Water water water...
KindaFamiliar replied to chilepeppr4's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You'll still have it... In fact, you'll need it more than ever!! But it's unlikely that you'll be able to down 16oz at a time... At nine months out, I usually go thru about 600 ml during my training session (1hr) each morning... So you'll certainly still be able to drink it... I hope that answers your query to some degree... -
Using Warehouse Stores to Manage Food Costs After Weight Loss Surgery
Dr. Adeyeri posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
As you begin the process of weight loss by changing what you eat, you’ll quickly feel better (and lighter). For example, look at the difference in what you now purchase at the grocery store since your operation--you see much more ‘real food’ and far fewer pre-packaged items in the grocery cart now, that's for sure. But fruits, vegetables, protein drinks and lean cuts of meat cost more than pre-packaged junk food, which can be attributed to one of the reasons some lower income people lose the battle with obesity. Since you’ve made a decision to change your life, including what you eat, you’re going to be buying several of these healthier options in bulk, as they will serve as the new staples in your nutrition plan. Your dietitian and bariatric support team will prescribe some foods and drinks that you will consume just about every day so it makes sense to buy these items in volume. I love Facebook. It’s a way I can stay in touch with my patients (and their families) here in New Jersey between office visits and once they are on maintenance after reaching goal weight. I recently posted a query asking my post-op patients what healthy staple items they buy from the big warehouse stores—BJ’s, Costco, Sam’s Club--and I received many helpful responses that I’d like to share with you. Armed with these terrific recommendations below, you’ll eat healthier, save time, money and require fewer trips to the grocery store during your weight loss journey. “What "go-to" items do you purchase from warehouse stores since weight loss surgery?” · Premier protein shakes · Protein bars · Sam’s chicken sausage with mozzarella · Muscle Milk · Liter bottles of water · Optimum Nutrition protein powders · Frozen Mahi Mahi filets · Cranberry almond chicken salad in 4 oz. cups. · Chicken breasts and ground turkey · Baby Bell light cheese · Frozen veggies · Veggie burgers · Salmon fillets · Fresh spinach · Probiotic 10 and Fiber Gummies · Ready-to-eat veggie tray · Gold Standard Whey, Kirkland Fiber Caps, Opti-Fiber, Kirkland Calcium Citrate · Mini cucumbers · Bagged chopped kale salad · Kirkland plain Greek yogurt · Kirkland citrus green tea, Crystal Light · Figgy Pops, Healthy Choice fudge bars · Quinoa · Chia seeds If you are a member of these clubs, take an hour or two and really peruse the aisles in search of healthy products that support your nutrition plan. Keep in mind, many food items can be frozen and thawed when you need it to avoid spoilage. Ask your IWL dietitian for more ideas or bring in a sample of a food or drink you’re not sure of (take a screen shot of the nutrition label before you buy it). If you’d like to friend me on Facebook, I can be found here. -

Am I drinking too fast?
KindaFamiliar replied to Ilovecats1985's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone's post-surgery instructions are different... I'd assume that you should be sipping slower(longer breaks between sips) and therefore making your 1oz last longer than 3 minutes... But then, I'm not your surgeon/nutritionist... Your best bet would be to ask them... Maybe give it a day or so, gather a few questions (you'll have some), and call them once with a few queries rather than a few times with one question each time.. Good luck to you @@Ilovecats1985 And welcome to sleevehood... -
@@Margie122 I think you've answered your query with the final two words of your post... No, I'm not judging or anything like that. My point is, you know yourself and your situation better than anyone else. If YOU are saying that you have no excuse then, well, you've no excuse... And by the way... Walking SUX!!! But it's gotta be done... Good luck with it all... Kinda...

Weight Gained Since Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery
reallyrosy replied to sleeve 4 me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Missy et al, I went back and looked at the original query and missy is right..it wasnt originally limited to 3+yrs out. How we hijacked it to mean that, i dunno...did not read thru all the years. But these discussions DO meander. I guess we ought to set up a new topic?? How about: 3+years after VSG maint.? Or gain? Or struggling 3+yrs out? -
Did anyone fake their 6 months supervised weight loss?
Jim in Utah replied to stephyr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can't imagine how you can fake it. The insurance company wants to see that straight from the doctor (my doctor's office submitted all that stuff for me). And they also worked with me on the payments. As long as you have insurance that will cover the surgery (which your surgeon's office will look into for you) I can't imagine what the problem would be. And, there are going to be tons of other expenses anyhow for all the tests you have to get done before. So I find it an odd query frankly. -
I had a RNY so I try and answer some of the queries from this type of surgery. Since you had a DS, you can add valuable insight for others going through this surgical process. It is not that common, so your insight could be very valuable.

Usually, I'm pretty even keeled, even on the Internet, but some questions...
SoulGlo replied to no onions's topic in Rants & Raves
You're spot on. Even 'veterans' start out ignorant and clueless and hopefully someone answered their queries and questions in a respectful manner so they were able to build up their knowledge bases in order to progress into knowledgeable veterans instead of chiding or humiliating them. Not all bariatric programs are made the same. Some bariatric programs make ensure their patients are fully informed whilst others are more lax when it comes to informing their patients. Therefore, some people have more gaps in their knowledge than others. I don't understand why if someone is so annoyed by 'these stupid questions' then don't just skip the thread and erase the question from their minds and move on? What's the point in posting a reply just to whinge or belittle the asker? Unless they're a masochist or a touch sadistic -
Last minute pre op queries - please advise
Brigitteboyce17@gmail.com posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good day all, I have a couple of last minute gastric bypass queries (laporoscopy if all goes well): Where exactly will the wounds and dressings be - high enough to wear underpants and pants without interfering with them... do T-shirts / night shirts have to be much looser than normally to accommodate the swelling and dressings? Also, is anyone on Seroxat (UK) (Paxil in US) and could they please tell me if they were able to crush the tablets of if they had to ask for liquid form prescription. Many thanks in advance to all for any advice. Best Brigitte -
per-op diet is killing me!
marshliejoe replied to 45678's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey, I understand you because I know how low carb diet can change your life. And it can be quite difficult to follow pre-op diet. But I think this is the best way to achieve a long term weight loss. I have gone through the same situation and consult with Dr. Naim in California to resolve my queries regarding lap band. The LAP BAND surgery has non-surgical adjustments that helped me to minimize the potential for weight regain. -
Hi, I have a complicated story and need some input. I won't go into a long story as it is quite twisty turny. Long and the short of it is that I had an RNY done 3 years ago and lost all my weight to goal in 9 months. I kept it off and loved my bypass. Then at the 2 year mark, I developed a rare side effect and the decision was made by my medical to team to reverse it to see if it would mitigate or relieve the effects/complication with the intent to sleeve me as soon as I was healed to continue with the restrictive aspect. (because it is not a common situation, they knew it was possible it would not help) They reversed it in Sept 2014. Again, I healed great but promptly started gaining (Even though I did my very best to maintain my RNY eating habits) in January 2015, I was cleared to have the sleeve done and I have been working out like crazy daily to hold the weight gain at bay. The complication is still an issue but we have resigned ourselves to that fact and have been managing it quite well. My sleeve date will be mid june.... Here is my query... I loved my RNY. I loved the restriction and everything about it. I hear so much about people failing the sleeve/the sleeve failing the people and converting to an RNY. I am very afraid that the sleeve won't be enough. I regained 40 lbs and only need to lose 40 to get back to goal. I would like to hear some feedback about the sleeve. Do you have restriction? Is it noticeable? Average weight loss? IS it a tool that can work? I know how the RNY works. Can I (if I use it properly and respect it) have an honest expectation to lose weight with the sleeve?

200 lbs or more to lose?
jayhawk1965 replied to butterfly23's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Welcome! I am saddened to hear that you were feeling judged by some Forum members--the place where you should feel safest. Know that you are not alone! I am a slow but steady loser. My pieces of advice: 1. Find Protein you like and get your recommended grams of protein in every day. You will lose faster, protect against hair loss and will feel great! I drink Isopure Zero Carb (I like the orange, grape and fruit punch flavors). 2. Celebrate every 10 pounds. Looking at the "BIG" number of what I wanted to lose was overwhelming but the 10 lb milestones were attainable. My celebrations were a new purse, a massage, a new pair of pants, etc. Not food. 3. Surround yourself with supportive people and accept compliments graciously. You will see some changes before others and others will see some changes before you do. Focus on the fact that you are losing enough for people to notice and you are getting healthy. 4. Find exercise that you enjoy or can at least tolerate. Last but not least, I am a work in progress on the emotional eating issue that got me to 389 pounds. Now I ask myself, "Am I really hungry or am I thirsty?" "Am I really hungry or did something just happen that upset me?" Stopping to query myself helps focus me and then I make an informed choice instead of just eating. Best of luck on this journey--it is quite a ride and I am only half-way there! -
I completely get what Ur saying as I feel and felt the same, and I put a query up bout my sleeve and got chastised aswell when I wasn't actually saying what they believed

What do you tell people?
QuilterGal replied to QuilterGal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am proud of my decision. This is not about pride. It's about privacy. I am a very private person and I'm tired of people offering unsolicited opinions about my weight and body. I find it exceedingly rude, and I suspect the changes that will come following WLS will result in additional queries. -
The Rules: Do you follow them?
hamitchell replied to MichiganChic's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Galfriday--like you, i am not a sweets person pre surgery, but an eat too much person (loved bread). Not having a sweet tooth makes the rules a bit easier I think. Michigangirl--interesting timing for me on your query. I have been on plateau for 10 days at 202 lbs., but lost 4 lbs the last 4 days. During which time I ate 2 slices pizza, blueberries, extra yogurt, some m and m's at val party. All in moderation. I am insulin dependent diabetic, so usually no fruit or bread. It is nice not to feel deprived and lose weight. All things in moderation! -
Wowsa iammomof3!! That is truly spectacular weight loss...especially for a woman! Clearly you are exactly on course and doing great! I'm so glad you weren't offended by my taking a risk to query you on your eating habits. I just think we in the bariatric surgery community owe it to each other to tell the truth, at all times, because there's a lot of BS and spin out there. This is serious business, and folks like yourself are heroes and role models to potentially thousands of other people who are suffering like we were under the morbidly obese nightmare. Sooo happy for you lady!!

Four Days Post Op - The "is this normal" questions
RozzieJ posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone I'm a Day 4 Post Op Sleever from Down Under and I had some queries that I figured you would all be best at answering. My surgery was last Wednesday, 22 October and was a complete success. I was out of hospital on Friday and have very little pain from my incisions. My greatest amount of pain is from my IV site which hurts like a complete mudda four days on!! I have no idea what they jambed down that needle, but holy God, it's done some damage!!! Now, I've got all my information of how I should be eating from the dietician. I am currently on a full liquid diet and can consume anything that can be sucked through a straw. Each day, I increase my quantities in ten milligram increments until I reach 100ml which is where I'll stay. I've been very careful about not inhaling liquids too fast or having anything too thick, but I'm finding no troubles at all with what I'm doing thus far. I measure out my amounts and I eat my Soups or drinks using a spoon and always make sure that one spoon sip is taken and swallowed down before I embark on the next one. What I'm struggling with is that I don't seem to have any problems with my liquids. I don't get the feeling I'm too full or that I've drunk too quickly or anything. And this will sound strange to ask, but is that normal???? I'd have thought I'd have some issues at some point. Albeit, I'm not pushing the envelope here - I think down my liquids and can take regular sips without problem My only side effect I seem to get is gas - a joyously happy sensation where I end up trying to mimic a mother rocking a baby, in the hopes that the wretched air bubbles come up. So from everyone's experiences here, am I sounding like I'm doing ok?? Should I be feeling like I can't take in the designated mills that my dietician has advised?? I certainly have had no nausea and every day I feel better and better with little tiredness. I'm thinking I'm doing something wrong!!! That said, I am losing weight. Since surgery, I've come down about 3-4kgs. I'm just worried that I'm doing something amiss and will bugger up my new tummy and make it too big. So please forgive the early day paranoia talking, but would love to hear everyone's opinions/advice. Thanks kindly RozzieJ -
Dr. Jalil Illan with Baja Bariatrics and Omar Acosta - A Warning
Madam Reverie replied to *susan*'s topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hey Alex. Just a thought.. If you're asking people for ways to contact the 'main man', rather than always being firewalled by Omar, you may need to ask people to do it off this thread. I suspect everything that's posted is being read by you know who and contingencies are devised accordingly.. I have a good idea with regards to your query. I shall PM you that idea... -
Not if your doc is OK with it. Most docs won't allow their patients to make that decision. A good doctor will query you about what you're eating and if you're losing weight and exercising? Sometimes patients feel like they're not tight enough but they're eating slider foods. If you're following the rules and do not feel satiety for 4 hours I see no reason to not ask for another fill. I know I did, 6 times.

Go pubic at work or not?
Bandista replied to Crissy A's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a private person and only told a handful of people. There are a couple I wish I hadn't told -- not that they aren't supportive but because I worry about my secret being kept. Not sure why I'm like this but there it is. Must the years of embarrassment about weight issues, feeling like I was being judged for being heavy. Now I'm getting queries about the weight loss and I just say that I've been working really hard and I'm obsessed with exercise now, which is true. You can always tell people later but you can't un-tell! I would just say I'm on a liquid diet supervised by my doctor or something like that. Good luck to you! -

Hello, my name is Julie O'Connor and I am an MSc student at the University of Derby. I am conducting a study which looks at adherence to Vitamin supplementation in post-operative Roux-en-Y Bariatric surgery patients and would really appreciate your help. I specifically need responses from people who have undergone Roux-en-Y surgery at least 12 months ago and who are at least 18 years old. If you decide to participate in the study you will be asked to complete an online survey about your use of vitamin supplements, together with some general questions which ask about your feelings of confidence in how your own thoughts and views may influence your wellbeing . Please click the following link for further information and to take the online survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/F8T86YC If you have any queries, please email the researcher, Julie O'Connor on J.OConnor2@unimail.derby.ac.uk Thank you for reading this posting and I do hope that you are able to find the time to help me with this research.
