    Concern and fear

it's not all programs - they actually served me Jello in the hospital! In addition, she's three months out....not just out of surgery. At three months out, people are eating solid food.

It’s likely you need some more calories. Based on the more popular shakes you are getting 450-480 calories from those three shakes. I’d add one more to the routine. Four would let you drink every four hours for those 12 hours opposed to 5-6. Id also get something like propel that has some electrolytes to supplement. When I’ve done other low calorie/fat diets I’d have pickle juice shots to combat headaches.

    Losing weight except Belly!!

LOL... You're two weeks out and you're expecting your stomach to be tiny? In addition to what everyone else said, your stomach may still be swollen from the surgery process itself. I am 9 months out and my stomach still sticks out compared to what I expected for the size I wear (medium/10). Like others have said, it may be that it will always be where I carry excess weight and it may be that there's some excess skin in the mix.

    Awful smelling stool and gas

My first few weeks home, I could not deal with protein shakes at all. The doctor had me on pureed boiled chicken that was boiled in chicken stock (watch for additives and sugar - avoid!). Keep carbs under 20g. Konsyl is a no-sugar all-pysillum fiber that you can put in water mixed with a flavor packet and drink. Start with half or a quarter of recommended tsp amount of fiber. GasX or equivalent (not the chewables) is a must. Those bubbles come from your microbiome adjusting to your new situation. I also keep matches in my home bathroom. My place of employment has more people sensitive to perfumes and sprays so I avoid using those. If I have to be present at a work situation, I just keep carbs very low for the day. Each day you are experimenting with more foods, you will find yourself able to tolerate more things that played havoc on your system in the first 4-6 weeks. Don't give up on those foods. Just treat them like the little gas-bombs they might be

    2 weeks post op

too much fat will make you have the orange explosions in the potty, and too many carbs will make your insides cry with gas pains and the resulting smells are noxious (combined with orange explosions, be careful.. jus' sayin'). With a DS, it's protein first. I could tolerate Bariwise cream of chicken protein soup, but not any bouillon broths. Not even store bought brands. Everyone is different, but the average amount of protein a DS'r absorbs is 60% of intake. To reach the amounts the body typically needs, 130-150g of protein should be the goal per day (unless otherwise indicated by doctor). P.S. (edit) It took me about 6 weeks to reach that goal and I am still falling short of it. I had another doctor botch my DS in 2010. I had a revision with corrected limb length on April 18, 2022.

My surgery is on the 20th. My pre-surgery diet is 2 weeks of 2 protein shakes and one low carb, high protein meal, then the day before surgery and 3 days after is clear liquids only. At that point I can start having 3 protein shakes a day for 2 weeks. Then a pureed diet for another 2 weeks. After that it can be more normal textured food as long as it is cut well, not dry and chewed thoroughly. They said the meals should be mostly protein and then non starchy vegetables can be added in,

    Concern and fear

Maybe not every program/surgery is the same, and I don't know which surgery you had ... but I'm extremely concerned they allowed you jello right out of surgery. My program (and most others I've seen) require at LEAST a week of pure liquid and continue with phases for increasing food textures and quantity to allow proper healing of the stomach and to prevent staple tears and whatnot. Eating a consistency of food before your body is ready can cause extreme pain you are feeling. It could be a stricture as others have stated, but I'm just stuck on, and appalled at, the speed with which they had you eating soft solids. Just my 2 cents.

I’m a week out from surgery and just wanted to share my progress. I’ve lost 9 lbs since my surgery date, which makes sense since I’m eating less than 400 calories a day! It’s definitely easier on this side than it was on the pre-op side, since my body literally cannot eat the things it used to. It’s been an adjustment getting used to the physical limitations and sensations that come along with something as simple as taking a single pill, but seeing quick weight loss is very rewarding. I’m still on full liquids, but I switch to soft foods on Sunday, and I cannot wait to have an egg!
  9. So this is a very interesting concept! So you were only eating the 4 ounce meal that are recommended type diet for that prior five-weeks? COuld you please explain this a little more? Thanks!

    Caffeine/ coffee

I know I can't have caffeine for 2 weeks before and after, but I can have decaffeinated coffee and tea during that time.

    Things I learned today…

Somewhat related - for a few weeks before i had my surgery, I watched what my female co-workers were eating when they were having lunch in the employee break room. There were a couple of them who ate what I would have called at the time a "normal" lunch. For example, and sandwich, a bag of chips, and a couple of cookies. But almost everyone else ate these tiny lunches. A thing of yogurt and an apple. Half a sandwich and a container of baby carrots. Yogurt and half a bagel. I came to the conclusion that this is basically how most normal, never-been-obese women ordinarily eat (unless they're going out for an occasional restaurant lunch, of course), and that those who ate the more substantial lunches were probably pretty active or blessed with great metabolism. It was pretty eye-opening.

    Stall and brain

Unfortunately the closer to your goal, the slower your rate of weight loss. Some weeks it is like the scale barely moves like a stall. It can be very frustrating. A it if what happening is you are eating closer to what your body actually needs to function & you are nearing your new body set point (the weight your body is happy with). A thing to consider is that your new set point may not be the weight you want to be. To get to a lower weight you will have to work harder & then will have to continue to eat less & be more active to maintain at the lower weight. Have a chat with your dietician & medical team. And if it is a persistent stall, sometimes a small tweak is all that is need to kick start your loss again. Body dysmorphia affects all of us in some way. It can take a while to see ourselves as we are now & it can also be demoralising & disheartening. You may find it helpful to seek the support & assistance of a therapist. Many have found therapy has helped them a lot. Your surgeon &/or medical team should be able to recommend someone who can be of help. All the best.

Welcome back. Gerd can develop after sleeve surgery not bypass. Bypass is usually the solution to gerd. Dumping isn’t very common & it can be controlled by dietary choices. Avoid high sugar & high fat & you’ll be fine. I have a sleeve & have the odd case of foamies though sometimes just the first stages when I accidentally eat something too dry or coarse or eat too quickly. When I do it doesn’t last long certainly not an hour. I think it is a more common side effect of the band. It will be a no to NSAIDS with sleeve or bypass. They’re too harsh in your much smaller tummy. Post surgery you will likely be prescribed an opiate like tramadol. You may not need them or only need them for less than a week. You will need to discuss with your surgeon & other doctors alternatives to NSAIDs if you took celebrex for joint, back or other long term regular pain management. As to juice, it may be an individual thing as to whether you can tolerate the acid content of certain juices. Juices are often on the list of things to avoid because of their high calorie content. Remember a single glass of juice contains a number of serves of fruit - more than you would eat as whole fruit. Better to eat the whole fruit & get a broader range of nutrients & fewer calories than from juice alone. Plus the whole fruit is more filling. All the best.

    Trying to decide

I did take all of the advice I've gotten here into consideration, so thank you all for that. One thing I did do yesterday was to reach out to an acquaintance who had gastric sleeve three years ago in a neighboring country. Apparently, she did go through a local doctor who sent her to have surgery overseas but closer than Poland or other countries in Eastern Europe. And it was all paid by the national health insurance. This doctor is an obesity expert and runs one of the two programs in the country that's recognized as adequate preparation for weight loss surgery, if you want to try to get the national insurance to pay for your operation. It's not on an inpatient basis, which is a plus. When my acquaintance did it, the wait between the prep course and the surgery was only three months, but it may be longer now. I did email the doctor to ask for an appointment, but I have no idea if they're accepting new patients or if they have a long waiting list. If they're like other doctors, they'll be going on vacation soon and I may not get an appointment until the fall or later. And I may not qualify for surgery paid by the national health insurance, since their general rule is that they operate on people with BMI 40 or higher, and mine is 37. As I understand it, they may approve surgery for someone with a BMI under 40 if they have enough co-morbidities. I have high blood pressure and the slightly elevated blood sugar test. I don't know if that's enough, but I guess I'll find out. If I don't qualify I probably won't be able to go to the hospital in the neighboring country that my acquaintance went to, since It's not a private hospital. At least, that's what she thought.

    Concern and fear

It’s not uncommon to have heat or cold intolerances post op. Some can only tolerate ice cold things, others only warm. It’s ok to have everything warm! Warm water/tea counts as fluid intake. Can you tolerate broth? Bone broth is nutritious with a good amount of protein. Some of the unflavored protein powders will mix in to a hot beverage. Sugar free hot chocolate might be a good option for you. As long as you are staying hydrated at this point you’ll be ok. Just keep trying new things in TINY amounts, your tolerances should increase as time goes on. If day after day you can’t meet your hydration goals reach out to your team again. I went many weeks in the beginning only getting in about 300 calories/day. I’m now 3 years out, have met goal, and can tolerate most anything. It gets better!
  18. Day 10 of pre-op liquid diet. Surgery scheduled for 6/13. My dr has me on a very strict 2 week liquid only 800 cal 60 grams protein max. The nutritionist explained that it’s to shrink the liver and make more room for the surgery to work. I wish I was able to have some vegetables…. Kinda miss chewing food.
  19. So for context. I had the surgery March 8th. So after my surgery they told me to eat jello, I couldn't it hurt incredibly bad. So I just didn't eat anything. In fact I eat maybe a bite of food a day, still. I get horrible pain when I eat or drink. I've told my surgeon's office and they say "Don't worry you have tons of fat to live off of, it's not a big deal." I can't eat even week one post-op food. I can't drink water, it has to be hot tea or I am met with awful, rough pain. On top of that, everything food related smells and tastes like ROT. Straight rotten food, garbage taste and smell. No one else I know who had the surgery suffered from either one of these things. Does anyone have any advice? Pre-Op: 398lbs Post-Op: 336lbs
  20. Hey guys I’m about 8 months out and I’m in a stall. I can not get the weight to drop and I swear it is creeping up or staying the same. I also am loosing motivation and the body dismorphia is worse. I had the gastric sleeve, I’m 23 and I just want to keep going but I need help. I am about 25lbs to my goal weight. Please help I need it
  21. I didn't run a trial at the liquid, by I did start following my post-op parameters for five weeks before my pre-op diet. During that five week run, I lost 26 pounds. I started my 3 week pre-op diet last Wednesday and when I weighed in this morning, I lost another 5.4 pounds this week.

    3 rd after surgery

I colored and used my Fitbit to track my water. I mindlessly watched YouTube videos. Do whatever it takes to pass the time. It gets better each day. You’ll be so happy to sleep in your own bed (day 4 for me). Then I was so happy when I could get out of a chair easily, (day 5). I made a habit of watching sunsets and being grateful for another day done. Then the weight really starts to come off, and you’re not even hungry. Going up stairs after two weeks feels like floating. It will get better.

    3 rd after surgery

Just know that it gets better! It helped me to be really organized tracking my water and protein shake intake, and having a little project to keep my mind off things in those first few days (I had a big kind of goofy paint by numbers poster I worked on). The first three days were the worst and then each day after that I felt a little better and a little better. Hang in there, you’ll get there.

So ... 4 protein shakes a day for 14 days. First 12 days I can have half an avocado a day and unlimited non-starchy vegetables. The last 2 days, is strict shakes only. I honestly think I'm just going to do shakes only all the way through. Or at least the last week. I honestly haven't decided. I don't have to start it until the 22nd so I'm still tossing it around in the brain.
