How was your recovery 1 week after surgery
PamJ4 replied to too much of me's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all - I was banded 6/27 and the first few days were awful. Had the same doubts of what in the heck did I do to myself?! I didn't have a sore throat or back/shoulder pain as I was told to expect. Did have an allergic reaction to the liquid hydrocodone the first night, a thrombosis at the IV site that lasted a week, a killer pulled calf muscle that lasted slightly over a week and all the other mess you guys mentioned, too - burping like crazy (thank you, Gas X chewables!!), some chest pain near the port and belly soreness. :sick This week I feel much better, but I am so sick of eating soup!!! The silver lining on my trials is that I'm 20 lbs. down :whoo: since starting the liquid diet 10 days pre-op. Once you get past the hump of the first week it does get better and you feel more optimistic! But, I have to tell ya, I have been hungry - even through part of the first week. So those of you who wrote that you're kind of dieting on your own until your first fill sounds so true! It's weird, but each night I'm having different dreams about food - one night Chinese, one night something else...so I know I'm hungry and sick of liquid food!! A few more days until mushy, thank God! Our first local support group is in 2 weeks, so I'm looking forward to that, too. We have to remember there's such a huge part of this that is psychological and emotional... Good luck everyone on your losses! Is anyone else eating a lot after 2 weeks of surgery?
nuddybuddy replied to 1hawgfan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on Aug 8th (9 days ago) I was really starting to starve to death & since my doc. said full liquids anything you can get thru a straw without using a straw I have been having strained cream of chicken & cream of broccoli soup. I also put some creamy potato soup in the blender.I'm assuming these are okay, as they would go thru a straw. I've got to tell you after having only the diet jello & popsicles, broth & juices, these are REALLY hitting the spot. Plus I have 2 protein shakes a day & no sugar added, fruit flavored applesause & some water/juice/diet lipton gree tea. So... I think I'm gonna make it.I just need to start exercising now that I am feeling better. I'm still not supposed to bend down for another week or tug & pull as in the dishwasher, dryer, vacuuming, sweeping & mopping. & no lifting over 10 lbs for 6 weeks. I won't last 6 weeks on that, but I'll be careful. What has your doc. said? I know some people that are jumping in & doing everything right away & I could too, since I'm feeling much better, but I don't want to take the chance of causing band slippage, or just not healing. What do you think? -
Hello all! I'm having surgery on 10/19 with Dr. Marsden in DFW. Anyone else on the site use him? He seems very nice and I know he's done thousands of procedures - just curious if anyone else has used him? Any advice, or what to expect would be much appreciated! Looking forward to my last diet ever

Sheeez, what a day it was yesterday. I made the down payment for my surgery via credit card. About an hour later the lady at the doc's office calls me back at my office to tell it'd been declined. I was stunned because I knew darn well the balance was way below the limit. Sooooo, I get off the phone with her and about 10 mins later mh dh (who is also my boss) comes upstairs to my office to tell that Morgan Stanley just called him to get his PERMISSION to put the charge through. The f*****s informed on me!!! Then they proceeded to clear the charges I'd made this week with him too. Like it's just some big freakin secret when I spend £6.00 on amazon. So I had to call the office back and tell them to run it again. How humiliating to have some darn company think that the woman on a joint account needs her husband's permission before she can spend money. I can see them calling ME to see if I made the charge but sheez. My dh said to the guy, you know it really isnt necessary. It's not like I'm going to go beat her brains out for spending money. It's funny but not funny, ya know??? I'd go burn my bra in protest if it didnt mean my boobs would be in my lap the rest of the day like two racoons fighting under a blanket. lol:faint:

i have some questions! please help :)
Betsyjane replied to kmg1997's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, I've heard people say that. Mine's in the middle too, but I don't notice it. I do hear that that goes away with weight loss....... Congrats on your 10 pounds! I just found out today that I no longer have osteoporosis! I don't take the meds for it....The only changes since last year are weight loss and weight bearing exercise! I've gone from the red danger zone in both hips and my spine, to the green safe zone in 2 areas just barely not into the safe zone yert for the third area! Cool! I thought giving up my diabetes meds was fun...This is great! -
For those that have lost 70lbs or more
She Smiles replied to wannabthin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat like Jacqui, which is how we are advised to here in Australia. I eat good healthy foods (which includes rice and Pasta - I can't eat bread) in smaller portions. I also don't count calories/protein. I eat Snacks like almonds, yougurt or fruit cups if I need to, which might be every other day. And I still eat chocolate whenever I feel like it. I've exercised 3-5 times (like a gym session of treadmill, bike and eliptical, a spin class, or a 5km run around my the block near my house and I am also currently doing a boot camp session twice a week) a week for 30-60 minutes since about 2 months after my surgery. I'm now running 5-10km fun runs when they are organised in my city and am fitter and stronger than I have ever been in my life. I've lost about 85lbs in just over 10 months and have about another 20 to go to my dream weight. But I've already exceeded my Surgeon's goal weight. That said, I had a partial unfill a couple of months ago due to a bad stomach bug where I couldn't keep a thing down, and I have yet to get back to my sweet spot. I'm going for a fill tomorrow and I will be back to my pre-bug fill level, so hopefully that will move my loss along a little. -
Does everyone who loses 75+ lbs need plastic surgery?
Jachut replied to kero's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No I dont. I dont believe in Protein as the be all and end all of everything, to me its just one of the macronutrients we need - of the same importance as carbs and fats, not more. I dont count protein grams, I dont eat a ton of protein (probably average out 40 to maybe 60 grams most days for my 5ft 10, 168lb frame) and I have not had hanging skin, nor did I lose my hair. I think a well balanced diet, with plenty of the good fats can help, and taking a Multivitamin supplement is good insurance for everyone. I guess the only thing I could say that has perhaps helped is that I'm an exercise fanatic. I run looooong distances and I lift very heavy weights. I work very hard, at least an hour of really hard stuff most days. No namby pamby walking for me, lol. But I really think its luck of the draw. I also had 3 huge 10 lb babies and never got a single stretchmark, and I did not carry weight on my stomach but more, all over, stretched over a tall body. I also was overweight/ish most of my life, but not severely obese for more than about 4 years. Simple as that. -

Is it possible to get a fill during surgery?
jjsmiles replied to time2lose's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it depends on the size of the band (not sure though). I have the bigger 10 cc band (you can put 10 mL of saline in it) and my surgeon filled it to 3 cc's at surgery. I think if you get a smaller band - 4cc, they generally don't put in any saline at surgery. I didn't realize that I had saline in my band until I had my first fill. I think is totally up to your doctor. -
kaisers 6 month weight loss classes???? HELP!!
AudsMom replied to jhanei's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am also a Kaiser patient but for up here in Northern. The facilities up here LUCKILY do not require the 6 month class. BUT, it would be a good requirement. It took me 4 months to get my surgery completed, and yeah i lost a ton of weight before hand, because they have you diet before hand the 1200 cal diet. And you have to loose 10% to even meet with the Case Manager. So in a way they do have a diet. I have however heard that even if you dont loose on the 6 month diet you keep progressing for surgery. However have you talked to other southern patients? A year and half is a LONG time estimate. They always quote us 3-6 months. Plus during ur 6 month diet you should be doing the preop stuff... appts and what not. At your orientation as just how long it is going to take. And honestly it does all fly. I am 2 m onths post op and it feels like i went to orientation yesterday. Another option is self pay.... -
Yogurt issues and kidney stones...
Pamalamadingdong replied to trishfish's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been worried about kindey stones, I've had more than I can count in the last 10 years. I really don't want anymore, sorry you are dealing that them I know how much they suck. -
There are several factors that will determine whether or not you might have sagging skin. The more weight you have to lose, the longer you have been overweight and the faster you lose will contribute to sagging or non sagging skin. I know that I will have extra skin because I have been this weight for about 10 years and I have 150 lbs to lose. I can tell that my tummy already sags even though I haven't lost a lot. For a long time I thought I couldn't handle the sag but I would rather have it than the fat. Exercise will help some people. Insurance will normally pay for the surgery to remove it if there is a medical reason. If it is for purely cosmetic reasons, they won't cover it.

I was sleeved jan 7, 2006 and I've been through all the phases.. For me, I got a chicken soup base that is made by mc cormick. It's a White container with a red lid. It's moist 1 spoon to 1 cup and added slices of avocado and used scissors to cut very thin pieces of green onion. Also I drank avant edge chocolate shakes over ice. They were good. When I could eat more substantially my favorite foods were jerky, protein and rather easy to digest and stringsters string cheese. Cottage cheese with pineapple juice adds a change or soft mandarin oranges from a can. one thing that is hard to realize is that these all will pass and your life will go back to normal. Watch protein and biotin for a year. I did not and my hair fell out in clumps because of the lack of vitamins etc they tell you to take. It was new back then and there wasn't as much information. I also started to eat whatever I wanted even drinking and eating at the same time but I paid for it for years with 30 min of a stomach ache. It took me forever to realize take a little wait 10 min and then take more because by the time u realize your stomach is hurting it's too late. The first 3 months is hard, just try to be creative with your foods most anything white will fill you up fast. Oatmeal is nice when you are ready, juice from meat with grits??? Take one day at a time and revel in the fact that you will soon be feeling so proud to be in public and pick whatever clothes you want and whichever store you choose and don't forget to get some exercise. It sux but it's important to keep your muscle mass and that requires exercise and protein, eggs whatever it takes. As far as shakes though again Adant Edge silver container. They are good... Good luck you will be fine!!

The first 10 days were liquid only and then onto pureed foods. At 30 days I started on soft foods which lasts until 12 weeks out. I'm nearly 8 weeks out now and still can't manage most meats and canned fish (fresh fish is ok).

How long for hospital weight to drop off?
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to greenchilegoddess's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I had my VSG I was 278.2 the week before surgery, 271 when discharged, and 258.3 at my post-op appointment 10 days later. I had very minimal bruising or swelling that time. When I had my revision (8 months later due to gerd), I was 222 a week before surgery, left the hospital at 234.4 (was there 4 days due to needing iron), and was 215.7lbs at my one week post-op appointment. I had loads of bruising this time around. The picture is from a week post-op and I still had visible bruising at 20 days post-op (second picture) though it never hurt. -
Hi All, I've read on the board about people being on a liquid diet for 10 days or more pre-op, and am wondering if this is accurate? I am scheduled for Surgery on January 11th and my doctor is saying with my BMI I only need to be on liquids for 3-4 days. I just was wondering if anyone knows why the difference? :help: Lori

haven't told my hubby yet
Patterba replied to PMOSS's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Interesting topic. I just flat out told my husband I am doing this. I have spent soooo many years worrying and catering to my entire family, I decided this is my time. I only wish I came to this point 10 years earlier. Don't get me wrong I love my family unconditionally. But the kids are out of the house, my husband is consumed with keeping his job and I work too. This is my time. I have heard so much about women not putting themselves first. But not this mama ... she is going to the top of the list this time. -
:cry Howdy everyone! I am starting the whole process with a surgical group in Georgetown, KY. I was wondering if anyone has any feedback on Dr. Oldham or his partner, Dr. Weiss? I am going Tuesday (10/16) to do the psych and nutrition evals and blood work and so on.

Reaction to being "severly obese"
ugagirl replied to kat_in_GA's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I went in for my initial appointment with my surgeon they weighed and measured me and I was thrilled to finally just be "Severely Obese" with a BMI of 39. I have been on a doctor prescribed diet since April and I worked hard to get rid of the lbs pushing me over into the MO category. Today I went in for my pre-op and when they weighed me I was down 1lb since my initial appointment (10 days ago) and when the nurse handed me my little print out it said my BMI was 42. I was like WTF??????? She keyed in my height wrong. As soon as I noticed, I kind of snapped and said "you got this wrong-I'm 5'9" not 5'7" and my BMI is wrong on this printout!" I realized I came across bitchy but ya know...those are a crucial 3 points! -
approved with no date
juliansmom2003 replied to kechianyree's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
AMEN! I got approved on 9/24 and there wasn't a pre-op appointment available until 10/9. Of course, I don't get my freaking date until after that appointment (I have to sign the consent forms, etc.) It just feels like I'm at a complete standstill right now, even though my appointment is on Friday. I think I'm going to hit a support group meeting tonight to feel like this is still happening. Hang in there and keep us posted on when you get your date!!!! -
Looking for someone like me..
Jachut replied to southernbelle13's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was 38, 5ft 10 and 245lb when I got banded. i am now 150lb at 42. I lost weight quite slowly compared to some, none of this 100lb in 9 months stuff, it took me a good 2 years to lose it, but it was steady and I lost well over 100% of my "excess" taking me well below the top of the normal BMI range. I also ended up with very little loose skin. I've got enough that I feel a bit dejected about it from time to time but really, you cant tell i was ever as fat as I was. -
Well I have six little pounds to go to get to my goal weight for my daughters wedding! Tried to lose 10 lbs. but now I am down four. Working on the wedding stuff is keeping me very busy and all these babies (grandbabies) coming. I am on the go a lot. We got baby Michael Wesley last night! 8 lbs, l oz, 21 inches long, he is a little doll with a head full of hair! Now one more is on the way our little Ava Danielle, my oldest daughter is expecting and ready to go by next weekend. I have five weeks left before my youngest daughters wedding and two flower girl dresses left to make, NO PRESSURE! Everything to check and re-check. Meeting with the cake lady on Thursday again. That cake is going to be good! Blueberry flavored fondant on one layer, Orange flavored on the rest, will post photos later. Have a great day all, God Bless You.:tt2:

I was banded 1/10/08 and I'm really not that sore anymore. I'm having more trouble with the Gas!!! I can't seem to get it to pass. My shoulder and chest and back around the rib cage area are killing me!!! I went back to work yesterday. Good luck I hope you get to feeling better soon.
