    Surgeon recommends sleeve not bypass

You can still have great success with sleeve and there are a lot of advantages to it. GERD is the main disadvantage, but it sounds like your test results have led your surgeon to believe that's not a huge risk for you. Personally, I never had GERD with any regularity pre-op except when I was at my heaviest weight and eating horribly. I do have GERD post-op, but it's nothing that can't be controlled with a PPI, so it hasn't been a big issue for me. I think it was worth the trade-offs to not have bypass. I'd rather take w PPI every day than have to deal with malabsorption leading to malnutrition or some sort of late-stage complication in the unused portion of my stomach or any of my joins. Just much less long-term risk associated with sleeve.

    Time off work

@Reina73 you have a desk job. it might be a little easier to return to the office if you are not too tired. if you can financially afford it/and time is given to you - i suggest one - two weeks if you are feeling "ok", only a little tired. - BUT don't push yourself,it's not worth it. maybe go back at first taking 1/2 days then full days. See what works for you. i have said this before, in my case i returned to "work" the second i was home. i am happily retired☺️ good luck w/bypass next month. speedy recovery kathy
  3. I had my initial meeting with my surgeon and he told me I would only lose 40-50lbs with lapband, he was trying to encourage me to have gastric bypass. He has only done 30 some lb surgeries and the other surgeons at this hospital have also only done 30 some. This hospital just started doing surgeries last Dec. I know the lb is just a tool, I get it, I understand that. But could someone give me hope that I will lose more? I am at 243 now, was at 250 at my 1st visit the bariatric center. Thanks for all of your help!

    August 5

Having a band to sleeve revision. After 9 months of waiting to meet I durance requirements for revision I'm finally just 4 short weeks from surgery. I'm enjoying my last 2 weeks of solids before getting back on the pre-op mostly liquid diet. It's going to be nice to have the month of August off to recover. Who is with me?

    June 2019!!! Surgery Siblings!!!

I got my approval today and my surgery date is June 3 and I am so excited. I wanted a May date but oh well at least I got an approval. I was sleeved in 2015 however it was unsuccessful. I am determined for this bypass to work. I wanted the bypass the first time but the surgeon suggested the sleeve. This is the last and final time can’t get another revision after this but I wouldn’t one another one.
  6. Ok, see? This is why I need reading comprehension lessons. I read this title as "Dumping. Masturbation. After Bypass Surgery." And I was like, finally! Now this is gonna be a fun one in the General Discussion Area!
  7. For some reason and I'm not sure what it is there is a perception out there that a sleeve is an easy or minor surgery compared to a bypass. Let's think about that. With a VSG your surgeon takes a large portion of your stomach cuts it off and throws it away. With an RNY your surgeon rearranges the way your stomach is connected but doesn't throw anything away. So they are both MAJOR surgeries. A VSG is a restrictive only procedure. An RNY is both restrictive and malabsorptive. For me after having had one procedure that only gave " restriction" I am quite happy to consider a procedure that gives both. I don't see taking daily multivitamins as an issue. There is a high risk of reflux with a VSG. Dumping - it's not something I'm looking forward to but it may just be what I need. If eating chocolate or sugary foods causes me to feel like crap then I am a lot more likely to not eat them. Not all bypass patients get dumping but for the ones that do it may be just the thing that they need to help them stay on track. So my advice would be LISTEN TO YOUR SURGEON. If he advises 1 procedure over the other keep an open mind and ask lots of questions as to why he thinks it would be better. If you are willing to trust him with your life then you need to be able to trust his judgement .

    Lap Band Deaths...

I've been online since 2002 in banding communities, and I've heard of one instance where a band surgery was followed closely by death. And from what I understand, the patient ignored significant symptoms that were, in any case, the result of a surgical error (she had a leak, somehow). Under normal circumstances, banding surgery is among the safest that there is. The patient's health pre-surgery is most important, especially as it relates to the risk of general anaesthesia, but the surgery itself is no big deal at all. They're mixing up bypass and banding. No question.

    I am just so... OMG...

I CAN'T believe they would do that to you. That is the most retarded thing I ever heard. I've heard of "office parties" but to have a party for someone having bypass????? This person should be focusing on his journey and not telling everyone. Won't he be disappointed when every day the office is asking..."so, how much have you lost" or "are you allowed to eat that". SECOND, whoever organized this party has alot of balls to assume that you had the surgery and blindly lead you into this trap. You didn't even have the same surgery and this person didn't ask you ahead of time and try to get more details????? I still can't believe it. I would have been sooooo mad:cursing: but too embarrased to say anything. After you had a chance to calm down, did you confront anyone?

    CIGNA requirements HELP

I have Cigna through my employer and it all depends on how the policy is written regarding Bariatric surgery. My policy shows one thing when you look it up online but when anything is submitted it gives not covered by policy. Putting my medical billing & coding to work i did little digging and found that it actually was in the underwriting of the policy that it excludes weight loss surgery. Yes i have been under my PCP care for health issues related to my weight along with weight management (meds/diet/etc) my surgery is also a medical necessity as i have OSA, NAFLD, & PCOS. Even after both my PCP & OBGYN gave the "medical necessity" insurance still will not cover any form of bypass surgery and has left me to figure it out on my own. After lots of medical practice locations/surgeon research, i decided to proceed with having a Vertical Sleeve which will be done by one of the surgeons at Blossom Bariatrics (fast track program). They will utilize my insurance for all the Pretesting labs, stress test, upper Endoscopy but i have to cover the surgery procedure part out of pocket. Between my husband and i we were able to obtain a medical loan to assist in the remaining amount we needed and my surgery date was scheduled for week of Sept 7th so my countdown is on!!!!!

    I am just so... OMG...

I had a supervisor once who told me I HAD to put the type of surgery I was having on my leave request. I had never heard such a thing and put my hysterechtomy on there. She even went so far as to tell me I had to put whether I was having it vaginally or abdominally since one would require more leave time..... I was flabbergasted. I worked for a school district. I later had problems with her, and when I was in the superintendents office discussing these problems, that topic came up. He became purple with rage and said that was in no way true. He asked for my file, and there it all was, big as Dallas!! She got in SO MUCH trouble...... According to him the word surgery was all that was required. At the job I'm at now, I didn't tell ANYONE what surgery I was having done. When asked, I just said I had to correct some stomach problems. Months later when I had lost a lot of weight, I got invited to an office party for another department. It was a "good luck" party.... I didn't know the honoree, and had no intention of going. I kept getting pressured to go, and was puzzled by it. After several people encouraged me to go, I went. It turned out they were having a luncheon for a guy having bypass surgery the next day. (???? luncheon???) Anyway, they take me over to him and introduce us. Fine. Then one of them interrupts the party and announces to the ENTIRE ROOM that since I had the surgery, they thought it would be nice if I talked to him to calm his fears, and answer any questions he might have, and maybe act as a buddy for him when he returned. I was dumbfounded. Speechless. Everyone was staring at me. So much for privacy!!!! I was so angry I couldn't move. I pulled the man over to the conrner, congratulated him, explained I didn't have bypass, I had a lap band and apologized for the idiots that had invited me. He was very aware how uncomfortable I was, and apologized to me. He was actually mortified. I left immediately. He's been a nice friend ever since, but I still want to knock the teeth out of the bimbos that set that whole scene up!!
  12. When I went to the doctor last for a case of bronchitis, I had a huge shock when I stepped on the scale -- 204!!! I'm 4'11. That gives me a BMI of 41.2. I've been maintaining at 170-180 for about the last 3-4 years. My highest weight ever was 244 when I was 19 and on birth control pills. When I wasn't in a relationship I decided to just throw them away -- they were costing me money and it wasn't like I was in danger of getting pregnant... my allegedly underactive thyroid got into the normal range within a month of coming off of them. I got down to 145 over a year, then have crept back up. The thing that changed me from the 170-180 up to this was dislocating my kneecap nearly two years ago. I've had reduced activity -- it still hurts to walk through Wal-Mart. When I saw the scale go up over 200, I wanted to cry, and not just for physical pain. I know to some I don't have a huge weight problem. People say I "carry it well". They don't want to offend me, I'm sure. And I even admit it's not as bad as it used to be. But I'm terrified. My mother had gastric bypass at 265 lbs, she now weighs 120 but has had major complications -- says she doesn't regret it a bit tho. Four of her cousins had it. My paternal grandmother should have had it, but at the time Medicaid didn't cover it. She died in a nursing home at 62, weighing 600 lbs needing double knee replacements but too heavy for them to do them. I don't want to live that life. I don't know if I have severe comorbidities because I've not checked. I haven't had a cholesterol test, sleep study, EKG, anything else like that -- almost too afraid to. I do have asthma and my knee, but I have Aetna insurance and I know those don't qualify. But am I crazy to be thinking about the Lap-Band when I'm only 29 and only a 41.2 BMI? (If the pre-surgical diet takes me down much, and it doesn't take much at 4'11, I might not meet Aetna's qualifications for the surgery from what I can see....)

    Reset???

We don't have pouches.....we've got sleeves, whereas gastric bypass patients have stomach pouches with simple stomas. The 5-day pouch reset was thought up by a quasi-journalist who regained several years after her bypass surgery. It is designed for bypass folks, not sleeved people. You can certainly complete a pouch reset with your sleeve. However, it will be ineffective without a permanent lifestyle change. To bust your stall, start doing the things that resulted in your 90+ pound post-op weight loss. Stop doing the things that have resulted in your current stall/plateau. Good luck to you. You got this.

  15. My BMI starting was 38. I am 26 yrs old and have been overweight almost my entire life. I have been in the 300's and I have been in the 180's and all the numbers in-between. My surgeon put me on a liquid Protein diet on Sept. 26th and he said I will lose a lot of weight. I still don't have a surgery date yet and I have no idea when it might be, the weight loss office thinks it should be really soon. As soon as I'm done with the pre-op stuff. He mentioned that many people lose so much weight that they ultimately decide to opt-out of the surgery. I WILL NOT be one of those people. Even if my surgery isn't until early next year. I always gain my weight back, I feel like I need a fresh start with a stomach that isn't all super stretched out and able to take in massive amounts of food at a time. Even if my BMI is 30 I will get the surgery. I know in my heart this is the right decision for me. It's the ending of a horrible "fat girl/unhealthy" journey and the start of a new "skinny me/healthy" journey. Knowing that in the end I will get this surgery is helping me to succeed more too. I too agree that you should prolly go to Mexico to have it done since you will most likely be qualified there. Do what you think you should. When I was 16 I wanted gastric bypass and my whole family laughed in my face. They said I would be laughed out of the office cuz I wasn't fat enough. My dad simply told me put down the fork and pick up the weights. Yeah well here I am 26 years old and still struggling with my weight. Guess parents don't always know best. Most people also don't look at me and think I am obese but I think I am lol. I hate the way I look in clothes, I don't even like looking in the mirror anymore. I have a closet full of clothes ranging from 14-24. Since I have had my daughter in 09 I have really put myself aside to focus on her. Well now she is two and I am ready to do something for me. Something that will make me better on the inside and out. This surgery isn't the answer for everyone. Make sure you research research research lol.
  16. I am having my revision done Thursday. I am sooo ready be done with the arm/shoulder and port pain. Surgeon says I can have a light Breakfast tomorrow then Clear liquids until midnight. If anyone has any advice or info I would appreciate it. Please say a prayer for me. Thanks
  17. I agree and think you should write some letters. That's wrong. My initial doc, prior to band surgery, I thought would NEVER be on board but I needed HIM to refer me to the Bariatric Dept! I asked him and he approved the request, sent the referral that day. I was shocked! As I was finishing the program, he left and I got a new doc. I needed his signature on the FINAL reports for the go ahead. My first meeting with him was for this! He was happy to do it! Now I've got a PCP whose a knucklehead! He's very young and the type who works out a lot, played football all thru HS and College, still play pick up games w/his friends, etc. He think you can do ANY thing if you only stop eating and exercise! UGH! If I had to go thru him to get my revision, it wouldn't be happening. He is against WLS, says it doesn't work (just look at you), etc. Same ol' song and dance that most of us hear at some point over the years. I can't change docs unless I want to drive an hour to see someone even when Im sick. As soon as one of the other docs open up, I'm switching. Tho I do have to say, in his defense, that there have been a couple of times where I really needed him and he came thru for me.
  18. I am pre-op but I chose DS. I have read everything I can on it (dsfacts.com is fantastic). I am also on this forum and others to see what "real" people are saying. I chose the DS for several reasons: 1) after a couple of years the RNY looses it's malabsorption. That is why some see regain. 2) the percentage of getting rid of comorbidities is higher with the DS. 3) higher percentage of excess weight is lost and kept off with DSers. 4) I only want to have surgery once. I have seen so many RNYers post they are having surgery again to revise to the DS. I have also seen banders and sleevers getting sleeved or resleeved. (This is when I just want to yell go with the DS and get it done right.)
  19. First post on this new site. I was revised from band to DS in November of '12. My pre surgery weight was 293 and now I am 189. so, 104 pounds in 14 months. I would not change a thing. I did alot of research and I also had a friend have the surgery before me so I was well informed going in. I knew I needed a surgery that was going to give me the hard lesson. I NEED to have consequences to my actions to teach me what I can and cannot eat. It's not that I don't have a brain, I know what Is and isn't good for me. I knew that with just the sleeve, my stomach could stretch and I would be right back where I was after a while. The malabsorption is something I really needed. Yes, we have loads of Vitamins to take but its better than high blood pressure pills, cholesterol meds, antidepressants, and just the overall PAIN from being so heavy. I could have lost more by now if I had stuck to a strict diet but I had this surgery knowing that in the past (on my own and with the lap band) that anyone can lose weight on their own with a strict diet. I did not want to feel like I was on a diet for the ret of my life. (somehow I don't think this is sounding right to some people but I am trying to explain). I knew it is not a miracle cure. The head hunger will always be there. Ugh, I am rambling. I will sum it up by saying I have zero regrets. Would do it a million times over.

port revision and Six Flags Death

@Maddysgram Do you have something other than LB? My revision is for the LB port. @SolracSpree the death is still under investigation, here is one article if you want to read what happened. http://www.dallasnews.com/news/metro/20130719-texas-giant-to-remain-closed-as-six-flags-investigates-woman-s-fall.ece

    Too expensive in States

Sorry, I'm staying away from the middle east for now! I couldn't have afforded surgery in the states either and went to Mexico. Turns out it was a HUGE mistake. But thats not my point here. What I do want to say is that after talking to Dr Billy in Ventura California, he told me of how the surgery is quickly becomming more affordable here in the good old U.S of A. The BMI requirement is being revised and the overall surgery is much more affordable. I guess Drs here realize that they need to compete with Mexico etc. The big cost is Inamed charging an arm and leg for the stupid band. You know as well as I do that it probably costs them $3.50 in parts and labor. Glad things are working out for you. Christine

    Visual affirmations

I always thought I wouldn't either until the band became useless in my body and I had to pull out plan B. I know none of the bandsters who eroded were happy to have their stomachs cut through. Most of us who are obese have a stomach that is incredibly stretched out. When they removed part of it (which I'd rather have than have a blind stomach (RNY) hanging out there that anything can happen to, and can't be scoped) all they really did was make it a normal skinny person size. (Not trying to convince you or the like, just something for anyone who feels this way to think about). I don't know much about ounces, but I know I can eat a lunch size lean cuisine, or a whole pb&J, or about a 4 inch sub, more than when I was banded, and I feel genuinely full. In the end, I'm happy, and thats what really matters to each of us. It is wonderful to have choices, especially when your first when didn't work out. I'd venture to say that the plastic surgery issue isn't the whole reason you choose banding over bypass...and honestly when I had lost 105 pounds with the band I had the same amount of loose skin as I have now, with a 105 lb bypass loss. Experts still fight over if slow vs. fast weight loss has anything to do with it. Back to the original topic.....Sorry for the HIJACK!
  24. I have been thinking about talking to my doctor about being referred to lapband surgery. My fear is that he will say, "You aren't big enough." It's true that I only weigh around 210. But I am also only 5'3". My BMI is 37 and I am starting to develop health problems. I have PCOS, high cholesterol and triglycerides, exercise-induced asthma, and prediabetes. I have made numerous attempts to lose weight, all with no lasting success. I see all these posts from people that weighed 300+ pounds when they had surgery, and I really wonder if I am making too much of my weight. And then I think that if I take care of it now, I won't get to that point. I won't have full-blown diabetes or heart disease (both of which are very prominent in my family). I won't have to have a double knee replacement like my mom did. Or triple/quadruple bypasses like my uncle and one of my grandfathers. Or die of a heart attack like my other grandfather. So yeah, I have no idea what to think. I am caught between thinking this is the best thing that I can do and thinking that I should wait until I weigh more and have worse problems.

    I'm getting scared

Thanks for the encouragement, I may need you guys to get me thru this week. I am trying not to let my family know how nervous I am. They all think that I am crazy as it is. Not for the surgery, cause my sister and daughter have had gastric bypass, but for going to Mexico to have it done and going by myself. I think now I am focused on learning about fills. Any good info?
