    October 2018 Sleevers

I'll be hitting the year mark on the 29th. I FINALLY started feeling a bit better about a month ago. I can finally eat more than yogurt without pain/getting sick. So, SO thankful. My first few months, I was creating such good habits - cooking every night, eating healthy stuff. When I started feeling like death in February, all that went out the window because all I could eat was soft foods like yogurt, cheese, or milk. So, here I am, nearly a year out, and I have to start over trying to create the healthy habits. And for some reason it seems harder now than right after surgery, but I'll do it. Now that I can eat, my loss has slowed. I'm up and down a lot, still about 1-2# down in a month. I'm down 135 total, 114 since surgery. Lost 90% EWL and am down to a 26.7 BMI. I'm now a 12/14 (depending on the brand), down from a 24/26. But I still look super flabby. We'll see how it all shakes out now that I can actually eat.

Happy Birthday! Mine is on Sunday the 11th. I had ricotta cheese, butternut squash soup, mashed up avocado, yogurt and cream of potato soup. It has all stayed down so far I am just starting week 2 of my pureed foods.

The only way I get mine in is if I do 2 protein shakes a day with 20g+ of protein each. I always have a greek yogurt which is another 12 to 16 depending on the brand and then my other 2 meals are usually refried beans and salsa or canned chili with beans/turkey, sometimes beef. I also sometimes will have an egg with a sprinkle of cheese on it for a meal. I hope this helps some....but I have to still do the shakes to get it all in since my meals are so small.

Well, I mix 1/2 plain Greek yogurt with 1/2 flavored (lowers the sugar level to acceptable limit), and eat off that a few times or I would just get light and fit and have that. Both of those would not be good for lactose intolerance though. I don't know of any yogurt that would. Maybe you could ask your Doc about taking Lactaid to see if that helps? You would prob have to crush it, but all the dairy products really saved me when it came to getting in any protein or nutrients, so might be worth it.

asking the december and january post-op groups: have any of you had trouble with bloody noses? i got one last night while getting sick and i've neever had one before. i'd opened a can of low fat hormel turkey chili, added a little greek yogurt and cheese to it, took about three bites and was immediately sick. i know i took the 1st two bites too quickly (i'd waited too long to eat and was hungry), i didn't chew it enough and paid for it. not much more than phlem, air and bubbles came up, but the runny nose started in instantly and so did the blood. it took a little longer to stop and i still have the runny nose. not sure if i'm fighting a cold or it's a sign of something else. i've had turkey since surgery, beef and cheese as well. the only thing different was the greek yogurt. i'm not really questioning the food, it's more the bloody and runny nose. -oh, it also started me on a stupid crying jag. felt like a big baby

Thanks Nicole. Doc said to keep protein between 40-60 because I am so short and don't have so much to lose as others. I'm doing that and fluids are good too. I don't do startches very often and then mashed potatoes to help chicken go down. He said to move away from protein drinks and yogurt and more to solid protein like chicken, egg, etc. I question getting all protein if i do but we'll see. Haven't been watching sodium. I have eaten salad and veggies with no issues and am hungry a lot so not losing and fighting hunger aren't helping. I asked the dr if he was sure he did bypass!

I was on clear liquids for two days then they switched me to full liquids until the 20th which is a total of 7 days, then I will be on pureed for 3-5 weeks, next I will be on regular diet (scary to think about). I can only have 2 ounces of food an hour and that is it....eg. pudding, shakes, yogurt but I can tolerate about 6oz clear liquids in an hour before I start belching. Your body will let you know what it can tolerate.

For those interested and struggle to get protein in during the day: I am able to get 3 meals in during the day. I can't have 4-6 small as some nuts suggest. If I did that I would never get liquids in. I have breakfast which generally is Special K protein (14g protein). I've started drinking coffee and make it w a scoop of chocolate protein (before adding the protein, I add ice to cool some over 140 degrees destroys protein), 1 serving dry milk, and SF French vanilla coffee mate. (38g Protein in 12oz cup). I drink this cold between breakfast and lunch. (Total = 52g protein). Lunch is Danon light n fit yogurt, cheese stick, turkey (1 oz 4.5g protein) or ham (1 oz 4.5g protein) or almonds-1 serving (5g protein). (Total = 24 G protein for lunch.) Dinner is what ever I feel like eating to change it up some. At 630 or 7, I start on my last shake of the day, which is a syntax nectar Fuzzy Navel (2 scoops in a 20 oz cup, sipped on over a couple hours) (46g protein). When I work out I will have 1 scoop after workout and 1 scoop around 630-700. (Total = 46g protein) Without dinner added in that is about 108g of protein a day. Morning, coffee, and lunch is a routine and rarely changed up. Unless plans change then my dinner becomes my lunch, and lunch menu is my dinner. No I don't get bored with it cuz I eat different dinners. I LOVE the yogurt (various flavors) and string cheese and never get tired of those. I also love almonds. I never have to think about what I'm taking for lunch, just grab n go. That is how I get over 100g protein in a day, consistency w my breakfast and lunch, the coffee, then the shake. Remember this isn't counting dinner. So for dinner if I want I'll just eat a salad or fruit n veggies. I have become a creature of habit. Once a month, I will have a slice of pizza or as much of a slice that I can. I have also discovered these and my nut said I can eat them. I love them. Fiber Plus Protein bars. Yummy!!!! Gen :-) 12/15/12

Hippie gal, Dr Roller is more strict than most. We are not to have anything other than protein shakes, water, and broth for the first two weeks. And milk or flavored waters. At two weeks they'll tell you to start with yogurt, cottage cheese, string cheese, and then if those sit well, progress to soft foods. I specifically called his nut during week 2 to ask about creamy soups and she said no.

    August Band Crew!!!!!

Jamie, I'm sorry you're having such a rough recovery. Hang in there, it'll get better each day. I weighed myself this am and am "only" down 6lbs since surgery on 8/15. I haven't lost any weight in the last 4 days. I have no idea why this is so discouraging for me, but it is! I mean, heck, I'm only getting about 500 cals a day, shouldn't I lose SOMETHING????? I know the healing time is supposed to be about healing, not losing, but with only eating Soups, pudding, low fat yogurt, and runny oatmeal, I figured I'd lose. I think it's making me worry that, if I can't lose weight on this super-restricted diet, how am I going to lose when I progress to soft and regular foods. I have my follow up appointment on Tuesday and am paranoid they are going to be disappointed in how little weight I've lost since surgery. I know I'm being mental about this and need to just quit weighing and quit stressing, but man! I'm going to drive myself nuts at this rate. No more weighing from now on, except on Fridays!

November 09 Knockouts! Check in here POST surgery! :)

Soexcited - I'm totally with you! I only had to do one week of pre op and lost 9 pounds. Since surgery (2 weeks tomorrow) I have only lost 6. Well 6 one day. 4 the next. I have been going up and down 1-2 pounds for past week. I realize I have added mushies, but I am still eating under 900 calories a day and exercising.... so I'm not sure why I'm not losing. This is my typical day: 8 AM: Protein shake (160 cal, 15 gr protein) 11AM: 1/4 cup canned chicken w sprinkle shredded cheese or 1/4 cup chili (120 cal, 10-15 gr protein) 3PM: Protein Shake (160 cal, 15 gr protein) 6PM: 1/4 chili or 1/4 cup canned salmon (80-120 cal, 8-10 gr protein) 9PM: protein shake (160 cal, 15 gr protein) That's 710 calories and 60-70 gr of protein. I may have a 1/2 cup of oatmeal or yogurt on mornings when the shake doesnt "do it" for me, so maybe an additional 50 calories.... I think I'm going to email the nurtritionist and see what's going on. Maybe I need to UP my calories....
  14. My surgeon only restricted me to Clear Liquids while in the hospital but once discharged, he had me on phase 3 which includes full liquids, purees/mushy/soft foods like cottage cheese, yogurt, tuna. I was sleeved just over a week ago and stuck with full liquids, pureed soups, and yogurt the first week but I recently had some pureed tuna w/mayo, pureed rotisserie chicken with gravy and everything has been fine.
  15. I didn't progress through any of my food stages early. Even though I "felt" fine, who knows what was really going on on the inside. It wasn't worth risking my healing or causing a leak just so I could chew food one day sooner, you know? I actually never once pureed anything during my pureed phase. I drank my Protein shakes, had strained cream soups a LOT, and used the recipes on Shelly's page (mostly the baked ricotta) here: http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html I did a lot of cottage cheese and yogurt. And once I was allowed soft foods, a lot of scrambled eggs and soft cheeses.
  16. I didn't have a purer phase but I ate (and still eat) a lot of Greek yogurt and cottage cheese.

    October List of Surgery's

My first thing was refried beans, then I had lowfat cottage cheese, greek yogurt mixed with some unjury strawberry protein powder. I mix a little of the unflavored unjury in a lot of things. I also after I saw I could tolerate those things I had a 1/2 cup of chili. Then some tilapia. I chew everything till its creamy & eating very slowly waiting at least 1-1 1/2 min. between bites. I measure everything out in 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup so I don't eat too much. I seem to fill up faster on Chicken so I only measure out 1/4 c. A typical meal might be 1/4 c cottage cheese with 1/4 cup fish. I will drink my powerade zero 32oz with a scoop of unflavored protein powder to get more protein & still get that much of my liquids. The rest of my liquids will come from plain water. Hope this helps. instant mashed potatoes are on my third week list of foods, one of the first soft foods I can eat. I think the reasoning is that there are few truly soft foods to work with and the purpose is to get the digestive track running. Potatoes are NOT a long term option however. What else to eat for 3rd week soft foods besides mash potatoes Sent from my LGMS323 using Tapatalk

Having to lose 14-20lbs before surgery

@@BeautifulSharifah, It’s tough to lose that weight. That’s why you’re looking into weight loss surgery! But there’s hope! Have you asked your surgeon for a meal plan that can help you? Working at Chick-Fil-A is not the best, but it could be worse. Instead of thinking about what you can’t have, what about focusing on what you can? Chick-Fil-A has a bunch of junk – fried chicken sandwiches, chicken nuggets, waffle fries, Breakfast sandwiches on biscuits, and milkshakes, but they have plenty of good things, too. You can have grilled nuggets for 140 calories and 23g Protein, a side salad with light dressing for 105 calories, a Greek yogurt parfait for 230 calories, a fruit cup for 50 calories, and more. It should be possible to grab a healthy breakfast and lunch. Aside from Chick-Fil-A, you can focus on cutting back on unhealthy foods like sugary drinks, Desserts, and fried foods. You can also think about what you can have rather than what you shouldn’t. Think vegetables and lean protein, with some fruit and healthy fats, and you should be able to lose some weight. Finally, stay positive! You have a lot of reason to stick to your healthy eating plan, since the reward is weight loss surgery! Also, remember that you have plenty of time. It will probably feel like the weight is coming off so slowly, but that’s okay. You have tons of time, and can hit your goal by losing a pound a week. Good luck!

Having to lose 14-20lbs before surgery

I started my pre-op diet on August 1st. Before October 6th, I need to lose 10-15 lbs, but no more of I will be below 35 BMI. So... I've already lost 14 lbs! My NUT put me on the following diet and I've stuck to it. Breakfast: High Protein low car shake - Premier Snack: cheese stick, piece of fruit or low sugar greek yogurt. I could also choose 1/2 cup 2% cottage cheese with fruit, 1 oz. nuts or an egg. Lunch: 3-4 lean protein, 1-2 cups veggies Snack: Same options above Dinner: Same as lunch. Only eat whole grain carbs 2-3X a week. Drink a lot of Water. Once I gave up Diet Coke, the weight started falling off. For protein, I eat chicken, turkey burgers, fish, shrimp, tuna, eggs/egg beaters. I buy the pre-cooked chicken and steak fajita meet and put it on a green salad. Occasionally I do have nuts. There have been times when I've been hungry but it's really worked for me, so I keep doing it. I can't lose anymore weight so now that will be a challenge. I'll talk to my NUT but probably put a few carbs back into my diet. Good Luck!!

Having to lose 14-20lbs before surgery

I was having yogurt and fruit for Breakfast until my body decided it had enough yogurt and I couldn't gag down even a bite. I prefer food but I haven't had any ambition to make anything to bring to work with me so I grab a protein shake (Premier Protein - 30 gms protein/160 calories) to have in the morning. I ran out so today I brought no sugar added carnation breakfast which is pretty good (not as many gms of protein though). I eat protein/veggies for lunch and dinner.

So no PB problems since my issue with the mackerel, I'm pretty sure I was eating it too quickly and not chewing well enough, even though mackerel is soft and a high oil fish. Yesterday I ate some low fat refried black beans with fat free sour cream, salsa and some grated low fat swiss cheese for breakfast. Snack midmorning of fresh raspberries and some protien powder in water. Lunch I had some maple smoked salmon and some corn. Dinner I had out at a restaurant, I had one piece of bruschetta - which consisted of a small piece of toasted baguette with goat cheese and fresh tomato salsa on top, about 2 ounces of steamed salmon off of hubbies plate, and a couple of tablespoons of baked potato with a little sour cream, and a couple of slices of grilled zucchini. Then we went to a movie, I brought in two small sticks of turkey pepperoni and a couple of small cans of V8 juice for movie snacks. Then before bed I had a sillhouette yogurt drink with my meds. I had great restriction, was full on my meals, no discomfort, no hunger. Today so far I had couscous salad with tomatoes, onions, lemon, garlic, garbanzo beans and mung beans about half a cup and half a cup of cottage cheese for breakfast. then for snack had about a 1/4 cup of mixed nuts - cashews, almonds, pecans. The key for me seems to be that I can handle even toasted bread when I have restriction, or corn, or...? the key is little bitty bites, chew very well, and take my time. I do try to eat my food moist though most of the time, I have fat free sour cream, fresh salsa, lemon juice, low fat hummus, low fat mayo, even some guacamole, in the fridge, and I use them as condiments on food to help break it down smoother when I chew. Made water goal again yesterday, and today is off to a good start as well. I'm super happy to be having restriction!!!!!!!! It was amazing to have such a small meal in the restaurant last night, a little taste of everything hubby's entre had, and splitting the bruschetta appetizer with him, and feeling totally satisfied! Hoping my restriction stays where it's at over the next week, as I know it can shift tighter or looser in the first week, sometimes even two weeks. Keeping my fingers crossed! Keep up the great work everyone with working on the water. I'm tracking mine on fitday (I have the home PC version) and I really love the program, I've entered in my multivitamin and my other supplements, and I was amazed to find even with the careful focus I have on healthy eating, and taking a multivitamin, taking calcium, taking b vitamins, and some other supplements, that I've still been low in vitamin E and in zinc many days, so I have to pick up a some of those. I love that it calculates your levels of everything and so I can take a supplement, or not, as I need it, or I can search for a food high in that nutrient and have it as a snack. Okay, enough out of me! XO Leila

You can transition to a a full liquid diet first (creamier soups, milk, yogurt, hot cereals, coffee, tea, juice, SF/FF ice cream, SF/FF puddings, etc) then proceed to the soft diet per your doctors instructions. Melissa Lea

Ok...I need help. My instructions are clear liquids(juice, jello, broth). As of today I can add yogurt and protein drinks. I know they say SIP your drinks and only have 4 oz. at a time, but everyone also says liquids go right through. So, why do we have to sip and limit the amount of water, for example? Am I being stupid(highly likely)? I admit I have swallowed gulps, not sips of water and I had no problem. I just can't see getting my daily water intake in by sipping small amounts. I'm only a week out, so of course I don't wanna stretch my pouch or hurt my band, so someone please explain it so I understand.
