  1. Has anyone have the 2 step revision process: 1st surgery band removed & then had to wait 6 weeks to the RNY? How fast was your recovery from having the band removed? I am in the process of trying to be approved to have my band removed and revised to RNY. I had the band placed back in 2013 & thought I was going the conservative route ... Ugh!! If I could go back in time & tell have myself not to do it, I would. I hate this damn thing ... Long story short, it has slipped and it is unfilled. I switched surgeons due to insurance purposes (and well, I didn't feel like my last surgeon listened to my concerns) ... He does a 2 step revision. He wants to remove the band, see how bad the scar tissue is & let that heal. Then go back in 6 weeks and revise.
  2. I am 1 day less than 2 weeks out of a para esophageal sliding hernia repair and Sleeve to RNY revision. My reflux, BAM is gone. I'm not vomiting or feeling like yuck. My surgeon could do a DS and has. I'm not having problems and while it doesn't mean I will or won't later, at least I'm free of the medical issues and the like I had before. I'm also down about 35 pounds in the little over 2 months since I got sick. Really happy as the medical issues were outweighing the weight, especially at the end.

Hi can you tell me what MGB means and also a revision? Thank you and well done on your weight loss [emoji3]

    Weight loss

I had band revision to RNY 14/11/2016. I've lost 55lbs to date. It's slow and every month I stall. I have the same fear every month that I'm not gonna lose anymore. Be prepared for a slow long slog to the finish line. I have another 50lbs to go [emoji37]

Congrats on your decision to get healthier! Please do some research on long term effects of the band. I am one of the failure statistics and I am in daily pain as I wait to get this thing out. If your band slips or your have to have revision surgery, the recovery really isn't that much shorter. Good luck with your decision! I have found this forum to be such a source of great information and support.

    Anemia

The infusions are even worse. I had a patient who had to have them and they took four hours and hurt. The doctor finally told her to discuss with her surgeon to have the bypass revised.

    What about the boobies!?

I had implants pre-sleeve. The nice thing is that my boobs haven't shrunk visibly at all. In fact they look bigger now in relation to the rest of my body. The bad news is, my left implant has now become malpositioned due to the loss of real breast tissue above it and I will likely want a revision. Though I'm going to wait until I'm done losing for that. It's not really that noticeable. I notice it, but even my husband didn't notice it until I pointed it out to him.
  8. I am curious if anyone had the revision from the band to sleeve and have United Healthcare. If so, what requirements did you have with them and did they cover the cost? Thanks for any input. In AZ and needing help with questions!

    Liquid diet

My lap band pre-op diet was so long ago, I don't remember how well I stuck to it. Now because of a revision to sleeve surgery, I will once again have to go through it. 2 weeks. 2 long weeks. I'm not looking forward to it. I've heard of some doctors who just say stay under 1000 cal. Others says pre-op diet for sleeve is unnecessary. I have a friend who said their doctor told her 3 weeks liquid diet. Other than Meal Replacement shakes, what else is allowed? I don't remember anymore and maybe it's different than a pre-op lapband diet. Thanks.

Trying to decide bypass vs sleeve

As a sleever (9 months out), I give the procedure my highest recommendation. I have lost 85% of what I want to lose, and I am confident the rest will come off. The sleeve is not just safer, but it does not force you to give up as many things forever. The main difference is carbs/sweets. While you will not want to have too much of these foods at any point in the future, the consequences of having some will not be as drastic. That said, an option for you would be to go have the sleeve, see what it does for you, and then if you are not satisfied with the progress after a year or two, you can go back and have a revision. It depends what your weaknesses are...mine weren't sweets, so the consensus was that sleeve would produce the same benefits as bypass. Your analysis may be very different. Congratulations on getting started!

    Oh the doubts!

Just wanted to throw out there that my starting BMI was over 49, and now look at it ! ! ! I wouldn't really be too concerned with a 10% of EWL after 5 years, think of what's going to happen in 5 years with bypass vs. VSG in ways of nutrient/vitamin deficiencies. Don't sell the sleeve or yourself short! ! ! I know that statistics are a great resource, but let's be honest, those stats are only as good as the people questioned. I would recommend checking out the revision and complication forum on obesityhelp.com so you can see for yourself the number of people that are looking at revising from RNY to either DS or ERNY because of weight gain or pouch issues. I won't try to convince you that the sleeve is your best option because you have to make the choice that is best for you, but I challenge you to really think about the fact that with RNY you get only 2 years of malabsorption of calories/fats then after that time period, the intestines adjust and start absorbing everything you eat calorie/fat/carb wise and you get a lifetime of vitamin/nutrient malabsorption. Plus a pouch can and does stretch, our stomach stretching is so minimal and we get to keep our pyloric valve which is a big plus. . . Also, no medication or food restriction for VSG. So, with VSG, you get a non-stretching stomach, no malabsorption, can take all meds, no food restrictions, and you get to keep your pyloric valve (I know I said that twice, but it's really important LOL). . . I had a pouch with my band, and it sucked. My body hated it, it wasn't natural, and nothing feels as good as being able to eat all foods without issue. I know I'm biased, but it's hard to argue that I might have made the wrong decision with VSG when I stare my size 0 Gap jeans ! ! !

    re banding after eroded

Photonut: You can only call it advertising if my goal is to get you to come to me for the revision. There are a number of LBT members who have emailed me privately and I have always tried to steer them to someone close to them. I will admit that the more bariatric surgery I do, the more I prefer gastric bypass. There, I've said it. I have an opinion. I still do Lapbands and try to help patients who've had them placed by others. That doesn't mean I think all bands should be removed... only the ones that aren't doing what they are supposed to do. Think of your operation as an investment like a stock. If you buy a stock and it goes down, you don't ride it to the bottom. You aren't married to it. You decide it isn't working for you and sell. That's all I'm trying to say here. If the tool isn't working for you, by all means do whatever you can to make it work, but if it continues to fail, you aren't married to it. Move on to something else. As far as adding a Lapband to a failed bypass is concerned, that's a completely different issue. There still isn't a whole lot of data out there on it. The rationale is to restore restriction in the face of a dilated anastomosis between the pouch and small bowel. "rebypass" isn't an option (though you can redo the procedure depending on what has gone wrong). That's a completely different issue from rebanding a previously banded patient. Rebanding is certainly an option, but so is bypass, and we know it works. Mark Pleatman MD

    your Port and the TT

My PS says he or my lapband surgeon will change the port to a smaller version a "revision" i think he called it. It will be done while he is doing the TT.

    Sleeve to DS

I was sleeved 1/17 I did great. My dr called me a “super acchiever” until my 2 year mark when I had gained 20 lbs back. After his pep talk i gained another 10. Sigh. Now I’m looking at DS and it’s appealing. Especially eliminating the hunger factor. My high weight was 283 lowest 171 current 205. My questions are is it too soon to start thinking about revising and if not would you all do it again. I love my sleeve no complications at all and an easy recovery wondering how recovery is vs the sleeve. Thanks in advance!

    Sleeve to DS

No, it is not too soon to be considering this. This is one of the considerations that I discussed with out surgeon - the prospect of doing the second half of the DS sometime in the future if needed, and his position is that it is best to do it before too much regain is experienced, as the "switch" part of the DS is more effective at helping to resist regain than it is to aid in the loss. IOW, as one informal rule of thumb that they often discussed in meetings is that the sleeve gets the weight off, while the switch keeps it off. That's not completely true - the switch does have some loss component to it, but call it 80% true. Also, most revisions aren't as effective at losing weight than a virgin procedure (you are already used to having reduced capacity, etc., and have worked around it...) so switching early plays into the strength of the DS. The down side of "catching it early" is that insurance may not cover the second half if one hasn't regained to the standard 35/40 BMI level, and also the psych aspect of actually pulling the lever to revise rather than "I know I can do it without, just one more try..." That's a tough choice, but no, it isn't too early for best results.
  17. Your plan is so much more progressive than mine. I am still on Clear liquids, right, one week. Then second week "full" liquids, so pretty much Protein shakes and broth and clear liquids. 3rd week, soft foods like thicker Soups. Oh boy! Forth week, mushier foods. C'est la Vie! My surgery however was a 'revision' but I did notice they do this for all of their WLS.Haha! We'll be hitting the soft foods at the same time I think. Here's my whole 30 days lol: ImageUploadedByBariatricPal1454875560.280951.jpgImageUploadedByBariatricPal1454875587.565974.jpg Thanks! If you like cottage cheese, the best I've ever tasted is made by "Kalona". Yes, I am fantasizing about cottage cheese right about now, lol. Lol I'll look for that brand!!
  18. Hello everyone, I posted a long thread, which I won't repeat on this thread under Band to Sleeve Revisision Thread introducing myself. I'm researching the Sleeve and trying to determine which direction I'll be heading in three weeks. I have to have my port revised, the doctor wants to remove my band and I'm leaning towards getting the Sleeve done (insurance approval pending). I've strugged the past two years with my band to the point I've regained all my weight lost post banding, plus 20 pounds. I do have a wonderful support structure at home (which I didn't have with my band) and want to make an educated choice. I know my doctor wants my band removed...so do I go bandless and stay morbidly obese or move forward with Sleeve revision. I've tried it on my own for twenty years (on and off diet rollercoasters). The band didn't work for me. Will the Sleeve? (I know it is up to me - but I have those nagging doubts). I need the help and advice of those that have been in my situation. Also those who haven't had the band and that have had the Sleeve surgery done. My ears are open :-) Anyone have any regrets? Negatives and Positives? I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you.... Leslie
  19. Thank you for the information...I've made the decision to revise to sleeve...MissDiva and i were banded about the same time so it was nice to see an old friend and familar face...im now waiting to hear from my doctors office (not so patiently might i add lol)

    Had gastric sleeve yesterday. Hey.

Hey!!! I am also a revision surgery pt! Congrats!!! Looking forward to following you!!
  21. I had the sleeve to RNY revision because after my sleeve my reflux got really bad. Having to have surgery twice was no fun. I would really consider having RNY if you already have reflux.

    Calling all August Sleevers!

I'm scheduled for surgery August 7th and I am so nervous! I'm doing a revision from failed lap-band surgery 5 yrs ago. Let's all keep each other posted on all the good and bad things associated with this journey......I'M Terrified!!! I am worried because this is a permanent change to my body and I fear recovery, I have read some horror stories about problems after surgery. But I am staying positive and prayerful that all will go well. Most of all that I am making a decision to improve my overall health with weight loss surgery. I haven't told anyone other than my husband that I am having this surgery. I feel like this is my private decision, also I am embarrassed because of failing the first surgery in 2009. Does anyone else feel like me? Keeping surgery a secret?

    RIP Lappy ;(

Oh my gosh. You and I have the exact situation. I woke up on January 4th with a sleeve revision from my slipped band and hiatal hernia repair. I had no knowledge that I was getting it. I had my band since October 2009. I had lost 70lbs and didn't regain. I had about 40lbs to go but I had issues I would ignore until those horrible symptoms started I couldn't. I have been petrified after reading all the information, especially about leaks so its nice to have someone else in my shoes. We have no choice but to go forward. My lack of knowledge did result in a trip to the ER 7 days after surgery because I just didn't understand just how important fluids and protein were. This board and meeting with a nutritionist has really helped. I just wanted to let you know I understand exact how you feel!
  24. I would like to hear from those of you who originally had Gastric Bypass surgery and then revised to the Gastric Sleeve. My bypass surgery was December 2005. I managed to lose about 80-90 lbs. (size 24/26W down to a size 10/12). Unfortunately...my success was short lived and I never reached my goal weight of 145 lbs. My recent endoscopy showed my bowels were twisted...esphogus was messed up and my pouch was made too large. Had a few issues with terminal gas..lol...acid reflux...digestion issues...etc. Was sleeved on 2/10...and so far so good. My surgeon specializes in revisions so im very confident that I will not only have better success this time...but I will also reach and/or pass my goal of 145. He went in and corrected all of the previous mistakes from my first surgery as well as ensuring my new stomach is nice and small. What has it been like for those of you who made the switch?
  25. Congratulations on your revision. From what I know, a friend told me, the gastric bypass works faster. Welcome to the group, a lot of good information here.
