi-polar (or Other Mental Illness) Lap Banders?
vlp1968 replied to tabithainbremerton's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was diagnosed with bipolar at the age of 26 or so. Have had 3 major manic episodes, 2 of which landed me in the hospital. Escaped the hospital by the skin of my teeth the third time. I've had my ups and downs since then. Been doing great for about 3 years now, stable on meds. I too had to meet with a psychiatrist before surgery and was completely honest. She talked a lot about addiction transfer (I have other addictions besides food). I was successful loosing all my excess weight in about 10 months. 30 pounds has crept back on. I plan to loose 20 of it, I got just a little to thin, or so people tell me. As long as I loose enough to get back into my jeans I'll be happy. -
I was required to start all of my Vitamins right after surgery. Morning: Multi-Vitamin w/ zinc and sublingual B12 Lunch: Calcium 600 with 800 D and B1 Dinner: Calcium 600 with 800 D Bedtime: Iron 65mg and Vitamin C My surgeon also prescribed folic acid and prilosec. Luckily i had no co-morbitaties so the only daily med i take is for my ADHD and when I can start my BC again. I am almost 3 weeks out. I bought a weekly pill organizer that allows you to remove each day and take it with you. I take my morning ones before Breakfast. My lunch ones before lunch. My dinner before dinner and my bedtime at bedtime. This is not always at the same time everyday. I usually take them with something besides Water. Milk, juice, crystal light.. Whatever. It hides the taste a little bit. My multi and calcium are pretty large. the B1 is the most disgusting though. I am also super busy.. Single mom of a one year old and a full time nursing student. I feel your pain! Good luck!

Hello! I would like to start this thread by assuring all readers that I love my band. I have been banded for 3 months now. Even if I never lost another pound, I understand things about food and eating that I never did before. For instance, what full feels like. Or, the joys of bringing home leftovers from a restaurant. Or, not feeling like I have to order the largest plate on the menu and eat multiple large helpings in order to feel satisfied. Actually, eating is now more enjoyable because I can savor it, rather than shovel it. With that being said, I have to admit that I'm quite an impatient person. I understand that I have an underlying desire for all things to happen immediately as I want them. In regards to the band, weight loss is feeling slow. So far, I've lost 25 pounds since day of surgery. I suppose in three months, I expected to be losing more. It would be my goal to lose 100 pounds by my first 'bandiversary'. Are there any veterans who can speak to what feels like a slow start? Do the first few months have a tendency to feel like a shit show? I know this sounds ridiculous, but how important is exercise in motivating results? I know people have lost plenty of weight without it, but is that really an effective approach? Can anyone speak to how they felt after their first 3 months or so. This is an interesting time in the life of a bander. It almost feels like being a toddler. I can say that my experience has been fantastic. Never have I experienced sickness, pain, or any other undesirable moments. I'm interested to know when veterans starting "seeing" results. And please, (kindly) feel free to tell me I'm being a little whiny, impatient banded toddler. It's confusing because who really knows what normal is? It is an entirely subjective situation. It's like going to the doctor and being asked if you have a "normal period." How the hell am I supposed to know if it's normal, I've had no other experience but my own! Thanks all!!!

Protein Powder
line-dancer replied to asimplegrl4484's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use pre-made did the power in the beginning but just to the point I couldn't find anything to mix with it so it was good. I don't drink it much because I don't fill satisfied or that I have had anything to eat and 3 -4 more hours to wait is just to long. I do drink it when I am low on cals/protient or days I go to the gym for that extra boost.................line dancer -
Hi Guy,s Just got back from nearly 3 weeks of holidays. Hawaii, Los Angeles and Vegas it was fantastic. I ate like a pig and stuffed in as much as i could. When at dinner with friend i quietly went to the restrooms half time and had a purge then went back to the table and continued. No one was the wiser. When we returned home. (So glad to be home.) TOTAL WIEGHT GAINED , No, No , -0.5 of a kilo I couldnt believe the scales. I lost 1/2 a KG . Normally a holiday would be a gain of 5 or 10 kg. I,m a happy old soul. Mark.

Emend or other anti-nausea med for surgery
Sue Magoo replied to Who'sThere's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi: I had very bad nausea after my band. Then 9 months later I had gallbladder surgery and it wasn't so bad. The surgeon had me use one of the scopolamine (sp?) Patches before the surgery. He told me they would do everything that they could for the nausea during surgery with meds. He sent me home with scripts for zofran and something that I could use by suppository in case the nausea was making me toss all of the oral meds. It ended up not being bad after gallbladder removal. Then, this past May I had a tummy tuck. Had all of the same meds and I had horrible nausea with dry heaves for the first 18 to 24 hours postop. I don't know why it worked with gallbladder, but not with tummy tuck. It may have been because I was having anesthesia alot longer, but I'm really not sure. I have issues with nausea with pain meds too. After lapband and gallbladder I didn't need much for painkiller. After the tummy tuck I took pain meds for about a week at bedtime but I kept up with the anti-nausea drugs while taking the pain meds. Hope all goes well for you. I love my band and my new flat tummy! Sue -

I'm a bit freaked out by that, was expecting a loss. I'm now thinking I'm gonna be one of those ppl who doesn't lose anything much after RNY. Feel like crying

My morning nausea was present until about 3 weeks post op. I would get really hot and dizzy while getting ready in the morning to the point where I felt like I would pass out. It does get better with time and eventually goes away. Hang in there!

14 day pre op liquid diet
RJ'S/beginning replied to Quenae757's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
the first time it was cancelled because an emergency came up and they needed my spot for someone else...So the day before I was called and told in two weeks I would have to start again...Did not bother me much...I had hoped that if something happened to me that someone else would give up there space...And it did happen to me and others had to be rescheduled... I lost 27 lbs before my surgery...I did it by learning how to eat properly and used some of the techniques I was taught by the team before hand. You can work out if you want..But I think your body is going to trick you up be being tired somewhat at this point...After the surgery you need to wait a while while you are healing.... Don' t stress about it...it will come off I promise!!!! -
I had to crush my pills for the first 2 weeks, and then found that I could swallow the smaller pills -- I still take chewable vitamins (the non-chewables are huge!) -- I think that if your pills are tiny, it might be ok to swallow after a couple of weeks, but as others have said, the larger pills will take a while.

Thursday June 20, 2013--Band Day...I'm so nervous..
carriet replied to Prynn65's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am exactly with you, down to the same surgery date!! But I have learned so much in this forum, from tips and tricks, to what to expect, to a little bit scary posts, to amazing recovery and success stories!! Just spend some time poking aroound, looking at the various topics. I dont post alot, but I read a ton!! I too am self pay, no long process, got the pamphlet, tests done, scheduled my EGD, within two weeks and surgery is thursday! I started the pre op diet, which is liquid but for 1- 350 calorie meal a day, and I have checked, highlighted and double highlighted passages in the pamphlet that spells out the post op diet. One of the things that helped me the most , as far as a comfort level for post op, was the (phone) conversation I had with the nutritionist. She spelled out the first 6 weeks, day by day and I wrote it all down. which days are clear liquid, then liquids after 2 days, then mushy foods after 2 weeks, then solids....along with which vitamins to take and when. If you can get yours on the phone and make them break it down for you. Your DOC office will have one on staff, so use them!!! I will send you a friend request and we can do this together!!!! -
I got my band on Feb 19 and it gurgles at me too. If I drink a little too much or to big of a gulp I will get "feedback." It sometimes gurgles to say "FEED ME!" if I have gone more than 3 hours between meals. I giggle to myself when I hear it.

Don't beat yourself up...pick yourself up....dust yourself off and move on! Voice your concerns at your appointment on Wednesday....They are there to help you through this [emoji3]. Carbs are evil! I know what you mean there....I've been having mashed potatoes more then I probably should because they go down so well....I'm just over 6 weeks post op as well....We will make this work! Good luck at your appointment! -
I am one week post op and ive lost nothing... not a single thing! I would be dancing on the rooftops if i lost 15! 2 weeks is to premature to be worrying about the weight loss.... i was worried too... but we need to allow our bodies to heal and do what it needs to do. As long as we do the right thing... the weight will come off

Our bodies morph over time, with age, childbirth, etc. Funny, but I have found the opposite of your experience. I find myself looking thinner at my current weight than I did in my youth. I attribute that to lots of loose skin and what I call "dripping fat" that seems to pool in the loose skin, lol! One other thing - our skin and supporting structures take a while to bounce back. My neck was worse at 50 pounds lost (at around 2-3 months) than it is now at nearly 150 pounds lost at 18 months post op. Also, I haven't lost any significant weight since January, and people tell me all the time I look like I've lost more. A plastic surgeon also told me that after people have plastics, they continue to improve for 2-3 years. So, I'd say give it some time and things may shift and tighten.

I am also having surgery at University of Colorado Hospital and my surgeon is also Dr. Rothchild. I have a weight loss goal of 20-25 pounds and so far I have lost about 10 of that. I am currently working on my 3 month multi disciplinary plan. I have 2 more appointments left. Last one being August 14th. It actually turned out to be 4 visits rather than 3 since the 90 days was spread out weird. I am so excited to meet other people in my area experiencing the same thing as me. Sounds like we could all help encourage one another. -
Hi Patty, As someone mentioned earlier about bruising, I too got some bruising (black and blue) on my tummy where some of ther shots were but it totally clears up in a few weeks. Good luck to you and keep us posted! Lisa

blood thinner shots?
Pradice73 replied to Pradice73's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
ok I wasnt sure what others were doing because I had a friend who said 'well I didnt need those'. I wanted to say well maybe he isnt as cautious as my dr is but I let it go. I have to do the Lovenox shot for 7 days, once a day. They are better than the heparin which would have been 3 times a day for 10 days. Lucky me haha -
Insurance denial day before surgery :(
Rncbarbie posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I did all the testing, nutrition, counseling, two week pre-op liquid diet and the day before my surgery I got call from dr office that insurance company will not approve my surgery. Seems the insurance company wants me on three meds for my hypertension even though I'm on two and its uncontrolled. Oh and pre-diabetes doesn't count anymore. I'm so upset. So here is my question, in starting this journey I was 240 lbs, this morning I weigh 205. Do I just keep going? My dr office put in appeal but I'm just tired of being sick and tired. I feel lost... I learned all about the sleeve and changes to make and I was so ready. Any advice?
