  1. Seems like I do a great job at work sticking to my healthy eating habits - greek yogurt for breakfast; P3, tuna or chicken salad for lunch; protein bar in the afternoon. Then I get home in the evening and the craving for sweets intensifies times ten! I'm sneaking handfuls of cereal, eating my daughter's granola bars, etc. I have the calories to spare usually but I need to spend them on healthier choices instead of pure sugar!

    Pre-op Diet?

I just started my 7-day pre-op diet today. I have been instructed to have at least 100 grams of Protein and NO MORE than 75 grams of carbs each day. I'm allowed to have creamy Soups, yogurt, broths... and as many calorie free beverages (water, crystal lite, other sugar free beverages) as I want. I started my day w/ Isopure (grape frost) 40g protein no carbs. I have V8 Garden Broccoli soup planned for lunch. I have unjury unflavored protein, that I plan to add to smoothies, and my soup at dinner. Then end each day with another 40g protein Isopure. At least this is the plan, I'm sure I'll grow tired of this. However, I'll try to remember what I tell my kids "nothing worth having is easy".

    Pre-op Diet?

My doctor requires the following: 7-10 days before Surgery: Follow a low sugar (less than 16gm/sugar/serving) and sugar gree liquid diet which may include fruit juices, Jello, popsicles, low fat milk, yogurt, and Protein shakes (e/g/ carb solutions, atkins, muscle milk, whey protein). He doesn't require you to buy from him, which I appreciate. I would rather buy what I like from who I like. I will have a combination of Isopure clear zero carb, unjury (which I heard people like and I just ordered), pre-made muscle milk in chocolate from costco (convenient to take with me, doesn't taste too bad), and anything else I find appealing. 5-10 days isn't too bad, but then there is the weeks after too. Oh well, I can do it...

    Hungry All The Time

As Mis says stomach growling does not = hunger. Mine growls all the time. Yogurt and almonds are slider foods they will not sustain you for very long. You also say that you are so tight that you are having a hard time getting anything down. I think that you may be too tight and may need some Fluid taken out. That might sound counterproductive but then you would probably be able to eat more satisfying foods such as chicken and meat that should sustain you for longer. Contrary to popular belief tight is not the best way for a band to be.

    CONSTANTLY HUNGRY :(((

I had to switch from Nexium to Prilosec in the beginning. It made a world of difference. Also being hungry is not a bad thing. Just make sure to keep the right foods within arms length. I eat all day long. Everyone swears i eat more now that i am skinny. I always have somethng in my hand...Yogurt..Banana..Protein shake...it will get easier!

Are You Really Full?? (With Other Randomness)

Congratulations on your decision. I was banded on May 29th and have lost 28 lbs so far. Two things I can tell you related to your question is #1, patience is key, and #2, the amount of weight you lose is dependent on how much effort you put into the entire process. Let me explain both. Patience - it has taken me 3 months to get to the "sweet spot" where the band has just the right amount of restriction. I can eat enough food to be healthy without vomiting it up, but feel full faster and stay full longer and am losing weight. I had several fills and one unfill, then another fill to get to the right spot. Effort - it is not a magic mechanism. You have to eat the right foods, in the right order, exercise, drink tons of liquids, etc. You must follow the instructions your Dr. gives you to a tee. Example: I could probably still eat 2 big slices of pizza even though I am banded. Pizza is really greasy and slides right through the band. If I eat 3 oz of lean mean, 1/2 cup of vegetables and a little yogurt, I'm full for at least 4-5 hours. Huge calorie difference. It really is a lifestyle change. You have to change the way you eat for life. You have to be in control, almost to the point of being obsessive, at least until you've adopted good habits for good. It also helps to attend support group meetings, journal your foods and exercise. People who do those things are more successful than those who don't. The person who only lost 20 lbs maybe didn't follow through on fills, getting to the right restriction zone, and could have snacked on foods throughout the day, ate the wrong types of foods, etc. There are many ways you can fail, but you CHOOSE to fail. And to ultimately answer your question, yes I do get the "ok stop eating now feeling" but I will say it is more subtle than I had expected. It could be different for different people. Good luck on your journey, You won't regret it, I don't!

    calorie intake

I was banded on May 12th and the first 4 weeks I couldn't even eat what they said to eat because sometimes it was to much. My doctor says you should be eating about 800 calories. I have noticed this week that I am getting hungry between lunch and dinner. I am going for my first fill on June 27th and I am hoping that takes care of that. I have a Protein shake for Breakfast. Lunch I eat a slice of ham (2 oz) and a slice of cheese (1/2 oz) with 2 crackers, a quarter cup of yogurt and quarter cup of fruit, or 1/2 a cup of turkey chili with 2 crackers, dinner is usually 2 oz of fish or chicken, 1/2 cup of potatoe or Pasta and a vegetable.
  8. I love the Slimfast Ultra, High Protein creamy vanilla blend in: 1/3 c. frozen blueberries 1/3 c. plain nonfat greek yogurt 1 packet splenda I also will blend in 1 scoop benefiber (does a body good)
  9. Protein packed fruit smoothie/shake: I have fruits like strawberries, raspberries, peaches, blueberries, cherries, blackberries, pineapple and mango on hand in the freezer so I use whatever sounds good that day. 1/2 cup frozen fruit 1/2 cup of skim milk 2 - 3 tablespoons of plain fat free yogurt 1 scoop of protein powder (I use Pure Nutrition's pure vanilla bean whey protein...1 scoop has 115 cal, 0 fat, 2 carb, 26 g protein) It only takes 10 - 15 seconds in a magic bullet blender to blend. You can also add honey or a sugar substitute/sweetner if you like it extra sweet. You can also use flavored yogurt if you don't like plain yogurt.
  10. I did an experiment with making a Protein shake and it was a real winner. 1 scoop strawberry Champion Whey (low carb) 120 cal, 1.5g fat, 3.5 carbs, 23g protein, 3.5 fiber 8 oz skim milk 1 individual container Fiber One Strawberry yogurt (optional) 80 cal, 4g protein, 19 carbs, 5g fiber frozen strawberries (4) 1/2 banana (optional) It was very good and tastes like a Strawberry smoothie without the banana yet filled with protein. With the banana taste like a Strawberry/Banana smoothie.
  11. Hi. I just started my pre-op diet 3 days ago and i've already lost seven pounds. I've been using SECURE protein shakes (pina colada flavor) with one serving of yogurt blended with ice and whole milk. I LOVE IT. You can buy some on Hsn.com or Qvc.com but dont get peanut butter flavor. yuck. GoodLuck with your journey
  12. Hi ~ This is my first time to post. I was banded on Nov 29, 07. My only complaint is my mouth has been broken out for about 2 1/2 weeks. My lips are swollen and red also inside my mouth are a few small blisters. I thought maybe an allergic reaction to the fruit juices, so I stopped that. Maybe the vitamins.... stopped them. No change... maybe yeast? I'm trying the over the counter capsules for that now. I crush a zoloft and celebrex and mix with yogurt. These aren't fever blisters either. Any more ideas what could be happening??? Of course, "It's the holidays", is my only excuse for not going to the Dr yet.. Any suggestions or advice? I don't want to be seen :think ~~ Thank you !

    Feeling Discouraged :(

Amy, my 18 yr old was banded with me (mom) on the same day and her biggest issue in feeling weak and bad is that she is not drinking the protein shakes. I went to GNC and purchased the chocolate Syntha 6 Protein powder and mix it with skim milk and it is pretty good stuff. If you drink 3 per day, one before you leave the house and at lunch and dinner you will feel so much better. During the 14 days, start walking, eat yogurt, sugar free pudding and some broth and you will make it thru. With your busy schedule, carry a jar of bouilon cubes to go in hot water for your broth. This helps with the hunger and tastes really good when you have had nothing else. Hope this helps ya..
  14. Hi all, I am 5 months out and have lost 88lbs which is AWESOME. The whole time though I have been constipated, trying EVERYTHING just to be able to "go" every other day or so but nothing has worked. So I have been using laxatives every weekend to "clean myself out" as I work Monday thru Friday and can''t take them during the week.So unfortunately I can go like 6 days without a BM which is not good. An issue I'm having is the past few weeks, I am not losing like I was the first 5 months and I'm going out of my mind! Example: I weigh myself in the morning when I get up and say my weight is 177.4lb.s. OKay, fine. So I eat a 6oz. yogurt and a few mini rice cakes. And weigh myself say a half hour later (just for this purpose) and my weight goes up to 178.2lb.s!!! This is NOT normal for me! Usually after eating that, my weight wouldn't move at all, or go up maybe an ounce. But now it goes way up, even if I drink a protein shake or water! What's the deal??? Is it because of the constipation and being "FOS" literally?? (I also walk 2 miles a day on top of a very active 8 hour job.) Another example is yesterday, I weighed 177.6lbs in the morning. I had 2 protein shakes, water and 8oz. oatmeal throughout the whole day. I weighed myself that night around 10pm and my weight was 179.2lbs! Now I know weight fluctuates during the day and that's fine, but this is NOT NORMAL for me. Can someone PLEASE help me figure this out?? I'm losing faith in myself and having any more weight loss and I have 47lbs still to lose! PLEASE HELP! DESPERATE! thank you Source: 5 months and HOPELESS! Please help!
  15. I can't stand sugar free jello...so, no, I didn't eat that. I had protein shakes, pureed soup, pudding, yogurt, and sugar free popsicles. Every surgeon's pre-op diet is different, so be sure to follow your surgeon's instructions.

    Pre-Op Diet?

My pre-op diet started today 3/18 anc consists of Bariatric Advantage shake for breakfast and lunch. If I want a AM snack it is to be 6 oz tomato juice or low cal vit c fruit juice. At night I can make dinner or some of the low card ww meals, lean cruisine, etc. PM snack can be 1 oz cheese and fruit, or yogurt and nuts, or another protein shake. I was a bit hungry come dinner time tonight but I think this will be liveable. Only 26 more shakes still surgery.

How are you getting to 1000/1200 cals a day?

My doc doesn't limit me to 1/2 cup at each meal. He said if I am still hungry, eat a little more. I have to learn to listen to my body, which is quite challenging, but it is working out. Sometimes I eat a cup, sometimes (but rarely) I eat only 1/4 cup. My body knows what it needs. The other thing is, I often will add unflavored Protein powder to Soups, yogurt, oatmeal, etc. to boast my protein intake. You can get very good unflavored protein from unjury. One scoop adds 21 g. protein, 90 cal., and 0 grams of fat. And because you add it to food, it is staying in your upper stomach longer, as opposed to drinking it down, like Mamadot said. HTH!

  22. I cant allay your fears about the problems continuing now that you've had an issue, I guess you can only be positive about the fact that the band is in position, and that's one major problem that hasnt occurred. As to success with not gaining whilst unfilled - well that is doable. I was unfilled for over 6 months and then took 3 months to get back to my normal level and I didnt gain weight. Well.... that's not strictly true, but I only regained weight that I lost - about 8 lb - I got way way too skinny from being absolutely ultra careful and exercising like a maniac whilst having chemo. I regained that weight, but I'm still 10lb lighter than when I got unfilled last year. I just continued with what I knew worked and whilst I definitely at more with no fill, I made sure that "more" was made up things like salads, fruit and wholegrain bread - all light, low calorie, no fat kinda foods, and kept my portions of Protein and fat foods at banded size. I lost significant weight doing that as whilst I'd had fill, I'd slipped into a slider food routine and was eating a lot of calorie dense foods like cookied, too much full fat yogurt, Soups which I didnt hesitate to add cream to, all that sort of thing. Once I cut that out and replaced with salads, fruit and bread, I said bye bye to about 20lb remarkably quickly - and I was at a BMI of 22 to begin with! My routine is generally an hour of hard cardio about five days a week and about three strenght sessions (sand bag circuit training or Body Pump classes using pretty heavy weights). Chemo/radiation and a big surgery in which I was given an ileostomy helped to keep that weight down, but a lot of it was my hard work. It can be done! And at the very least, its much better to only gain a little than a lot. Dont just give up whatever you do.

    Omg Starving.......help!!!

I am sorry that you are having troubles. Are you allowed to eat non fat greek yogurt or cottage cheese? My Dad is also a diabetic and has trouble keeping his blood sugar up while sleeping. His solution is to eat 3/4 cup of cottage cheese with fruit or some other topping right before he goes to bed. As for broths- have you tried straining broth based soups? You can get all the flavor of the soup without the solids. I really like low fat broth based tortilla soup. Num Num.

Some Needed Input On The Mushy Stage

My Mushies Menu consists of Mashed Potatoes with low-fat gravy, cottage cheese, natural applesauce, baby foods, scrambled eggs, hot cereals, refried Beans & tuna and along with those I continue to include the Soups and yogurt. Thank goodness for the soup and yogurt, it made the full liquids very bearable and was not bad at all. Today was my first day for the Mushies and couldn't wait to wake up this morning to have some Eggs! dinner I was satisfied with the potatoes and gravy. I would also love any suggestions to add to this phase. Not sure about the rest of you, but after one week of pureed foods I move on to Soft foods for a week. Not quite sure what the difference is yet between the two. I'll meet with the Dietician on Monday to review.

    Restriction After Almost 4 Yrs???

Sometimes I am very sensitive after a fill and it takes me almost a week before I am able to really tolerate solid foods with out feeling extremely full or Pbing a little. I have been very sensitive to the band and my fills every since I have had it, I have only had 3 fills in two years. If you can pass water without difficulty I would give it a few days and maybe just do some protein shakes, yogurt and other mushy foods. You may have some swelling since it has been a while since you had a fill. Good luck, just make sure you are taking in fluids so not to get dehydrated.
